Margaret Schwarz senior voice recital Montana State University Billings voice major Margaret Schwarz, soprano, will present her senior voice recital on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Cisel Recital Hall. Daughter of Dan and Marcey Schwarz, Margaret is a voice student of MSU Billings Music Department Co-Chair Douglas Nagel. Schwarz has been involved in music since prekindergarten. In September of 2017, she founded and served as the president of the all-women a cappella performance ensemble, Jackets Only, at MSU Billings. She is currently completing her junior field in choir under the guidance of Anthony Hammond at Medicine Crow Junior High School. Schwarz made her operatic debut at NOVA Center of the Performing Arts in Offenbach’s “The Lantern Marriage,” taking on the role of Fanchette. She will star as Susanna in NOVA’s production of Mozart’s “Marriage of Figaro,” and has also been a lead vocalist in The Soul Funk Collective since its’ founding in 2017. Schwarz is both a Music Performance and Music Education major at MSU Billings, and will graduate in May. The recital will include selections by Mozart, Debussy, Beethoven, Finzi, and more.

Emerald Hart to perform Nov. 19 Montana State University Billings voice major Emerald Eva Hart, soprano, will perform her Junior Voice Recital on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Cisel Recital Hall. Her recital is held in fulfillment of the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance. The daughter of Shan-Del Hart, Emerald Hart graduated from West High School in Billings, and studies voice with Professor Douglas Nagel. She has been an active participant in school choirs since she was in middle school, and has participated in numerous productions as an actress or director. Hart has performed with Billings Studio Theatre, Nova Center for Performing Arts, and West High School in “Rock of Ages”, “Bastien and Bastienne”, “Once Upon a Mattress”, as well as being a member of Venture Improv. She also teaches theatre at both Nova and the CDS Performing Arts Academy. Tim Schoessler accompanies Hart on piano, and guest artists include Grace Mock, Kieran Beebe, Margaret Schwarz, Rebecka Bolerjack, Seth Eldridge, and Jackets Only. Hart’s recital will consist of works by Beethoven, Marcello, Caldara, and Quilter.
Kieran David Beebe junior voice recital MSU BILLINGS NEWS—Montana State University Billings voice major Kieran David Beebe, baritone, will present his Junior Voice Recital on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in Cisel Recital Hall, in fulfillment of the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance. The son of Kari Beebe, Kieran homeschooled just outside of Billings, and studies voice with Professor Douglas Nagel. He has been an active participant in the MSU Billings Choruses, and has participated in numerous productions with Rimrock Opera Company and Nova Center for the Arts including “Blodwen”, “Pirates of Penzance”, “Lantern Marriage”, “The Telephone”, and “Mr. Choufleuri.” Beebe will sing “Count Almaviva” in Nova’s “Marriage of Figaro.” His recital consists of works by Handel, Mozart, Parry, Schubert, and Lloyd Webber with Tim Schoessler on the piano, and guest soprano Brooke Moncada.

Latin Jazz Concert and Dance On Friday, Nov. 8, Gabriel “Gabrielito” Gonzalez, media artist and Grammy award-winning musician, will join Montana State University Billings faculty member John Roberts y Pan Blanco in the MSU Billings Glacier room for a free Latin Jazz concert and dance open to all students and the community. Free Salsa dancing instruction from 7 to 8 p.m. will launch the event. The concert and dance begin at 8 p.m.
Gonzalez is a media artist, musician, and activist from East Los Angeles. He will be on campus Nov. 7 and 8 to share his expertise and insights with students and the local community, highlighting his career in the arts from a bilingual and bicultural perspective. His lectures and workshops are open to the public. These events are aimed to celebrate Hispanic culture and promote ways in which the arts and humanities intersect within a Latino context to inform and enrich our lives. Gonzalez will share his expertise as a guest lecturer in classes, lead a workshop, and collaborate with MSU Billings music faculty member John Roberts on a musical event during his visit to campus. On Thursday, Nov. 7, between 2 and 3:30 p.m., Gonzalez will discuss his music career and provide a song-writing workshop in Doug Nagel’s Choral Ensemble class in Cisel 128. On Friday, Nov. 8, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Gonzalez will meet with the World Music class in Library room 148. Then, from 12:50 to 1:50 p.m., he will discuss his work as a bilingual media artist in Liberal Arts building room 716. All lectures are free and open to the public. At 8 p.m. on Friday evening, Gonzalez will join John Roberts y Pan Blanco for a Latin Jazz concert and dance in the Glacier Room at MSU Billings. Salsa instructors will provide instruction between 7 and 8 p.m. to the concert. This will also be free and open to the community.
his first album. He studied under Ray de la Paz, the late Johnny Polanco, and toured with Grammy award-winning band, Quetzal, where he also received recognition for his contributions. In addition to his work in media and on stage, Gonzalez is a committed community arts organizer and instructor. He has taught music and theater to youth in East L.A. at the Plaza de la Raza and song-writing workshops to teens at the Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory. He has also worked in collaboration with programs such as Alliance for California Traditional Arts, East L.A. Community Cooperation, and Sacred Resistance to incorporate visual arts, poetry song, and movement into their community-based activist projects. He recently coordinated an event called, “Walk to the Wall” for victims of separated families. Gonzalez also regularly performs with Latin Jazz groups such as Cubanismo, Son Mayor, and Gabrielito y la Verdad. While studying in Los Angeles, MSU Billings’ music faculty member John Roberts, collaborated with Gonzalez. Thus, in seeking an expert to provide workshops related to music, media, and culture within a Latino context, the university approached Mr. Gonzalez. These events contribute to a larger effort, identified in MSU Billings’ Strategic Plan, to invigorate the campus by providing access to the arts and culture, particularity with attention to diverse populations. It is directed toward the students, faculty, and staff at the Montana State University Billings campus, but is also intended to reach out to and include participation from the local Billings community. Thus, by making the events open and available to the community, the intent is to strengthen the partnerships that MSU Billings is fostering in shaping an inclusive and vibrant campus central in our community.
Gonzalez’ successful career spans a wide range of artistic forms that include parts in films “Mi Vida Loca” and “Mojado de Nacimiento”; Tony award-winning musical “In the Heights” and “Selena: A Musical Celebration of Life”; bilingual commercials for Coke, McDonalds, Ford, and Pizza Hut; and musical concerts in various genres.
Support to carry out this project has been generously provided by Humanities Montana, MSU Billings Foundation, MSU Billings Music Department, College of Arts and Sciences, Spanish and Philosophy Programs, MSU Billings Diversity Center, Office of Student Access and Support, Student Activities Board, and the Center for Student Engagement.

New Exhibit Encourages “You be the Judge”
At the Western Heritage Center, explore art through this entertaining show made entirely of thrift-store art pieces. Come discuss, smile, and reflect on what makes a particular painting good or bad, and then name and vote for your favorites. The exhibit contains an art studio where you can express yourself. The exhibit is open to the public through December 28, 2019.

Billings Suffragist Story Told Museum Opens New Exhibit
A new Western Heritage Center exhibit, Hazel Hunkins Hallinan: Billings Suffragist, commemorates the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment.Hazel Hunkins Hallinan, a 1908 graduate of Billings High School, was a champion of women’s rights her entire life. She was a pivotal member of the National Woman’s Party (NWP) and active campaigner for woman’s suffrage in America. On the front lines of the NWP from 1916-1920, she protested alongside the prominent suffragist Alice Paul. After passage of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920, granting U.S. women the right to vote, she moved to England, married journalist Charles Hallinan, and was a leader of the Six Point Group, an important British feminist organization. In 1977, she returned to the United States and marched in support of the Equal Rights Amendment. Come learn about the local activist who passionately campaigned for women’s rights. This original Western Heritage Center traveling exhibit will be open in Billings at the Western Heritage Center through December 28, 2019. This new WHC traveling display is sponsored by First Interstate Bank, Billings Community Foundation, WMK Steel Fabrication, and Humanities Montana.

Audubon Center & Outdoor Exploration
The Montana Audubon Center, adjacent to Billings and on the Yellowstone River, is a great place for walking, trail running, nature-watching, and learning about the plants and animals of the area. The site is located on the Riverfront Park portion of the Heritage/Dutcher Trail system. Its fifty-four acres of managed habitat contain three miles of accessible trails and three ponds as well as a variety of native plants, most of which have been planted as part of its 20-year restoration process from a gravel mine. One popular feature of the site is the Shepard Nature Playspace, Billings’ first and only Nature Playground, where kids are free to balance on logs, dig in the dirt, and build forts with our supply of sticks. A series of demonstration gardens near the building, including the Helen Carlson Cummins Bird Garden, are also an opportunity for learning about native plants and birds. Because of both wildlife and year-round education programs on site, visitors are asked not to bring pets. The public is welcome from sunup to sundown every day. There’s ample parking and easy on-off access to Interstate 90. On the immediate site and adjacent Norm’s Island and Riverfront Parks, staff at the Center offer a variety of public and private programs for exploring and learning about the natural world. Our on-site Fledglings Nature Preschool and Nature Nuts programs are designed for the under-5 set. Family and adult programs are held multiple times each month are are low-cost or free for members. Montana Audubon Adventure Camps provide week-long day camp fun each summer, and we host nearly 100 classrooms each school year for field trips. We also offer Homeschool Science classes, themed birthday parties, and private events through the year.
