Chief Plenty Coups State Park Chief Plenty Coups State Park holds many attractions. Our Visitor Center hosts interactive exhibits about Crow culture and on the Chief’s life along with our book/gift shop. Chief Plenty Coups’ National Historic Landmark house and store are preserved. There is a ¾ of a mile walking trail that winds around the park going past the sacred spring, the Chief’s apple orchard, Pryor Creek, and the grave site for the chief, his wives and adopted daughter. Many people come to the sacred spring to enjoy the tranquillity. There are picnic areas with barbecues, a playground, and horseshoe pits for pleasant afternoon picnics. The creation of this State Park was part of Chief Plenty Coups’ dream to have a space where all peoples could come together to learn about each other. Chief Plenty Coups’ life encompassed a period of transition from nomadic to a sedentary way of life for the Crow Tribe. There is a rich history here, preserved and protected by the Crow Tribe and the State of Montana. The Park hosts several cultural community events throughout the year. There are programs at the Park on select day’s during the summer months, Day of Honor and Heritage Day during September. In addition to public-welcome events, Chief Plenty Coups State Park also hosts teacher trainings and school field trips with standards-based curriculum, as well as tours for groups. During the summer, the park is an excellent choice for a day trip, a stop on a further road trip to Yellowtail Dam, or a stop-over point for travellers heading into the Pryor Mountains. Birders enjoy the park in both summer and winter as the Park hosts a stunning variety in both seasons. Winter sport lovers come to the Park in the winter time to cross-country ski or snowshoe.

Billings Suffragist Reward offered in unusual number of Story Told Museum Opens New Exhibit

A new Western Heritage Center exhibit, Hazel Hunkins Hallinan: Billings Suffragist, commemorates the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment.Hazel Hunkins Hallinan, a 1908 graduate of Billings High School, was a champion of women’s rights her entire life. She was a pivotal member of the National Woman’s Party (NWP) and active campaigner for woman’s suffrage in America. On the front lines of the NWP from 1916-1920, she protested alongside the prominent suffragist Alice Paul. After passage of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920, granting U.S. women the right to vote, she moved to England, married journalist Charles Hallinan, and was a leader of the Six Point Group, an important British feminist organization. In 1977, she returned to the United States and marched in support of the Equal Rights Amendment. Come learn about the local activist who passionately campaigned for women’s rights. This original Western Heritage Center traveling exhibit will be open in Billings at the Western Heritage Center through December 28, 2019. This new WHC traveling display is sponsored by First Interstate Bank, Billings Community Foundation, WMK Steel Fabrication, and Humanities Montana.

BILLINGS – Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is offering a reward for information about an unusually high number of spotlighting cases north of Hardin. FWP game warden Jake Barzen said he has picked up as many as 15 deteriorating deer carcasses along Highway 47 and adjacent county roads between Hardin and Custer this fall. Most of them, he said, were shot by vandals from the roadway at night with aid of artificial light and all were left to waste. Only a few bucks had their heads removed. FWP’s 1-800-TIP-MONT program is offering a reward of as much as $1,000 for information leading to the conviction of the vandals responsible for the crimes. Anyone with information may call Barzen at 406-860-7796 or anonymously to 1-800-TIP-MONT (1-800-847-6668). The 1-800-TIP-MONT program is a toll-free number where people can report violations of fish, wildlife or park regulations. Callers may remain anonymous. It is similar to the well-known Crimestoppers program and offers rewards for information resulting in conviction of persons who abuse Montana's natural, historic or cultural resources.

Lake Elmo State Park

Inside the city limits of Billings is Lake Elmo State Park. A large 64-acre reservoir, Lake Elmo is the perfect place to swim, paddle, fish, picnic, bird watch or hike the 1.4-mile nature trail. The Lake, originally known as Holling Lake Reservoir, was constructed to provide water to irrigated farmland as part of the Carey Land Act of 1894. The water that fills the man made lake is diverted from the Yellowstone River near Laurel, MT and flows through 63 miles of gravity fed canals before reaching the lake. Prior to becoming a State Park in 1983, Lake Elmo was once the site of a two story restaurant and night club known for dancing, big band music, and two inch thick T-bone steaks. Nearby property owners created beaches for swimming and even cleared snow from the lake in the winter to host ice skating. At once point a thriving boat club was formed by local water skiing and motor boating enthusiasts. The Regional Office for Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks is now located in the park. The Regional Office houses an impressive collection of taxidermied birds, fish, and wildlife. You can also purchase conservation licenses and apply for permits at the office which is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

3 strategies for enjoying a safe New Year’s Eve New Year’s Eve is one of the most festive nights of the year. Counting down to a new year while simultaneously saying goodbye to the current year provides grounds for celebration for millions of people across the globe. New Year’s celebrations vary depending on where the partying is taking place, but it’s common for people to check their inhibitions at the door on December 31. That can make for a fun evening, but also puts celebrants in jeopardy of making bad decisions or confronting the consequences of others’ poor decisions. Adhering to three simple safety strategies can increase the chances that this New Year’s Eve is memorable for all the right reasons.

Most people who are out and about on New Year’s Eve are focused solely on having fun. However, some criminals see New Year’s Eve as an opportunity to prey on unsuspecting men and women who may not be as alert to danger as they are on other nights of the year. For example, a recent report from Australia’s Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research found that the number of violent offenses between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. on New Year’s Eve is nine times higher than it is on other nights of the year. By hitting the town with friends and staying with those friends throughout the night, New Year’s Eve revelers can make themselves less vulnerable to criminals.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that people who consume alcohol begin experiencing a loss of judgment when their blood alcohol concentration, or BAC, reaches .02. That means it only takes a relatively small amount of alcohol before people’s judgment begins to falter, and judgment only suffers further with each additional drink. The pressure to overindulge in alcohol on New Year’s Eve can be considerable, but revelers should avoid situations where they might be tempted to drink too much. Such overindulgence only makes people vulnerable to bad decisions and even criminals looking to prey on inebriated victims. Even people who avoid alcohol on New Year’s Eve are vulnerable to potentially unsafe highways. That’s because everyone shares the roads, and drivers never know who else will be on the road when New Year’s Eve festivities end and everyone goes home. The U.S. Department of Transportation notes that, over the last half-decade, and average of 300 people died each year in drunk driving crashes in the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. To avoid becoming such a statistic, New Year’s revelers can celebrate at home and invite others to stay overnight. New Year’s Eve is a fun but potentially dangerous night. However, a few simple safety strategies can make sure New Year’s Day conversations are all about the fun from the night before.

How to care for wild birds this winter The arrival of winter forces everyone to confront the changes synonymous with the season, and local wildlife is no exception. Low temperatures, harsh winter storms and a scarcity of food can make it challenging for wildlife, including birds, to thrive throughout the winter. Even though several species of birds are migratory and travel to warmer climates to wait out winter, many others stay put. The Audubon Society says that keeping close to home helps some species of birds maintain their territories. Some birds will puff up to retain heat; others will seek shelter in dense foliage or cavities to avoid the elements. Many birds will huddle together to share warmth. Another way of keeping warm is building up fat as an insulator and energy source. The Audubon Society says more than 10 percent of some birds’ winter body weight may be fat. That can be challenging to maintain when common sources of food, such as insects and berries, disappear as winter wears on. This is when some human intervention can prove handy, advise ornithologists. A few simple efforts may benefit birds and other wildlife that may not hibernate winter away or escape to the tropics. • Have a supply of food, bird feeders, houses, and any other bird-related gear at the ready before the storms really rev up.

• Invest in nutritious food, such as black oil sunflower seeds or blends that are high in black oil sunflower seeds. You also can make available more foods that are high in fat, such as suet, peanut butter or even whole peanuts. Mother Nature Network also suggests adding meal worms if they can be found. • Choose feeders that will keep seed dry; otherwise, it will be prone to bacterial and fungal growth.

Billings Thrift Art Exhibit New Exhibit Encourages “You be the Judge”

At the Western Heritage Center, explore art through this entertaining show made entirely of thrift-store art pieces. Come discuss, smile, and reflect on what makes a particular painting good or bad, and then name and vote for your favorites. The exhibit contains an art studio where you can express yourself. The exhibit is open to the public through December 28, 2019.

• Don’t discard fallen leaves or any downed twigs or pruned boughs from trees. This will give birds material for creating shelter or hiding away when the weather gets especially brutal. When the Christmas tree is finished for the season, place it in the yard as a windbreak for birds. • Put shallow water sources around so birds can drink. Replace them frequently if water freezes. Wild birds can benefit from some help when the temperatures start to drop in winter.

Hosted at Native American Achievement Center on Dec. 6 The Montana State University Billings Native American Achievement Center is excited to announce the 2019 Native Arts and Holiday Bazaar to be held Friday, Dec. 6 from 4 to 8 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come ring in the holidays and shop for Native arts and crafts. All festivities will take place at the Native American Achievement Center, located west of the MSU Billings campus at 2630 Normal Ave. Several Native American craft artists will be present to display their beautiful artwork for sale. Booths will display a variety of original native designs in jewelry, clothing, accessories, and more. In addition to complimentary snacks and beverages, guests are invited to sample popular Native foods throughout the event as well. The Native Holiday Craft Show is free to attend.
