Tippet Rise Art Center to present Fifth Anniversary Concert Season Seven weeks of concerts will feature the world premiere of a work for flute and electronics as well as programs by internationally celebrated musicians and outstanding emerging artists The art center, which celebrates the union of land, art, architecture, and music, will present seven weeks of concerts featuring an impressive list of artists, many of them making their debuts at Tippet Rise. Complete program details will be announced on Tuesday, February 18. Tickets will be available through a randomized drawing. The drawing will open on the Tippet Rise website also on Tuesday, February 18, at Noon Mountain Time, and run until Monday, March 9, at 5 p.m. Mountain Time.
Season Five’s Concert Season
The 2020 concert season brings together accomplished artists and up-and-coming stars performing more than four centuries of repertoire. Among the pianists making their Tippet Rise debuts will be: Russian Yulianna Avdeeva, who made her Los Angeles Philharmonic debut with Gustavo Dudamel in May 2019; Hungarian Zoltán Fejérvári, who recently won first prize at the 2019 Concours Musical International de Montréal; Moscow-born and Israeli Boris Giltburg, who can be heard
this season in recitals at Wigmore Hall in London, Bozar in Brussels, and The Concertgebouw in Amsterdam; one of today’s most revered American recitalists Richard Goode; and Canadian virtuoso Marc-André Hamelin, recipient of seven Juno Awards and 11 GRAMMY nominations; South Korean rising star Dasol Kim, who won the Jury Discretionary Award at the 2017 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition; and the extraordinary virtuoso Ukrainian-American Valentina Lisitsa. Lisitsa’s Chopin etudes were number one on Amazon’s list of classical video recordings, and became the most-viewed Chopin etudes on YouTube. Lisitsa now records for Decca. Also coming to Tippet Rise for the first time will be two young Californians: violinist Alexi Kenney, who received the 2016 Avery Fisher Career Grant, and cellist Oliver Herbert, who recently made his San Francisco Symphony and Chicago Symphony Orchestra debuts. American cellist Edward Arron and Canadian baritone Tyler Duncan, who has sung with the New York Philharmonic, will also debut at the art center this season. MacArthur Fellow Claire Chase will perform composer Bora Yoon’s new work for flute and electronics—a Tippet Rise co-commission in its world premiere. Muzijevic, who also serves as Tippet Rise’s Artistic Advisor. Concerts will take place indoors and out. Venues include the 150-seat Olivier Music Barn, inspired by the acoustically powerful concert room for which Haydn composed his chamber music repertoire, and the open-air Domo, a 98 -footlong, 16-foot-tall, acoustically rich sculptural structure designed by Ensamble Studio. Pre-concert lectures and occasional concerts will continue to take place at Tiara, a 100seat outdoor acoustic shell. Pop-up concerts will be held in the 2,100-square-foot scenic pavilion, Xylem, designed by worldrenowned architect Francis Kéré and inaugurated in July 2019.
Education and Artists in Residence at Tippet Rise Art Center
While Tippet Rise’s is closed to the public during the winter, the art center remains active with educational outreach, residencies and artist collaborations. In September 2019, six members of Ensemble Connect, a program of New York’s Carnegie Hall, the Weill Music Institute, and The Juilliard School, performed for almost 500 kindergarten to high school students from Absarokee, Fishtail, Nye and Red Lodge. Also this fall, and for the third consecutive year, students and faculty from Montana State University Honors College presented music and poetry in the Olivier Music Barn. In addition, as a part of the Art Expedition at Tippet Rise Art Center program, the Honors College sends students each summer to explore the ranch, attend concerts, and interview visiting artists.
Tippet Rise is home to state-of-the-art recording facilities and hosts several artists each year for special studio sessions. Pianist Julien Brocal recently spent time at Tippet Rise as an artist in residence and will return to record in April, 2020. This winter, pianists Michael Brown, Roman Rabinovich and Adam Golka will be at the art center, editing and mixing their albums that were recorded at Tippet Rise in January 2019. Composer John Luther Adams will be recording his Fifth String Quartet, a Tippet Rise Commission, with the JACK Quartet.
Enjoying Tippet Rise from Afar
Concert footage from several past season performances is now available online. In addition, Tippet Rise releases a new podcast episode on the first Thursday of every month, each exploring a facet, or facets, of the art center’s mission. Insights on the art center’s sculptures, artists, outreach, and influences are also available on the website. Tippet Rise was the setting of Ross Morin’s film “In a Landscape, Dreaming,” which features Pedja Muzijevic performing the work of John Cage. The film has received numerous awards, most recently Best Music Video from The Artists Forum Festival of the Moving Image: 2019.

Celtic Christmas by BSO&C
Jeremy Kittel, Billings’ favorite fiddler, violinist, and Celtic influenced composer, is bringing some friends to celebrate the Holiday season. Celebrate the Christmas season with Billings’ favorite fiddler, Jeremy Kittel & friends in Celtic Christmas Saturday, December 21 at the Lincoln Center. Show begins at 7:30 p.m., with Concert Cues, an interactive pre-show discussion, beginning at 6:45 p.m.. Tickets range from $10 to $52 depending on seat location. Jeremy Kittel An American violinist/fiddler, Jeremy Kittel just received a Grammy nomination for best arrangement/composition. He has been placed in the community alongside many prevalent composers such as Alan Silvestri and John Williams. Fluent in multiple music genres, Kittel composes original music that draws from traditional roots, jazz, Celtic, classical, electronic, and more. Kittel performs with his group, Kittel & Co., as a soloist with orchestras, and in collaborative and supporting roles with many of today’s leading artists. He has worked with Abigail Washburn and Bela Fleck, My Morning Jacket, Aoife O’Donovan, Jars of Clay, and Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble. He was also a part of the Grammy Award-winning Turtle Island Quartet for 5 years. This is Jeremy Kittel’s second appearance with the Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale, having performed in December 2015’s Celtic Christmas. Quinn Bachand Kittel & Co.’s guitarist Quinn Bachand began performing the acoustic guitar around the world at age 11. By 17 he played over a dozen different instruments, recording and producing albums with his sister Qristina. The duo quickly rose to the top of the international Celtic music world, and together they have won two Irish Music Awards: 2010 Top Traditional Group and 2011 Top Duo. With diverse musical talents and a bottomless pool of creativity, Bachand has been dubbed the “Young Lion” of the Celtic guitar (Daniel Lapp) and “Canada’s top Celtic guitarist” (Ashley MacIsaac). His contemporary edge to traditional Celtic music has sparked worldwide attention. An in-demand sideman, Bachand has toured nationally and internationally. He is also the front man of gypsy jazz band Brishen, singing and playing lead guitar, violin, and tenor banjo. Cillian Vallely Cillian Vallely is the uilleann pipes and low whistle player of the renowned Irish band Lúnasa, described as “the hottest Celtic band on the planet” (Irish Voice). In recent years, he has played and recorded with Bruce Springsteen, Natalie Merchant, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Tim O’Brien, and Riverdance, in addition to recording as a guest on over 50 albums. With Lúnasa, he has performed at the Hollywood Bowl, Glastonbury Festival, WOMADelaide, Edmonton Folk Festival, as well as multiple tours of Asia, Australia, US and Europe. “Vallely, whose family has played a seminal role in
piping and Irish music in the north of Ireland for years, shows why he is one of the most respected pipers playing today” (Irish Voice). Elizabeth (“Zee”) Ní Bhraonáin, TCRG Zee Ní Bhraonáin hails from Grand Rapids, Michigan where she owns and operates her own CLRG certified Irish dancing school Scoil Rince Ní Bhraonáin. Not only is Zee a certified TCRG, but she has taught Regional winning, National, and World qualifying dancers. When she isn’t teaching, she absolutely adores performing! Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Zee grew up performing with groups such as the Black Brothers, Culann’s Hounds, and Tempest. After moving to the mid-west, she has had many performance opportunities, including having the pleasure of dancing with the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra as well as choreographing for Cathie Ryan, formerly of Cherish the Ladies. Growing up in a household with a 9th generation Dublin-born father meant that there was no shortage of Irish music. In her 25 years of dancing, she has always carried these words in her heart, “If it weren’t for the Irish music, we wouldn’t be Irish dancing.” Erin Small Erin Small is a prominent teacher, conductor and performer within the Billings community. She is an elementary music teacher for the Billings district, and joyfully serves over 750 children per week. She is also the director of Yellowstone Valley Voices, which is an advanced choral program for young singers throughout the valley. Over the last decade, Erin has performed with various local organizations such as; Venture Theatre, Billings Studio Theatre, Rimrock Opera and the High Plains Chamber Singers. In 2016, she made her debut with the Billings Symphony performing as a guest artist for the Holiday Pops performance. She is thrilled to perform once again and considers it an honor to work with such amazing musicians.
About Jacqueline Curtis Low, ADCRG Claddagh Irish Dance Academy Dublin, Ireland native Jacqueline Curtis Low started dancing at the age of nine and immediately fell in love with it. After 25 years of teaching dance professionally in Ireland, Jacqueline and her husband relocated to Billings, where she opened the Claddagh Irish Dance Academy in 2014. of her school, Jacqueline is a member of the largest Irish dance organizations in the world—Comhdháil na Múinteoirí le Rincí Gaelacha Teoranta (Congress of Irish Dance Teachers)—and currently serves as Chairperson of the Branch of the Americas. The Claddagh Irish Dance Academy encourages and promotes the art and practice of traditional and authentic Irish Dancing. New Downtown Holiday Decorations
The Downtown Billings Alliance is looking to crowdfund new holiday decorations for the downtown area. The current Downtown Billings holiday decorations were purchased in the 1960s and are very near the end of their usable life. The Downtown Billings Alliance (DBA) is a non-profit organization that advocates for a vibrant and thriving downtown through community events, clean and safe programs, and economic development projects. The Downtown Billings Alliance is excited to plan for new LED holiday decorations, which will be more vibrant, modern, durable, and energy-efficient. The DBA hopes to purchase and install in November of 2020. However, these decorations are not cheap and the next year will be spent raising the money for this important project. Consider donating a few dollars to bring new decorations to Downtown Billings! One of the proposed snowflake decorations has been installed on N Broadway in front of Rock Creek Coffee Roasters and Jimmy Johns to display how each pole will look when complete. Each snowflake is over $600, and each stretch of lit garland is over $200. The Alliance is planning on wrapping and lighting 23 of the downtown light poles on 2nd and Broadway. Any extra funds will be used to beautify 29th St between 1st and 3rd. …Tippet Rise, from Page 3 between Billings and Bozeman and just north of Yellowstone National Park. Tippet Rise has a growing collection of large-scale sculptures and other works by some of the world’s foremost artists and architects. Artworks set within the landscape include several site-specific sculptural structures by the innovative Ensamble Studio. Tippet Rise is also home to two monumental works by the internationally renowned sculptor, Mark di Suvero; sitespecific works by Stephen Talasnik and Patrick Dougherty; and two works by Alexander Calder on loan from the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Gardens. Also, two paintings by Isabelle Johnson, an original owner of part of the land on which Tippet Rise Art Center is situated, and one of Montana’s first Modernist painters, hang in the Olivier Music Barn. The newest addition to the art center is Xylem, which is constructed of locally and sustainably sourced ponderosa and lodgepole pine and features a canopy of vertical logs that filters shafts of light onto the seating areas. Tippet Rise has received several awards, including the 2017 Leading Culture Destination Award from the UK’s LCD Magazine and travel channel; a 2018 General Design Honor Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA); one of TIME Magazine’s “World’s Greatest Places of 2018”; and the Tippet Rise Fund of the Sidney E. Frank Foundation was named “Foundation Philanthropist of the Year” by the Yellowstone Art Museum in 2019. Additionally, the Olivier Music Barn was awarded LEED® Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for its environmentally sustainable design and systems. As an institution founded to serve its neighbors in Montana as much as visiting musicians, artists, and audiences, Tippet Rise develops and supports year-round education programs in schools at the K-12 level, local colleges and universities, and other organizations. Getting to Tippet Rise Art Center Located in Stillwater County, Tippet Rise is approximately one hour southwest of Billings, two hours southeast of Bozeman, and two-and-a-half hours north of Yellowstone National Park. Access and Tickets Tippet Rise is open to visitors from late-June through mid-September on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Prior registration, or a concert ticket, is required for admission to Tippet Rise. Concerts and van tours are priced at $10; free to those 21 and under. Tickets will be available through a randomized drawing which will open on the Tippet Rise website on Tuesday, February 18th at Noon Mountain Time and run until Monday, March 9, at 5 p.m. Mountain Time. Audubon Center & Outdoor Exploration
The Montana Audubon Center, adjacent to Billings and on the Yellowstone River, is a great place for walking, trail running, nature-watching, and learning about the plants and animals of the area. The site is located on the Riverfront Park portion of the Heritage/Dutcher Trail system. Its fifty-four acres of managed habitat contain three miles of accessible trails and three ponds as well as a variety of native plants, most of which have been planted as part of its 20-year restoration process from a gravel mine. One popular feature of the site is the Shepard Nature Playspace, Billings’ first and only Nature Playground, where kids are free to balance on logs, dig in the dirt, and build forts with our supply of sticks. A series of demonstration gardens near the building, including the Helen Carlson Cummins Bird Garden, are also an opportunity for learning about native plants and birds. Because of both wildlife and year-round education programs on site, visitors are asked not to bring pets. The public is welcome from sunup to sundown every day. There’s ample parking and easy on-off access to Interstate 90. On the immediate site and adjacent Norm’s Island and Riverfront Parks, staff at the Center offer a variety of public and private programs for exploring and learning about the natural world. Our on-site Fledglings Nature Preschool and Nature Nuts programs are designed for the under-5 set. Family and adult programs are held multiple times each month are are low-cost or free for members. Montana Audubon Adventure Camps provide week-long day camp fun each summer, and we host nearly 100 classrooms each school year for field trips. We also offer Homeschool Science classes, themed birthday parties, and private events through the year.
