Tippet Rise Art Center to present Fifth Anniversary Concert Season Seven weeks of concerts will feature the world premiere of a work for flute and electronics as well as programs by internationally celebrated musicians and outstanding emerging artists The art center, which celebrates the union of land, art, architecture, and music, will present seven weeks of concerts featuring an impressive list of artists, many of them making their debuts at Tippet Rise. Complete program details will be announced on Tuesday, February 18. Tickets will be available through a randomized drawing. The drawing will open on the Tippet Rise website also on Tuesday, February 18, at Noon Mountain Time, and run until Monday, March 9, at 5 p.m. Mountain Time.
Season Five’s Concert Season
The 2020 concert season brings together accomplished artists and up-and-coming stars performing more than four centuries of repertoire. Among the pianists making their Tippet Rise debuts will be: Russian Yulianna Avdeeva, who made her Los Angeles Philharmonic debut with Gustavo Dudamel in May 2019; Hungarian Zoltán Fejérvári, who recently won first prize at the 2019 Concours Musical International de Montréal; Moscow-born and Israeli Boris Giltburg, who can be heard
this season in recitals at Wigmore Hall in London, Bozar in Brussels, and The Concertgebouw in Amsterdam; one of today’s most revered American recitalists Richard Goode; and Canadian virtuoso Marc-André Hamelin, recipient of seven Juno Awards and 11 GRAMMY nominations; South Korean rising star Dasol Kim, who won the Jury Discretionary Award at the 2017 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition; and the extraordinary virtuoso Ukrainian-American Valentina Lisitsa. Lisitsa’s Chopin etudes were number one on Amazon’s list of classical video recordings, and became the most-viewed Chopin etudes on YouTube. Lisitsa now records for Decca. Also coming to Tippet Rise for the first time will be two young Californians: violinist Alexi Kenney, who received the 2016 Avery Fisher Career Grant, and cellist Oliver Herbert, who recently made his San Francisco Symphony and Chicago Symphony Orchestra debuts. American cellist Edward Arron and Canadian baritone Tyler Duncan, who has sung with the New York Philharmonic, will also debut at the art center this season. MacArthur Fellow Claire Chase will perform composer Bora Yoon’s new work for flute and electronics—a Tippet Rise co-commission in its world premiere. Muzijevic, who also serves as Tippet Rise’s Artistic Advisor. Concerts will take place indoors and out. Venues include the 150-seat Olivier Music Barn, inspired by the acoustically powerful concert room for which Haydn composed his chamber music repertoire, and the open-air Domo, a 98 -footlong, 16-foot-tall, acoustically rich sculptural structure designed by Ensamble Studio. Pre-concert lectures and occasional concerts will continue to take place at Tiara, a 100seat outdoor acoustic shell. Pop-up concerts will be held in the 2,100-square-foot scenic pavilion, Xylem, designed by worldrenowned architect Francis Kéré and inaugurated in July 2019.
Education and Artists in Residence at Tippet Rise Art Center
While Tippet Rise’s is closed to the public during the winter, the art center remains active with educational outreach, residencies and artist collaborations. In September 2019, six members of Ensemble Connect, a program of New York’s Carnegie Hall, the Weill Music Institute, and The Juilliard School, performed for almost 500 kindergarten to high school students from Absarokee, Fishtail, Nye and Red Lodge. Also this fall, and for the third consecutive year, students and faculty from Montana State University Honors College presented music and poetry in the Olivier Music Barn. In addition, as a part of the Art Expedition at Tippet Rise Art Center program, the Honors College sends students each summer to explore the ranch, attend concerts, and interview visiting artists. Tippet Rise is home to state-of-the-art recording facilities and hosts several artists each year for special studio sessions. Pianist Julien Brocal recently spent time at Tippet Rise as an artist in residence and will return to record in April, 2020. This winter, pianists Michael Brown, Roman Rabinovich and Adam Golka will be at the art center, editing and mixing their albums that were recorded at Tippet Rise in January 2019. Composer John Luther Adams will be recording his Fifth String Quartet, a Tippet Rise Commission, with the JACK Quartet.

Concert footage from several past season performances is now available online. In addition, Tippet Rise releases a new podcast episode on the first Thursday of every month, each exploring a facet, or facets, of the art center’s mission. Insights on the art center’s sculptures, artists, outreach, and influences
are also available on the website. Tippet Rise was the setting of Ross Morin’s film “In a Landscape, Dreaming,” which features Pedja Muzijevic performing the work of John Cage. The film has received numerous awards, most recently Best Music Video from The Artists Forum Festival of the Moving Image: 2019.
About Tippet Rise Art Center
Tippet Rise Art Center is located on a 12,000 acre-working sheep and cattle ranch in Fishtail, Montana against the backdrop of the Beartooth Mountains, roughly midway between Billings and Bozeman and just north of Yellowstone National Park. Tippet Rise has a growing collection of large-scale sculptures and other works by some of the world’s foremost artists and architects. Artworks set within the landscape include several site-specific sculptural structures by the innovative Ensamble Studio. Tippet Rise is also home to two monumental works by the internationally renowned sculptor, Mark di Suvero; sitespecific works by Stephen Talasnik and Patrick Dougherty; and two works by Alexander Calder on loan from the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Gardens. Also, two paintings by Isabelle Johnson, an original owner of part of the land on which Tippet Rise Art Center is situated, and one of Montana’s first Modernist painters, hang in the Olivier Music Barn. The newest addition to the art center is Xylem, which is constructed of locally and sustainably sourced ponderosa and lodgepole pine and features a canopy of vertical logs that filters shafts of light onto the seating areas. Tippet Rise has received several awards, including the 2017 Leading Culture Destination Award from the UK’s LCD Magazine and travel channel; a 2018 General Design Honor Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA); one of TIME Magazine’s “World’s Greatest Places of 2018”; and the Tippet Rise Fund of the Sidney E. Frank Foundation was named “Foundation Philanthropist of the Year” by the Yellowstone Art Museum in 2019. Additionally, the Olivier Music Barn was awarded LEED® Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for its environmentally sustainable design and systems. As an institution founded to serve its neighbors in Montana as much as visiting musicians, artists, and audiences, Tippet Rise develops and supports year-round education programs in schools at the K-12 level, local colleges and universities, and other organizations.

FWP sets four public meetings on hunting regulations Four public meetings are scheduled in south-central Montana in January to discuss hunting regulations and seasons for the next two years. During the meetings, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks biologists will accept comments on proposed changes in the regulations for the 2020 and 2021 hunting seasons. 3 strategies for enjoying a safe New Year’s Eve New Year’s Eve is one of the most festive nights of the year. Counting down to a new year while simultaneously saying goodbye to the current year provides grounds for celebration for millions of people across the globe. New Year’s celebrations vary depending on where the partying is taking place, but it’s common for people to check their inhibitions at the door on December 31. That can make for a fun evening, but also puts celebrants in jeopardy of making bad decisions or confronting the consequences of others’ poor decisions. Adhering to three simple safety strategies can increase the chances that this New Year’s Eve is memorable for all the right reasons. 1. Travel in packs. Most people who are out and about on New Year’s Eve are focused solely on having fun. However, some criminals see New Year’s Eve as an opportunity to prey on unsuspecting men and women who may not be as alert to danger as they are on other nights of the year. For example, a recent report from Australia’s Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research found that the number of violent offenses between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. on New Year’s Eve is nine times higher than it is on other nights of the year. By hitting the town with friends and staying with those friends throughout the night, New Year’s Eve revelers can make themselves less vulnerable to criminals.
Buffalo Mirage fishing access site reopens The Buffalo Mirage fishing access site at Park City reopened to all traffic Friday after the access road and bridge were rebuilt. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks closed the 10acre property to all traffic in October for complete reconstruction of the road and bridge leading to the site on the Yellowstone River. Construction, cleanup and removal of equipment was completed this week.
2. Don’t overindulge in alcohol. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that people who consume alcohol begin experiencing a loss of judgment when their blood alcohol concentration, or BAC, reaches .02. That means it only takes a relatively small amount of alcohol before people’s judgment begins to falter, and judgment only suffers further with each additional drink. The pressure to overindulge in alcohol on New Year’s Eve can be considerable, but revelers should avoid situations where they might be tempted to drink too much. Such overindulgence only makes people vulnerable to bad decisions and even criminals looking to prey on inebriated victims. 3. Don’t get behind the wheel. Even people who avoid alcohol on New Year’s Eve are vulnerable to potentially unsafe highways. That’s because everyone shares the roads, and drivers never know who else will be on the road when New Year’s Eve festivities end and everyone goes home. The U.S. Department of Transportation notes that, over the last half-decade, and average of 300 people died each year in drunk driving crashes in the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. To avoid becoming such a statistic, New Year’s revelers can celebrate at home and invite others to stay overnight. New Year’s Eve is a fun but potentially dangerous night. However, a few simple safety strategies can make sure New Year’s Day conversations are all about the fun from the night before.

Holiday Hours at Little Rocky Mountain Regional Juried Exhibition Bighorn Battlefield Little Bighorn Battlefield will be closed Wednesday, December 25, 2019 for the Christmas Holiday. The park will also be closed on Wednesday January 1, 2020 for New Year’s Day. This allows our employees the opportunity to spend important holiday time with their families. Park staff wish everyone a great holiday season! Winter hours are still in effect. Except for these holiday closures, both the visitor center and Custer National Cemetery are open from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM daily. The 25 minute orientation film titled “Triumph and Tragedy Along the Little Bighorn” is shown in the visitor center upon request. The tour road may close temporarily when winter weather conditions prohibit safe travel, especially beyond the Calhoun Hill area. Entrance fees are: private, non-commercial vehicle $25; motorcycle $20; per person walk-in or bicycle $20. Calligraphy Workshop: Practice an old art in the New Year. Red Lodge, Montana – Artist and educator Dominique Paulus will instruct a calligraphy workshop at the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery. In six sessions, participants will learn all the tips and techniques needed to scribe a quote in the Chancery Cursive calligraphy style. The cost is $35 and includes all materials. There will be plenty of time to practice and enjoy the art of crafting letters with expert guidance from Dominique. Classes will be held Saturdays, January 4, 11, 18, 25, February 1, and 8 from 1-2:30 p.m. Students will utilize all that has been learned to produce a project as a grand finale of the course. Red Lodge, Montana – Open call for art to all artists living in Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Utah and Wyoming. The annual Rocky Mountain Regional Juried Exhibition, organized by the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery, will be on view March 5-30, 2020. The prospectus and application form are available on the Guild website, www.carboncountydepotgalley.org. Applications will be accepted until January 31, 2020. Cash awards and the People’s Choice award will be honored on March 14, 2020 during the reception. Submit your favorite piece or create a new work just for the occasion. The Guild looks forward to seeing the region’s best work represented in this exhibition. Work juried into the show will be evaluated on quality of the art, not the resume attached to the artist. This show is open to all artists. The juror for 2020 is artist Laurie Lee whose interest in art began at a very young age when her artistic mother fostered her interest into what would become Lee's passion and future career. The subject matter Lee paints usually involves western themes derived from living life out west. Laurie Lee's work has been featured in many publications including Western Horseman, Art Talk, and Art of the West. She has shown her work in national art shows including the National Watercolor Society's Art Exhibition in Los Angeles, California; C.M. Russell Museum Art Auction in Great Falls, Montana; the Western Visions Show in Jackson, Wyoming; the Cowgirl Up! Exhibition in Wickenburg, Arizona, and the Buffalo Bill Art Show in Cody, Wyoming. Lee was a Signature artist at the 2018 Art in the Beartooths annual fund-raiser for the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery. In 2019, Lee received the prestigious Peter Fillerup Award at the Buffalo Bill Art Show. The mission of the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery is to support, inspire, and encourage all artists. Audubon Center & Outdoor Exploration
The Montana Audubon Center, adjacent to Billings and on the Yellowstone River, is a great place for walking, trail running, nature-watching, and learning about the plants and animals of the area. The site is located on the Riverfront Park portion of the Heritage/Dutcher Trail system. Its fifty-four acres of managed habitat contain three miles of accessible trails and three ponds as well as a variety of native plants, most of which have been planted as part of its 20-year restoration process from a gravel mine. One popular feature of the site is the Shepard Nature Playspace, Billings’ first and only Nature Playground, where kids are free to balance on logs, dig in the dirt, and build forts with our supply of sticks. A series of demonstration gardens near the building, including the Helen Carlson Cummins Bird Garden, are also an opportunity for learning about native plants and birds. Because of both wildlife and year-round education programs on site, visitors are asked not to bring pets. The public is welcome from sunup to sundown every day. There’s ample parking and easy on-off access to Interstate 90. On the immediate site and adjacent Norm’s Island and Riverfront Parks, staff at the Center offer a variety of public and private programs for exploring and learning about the natural world. Our on-site Fledglings Nature Preschool and Nature Nuts programs are designed for the under-5 set. Family and adult programs are held multiple times each month are are low-cost or free for members. Montana Audubon Adventure Camps provide week-long day camp fun each summer, and we host nearly 100 classrooms each school year for field trips. We also offer Homeschool Science classes, themed birthday parties, and private events through the year.
