The Growling Old Men Billings favorite, The Growling Old Men return to Cisel Hall on Saturday, February 15th. Presented by the Yellowstone Bluegrass Association and Yellowstone Public Radio, MSU-B Music Department, Hansen Music and Kirk’s Violins. Doors will open at 6:30 PM, with the show beginning at 7:00 PM. Tickets are $20 and available at the door.

The Growling Old Men features John Lowell (guitar & vocals) and Ben Winship (mandolin & vocals). The two veterans of the Rocky Mountain bluegrass and Americana scene present a relaxed set of virtuosic musicianship and tight harmonies – informed equally by the music of the Appalachian hills and the western plains. In concert, the Growling Old Men are both engaging and spontaneous as they strive to blend simplicity with complexity; all with good tone and a warm sense of humor. For nearly 30 years they’ve played at festivals, concerts and workshops across the US, Canada and Europe, and have four duo recordings to their credit. Downtown St.Patrick’s Day Festivities Saturday, March 14, 2020, the Downtown Billings Alliance (DBA) and Hooligan’s Sports Bar present the 39th annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration in Downtown Billings. Events will include the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Celtic Fair, and a street party hosted by Hooligan’s Sports Bar. The parade begins at 11 a.m., accompanied by the Celtic Fair and Hooligan’s Street Party from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. 2020 brings changes to the St. Patrick’s Day festivities. Upon request of the City of Billings & Montana Department of Transportation the long used downtown parade route has been changed to ensure that North 27th Street remains open and the downtown MET transfer center is not impacted by parade staging. The parade staging area will now be located west of North 32nd Street. The parade will go East down 2nd Avenue North, turn North (left) under Skypoint, and then turn West (left) onto 3rd Avenue North where the floats will disband at Division and North 33rd Street. The new route not only relocates the float staging area but it also relocates the annual Celtic Fair portion of the day to 2nd Avenue North between Broadway and North 27th Street. The Hooligan’s Street Party remains on Broadway between 2nd Ave N. and 1st Ave N. The St.Patrick’s day parade has remained a cherished tradition in Billings for almost 40 years. The parade features upwards of 60 floats proudly constructed and decorated for the St.Patrick’s Day holiday by local businesses and nonprofit organizations. The parade will be moderated for the public’s enjoyment by local radio DJ from the Desert Mountain Broadcasting group, Willy Tyler, and Local Blogger and Montana Matters host, Dianne Parker. The moderators and parade judges will be seated on the Community Entertainment Stage located on 2nd Avenue North out front of The Babcock Theatre. To enter a float in this year’s 39th Annual St.Patrick’s Day
parade you will find the parade application and details located on downtownbillings.com. This year’s Celtic Fair includes a handful of arts & craft and mobile food vendors along with a lot of green swag. The confirmed family fun activities include balloon twisting, face painting, and photo opps. Planning is still in the works and with the help of additional sponsors, the DBA expects to be able to add even more activities to the Celtic Fair than ever before. Events Director Lindsay Richardson says: “We are thankful for our downtown allies who step forward and help sponsor events like this. Our Membership Director, Matt Headlee, is working on securing the final sponsors to allow us to add more family fun activities to this year’s festivities. Our goal really is to make sure there’s something to entice everyone to come and spend their day downtown. We are talking to Steep World about bringing their climbing wall down to the Celtic Fair and working with local bicycle groups and shops to hopefully facilitate some bicycle fun for the community’s youth. Those are just a couple of the activities we’re working on. As soon as things are confirmed we’ll shout them from the rooftops. We wouldn’t want anyone to miss out!” The day is full of live entertainment. The Celtic Fair Community Stage, located on 2nd Avenue North, West of Skypoint, in front of the Babcock Theatre includes Irish dance from the Claddagh Irish Dance Academy beginning at 12:30 p.m. Hooligan’s Sports Bar’s St.Patrick’s Day Street Party will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Broadway outside of Hooligan’s & Montana Brewing Company. This portion of the festivities will also include an outdoor stage with live music and features an outdoor Irish Beer Garden and special St. Patrick’s Day promotions and giveaways. Flat Stanley travels the globe with the orchestra! Discover the cultures of the world through musical stories, instruments, and songs, featuring music from all parts of the world! Selections include classics: Glière’s Russian Sailor’s Dance, Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 5, Offenbach’s Can-Can, and Copland’s famous “Hoe-Down” from Rodeo. First published in the 1960s, Flat Stanley is a classic, fun tale of a boy with a difference. The story is timeless and still just as relevant – with its messages of acceptance, jealousy and good versus evil – in the modern world. Tim Marrone received his training at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City and has appeared on stage throughout the Northeast, most recently in the Baltimore/Washington DC area. He has appeared as a silent comic character for the Washington National Opera, the Maryland Lyric Opera, the Summer Opera Series at Catholic University, and has toured as a clown with the George Carden Circus. ‘The War of The Worlds’ on Jan. 29 After a year long hiatus from touring, Alberta Bair Theater is proud to welcome back Montana Repertory Theatre-on January 29, 7:30 p.m., at Petro Theatre on the campus of MSU Billings-with its re-imagining of Orson Welles’ classic story The War of The Worlds, which terrified a nation when first broadcast on radio in 1938. Directed by Caitlin O’Connell under the artistic direction of Michael Legg, five actors perform 25 roles in this infamous radio play, based on the novel by H. G. Wells, which had many terrified listeners convinced that
an actual alien invasion of Earth was taking place. The War of The Worlds is sponsored locally by Cushing Terrell, ABC6/Fox4 and NewsTalk 95.5. Trivia Night
The Zonta Club of Billings is hosting its 23rd annual Trivia Night fundraiser on Saturday, February 22, 2020, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, located at 226 Wicks Lane. A social hour starts at 6:00 p.m. and Trivia starts promptly at 7:00 p.m. Zonta is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Zonta International and this year’s Trivia Night theme is: Celebrating 100! The event is open to 35 teams of eight players each. Teams answer eight rounds of challenging trivia questions, with each round based on a different topic. The top-scoring team wins a $500 cash price. Prizes are also awarded to second and thirdplace teams, and to each round’s winning team. Full dinner and concessions are available throughout the evening. Dozens of items are available to bid on at a silent auction, and a live auction for a “Staycation” in Billings–which includes dinner reservations, a night at a Billings Hotel and a movie or concert in downtown Billings—will take place during intermission. A fact or fiction round, door prizes, a 50/50 raffle, and grab bags are also part of the fun. Retired KTVQ 2 news anchor, Jay Kohn, will again be the master of ceremony. Trivia Night is Zonta Club of Billings’ biggest annual fundraiser. The organization provides service to the community through domestic violence and human trafficking awareness, grants for community agencies, scholarships, as well as volunteers for local nonprofit organizations. NOVA Fundraiser in February Valentine’s Day...a day that NOVA celebrates the "Love of the Arts" and the love for our patrons and subscribers! Join us with your friends, family, and those whom you love, while supporting the arts. NOVA Center for the Performing Arts will host our annual celebration "Love of the Arts" on Friday, February 14th at MoAv coffee 2501 Montana Avenue. The event is a fundraiser for NOVA Center for the Performing Arts. Doors open at 6:30 P.M. Guests will be treated to an evening of appetizers, desserts, delicious wines, and tasty beer--all included in the cost of admission. Ticket prices are $50 per couple and $30 for individuals. There will also be a wine raffle and silent auction. Celebrate love, celebrate the arts, celebrate with NOVA at the Love of the Arts. Audubon Center & Outdoor Exploration
The Montana Audubon Center, adjacent to Billings and on the Yellowstone River, is a great place for walking, trail running, nature-watching, and learning about the plants and animals of the area. The site is located on the Riverfront Park portion of the Heritage/Dutcher Trail system. Its fifty-four acres of managed habitat contain three miles of accessible trails and three ponds as well as a variety of native plants, most of which have been planted as part of its 20-year restoration process from a gravel mine. One popular feature of the site is the Shepard Nature Playspace, Billings’ first and only Nature Playground, where kids are free to balance on logs, dig in the dirt, and build forts with our supply of sticks. A series of demonstration gardens near the building, including the Helen Carlson Cummins Bird Garden, are also an opportunity for learning about native plants and birds. Because of both wildlife and year-round education programs on site, visitors are asked not to bring pets. The public is welcome from sunup to sundown every day. There’s ample parking and easy on-off access to Interstate 90. On the immediate site and adjacent Norm’s Island and Riverfront Parks, staff at the Center offer a variety of public and private programs for exploring and learning about the natural world. Our on-site Fledglings Nature Preschool and Nature Nuts programs are designed for the under-5 set. Family and adult programs are held multiple times each month are are low-cost or free for members. Montana Audubon Adventure Camps provide week-long day camp fun each summer, and we host nearly 100 classrooms each school year for field trips. We also offer Homeschool Science classes, themed birthday parties, and private events through the year.
