A Message from the CEO I recently received an email from a Weld Australia member bemoaning the quality of welders in Australia and the loss of the status of licensed welder. The member wanted to know what Weld Australia is doing to rectify the situation. Whilst I have received politer emails, I could not argue with any of the sentiment expressed by the member. Coincidentally, in a recent meeting I had with Senator the Hon Doug Cameron, Shadow Minister for Skills, TAFE and Apprenticeships, we discussed the very same issue. Senator Cameron expressed his regret at the disappearance of the status of licensed welder. Similarly, members of our Power Generation Industry Group recently expressed their concerns over this same issue. Many of these members are finding the shortage of skilled pressure vessel welders a major issue during plant shut downs. There is no question that the lack of a mandated licensing or certification system for welding in Australia is a major threat to public safety. In Europe and North America, it is compulsory that all welding is carried out by a qualified and certified welder. This is obviously not the case here in Australia. In responding to the member’s email, I pointed out that the purpose of the Australian Welder Certification Register (AWCR) is to act as a de-facto licensing system in the absence of Government support. The aim of Weld Australia is to have the AWCR process brought into legislation so that it becomes compulsory for all welders in Australia to be certified to welding

procedures under AS/NZS ISO 9606. Until recently, I believed this to be more of a vision (or flight of fancy), rather than a potential reality. However, the success of our Advanced Welder Training Centres (AWTCs)—and the support we have received from both State and Federal Governments for the AWTCs—is encouraging me to believe that the various levels of government are becoming more aware of the importance of welding certification and qualification, and the potential risk to public safety that exists without them. Recent feedback I’ve had from various members of the Federal Shadow Cabinet has also been extremely positive. We are further encouraged by the success that the RMS specification has had. This specification mandates AS/NZS ISO 3834 certification for all pre-qualified fabricators and AS/NZS ISO 9606 certification for all welders employed on structural steelwork (such as that in bridges) for New South Wales Government projects. In 2019, it will be our intention—and one of our primary objectives—to have welding qualifications and certifications formally recognised in legislation. We believe that this can be achieved through relatively minor changes in procurement and WorkSafe legislation. To achieve this, we must all support the AWCR. I implore all Weld Australia members to get behind this important initiative. Register on the AWCR. Ensure your employees and subcontractors are registered and certified via the AWCR. Weld Australia needs your support to ensure the status of licensed welder is reintroduced to Australia.

The 2nd Women in Manufacturing Leadership Summit Make no mistake: Australia’s workforce is changing at an alarming pace. Within the next two decades, robotics and automation will transform Australia’s job sector. Increasingly sophisticated technologies lie at the core of this change, causing an increase in the requisite skills and knowledge demanded of workers. While this change is disruptive in nature and poses unique challenges, technological advancement is simultaneously creating lucrative career opportunities. What remains to be seen, however, is a higher percentage of women seizing the opportunities of the digital age. The perception and reality of traditionally maledominant work environments for women are unchanged by the rapid pace at which technological advancement is creating opportunities. In terms of perception, women face several

barriers that prevent them from entering the industry, despite technological change making their inherent capabilities more competitive. The reality is that the benefits of a diverse and inclusive manufacturing workforce are multitiered; individuals, organisations and the societal level reap the rewards concurrently. Women

often perceive ‘traditional trades’ as unwilling to change. This perception can prove discouraging, especially for those interesting in undertaking studies in the vital STEM subjects, underpinning many of the manufacturing qualifications. Those who do brace maledominated industries often find their perceptions affirmed - worksites are not inclusive and do not have the infrastructure to support women. Despite these seemingly stubborn barriers, women (and more broadly, a diverse workforce) offer important economic and managerial benefits. Considerable strides have been made in recent years to recognise the contribution of women to the bottom-line of organisations and the economic benefit to the nation. Research demonstrates how increasing female workforce participation by around 6% would increase the size of the Australian economy by about $25 billion per year.

The 2nd Women in Manufacturing Leadership Summit underrepresented and their value isn’t being acknowledged by techheavy, male-dominant industries such as manufacturing. In light of this evidence, more women should be encouraged to embrace the challenges of the Australian workforce and yield the rewards of technological advancement. To tackle these challenges, women must expand their influence, refine strategic communication skills, and effectively navigate unconscious bias. In doing so, women will be able to reshape the perceptions of other women towards the manufacturing industry and raise their own profile for career advancement. New South Wales Division News End of Year Event The New South Wales Division End of Year Event was held at the Ambassdor Restaurant at TAFE NSW Ryde at the end of November. During the evening, members were treated to a presentation by Geoff Crittenden (CEO, Weld Australia. Geoff provided an overview of the highly successful range of projects delivered by Weld Australia in 2018. Just some of these projects include the establishment of five Advanced Welder Training Centres (AWTCs) across the nation, the launch of the first Defence Welding Hub, and growing certification to AS/NZS ISO

showcase at LaserBond’s facilities in Smeaton Grange. LaserBond is a specialist surface engineering company founded in 1992 that focuses on the development and application of materials, technologies and methodologies to increase operating performance and wear life of capital-intensive machinery components.

3834. Geoff then gave members an overview of the types of activities that will be undertaken by Weld Australia next year. A number of awards and certificates were presented on the night. Sasanka Sinha (Technology Manager, Weld Australia) was awarded a Weld Australia Honorary Fellowship. Kirk Foy (Team Leader Workshop Quality, Thales Australia), Arya Sharifian, (Qualification and Certification Technical Coordinator, Weld Australia) and Guy Berendsen (Engineering Manager, Liquip International) were all awarded IIW International Welding Engineer (IWE) certification. Weld Australia would like to congratulate all recipients for their achievements.

Within these industries, the wear of components can have a profound effect on the productivity and total cost of ownership of their capital equipment. As almost all components fail at the surface, due to material removal through abrasion, erosion, corrosion, cavitation, heat and impact, and any combinations of these wear mechnisms, a tailored surface metallurgy will extend its life and enhance its performance.LaserBond’s technology has applications across many industries as more sectors accept that surface engineering technologies can deliver significant cost effective imrpovements in productivity and cost.

Victoria Division News Together, Weld Australia and the Box Hill Institute recently opened an Advanced Welder Training Centre (AWTC), the first TAFE in Australia to achieve this. To celebrate the opening of the AWTC, a free industry breakfast was held in late November. The AWTC is a purpose-fit facility featuring the latest welding equipment, integrating augmented and virtual reality technology to upskill existing technicians and train future welding professionals in Australia and internationally.

“I would love to see young students from Years Seven and Eight have the opportunity to try their hand at these machines. It could open young eyes to a career choice they would never have otherwise consider.”

The newly refurbished centre features an advanced augmented reality lab that is equipped with ten Soldamatic welding simulators and five Lincoln Electric REALWELD® Trainers.

“There was also some good discussion during the breakfast about how this process is likely to improve welder qualification and allowing employers the opportunity to accurately assess employee skill levels,” said Temple.

The AWTC will deliver newly developed courses to meet the current and future challenges facing the welding industry. Customised welding short courses will be available for those new to welding and to meet specific industry requirements.

The AWTC at Box Hill Institute received $1 million worth of funding from the Victorian Minister for Training and Skills the Hon

Gayle Tierney MP in August 2018. According to Tierney, “This project ensures we have enough highly skilled welders for our state’s defence and advanced manufacturing industries, as well as major rail and infrastructure projects. We want to make sure TAFEs are supported to deliver the skills industry needs and give all Victorians the training they need to get a job,” said Tierney. Weld Australia will work in close collaboration with Box Hill TAFE to ensure the success of the project. The project is essential to support the $630 million worth of defence industry work awarded to Victoria.

Rob Wiseman (Victorian Division Committee Member) and Kim Temple (QA Manager, SP McLean Engineering) attended the Industry breakfast at the Box Hill Institute. According to Temple, “The morning was well run and very informative. We were also able to have a crack at using the virtual welders and I was very surprised at the quality of the process. I think there is no doubt that with the help of this technology the future of welder training is very bright.”

Northern Territory Division News This month, the Northern Territory Division brings you news about some exciting developments across the state. With the State Government launching an Innovation Strategy, and major mining project developments, it is a busy time in the Territory. Northern Territory Launch Sites One Step Closer to Reality Equatorial Launch Australia (ELA) has announced that it is on track to establishing a launch site in East Arnhem Land, with approval for the project granted by the traditional owners and the Northern Land Council. ELA has been granted a 40 year sub-lease from Gumatj for a 60 hectare parcel of Gumatj’s larger lease area adjacent to the Garma site and Gulkula mine near Nhulunbuy. Approval from traditional owners, the Northern Land Council and the Commonwealth government for the head lease to Gumatj, which enables the sub-lease to ELA, is the first step towards launches commencing, which is expected in late 2018. ELA chief executive Scott Wallis said the Canberra-based company plans to use proven launch vehicle technologies to provide access to space for commercial, research and government organisations. “This project will provide a competitive alternative to large launch complexes, both in terms of infrastructure and associated launch costs. It could also support and complement recent Australian space developments and ventures in small satellite manufacturing and space environmental testing, and support increased access to the space environment and the benefits it provides to the Australian economy,” Wallis said.

Evolving Technology in Defence Practical-minded Hew McDonald has invented something that could make life easier for mechanics around the world. His customised, hydraulically-driven elevating work platforms are being used for a myriad of operations, including pastoral, mining, local government, transport and remote work camps. The Australian Defence Force is even looking at using the new relocatable facility on overseas deployments. The platforms can be fitted to old or new work pits - or customers can buy or lease a whole package as a re-deployable workshop facility. Not bad for something invented in a small workshop in Howard Springs on the outskirts of Darwin. Hew’s micro company, Evolving Workshop Technologies, won the inaugural Innovation Award at the Australian Industry Defence Network NT (AIDN-NT) awards, which were held as part of the Northern Australia Defence Summit in Darwin earlier this month. “I’ve patented my inventions but I’m still a very small company,” says

Hew, who has lived in the Territory for 25 years. “I sub-contract the specialist engineering work rather than have my own staff.” “It was an honour to win the innovation award.” The Chief Minister’s Excellence Award went to NT Port and Marine, which operates Port Melville, including the fuel depot and wharf, and the East Arm supply base. The company is playing a key role in economic development on the Tiwi Islands. The AIDN-NT Young Achiever Award went to Ms Sophee Clark, who works at Norship Marine. She will compete in the national final in Canberra in February. AIDN-NT chief executive Kerryn Smith says the finalists were ‘outstanding’. The AIDN-NT awards are part of the drive to develop northern Australia by increasing economic growth, including Territory companies winning more defence contracts.

This generally requires approximately two to three business days. You will receive an email to confirm your enrollment and the next steps of your training.

If Weld Australia cancels a course (in which you are enrolled and have paid for) due to a lack of participants, you will receive a full refund. You can also opt to defer to the next scheduled course.

Weld Q Weld Australia courses that have examinations for certification and qualification require students to register an account in our WeldQ system. When you register for a course that requires examinations, you will receive instructions on how to create your WeldQ profile and how to apply for the relevant examinations. If you have any questions about your WeldQ application, please contact qnc@weldaustralia.com.au.

On receipt of this notification, if a course is cancelled by a participant within: • 10 working days of the agreed course starting date, the fees will be charged at 100% • Within 11 to 20 working days it will be 50% • Greater than 21 working days it will be 0% There may be occasions when

course dates change. In this instance, if you are enrolled in the course, you will receive an email advising you of the date change. This email will also ask if you wish to continue with the course.
