WTIA CEO UPDATE I would like to thank all those members who have contributed so much to the WTIA this year. There has been a noticeable improvement in the number of technical visits and events held by our state divisions. My particular thanks goes to the hard working members of all our local committees who are the unsung heroes of the institute. Over the last month, I’ve had the opportunity to meet with many of our local committees and members at the division end of year events, which were held in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. All these events were very well-attended and a pleasure to be a part of. I would also like to thank your Councillors who commit a significant proportion of their free time to council matters. I thank them for their advice, commitment and practical help in rejuvenating the WTIA. And finally, I would like to thank all our staff and support team for their hard work, enthusiasm and dedicated support throughout what has been an extraordinarily successful year. Next year, we have an exciting range of initiatives on the horizon, which will positively impact the welding community in Australia and allow us to
strengthen and grow our industry. I am looking forward to 2018, and am confident that it will be a highly successful year for both the WTIA and its members.
2017, returning on Monday 8 January 2018. On behalf of the WTIA, I extend our warmest wishes for the holiday season, and wish everyone a safe and prosperous new year.
I’d like to remind our members and clients that the WTIA office will be closed over Christmas and the New Year, from Thursday 21 December

VICTORIA DIVISION NEWS VICTORIA DIVISION END OF YEAR EVENT The Victoria Division recently held its end of year function at the iconic Melbourne Bowls Club in Windsor.
Victorian Skills Commissioner. This steering committee has been charged with developing the curriculum that will be taught at the Advanced Welder Training Centres.
Geoff Crittenden (WTIA CEO) spoke about the positive meetings he has had recently with the Victorian State Government. As a result of these meetings, Geoff has secured the support of the State Government for the development of Advanced Welder Training Centres.
Following Geoff’s address, a welding trivia activity was conducted. Members answered a range of questions from seven different categories. The categories were: • The History of the WTIA • Welding Processes • Consumables • Australian Standards • Metallurgy • Non-Destructive Testing • General Knowledge
The Centres will deliver high quality welding training programs, with welders trained and qualified to ISO 9606 in preparation for upcoming defence industry contracts. The Centres will utilise the latest welder training technology from Europe and the United States, including Seabery’s Soldamatic augmented reality simulators supplied by BOC. Not only do these simulators provide efficient, cost effective training for trade qualified welders, they also have the potential to quickly upskill nontrade transitional workers.
The members of the winning team included Andrew
Barnes, Bruce Ham and Louis Victor Blain. The Victoria Division would like to thank Supagas and Robot Technologies-Systems Australia for sponsoring the event.

NSW DIVISION NEWS NEW SOUTH WALES END OF YEAR EVENT The New South Wales Division recently held its end of year event at the Carnarvon Golf Club in Lidcombe. Overlooking the fairways WTIA CEO, Geoff Crittenden, began by acknowledging and thanking our sponsors for the evening. Both BOC and Bisalloy Steels kindly sponsored the event. Geoff presented a certificate of appreciation to Stuart McIntyre from Bisalloy Steels.
rather than replace—quality management systems such as ISO 9001. As a factory production control system, certification to AS/NZS ISO 3834 helps businesses operate more efficiently, thereby improving client satisfaction. AS/NZS ISO 3834 certification increases the likelihood of global supply chain opportunities and repeat business, bolstering profitability.
Certification helps Australian businesses demonstrate their ability to deliver a compliant, quality fusion welded product on time and to budget. AS/NZS ISO 3834 is the minimum benchmark for welding quality globally. As more companies become certified to the standard, those without it will find it harder to win work from local and international suppliers alike.
Geoff then outlined exciting plans for Advanced Welder Training Centres across the country in an effort to boost welding skills and secure high level jobs for welders in a time of manufacturing growth in Australia, particularly in the defence sector. Geoff also acknowledged the attendance of Jason Elias of Precision Metal Group and their recent attainment of AS/NZS ISO 3834 Certification. Geoff noted how important this certification will be to businesses looking to secure local and international projects in the coming years.

SA DIVISION NEWS SOUTH AUSTRALIA END OF YEAR EVENT The South Australia Division recently held its End of Year Event. Geoff Crittenden (WTIA CEO) gave an overview of the direction the WTIA is taking regarding South Australia, as well as the national welding industry. Geoff also discussed the billions of dollars worth of welding work on the horizon for South Australia, particularly in light of the upcoming defence projects such as the Future Frigate program and the Future Submarines program. Two sponsorship awards were presented on the night: to WIA (accepted by Fuhai Lui) and Bisalloy Steels (accepted by Justin Suwart). Both Fuhai and Justin spoke about the positive future of the industry, particularly with the once-in-alifetime opportunities offered by the defence projects. Paul Bettison (Industry Liaison and Lecturer for Mining, Engineering and Transport, TAFE SA) was presented with an Honorary Fellowship. With extensive industry experience in organisations such as T. O’Conner and Sons and Perry Engineering with roles including First Class Welder, Welding Leading Hand and Quality Control Supervisor, Paul has worked at TAFE SA for the past

WA DIVISION NEWS OFFSHORE PATROL VESSEL CONTRACT AWARDED The Federal Government recently announced that Lürssen, a leading German shipbuilder, will be awarded the prime contract to deliver the Royal Australian Navy’s SEA 1180 Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs). Austal, Civmec and ASC will all play a part in building the 80m vessels. ASC is set to build the first two vessels in Adelaide from next year, while Austal and Civmec will produce the 10 remaining ships in Henderson, Western Australia from 2020 once the Future Frigate program commences in Adelaide. Austal CEO, David Singleton, said that the OPV program would be a further and important addition to the $2.5 billion of work Austal has won in the past 18 months, including an unprecedented run of orders for its commercial high-speed ferry business. “The Australian Government has made a commitment to a continuous naval shipbuilding industry and Austal looks forward to playing a role in making this happen. We thank the Australian Government for this endorsement of our

shipbuilding capability, which will ensure Austal’s ongoing naval shipbuilding presence for the next decade and beyond,” he said. ASC Chair, Bruce Carter, said the OPV win was historic as it was the company’s second shipbuilding project, following on from their involvement in the Air Warfare Destroyer program. “[The] decision is recognition of the high performance of ASC Shipbuilding and the strong turnaround in its performance on the Air Warfare Destroyer program since 2014,” said Carter. “[The] announcement marks a new era for the company as it moves forward to its second major warship construction project and a sustainable future.” Civmec Chairman, James Fitzgerald said, “I congratulate Lürssen on being the chosen designer and prime contractor for the project. We look forward to continuing our working
relationship with them over the coming months to offer the Commonwealth a solution that maximises the efficiencies of Civmec’s proven expertise in manufacturing integrated complex steel structures.” The Australian OPVs will be a variant of Lürssen’s standard PV80 design. They will be 80m in length, with a displacement of 1,700 tonnes and a draught of 4m.The vessels will be fitted with a 40mm gun for self-protection, three 8.4m sea boats, state of the art sensors as well as command and communication systems. This will allow the OPVs to operate alongside Australian Border Force vessels, other Australian Defence Force units and our regional partners. The OPVs will accommodate up to 60 personnel, including a crew of around 40 Navy personnel and have the ability to accept modular mission packs such as unmanned aerial systems.

TRAINING & CERTIFICATION Holiday Season Safety Message By Paul James, WTIA Training Manager The Christmas holidays are just around the corner. So we thought it a perfect time to remind members about health and safety over the holiday period. Here are my tips for a safe, happy festive season.
2. FATIGUE IS YOUR ENEMY Many of us embark on road trips over the festive season for a well-earned break or to catch up with family and friends.
When I was young and single, 1. PPE IS JUST AS EFFECTIVE I used to drive every Christmas from the South Coast of NSW AT HOME AS IT IS AT WORK to the Eyre Peninsula in South My own attitude to using PPE Australia. This trip was over at home had waned a little over 2,000km and required 23 the years until I discovered that hours of driving, which I usually thongs do not protect your feet completed in just two days. from flying mower blades and your eyes really do hurt when More than a couple of times you splash methylated spirits along the Hay Plains, I saw in them. unusual animals on the side of the road like water buffaloes Most of us know that carrying and rhinos. This was my only out odd jobs around the home clue that fatigue was upon or undertaking activities like me—I needed to have a break. camping are more prone to causing injuries than our dayIt is estimated that 20% to to-day routine. Most of these 30% of all fatal crashes on injuries can be prevented if Australian roads are due to basic PPE is used. fatigue. The Transport Accident Commission of Victoria After all, the risks associated has compared impairment with using a grinder or welder at associated with driving while home are no less than at work, tired to driving while drunk. so why are you not using PPE? A driver who has been awake for 17 hours has the ability similar to a driver with blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.05. For someone who’s been awake for 24 hours, it is akin to having a BAC of 0.1. Always remember: Stop. Revive. Survive.
3. THE SUN IS HOT It’s the beginning of summer and it’s time to soak up some rays. Unfortunately for some people, this means absorbing more sun in a couple of weeks than they have in the previous year. Approximately two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70, with more than 750,000 people treated for one or more non-melanoma skin cancers in Australia each year. Non-melanoma skin cancer is more common in men, with almost double the incidence compared to women. In 2014, 2,067 people died from skin cancer in Australia, 1,467 from melanoma and 600 from non-melanoma skin cancers. Sunburn causes 95% of melanomas, the most deadly form of skin cancer. Excluding non-melanoma skin cancer, melanoma is the third most common cancer in Australians. In 2013, 12,744 Australians

were diagnosed with melanoma. So, make sure you take the necessary precautions when it comes to being sun smart, particularly when caring for young children. Teach your children to: • Slip: on a shirt • Slop: on some sunscreen • Slap: on a hat • Seek: some shade • Slide: on some sunglasses 4. STAY CALM Why is there always a hurry to get somewhere in a car when you are on holidays? It’s not just on the highways and the country roads, but in shopping centre carparks and local streets in your neighbourhoods. I live in a beachside town that nearly doubles in population over the holidays, so I see a lot of bad mannered drivers. Road rage is on the increase and more cars on the road over holidays adds fuel to the fire.
In the US: • 66% of traffic fatalities are caused by aggressive driving. • 37% of aggressive driving incidents involve a firearm. • Over a seven year period, 218 murders and 12,610 injuries were attributed to road rage. • One scary statistic worth noting is: 2% of drivers admit to trying to run an aggressor off the road! To put these figures into perspective, there are 218 million licenced drivers and
If you find that you have agitated another driver, whether the fault is yours or not, do not react or retaliate to the other driver on the road. This will only cause the situation to escalate. All you can do is be a considerate and aware driver that follows the rules of the road. While it may be difficult in the heat of the moment, do not give in to feelings of anger or rage on the road. For those not taking holidays, I suggest you visit the WorkCover Queensland website and review their advice on Keeping Your Workers Safe During the Holiday Season. Please take it easy over the holiday period if you are taking a break, and look after each other if you are still working.
