A visual diary of the Poor People’s Campaign

n February 20th, 69 year-old activist and veteran Albert Strickland and 19-year old activist Eli Shadley left Savannah, GA to walk the distance to Selma, Alabama for a 2016 revival of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Poor People’s Campaign. The journey took 28 days to walk the 381.8 miles. This is their story. The Poor People’s Campaign was an effort rolled out in 1968 as a means to gain economic justice for poor people in the United States and specifically, in the Southeast. Originally organized by Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the Poor People’s Campaign was born out of the need of King and the SCLC to shift their focus after the gains made in the Civil Rights movement had not improved the conditions of life for many African Americans. The effort was eventually led by Ralph Abernathy in the wake of King’s assassination that same year. Ultimately, the Poor People’s Campaign demanded both economic and human rights for poor Americans of all backgrounds, presenting itself as a multiracial effort motivated by the need for economic justice and that people should have what they need to live. It would be simple to say Strickland and Shadley’s journey started with a movie--but that’s the truth. Strickland’s friend, Laurel Fish, had been bugging him to watch Ava DuVernay’s Selma, the account of the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights 10 | W EL L F E D S AVAN N AH .CO M

marches led by James Bevel, Hosea Williams, Martin Luther King, Jr. and John Lewis. As they watched it in their home known affectionately as the Savannah Tribe House, a communal living space located on 37th Street, Strickland said over and over to Fish, “I can do this.” “The idea was to connect people to King’s message, the heart of it,” says Strickland. Dr. King believed that all three evils—poverty, racism and militarism—were the root at the ills of society. As a Veteran for Peace, that message is not only personal for Strickland, it is political. Strickland walked the Poor People’s Campaign with the Veterans For Peace Flag, connecting the Poor People’s Campaign and the need to end racism and militarism. “We have a problem with supporting veterans,” he says. “Problems with the VA, with getting veterans basic needs. So many veterans are in poverty. They are not getting proper medical treatment, no proper housing, no job opportunities after they return. Husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, children—they all come back with extreme PTSD and there is nowhere to turn.”

At one point, Strickland ended up at a veterans center on the outskirts of Montgomery, AL. The center houses about 28 people outside the VA. Talking with the owner, he found out that plenty of organizations send people to the center, but they do not support it financially or with their time. “To help them get back on their feet means they need a lot of help.”

His father had a very successful barber shop, and Jimmy brings in a lot of youth, mentors them, gives them jobs and opportunities, especially for kids coming right out of prison…” “He supported us,” Strickland continues. “People have so much more in common then they realize, and that’s for the good and the bad. When I got to Lumpkin, GA, you see the big courthouse and the old stores that were once there are now boarded up and falling down. There used to be hundreds of small farms—now the only things are huge agribusiness. “

“There is a lot of poverty where there are these small towns and unless it is a tourist attraction with a bit of corporate money, there is a death happening. But even then, people help. A woman came out of the house and offered me water, offered me a place to stay. Even when I went inside, I saw her husband sorting through a pile of bills that he could pay and couldn’t pay.”

“Ultimately it was about people wanting to be a part of something. The journey itself from the very first step to the end, all the way through, it was almost magical. It was a very spiritual experience, walking, almost out of water and someone stops to ask if I need some. I never asked anyone for anything. One thing after another, people offered help. Where there was a need it was just there.”

“I believe in humanity and in freedom. That is why I did this walk. There was not one negative aspect—people just seemed to open up and respond. That is in us—and I saw it. Not to just see it once or twice, but along the whole 400 something odd miles. The one thing I did not expect is when I gave everyone the flyer and told them about the campaign, people responded.”

“I think the most interesting thing was walking through south Georgia, which is Trump country. You have people that feel betrayed by everything—by the promise of livelihood, by the promise of a good life---and while I do not agree with Trump’s message, I understand why people gravitate towards it in this moment, much like people have gravitated towards other messages in times of distress—Hitler, Mussolini, all times of distress and the need for blame. When you have your life taken away—this is what you do.”

“It was coup de foudre...” Non, you have not fallen through a secret tear in the space-time continuum to a magical arrondissement. But the Frenchness you’re experiencing is completely real. Angela Yeo and her husband, Alexandre Darbousset, opened Le Café Gourmet last month to bring the tastes of their native France to the American South. She is from the culinary capital of Paris; he hails from the artsy southern village of Uzes. Their focus is on flaky baked goods and satisfying snacks like crèpes and quiches, served take-out style in a relaxed environment. A few sunny tables dot the room, with more the come outside for optimal people-watching. “We wanted to have small place in the city center, to reproduce what we eat in France,” says Angela, chatting with customers as she spoons batter onto the crèpe machine, recommending Nutella ($5) or marmalade ($4) filling to someone seeking a sweet snack. Open from 8am to 5pm, the café draws a steady stream of tourists attracted by the wonderful smells and locals looking for an affordable lunch. The offerings change daily and are posted on the Le Café Gourmet Facebook page, though you can expect fresh herbs and veggies to be

employed in offerings like chorizo tartines, zucchini and pepper baby quiches and the calzone-like fougasse, stuffed with mozzarella, tomato, garlic and basil (all $5). The $7.50 express menu includes a Parisian sandwich or savory tuna or ham crèpe plus a drink, though many customers leave with a brown bag full of extra goodies for later. WELLF EDSAVA NNA H. And let’s not forget the most important French essential: Coffee. Le Café Gourmet serves the full array of espresso drinks to go with the sweet apple rolls and pain au chocolat. Angela proposes the chocolat viennois, an espresso-charged sipping chocolate topped with whipped cream that pairs very well with a croissant. Though uprooting themselves from their land of origin for unknown territory has been a monumental endeavor, the couple keeps it simple. Alexandre rises in the middle of the night to bake the day’s offerings, letting the dough rise as the first rays of sun touch the cobblestones. Angela manages the front of the house and cares for their 2 year-old, who was a major part of their decision to move to Savannah to open their bakery. “We looked at Charleston, we looked at Jacksonville, but this city, it just seemed like a good place to raise a family,” says Angela. “And then we saw the downtown, and we felt at home.” “It was coup de foudre,” agrees Alexandre, employing the famous French phrase for “love at first sight.”

So perhaps it’s not so far-fetched after all to feel the echoes of a Parisian neighborhood in Savannah’s cloistered streets and architectural majesty. There are other similarities as well, in the attention paid to a love of cooking and scratch-made dishes. “What is this, ‘scratch made’?” asks Angela with a characteristic thoughtful French frown. Someone explains it’s how Southerners describe how they do what they do, using fresh ingredients and time-honored techniques to create delicious, simple food that keeps people coming back for more. “But this is how we do it in France, also!” she exclaims. She repeats it as she arranges the bread basket, trying out the phrase in her accented English. “’Scratch-made.’ I love this word. I will add it to the menu!”

On any given day one can drive past the busy corner of Victory Drive and Bull Street at around 5pmish and catch a glimpse of 520 Wing’s crowded parking lot. I had often wondered what made this Savannah wing haunt such an alluring place. It was just another “wing spot” in my eyes. What new and interesting flavor could possibly be left for another chicken wing joint to serve? I was not a believer until I took my first bite of the Crab Fries. Yes. Crab fries. I dropped by early on a Monday morning to catch up with 520s owner Gary Gordon, in effort to find out what addictive agents they were putting in their wings. Inside there is a modest, clean dining area and the most cutting-edge HD menu I have seen to-date. Modern art from a local painter dresses the walls while two large pitchers of 520s signature juice and fresh brewed sweet tea sit atop their counter to greet thirsty customers coming through the door. A young strapping, culinary innovator, Gordon lamented that his original vision for the restaurant was a full sit-down sports bars. Named for his birthday which is May 20th, Gordon created every signature wing flavor (except two) on the menu. A level culinary effort beyond your average wing joint. WELLF EDSAVA NNA H. C OM | 25

Gordon took a special trip to New Orleans to taste an authentic Po’Boy before he created a full offering of Po’ boy’s for his menu. Crispy fried shrimp, lettuce, tomato and a secret Cajun sauce drizzled on top to give it that extra savory edge that makes a Po’ Boy so satisfying. The Cajun sauce is made from scratch and the hoagie rolls are baked and delivered daily. In addition to the shrimp po’ boy there’s a Philly Cheesesteak Po’ Boy and a whole array of fettucine pasta dishes and homemade sauces to choose from. The Crab Fries came out next and the aroma of blue crab meat was intoxicating. These fries are great the next day, but epic if you eat them while they’re hot. Topped with crab meat, cheese, Cajun spices and another decadent signature sauce, the Crab Fries are a proverbial comfort food dish. I hadn’t tried a single chicken wing when I realized that this place was far more than wings. My final confirmation that 520 was something special came when Gordon introduced me to their modern take on a classic dessert found mostly at amusement parks: Funnel Cake Fries. It was 0–2, wings versus fries at this point. A light dusting of powdered sugar kept me licking my fingers after each one. It was a practical way to eat a funnel cake; that was almost ingenious. In fact, the entire menu was innovative and ingenious. 26 | W EL L F E D S AVAN N AH .CO M

And last, but never least is 520’s dessert menu which pushes all the culinary limits with its’ deep-fried Oreo cookies. I can feel the calories now and they sure taste good. I never actually got around to trying any wings– though I eventually did and they too are epic– that day because there were so many other extraordinary dishes on the menu. Though one thing is for sure and it’s that Crab Fries are proof that God loves me. 520 Wings is located at2705 Bull St., the corner of Bull and Victor y. Ele and Sean Teran of the restaurant group Ele and the Chef (Flying Monk Noodle Bar, Chive, Ele, Fire) offer up a bank-themed menu of Asian-inspired entrées and sushi rolls, plus appetizers meal-sized salads and terrific tacos (we loved the Deposit Box Duck!) Even if you’re just up for a craft cocktail or three (though too many Bonnie & Clydes might be dangerous), the high-rolling interior is worth the trip: Old safety deposit boxes have been repurposed as part of the bar, the drive-thru area now serves as a patio and if you’ve got a large party, you can sit in the money room—the steel-doored vault itself.

BRING IT ON: HUSK IN ON THE WAY Last month Charleston restauranteur and James Beard Award-winning chef Sean Brock announced he would be opening a Savannah outpost of his famous Husk. Championing traditional Southern cuisine from local sources, Brock is also renowned for reviving long-lost strains of heirloom seeds. Husk Savannah could be open as early as 2017. The reported location is 12 W. Oglethorpe—the long-vacant brick mansion that some tour guides tout as Savannah’s most haunted house.
