Think about it for a minute – if we want better access to fresh food, more information about chemically altered foods, insurance paying for counseling, daily recess and physical education in schools, more playgrounds and bike friendly streets; where do we turn? To our policy makers, that’s where. So that is what COPE has done. COPE for Change is a nonprofit organization committed to Childhood Obesity Prevention and Education. Two years ago COPE began drafting proposals for what they know will make a difference in this epidemic based on their after school program. Then they began meeting with some awesome congressional and senate staffers in Washington and held briefings to educate anyone interested in why the childhood obesity epidemic is more than poor nutrition and lack of fitness. COPE’s inclusion of therapeutic and behavioral health is a game changer. They know that. Now they are making sure that Washington knows it. Congresswoman Robin Kelly, Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Braintrust liked what she heard about COPE and invited Sandy Baker, founding director of COPE to address Childhood Obesity and their award winning after school program in the 2015 Kelly Report on Health Disparities. What an honor!

Nearly 1 7% of children and adolescents aged 2-17 are affected by childhood obesity and face many challenges including: • Missing school 20% more on average than children of a healthy weight. • 5 times more likely to report low quality of life. • Exhibiting low self-esteem and more likely to engage in suicidal thoughts and behaviors. • Having an increased risk of Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure, metabolic disorder, sleep apnea, and orthopedic issues.

COPE offers family-based, after-school programs that target three major areas to reduce and prevent childhood obesity. These are: nutrition education, physical fitness, and a therapeutic/behavioral component. It is our belief that family involvement and holistic programming are imperative for long-term change. We are proud to provide services free of charge to Savannah families.

The Kelly Report brings together Members of Congress, medical professionals and public health thought leaders to examine the root causes and impact of health disparities in America and provide a comprehensive set of legislative and policy recommendations to address them. Compiled by CBC Health Braintrust Chair Dr. Robin Kelly, the report is a call-to-action for Congress to make improving health outcomes in diverse communities a top priority. Sandy was invited to speak at the CBC Legislative Conference where the report was being released. Congresswoman Kelly had this to say: “I thank Sandy Baker and COPE for their contribution to the 2015 Kelly Report. Now is the time to address the issue of obesity in America, particularly in children.” As the Kelly Report mentions, children with obesity are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia, insulin resistance, diabetes, sleep apnea, asthma, discrimination, and self-esteem issues. As we continue the conversation about reducing health disparities and achieving health equity in a generation, we must put childhood obesity at the forefront in the discussion.” Behavioral and therapeutic health is the game changer that COPE offers in obesity education and prevention. To further that goal in the near future and keep COPE programming in the schools free of charge, funding is needed. Each 36 session after school workshop for 15 families costs $23,000.

COPE needs local businesses and individuals who believe in their work to connect with them and to help them help Savannah families. COPE uses professional counselors, fitness professionals, and nutritionists to teach our youth. What they can provide for less than $1,000 per person, a family would pay more than $6,000 for comparable services. Here’s a fun fact: As I’m writing this article,

it has been zero days since the last shooting in Savannah. This is a fact not uncommon, but when this issue comes out or even when you just so happen to read it, I’m not altogether convinced that it may not be the same. It’s a normality of life here in Savannah, one that we as citizens have seemingly accepted with some sort of Stockholm syndrome like quality that commonly generates one of the following responses: “Lord help us. Just another day in Savannah. Something generally racially insensitive. You should’ve seen it when the Jivens gang was here.” Crime. The topic has not only been the hot button issue during this past election season, but really, has been the hot button topic for those running for office for the past thirty years. Crime is the red thread that links us all together, whether we feel it’s direct impact in our neighborhoods and in our children, or whether we feel it as a far away, only to be feared abstraction, a topic of fervent warning, discussion and Facebook banter...and seemingly just that. Savannah, long crowned as the jewel Hostess City, has always tried to brush away the dirtier reality of a city where 26-28% of it’s citizens exist in poverty, often directly overlapping with those affected by violent crime. Thus far in 2015, we have had the shooting death of Savannah State student Christopher Starks, sixteen year old Anthony Crawford shot and killed at Fred 14 | W EL L F E D S AVAN N AH .CO M

Wessels, a triple shooting of three young men in Cuyler-Brownsville, a two-year old grazed by a stray bullet, a shooting in Ellis Square, a drive-by shooting mid-day in what seemed like “untouchable territory” across from tourist laden Bull and Oglethorpe--the list can and does--go on, frankly probably more than my word count allows. Depending on who you are, you may feel that this is an issue that needs to be solved from the top downand that’s not a terribly unreasonable thing to expect. But while you wait for that to happen, what about supporting efforts from the ground up?

Proactively connect tools and resources with Savannah’s high crime communities to aid with sustainable self-sufficiency.

“We are about getting everyone on the same page—it’s not a territory issueit’s not a ‘my issue’” says Ylana Abbott, the thirty year old founder and lead organizer of newly formed Solidarity in Savannah. “Everyone has a role here. We meet someone at their level.” From the mouth of babes comes the truth (and yes, as a fellow thirty year old, I will be referring to us as babes.) Abbott is quiet, unassuming and directly focused with a razor sharp precision on treating crime, specifically violent shooting related crimes, as a disease. I’d further argue, a disease that Savannah has long been overdue for inoculation. Unlike Savannah-Metropolitan Police Department outreach or even recently implemented Project Ceasefire, Solidarity in Savannah is a citizen-based operation that works with street outreach teams who have lived the life, as well as engaged citizens who are affected by the life and focuses on treating shootings, specifically those of the retaliation kind, as a disease, using the Cure Violence Health model. The Cure Violence model, which was originally developed in the Southside of Chicago to “interrupt” violence, offers a three step intervention that looks less to authority figures to solve what feels “unfixable” and instead treats violence as a disease. 1. Interrupt Transmission: To keep a disease from propagating, you have to cut it off. This means preventing retaliation crimes and mediating ongoing conflicts that have the potential to turn violent. 2. Identify and Treat Highest Risk: Street team organizers and members work with those most likely to commit or be affected by violence by meeting them where they are at--not where we want them or expect them to be, but where they are at. This means talking to them about the costs of violence, as well as the options of a life outside of violence and how to realistically obtain those options.

3. Change Community Norms: Here’s what disease and violence have in common-once it becomes an epidemic, it becomes “normal.” Once it becomes normal, it becomes acceptable. By changing community norms, you reverse the normal, the acceptable. You demand that the dialogue not just be “Another day in Savannah.” The model explains the pop-up groups of people you may see while on your way home from work or headed off somewhere. After each incident, Solidarity in Savannah follows up with a community response held 24 hours after the initial shooting, often at the direct location of the incident. While Solidarity in Savannah is not the only organization you’ll see at a community response (Don’t forget the good folks of The Bullhorn Crew, Youth City, Savannah Lives Matter and Loop It Up Savannah), Solidarity has acted as a web to bring many of these groups together, creating a full fledged response team where all hold a stake in the effect of ongoing violence. Everyone has a role; whether that’s holding up a sign to passerbys, to the less recognized members of the outreach team trying to get a temperature check of possible retaliation violence, to the activities provided to kids so that a safe environment is present amiss all the chaos. -Continued on Next Page

Each response has proved hands down that there has been a culture shift from citizens looking to those in higher positions to solve the problem, to citizens now taking the onus upon themselves to help solve the problem. When I ask about how the larger Savannah community has responded to the efforts, Abbott is both positive, yet realistic to changing a conditioned response we’ve built up over the years. “There are often two different misconceptions” she says “ They see it as send them to jail—and we are about finding the root cause. It’s hard to convince people whose houses and cars have been broken into. But there is a way to fix this and to keep humanity. I do push this a lot of times— don’t make it us versus them.” And the other? “We are realistic. We aren’t just saying stop the violence, kumbaya and end it there. No matter what, our focus is on safety and to continue on with our plan.” The Us versus Them has long played into the story Savannah has told itself, one that seemingly keeps many fearful, but also, easily distracts from the fact that this type of violence is everyone’s problem. Not the just ever blamed Westside Savannah. Not just a certain demographic. Not just a certain social code. This, dear readers, is on everyone’s front lawn--and if we keep reiterating the us and them story, we are just as guilty in keeping the problem going. “We are very careful about the story” Abbott continues. “Another thing to point out is, these kids are doing these things out of fear—a lot of older people are pushing them into a life that they have normalized. I get that psyche. We always ask ‘Who are you, why are you here, where were you before?’ We try and educate, we try and say yes-but what about this option? Our street team is vital—there are certain areas that we are not welcome. We don’t have community responses, so the street team goes in and responds. They try and 16 | W EL L F E D S AVAN N AH .CO M

talk with them to say, “ We are not here to dismantle gangs or drugs’—not that we condone that, but we rather say, “Here is information on how to get out.’” Who are you, why are you here, where were you before? These are all questions we can stand to ask ourselves and one another. It is all too often we are interested in sticking by our own narratives, assigning roles to “the other” that might feel real, but aren’t necessarily true. “ We aren’t trying to take over” Abbott emphasizes. “ But what we do is to show them something different.” I specifically don’t ask what “them” she is referring to-my thought is that she is referring to all of us, whether it’s the us that assume that the street is the only life or the us that assume that we are powerless to do anything. Them, us--hell, at the end of the day, “us” are all in the same boat, even if we are leading vastly different lives, with vastly different options. That is the nature of the place we live in at this very moment. But it doesn’t have to be. Maybe it just means we need to start recognizing that we are indeed, all in the same boat and the only way out of here is if we all paddle together.

A Lowcountry Rum Renaissance Written by Nichelle Stephens

Twenty years ago, everyone was drinking beer and wine. Ten years ago, the cocktail and speakeasy culture reemerged in New York City and spread like wildfire all over the United States. The term mixologist became a thing and every bartender started wearing vests and bow ties like it was the roaring 20s all over again. The craft cocktail movement ginned up interested in spirits but it was mostly focused on gin, vodka and whiskey. Now, rum has curried favor. Rum is notoriously known as a vacation spirit. Mainly because rum is typically made in tropical locales like Jamaica and Cuba.

Well, who would have guessed that a tiny island near Savannah would be home to a premium rum distillery. Daufuskie is a sea island that is between Savannah and Hilton Head. You can only get to Daufuskie by ferry, so you have to have sea legs if you plan to go there for a visit. I asked Tony Chase, the master distiller at Daufuskie Island Rum, a few questions and he was generous with his answers.

Is Rum having a Renaissance? I do believe rum is coming into its own. It is my belief actually that all premium categories are experiencing significant growth. Rum has historically not been considered a premium category, but more and more people are interested in it as their drink of choice. The low priced rums are seeing a decline in sales, while hand crafted and premium brands are showing increases. -Continued on Next Page

What do people say about the Daufuskie rum in comparison to other rum brands? Of the three rums, what’s the best seller? To our surprise, the Gold Rum has been our best seller. We had anticipated that the Gold would represent about 12 to 15% of our sales, yet it has been close to 50% of sales since its release on July 4, 2015. We attribute that to the growth in Premium brands in general. It is also an unusual product in that it introduces Rum to a traditional Bourbon fan, due to being aged in Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Bourbon barrels. How many people have come out

It is a naturally flavored rum, in that we made a “vanilla extract” using Maui vanilla beans and our white rum, so that we are flavoring the rum with a version of “itself” which natural vanilla. Our bartender, Josh Loper, helped us to create two fun drinks with Daufuskie Island Rum. The idea was to create His and Her drinks for a couple’s night out. First we tasted the Spiced Rum straight in a highball glass. It was strong, but smooth. The bartender suggested created a drink with Amaretto, and the end result was more modern take on the Amaretto Sour. It’s one part Daufuskie Spiced Rum, one part Amaretto, a splash of soda and an orange slice. We decided to call the “Daufuskie His”. Next, our intrepid bartender Josh suggested making a chocolate mint martini using Daufuskie Silver Edition (white) rum. The recipe called for one part Silver Edition rum, one part Creme De Menthe, one part Godiva Chocolate liqueur and chocolate syrup to line the martini glass.The drink was deliciously dangerous. That’s the “Daufuskie Hers”. Whenever your hosting a holiday party or going out for a drink, you may want to consider trying Daufuskie Island Rum. classroom celebrations

xcitement is in the air. Winter break is coming and the students are ready to celebrate. As the long awaited winter holiday break approaches, parents, students and teachers are gearing up to celebrate the holidays with fun activities, gift giving, and lots of food. Menu planning for classroom holiday celebrations is made easy when the focus of the celebrations is more on having fun because really, the students are just ready to let loose and have fun with each other. A good time to plan out the menu for classroom celebrations is after the main aspects of the party like the theme, activities, and decorations have been decided. The words “healthy” and “tasty” can describe the party food served at classroom celebrations. Party foods that taste good and provide nutrients to support the student’s growing mind and body can be quick and easy. Some healthful party snacks include chips and salsa, pretzels, yogurt parfait cups, fruit cups, vegetable sticks and dip, and popcorn. If your child’s school has a school garden, using the fruits and vegetables harvested from the garden on the party menu and/or as decoration will enrich the celebration.

The harvested carrots can be used along with dip or to make a carrot cake. The sweet potatoes can be used to make sweet potato oven fries or a sweet potato pie. Students will most likely enjoy the party food better and have more fun if they are involved with preparing their own refreshments and serving it in creative ways. Non-food celebration ideas that encourage students to give-back to their community are always a winner and include having students make holiday cards for the local children’s home or nursing home, or students caroling around the school or a senior center, or they can collect personal care items to take to the local shelter. When parents want to contribute to the party’s menu, encourage them to bring foods/beverages that are naturally red and green to school celebrations. These would include strawberry and red/greed grape kabobs, sugar glazed cranberries, red/greed apple parfaits, and hollowed sweet red peppers filled with guacamole. Providing students healthy food choices in the school food environment will encourage them continue to make healthy food choices not only throughout the holiday season but throughout the rest of the year and their lives.
