We are rocking this city all month, which is why March is the one of the most popular times to get out and enjoy Savannah! The azaleas are blooming, the weather is beautiful and the weekends are hopping. So get out your bikes, your walking shoes and your flasks so you can explore and enjoy some great events. The Stopover Music Festival taking over downtown music venues will host 100 bands over 3 days from March 10 - 12. Their ticket office is at 110 W. Broughton Street. Swing by and check out the schedule and pick up your festival tickets. There is also a St. Practice Day Bar Crawl and the 2nd Saturday Art Walk on the 2nd Saturday of March. Yes, this is a good weekend to use Uber to go downtown. Third week in March brings us St Patrick’s Day! All I want to say about this is have fun, drink responsibly and use Uber! The last Saturday brings us the Spring Carnival Bazaar! This monthly event is kicking it up a notch! The oldest and newest district that’s defining Savannah Story by Coco Papy Photos by Elizabeth Rhaney The Starland District is not easily defined. Artists studios share space with churches, new businesses share with spaces that have long been there. New construction begins in a renovated bank building, a soon to be specialized grocery store, yet it is buildings like Sey Hey with it’s old school font and handpainted signage (a historic and culturally significant detail in many businesses in the area). Different generations, cultures and values all bump up against one another, not always perfectly in harmony, but nonetheless, in a way that is specifically Savannah.

Looking at it all, one thing is for certain: Starland is alive. Named for and grounded by the lovingly dilapidated Starland Dairy that serves as both a relic to the once booming business of milk, it now echos the creatives of years past, holds steady as an impromptu art and music space and serves as a focal point of what Starland is: a flurry of the old, the new, the decaying and the revitalized. There’s no other place that’s better to get lost in for a few hours, taking joy in all the tiny details that make this place quixotically complete and worth taking time for. -Continued on Next Page

Come one, come all! Step right up and get a tasty glimpse into the taverns, pubs, and bistros that Savannah natives love to haunt. These places are hardly a secret to the locals, but they may be off the beaten path for some. So whether you’re just visiting, a recent arrival, or just plain don’t get out enough, this guide is for you. Each stop on the tour is casual-friendly and you’ll be welcome in your tee shirts and flip flops (because this is Slowvannah, after all).

1. The Original 318 DR AY TON STREET

Your Grandfather’s Favorite Dive

Where is It? Located in the former site of legendary Savannah dive bar Pinkie Master’s, the Original puts a fresh face on the tried and true formula. Not much has changed other than a light aesthetic makeover. Look for the iconic Pabst Blue Ribbon sign still hanging proudly out front, where it’s been beckoning bargoers since before many of us were born.

When we go... Pinkie’s was established as a neighborhood institution for decades, serving everyone from grooms getting the jitters out before getting married at the nearby Cathedral, to regular Joe’s coming in after work

(or even before, depending on the shift). The Original does an excellent job of channeling PM’s “everybody’s welcome” attitude, and it’s still a great place to shoot the breeze with a wide assortment of Coastal Empire wildlife.

The Original

What We Eat... The Original doesn’t serve food, but occasionally someone will bring in pizza or other bar snacks. Well FED didn’t find any of Pinkie’s famous Criscocooked popcorn, but that doesn’t mean it won’t show up. For the nearly-starved, both the Public Kitchen and Bar and Mellow Mushroom StoneBaked Pizzas are nearby.

What We Drink... As the sign indicates, a cheap PBR may be the go-to beverage here, but they’ve got everything from draft beers, to wine and liquor. And of course, $1 happy hour specials makes everyone happy.

2. Abe's on Lincoln 17 LINCOLN L ANE

Low- Frills, High- Fun College Party Cabin

Where is It? Tucked away on the ground floor of a historic and possibly haunted property that was once Savannah’s original liquor store, according to legend, Abe’s is just south of Bay Street and around the corner from popular destinations like Leopold’s Ice Cream parlor and the Trustees Theater.

When we go... Make your Mark! Add your own illustrated interpretation of one of Abe Lincoln to the funky napkin gallery.

Abe’s is very much a late night scene, so come early to avoid the crowd, or show up after dinner to mingle, the choice is yours. Just be sure to add your own napkin-drawing of Old Abe to the low-hanging rafters when you visit. The Jinx

What We Eat... Abe’s is a bar in the old fashioned sense, and they don’t serve anything more filling than a slice of lime to adorn your cocktail. There are plenty of great spots to eat nearby though, including B. Matthews American Bistro a block up and over at Habersham and Bay.

What We Drink... There’s plenty to choose from, but you can’t go wrong with a delicious Lagunitas IPA for just a fiver.

3. The Jinx

127 WEST CONGRESS STREET The Rocker’s Paradise

Where is It? Right in the heart of the historic district, the Jinx Music Cavern and Boozery sits on the edge of Ellis Square, just around the corner from the uber-touristy City Market. Look for the uniquely country-metal decor, the always interesting window display, or the scores of tattooed, longhaired, leather-clad patrons stubbing out smokes outside on Congress Street.

When we go... We love the Jinx for the live music. Channel your inner-redneck during happy hour on Saturdays with in-house outlaw-country outfit, Damon and the Sh*tkickers playing all the twangy hits from 18 | W EL L F E D S AVAN N AH .CO M

Johnny, Merle, Willie, Waylon, and Hank Jr. There’s usually a great show or two to catch throughout the week and weekend as well, running the gamut from twangy Americana and bluegrass to thrashing punk rock and heavy metal.

What We Eat... Again, no food here. Memories of the once-famed spicy pepper popcorn machine have all but faded. Well FED recommends you grab a slice from Vinnie Van GoGo’s pizzeria in City Market, or give one of the city’s most excellent sandwiches a try, the creamy Shrimp Roll from Sorry Charlie’s right across the street from the Jinx.

4. Treylor Park 115 EAST BAY STREET

Fresh Takes on Kiss-Yo- Cousin Cuisine & Cocktails

Where is It? This relatively new addition to the Savannah scene can be difficult to stumble upon, blending into the other buildings on Bay Street between Abercorn and Drayton. Look for the placard with the stylized teardrop Airstream trailer.

When we go... Treylor Park is great for lunch or dinner, but you can also kill some time anytime the sun is shining on the back patio beer garden. It tends to get crowded around peak dinner times on the weekends, so plan accordingly.

What We Eat... Treylor Park made friends fast with their fun, creative twists on standard southern fare. Think fancy versions of hillbilly food. We love the PB&J chicken wings (we SWEAR they’re much better than they sound) and the “nachos grande”: a towering pile of waffle-cut fries, fried chicken, cheddar, bacon, pickles, and sauces that are as delectable as they are innovative.

What We Drink... PBR and a shot of Wild Turkey are the drink of choice at the Jinx, but they have a surprisingly wide variety of craft beer and specialty cocktails. Tony, Gill, and Scotty may look intimidating behind the bar, but they’ll be happy to whip you up whatever your little heart desires.

17 Hundred 90

Plenty of options here, with a robust beer and wine list, but we recommend the craft cocktails. The mixologists at Treylor Park are always hard at work, whipping up inspired new creations based on seasonal flavors. Right now we love the Peach Pit and Georgia Mule.

5. 17 Hundred 90

307 EAST PRESIDENT STREET Where Everybody Knows Your Name, Just Not Yet

Where is It? Just south of Broughton on Lincoln Street, this storied eatery shares its name and building with a gorgeous historic inn. While the dining room is magical and the service is terrific, we recommend hitting up the bar in the back for a more casual and local experience. The contrast of the friendly, laid-back crowd and the elegant oil paintings of tall-masted ships is a beautiful thing to behold. -Continued on Next Page

When we go... Pop in around happy hour to make the most of this friendly neighborhood bar. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more chatty bunch than the after-work crowd at 17 Hundred 90’s bare-brick lined bar. It’s our favorite place to hear a story that will make you feel like one of the regulars.

What We Eat... The bar menu is full of lowcountry favorites like Miss Annette’s Crab Stew, but we also enjoy the fresh salads and sandwiches.

What We Drink... Beer, wine, and liquor are all plentiful here, including a nice selection of bourbons, but we like to ask our neighbor what they’re having, then order one of the same at 17 Hundred 90.

Located between Broughton and Congress on Whitaker Street, Circa 1875 serves as a sort of French Embassy with its next-door neighbor, shopping destination the Paris Market. We recommend the pub portion of the restaurant, for a less formal (but still delicious) alternative to the dining room next door. The menu is the same in both areas.

When we go... There’s hardly a bad time to experience the european charm and old world sophistication of Circa 1875, but we recommend you come hungry! The french cuisine here is too good to pass up. It’s a great place to catch up with old friends and share a drink or two.

What We Eat... The real question is what not to eat. French staples like onion soup, coq-au-vin, and cassoulet are all authentic and amazing here. DO NOT MISS the beef tartare if it is available as a special, and the flashgrilled frisee salad or steamed mussels (prepared with just a hint of fennel) are great choices as well. For those looking to spend a little less, the burger is terrific too. Don’t forget the truffle fries!

What We Drink... While there is a full bar here, we can’t get enough of the extensive wine list. When in France, right?

Cha Bella

102 EAST BROAD STREET Taking Farm-to-Table to the Next Level

Where is It? Just around the corner from the east end of Broughton Street, Cha Bella is a bit off the beaten path but well worth the trek.

When we go... The dinner menu is fantastic and fresh at this “Earth-to-table dining experience”, but what we love most about Cha Bella is relaxing on the beautiful patio garden with a group of friends for brunch.

What We Eat... Cha Bella is known for their close relationship with local farmers, and their rapidly-rotating menu focusing on the freshest of the fresh ingredients, prepared with flare. During brunch, the omelet and seafood and grits bar tends to steal the show, with unlimited trips to handcraft your meal with local and organic proteins, veggies, and cheeses, all made to order for one unbelievable price.

What We Drink... A full bar awaits you here (just remember there’s no alcohol on Sundays until 12:30), but we usually spring for the bottomless mimosas our housemade sangria. -Continued on Next Page

8. McDonough’s

Restaurant & Lounge 21 EAST MCDONOUGH STREET Be Irish All Month Long & Catch a Game

Where is It? Just around the bend from Chippewa Square (of Forrest Gump-fame) and the Savannah Theater, McDonough’s is easy to find on the corner of yep, McDonough and Drayton Streets. The green awning and steady stream of sports-attired party people are a dead giveaway.

When we go... McDonough’s is THE place for locals to watch a game downtown. Whether it’s football season or March Madness, McDonough’s has plenty of TVs to keep rabid fans of every team happy. They also have a wonderful weeknight karaoke, and great bloody marys for the hair-of-the-dog crowd.

9. Planter's Tavern 23 ABERCORN STREET

For Lovers (and History Buf fs too)

Where is It? What We Eat... There’s tons of bar-food favorites here, but McDonough’s has some of the best wings in town. There are a plethora of tasty flavors, but time and time again we come back to the Hot Yaki sauce. Somehow they taste even better if you can catch them during one of the many half-off wing specials!

One of Savannah’s more hidden gems, Planters Tavern is buried below its more famous sister restaurant, The Olde Pink House. This basement pub is absolutely overflowing with candlelit atmosphere and history, including secret meetings of American patriots during the revolution.

When we go... What We Drink... Besides the aforementioned bloodys, we tend to go for a bucket of ice cold domestic beer to wash down our wings and celebrate our favorite team’s victories.

Planter's Inn

There’s no better place for a romantic drink or dinner date. Just be sure to slip in early or late, and leave the group behind; this place gets packed quickly around peak dinner hours. Try to secure a seat at the secluded wine-cellar vault table, which harkens to the buildings stint as the first bank in the state of Georgia.

What We Eat... The full Pink House menu is available down here, and you would be hard-pressed to find more skillfully crafted renditions of traditional southern dishes. Our favorites include the shrimp and grits or other fresh seafood dishes, but it’s hard to go wrong with a menu this good.

What We Drink... The beer and wine list are both excellent and extensive, but the real treasure here is the curated cocktail list, with fun libations like “Planter’s Punch”, a sweet and spicy Jalapeno Margarita with homemade pepper syrup, or the refreshing “Seersucker” sweet-tea vodka and lemonade mashup.

t some point or another, most little kids dream of growing up and running away with the circus. Chris Abolio kind of did, and she’s still running – constantly moving from street to square to park to plaza, and bringing an array of characters with her. Every morning when she wakes, Abolio becomes an extension of herself – an exaggeration. Today it’s “Poppet,” a mime who moves with fluidity and ease. Poppet is colorful, despite being dressed in black and white. Abolio says it’s her everyday attire; black and white striped pants with matching overcoat, accented with a black ruffled cowl. Her face is painted white, which contrasts perfectly with her dark hair, slicked back in a style that would make Elvis proud. We met at Forsyth Park for an interview and photo shoot. As I’m clicked away, folks walked up and Abolio goes method, circling around them, using hand gestures to communicate. The smiles were infectious. I could tell it was hard for her to break character to talk to me, but we need to finish the interview. “When you’re creating that illusion, it’s all in the details,” she said. “The character is part of the show, and you want it to be real in a sense.” Abolio is the founder of The Crowd Hecklers, a small and up-and-coming circus troupe of talent taking over the streets of Savannah. She busks three to four days a week, hamming as a clown, hip-hop dancer, tumbler or a living statue she calls “Madam.” But Poppet seems to be her favorite. It’s a family tradition after all.

“My dad was a mime and he was always so extravagant,” said Abolio. “I grew up with that wonderment and pride. He made people smile and laugh and I wanted to do the same.” And she does, spending most of her time on River Street, creating connections with an ever-changing stream of tourists and locals. Abolio is continuously experimenting with content, honing her own skills and teaming up with other performers to extend her vision. “I want to teleport people from their normal dayto-day into this magical, creative, bazaar place. From one reality to another.” That’s what street performance is – a change in reality. It takes guts. There’s an inherent dichotomy between artistic representation and audience perception. Take Alex Kogut, for example. He often sits in Reynolds Square playing his accordion; a small bucket rests below casually calling for spare change. To the many that rush by, he’s a street musician, but for the Pedicab drivers that constantly circle the square and the employees at the Olde Pink House across the street, he’s a staple of Savannah. “It’s an altruistic expression,” said Kogut.“They know me, I know them.Together, we create an atmosphere.” Kogut’s not necessarily playing for the cash (although that always helps), rather, he plays for anyone who cares to listen. “Street performing helps keep things humble in a city,” he said. “There is nothing corporate about it. Behind the tourism there is still soul to be found.”

And that soul is palpable. Savannah has raw talent, and those who work as street performers, work hard to hone their craft. Abolio is self-taught, recently training herself to juggle and taking yoga classes to up her acrobatic game. Local belly dancer and fire-eater Nicole Edge practiced for eight years before stepping in front of an audience. Now, her performances run the gamut from burlesque troupes and birthday parties to upscale museum gigs and private events. All three performers are transplants, but Edge believes they are a representation of what Savannah is. “It’s unique in that way,” she said. “There is an amazing amount of talent for such a small town.You have so many people from all over the U.S., all over the world, that come here and blend those talents.” Luckily, the city embraces creative entrepreneurship. It’s somewhat easy to obtain a busking permit, just few forms, a few rules to follow, and a few trips to the Citizen Office. Artists, crafters and street performers then have unlimited access to specific zones within the city, including Rousakis Plaza, the Southside of Forsyth Park, and Johnson, Wright, Chippewa and Reynolds squares. SUPERFOODS ON BROUGHTON: BEETNIX There are a lot of new businesses opening up on Broughton Street and we’re pleased to announce another locally owned business. Located between Bull Street and Drayton is Beetnix Savannah Juice Bar, a raw, vegan superfood cafe. Beetnix Savannah Juice Bar was created by the founder and Director of Possibility of Dancing Dogs Yoga, Shelley Lowther. The juice bar is open at 6am and offers fresh cold-pressed juices, juice cleanses, nut milks, smoothies. The cafe offers a wide variety of healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner meals.
