WELL FED LETTERS Earth Day should be every day in my humble opinion. Especially now that more and more researchers are telling us that the ice caps are melting, the bees are disappearing, and it’s getting hotter outside. It’s already pretty hot in Savannah so is the answer just to crank up the A/C a few degrees? If we do this, it might be cooler inside but … there is still the fact that the earth is getting hotter. If the earth starts to become hotter, this only worsens issues like drought, boosts production of allergens, and increases smog, mold outbreaks, and wildfires as well. It also impacts our drinking water with saltwater intrusion and changes the weather such as increasing the strength of hurricanes. The Arctic ice caps are melting. These ice caps are so huge that when they melt it causes the oceans to rise – and they are also saying the some coastlines that are heavily populated might disappear in 20-30 years. This is in OUR LIFETIME! Global warming is an issue for everyone on this planet. But you’re just one person, how can you help “save the world”? The easiest way is start by changing the way you live. Recycle and reuse everything from bags to bottles so the landfills will stop being so overloaded, which produce methane, a 20 times stronger greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Vote for candidates who are interested in creating legislation that protects our environment (call the ones who don’t!). This includes insisting our new City leadership supports action on climate change. We can be a part of the change we want to see, including committing as a City to the Paris climate agreement to reduce carbon emissions that will limit global warming to less than 2 degrees Celsius. This committment by cities worldwide can slow the worst effects of climate change, and since cities contribute ⅓ of global emissions, we have a huge responsibility to take action! The most important thing you can do is to get involved with many of the amazing groups right here in Savannah! Come to Earth Day Festival on Saturday, April 16 in Forsyth Park. You will meet so many others who are committed to keep our planet healthy. Together we can (and will) make a difference. And remember, to tell a friend, colleague and family members about Earth Day. Share the importance to recycle, reduce and reuse with everyone. They won’t look at you like you’re crazy – they’ll look at you like someone who loves our Planet Earth and our local health. See you at the Earth Day Festival!

Meet the city of Savannah’s Environmental Services and Sustainability Office Written by Coco Papy

avannah has always taken pride in the fact that our people are down to protect the environment that makes the city so unique. We will go to the wall for our live oaks, tongue lash litterers and take pride in turning spaces deemed “unfit” into thriving community gardens. But Savannah, like many southern cities, has also struggled with protecting what is sacred. Just a few years ago in 2010, the Savannah River was the third most toxic river in America after 5 million pounds of toxic waste was released into the water, followed by an additional 10 million pounds of toxic waste dumped in 2012. This behemoth amount left us ranked eighth most polluted in the nation (Environment Georgia Research & Policy Center, June 26, 2014) and if millions of river waste wasn’t enough of a mind boggle, don’t forget to pay due diligence to some of our other troubles that have been difficult to change, a list that if shared dear reader, would likely take up my full word count. Change is not easymore so if key stakeholders are not on board. But the City of Savannah has made environmental protection and sustainability a priority in moving the city forward. The Environmental Services and Sustainability Office provides services to create and maintain a healthy environment for citizens, provide operational cost savings through environmental compliance support, and promotes resource reduction policy and community engagement. Started in 2014, the ESS office was formed to act as an integrating guidepost for the many sustainability efforts currently happening in Savannah water conservation, community gardens, recycling, energy efficiencyyou name it. “Our job is to really connect the pieces” says Environmental Services & Sustainability Coordinator, Ashley Helmholdt “ “Our health and wellness are linked with the economic and environmental systems. Our aim is to improve City services that ultimately improve quality of life across the community. Our work is identifying where the City policies andpractices need to change, then helping educate citizens so that they can put them into action.” One of the biggest things ESS has on it’s plate is it’s involvement in the upcoming 2016 Earth Day, held on Saturday, April 16 in Forsyth Park. Staff will be on site to work with community members on how they can easily work healthy and sustainable solutions and practices into their everyday lives in a number of workshops throughout the day. The key word here is easilyso often when we look at the work that needs to be done, we look at the big picture and it becomes overwhelming and understandably sobut the office’s goal is to show people that while it is about the big picture, the only way to start is to start small and manageable. “It’s about presenting tangible actions that people can do and then see the benefits right away” continues Helmholdt. “We are really here to build the confidence with City staff and citizens to take the next steps towards a more sustainable future. Ultimately, there is no difference between the air you breathe, the water you drink, the food you eat and the people you know who are all affected by these systems. -Continued on Next Page

The Environmental Services and Sustainability Office is responsible for: * Develop and maintain a comprehensive sustainability plan to guide compliance with City energy use and carbon equivalent reduction commitments *Develop external funding and partnerships to support City sustainability goals *Provide technical assistance on strategies to achieve cost savings through resource conservation and efficiency *Assist with environmental compliance efforts in regulated activities of City operations *Develop and implement community education, outreach, and forums for stakeholder engagement Finding the ways we can be more resourceful, efficient and cost effective with our environmental services at the City is just one way we can lead by example for the community.” The ESS office will also be presenting the Sustainability Plan strategy draft that citizens will be able to vote on. The Plan draft will contain five main categories: Water Resources, Transportation and Mobility, Built Environment and Energy, Green Space and Land Use and Solid Waste . Each category will have potential strategies, which the department is looking for citizen feedback to prioritize. “Community feedback is an enormous part of this process” says Environmental Services & Sustainability Director, Nick Deffley. ”We want to make sure we are getting that. This is an opportunity for the community to provide input into that plan that they will create.” And the outcome?” In a year, we will start implementing strategies in the five different areas” says Deffley.“This is our roadmap on how we move forward in the next 35 years. We’ve measured our carbon footprint and we are doing the carbon footprint for the entire citythat will also inform us and tell us what sorts of reduction goals we want to reach, as well as what’s beyond that. All the tangible things we can do, that’s really going to be informed by residents on Earth Day and then other experts in the community.” Again, start small to help fix what is big. But the key idea behind the strategy draft is to to present what 18

W EL L F E D S AVAN N AH .CO M

the ESS has identified as needs and then to let the community decide what is important to them. “It’s about asking questions and what we look at” Deffley says. “How can we develop more access to healthy foods? How can we develop more accessible transportation? It’s not just an environmental protection piece, it’s also a strong economic driver in tourism, our water resources, our recreation green space and our quality of lifeeverything is part of the system.” The bottom line? Environmental sustainability not only makes sense for a more rounded, competitive and progressive city in the 21st centurybut it is ultimately about helping the three p’s: people, prosperity and the planet. This isn’t just about feeling good about the earthit’s making the quality of life for citizens in Savannah better for everyone. “You know, in Savannah, we have a 26% poverty rate” continues Deffley. “ 1 in 4 Savannahian’s live at or below the federal poverty line and do not always have easy access to transportation, healthy foods, or green spacethese are all challenges. We are working on these issues with the entire community and to ensure that all residents have access to these resources.”

RIDING THE COAST with THE COASTAL GEORGIA GREENWAY Story and Photos by Brad Michael

Coastal Greenway Project (noun) 1) a national cycling and pedestrian path, with a continuous route stretching down the Eastern coast of the United States from the Canadian border in Maine to Key West in Florida. 2) The proposed 155 mile stretch of this path through the state of Georgia. 3) A terrific leap forward for transportation that can use your help!

alternative

When I first heard that by linking South Carolina to Florida through Georgia’s six coastal counties, Georgia becomes a section of the 2,900 mile East Coast Greenway and its lofty goal of linking the entire eastern seaboard with a single continuous path, my mind instantly jumped to the Appalachian Trail. The CGP, however, has a slightly different goal than the AT. “The primary purpose of the Coastal Greenway is for alternative transportation,” Jo told me between pedals.

Have you ever wanted to bike from Canada to Key West? Or maybe you have less grandiose dreams of seeing some of Georgia’s golden isles from the saddle of your bicycle? Or maybe you just want to see Savannah become a safer, more bikefriendly city, with designated, paved paths linking up the areas where we live, work, and play? If any of this sounds like your idea of a good thing, have I got a story for you!

“We want to provide access to existing destinations and facilities along the route.” This means making places like city, county, and state parks, notable historic sites and museums, cafes and coffee shops, the places we live and work, more accessible via bike and foot traffic. The recreational aspect is a very pleasant side effect of hooking these places up to a network of clearly marked, safe trails.

I greased up my gears and hit the trail with Jo Claire Hickson, executive director of Coastal Georgia Greenway. Together we rode the northernmost stretch of Georgia’s portion of this national pathway, and I got a lesson in alternative transportation, and an insightful glimpse into

A dream like this doesn’t just become reality however. It takes hard work, dedication, and an incredible attention to detail to connect 2,900 miles of pavement through beaches, cities, wilderness, and rural areas. Indeed, Jo has been making this dream come true for over twenty years. A landscape architect by trade, she has been the key figure in uniting private interests and state, local, and federal authorities within Georgia, in order to ensure our section of the pathway connects Florida to South Carolina.

Savannah’s rich history and promising future. We followed many of the old transportation routes, over abandoned railways and along once bustling canals, to see where the trail would lead us.

W EL L F E D S AVA N N AH .CO M

The sheer scope of completing anything of this magnitude is astounding. Even our little 155 mile stretch through Georgia is absolutely filled with legal potholes, right of way red tape, accessibility speed bumps, and funding roadblocks. Because the project aims to use as much public land and preexisting infrastructure as possible, even something as seemingly simple as planning a route from one place to another can be incredibly complicated. This complexity was realized at the very beginning of the Georgia trail. How do we deal with highspeed crosstraffic on the cloverleaf at the bridge across the Little Back River to Hutchinson Island. Where do bikes belong on the boat on the ferry ride to River Street? How do we keep parking cars from backing over bikers on the inclined and cobblestoned climb up Factor’s Walk to reach Bay Street. These were just a handful of difficulties that will need to be addressed from the very beginning of the trail’s journey through Georgia. Every mile of the greenway has a mile of challenges to overcome. Although the path forward is daunting, the progress already made has been promising. Twenty-four percent of the total trail length in Georgia has already been completed or funded. Legislature to fund studies and planning efforts has been wellreceived in the statehouse in Atlanta, and municipal and county governments have been receptive to the benefit the greenway can bring to their communities. Existing studies have shown that cycling trails become a “destination activity” that create a positive economic impact in areas where they are built. Cyclists tend to stay longer and spend more money than other, car driving tourists. Enabling bicycle access can increase usage of cultural or historic areas, and can even reduce crime by making unpopulated areas more trafficked. There are also plenty of opportunities for reviving blighted areas along the trail, including a proposed park along the old locks of the SavannahOgeechee Canal at the end of Indian Street. The journey is far from over though, and there are plenty of ways you can help the Coastal Georgia Greenway become a reality by its expected completion date of 2025. Part of the funding needs to come from private sources, so consider donating or becoming a corporate sponsor of the project at their website (coastalgeorgiagreenway. org). Federal and State organizations will match private donations by up to 500%, so every $1 you give becomes $6 the organization receives. There’s also plenty of work to be done coordinating and getting the word out, and Jo is looking for interns and office assistants with a wide range of skills and availability.

Jo Claire Hickson, executive director of Coastal Georgia Greenway.

Of particular need are illustrators and photographers to visualize existing and future sections of the trail, as well as managers for social media campaigns and website content. Anyone with some extra time and a desire to help the project succeed should contact Jo via the Contact Us page on the website. If you want to experience some of the trail early, there will be fundraising rides along some of the route, including an upcoming seven day ride through McIntosh County (including Sapelo Island). Check the website for updates. We only have to look to Atlanta, and the success they’ve had with neighborhoods and businesses blooming along the existing and proposed route of the Beltline, to find a model for success. The Greenway, like the railroad terminals that came before it, can unite people of different backgrounds and socio economic classes with a common experience. The Coastal Georgia Greenway is a great way to make our city and state a more accessible place for alternative transportation, and provides some amazing rides through some of our most picturesque landscapes as an extra bonus. If it can bring us together, too, it’s a nobrainer. I, for one, can’t wait to start planning bike sojourns to St Marys and Charleston, and all the amazing places on the other side!

T

he art itself is simple, but the meaning behind it carries a powerful message. With nothing more than cardboard circles and a desire to spread positive energy, Joanne Morton has managed to create a forest of community affirmations with her latest art project. The contributors, more than 300 total, span the continental U.S. with backgrounds as diverse as the art they created. Union workers in Savannah, schoolgirls in Tallahassee, German tourists in New Orleans and octogenarian church ladies in Houston were all summoned by Morton to emblaze a circle with their own hopes and dreams. “When I first envisioned this project, I expected people to be specific, to write down what they wanted – something tangible,” said Morton. “But I found most chose to put energy into the world instead of asking for themselves. And that’s the idea, that’s why we’re here, to serve.” Each circle is like a snowflake, unique and one-of-a-kind. Some brightly colored with glitter and pizzazz; others a simple sentence written in black ink. They share a common positivity though, bringing the awareness that we are all connected, on what Morton calls a “vision board for humanity.” “Our thoughts create reality,” she said. “When you state something out loud and share it, there is power to that.” The art project is aligned with Morton’s beliefs that humans create their own renewable and sustainable energy source, and her personal goal is to share that energy. Displaying the art at Gallery F.A.R. (Fine Art of Recycling) further supports this mission for humanity.

Gallery F.A.R.

Each piece of art must be made with at least 70 percent recycled material and each artist is encouraged to conduct a workshop or education venture sharing how the art was created. Many raw materials are available at the center for use, free of charge. Over the past six years, more than 30 artists have created macramé, sculptures, mixed media pieces, planters and woven decorate art out of abandoned electoral wires. The gallery encourages the manipulation of recycled material, making them into intricate art pieces that create a conversation. “We live in a world where you can just throw things away and not think about where it goes,” said Abby Murphy, activities coordinator for the center. “This is a way to think about that waste differently - thinking how can we repurpose this? How can it have a different function?” The materials at the center, and all misfit materials waiting to be turned into something else, are part of a bigger picture – a collective consciousness for creators. Morton’s display, entitled “Magic Passion Love Manifesting Mobile, a Vision Board for Humanity,” examines that collective consciousness, and suggests that everyone has a part to play in its evolution. “When you walk through and see what everyone’s intention and wishes are, you realize we all want the same things. We all want that sustainability,” she said. “So now’s the time to start coming together as a human race for solutions. What better way to do that than through art.” For more information, visit: www. recycling.chathamcounty.org.

“Magic Passion Love Manifesting Mobile, a Vision Board for Humanity” will be on display at Gallery F.A.R., 1321 Eisenhower Dr., during the month of April with an opening reception April 14, 5-7 p.m. and a Positive Energy Presentation April 21, 5-7 p.m. The community is invited to participate in the project by adding thier own circle of intention during business hours all month long.

Exploring Edible Education & Celebrating Ag Day Written by Rhonda L. Barlow, MPH, RD, LD, CLC

“Rain, rain, go away, come again another day, is the song that the Auburn University School of Agriculture Ag Ambassadors could have sang as they prepared packets and displays to celebrate Ag Day at Shuman Elementary. Rain was pouring on the outside but the Shuman students were having fun with the farm on the inside. Six stations were set up for the students to rotate through to learn about the different areas of agriculture. The Ag Ambassadors, an enthusiastic group of students selected to represent their university and to enhance the image of Alabama agriculture, used talents and their love for agriculture to engage the students in fun and interesting agriculture activities. The practical lessons and observations experienced on this day of celebration reinforce the lessons learned in classrooms. Learning is so much more fun when they do not realize they are learning. Sandra Cason, the school garden manager, collaborated with the Ag Ambassador advisor, Amanda Martin, to organize this educational celebration. As the students as Shuman were learning the practical reason for science, math, and reading, the teachers from across the Chatham School District gathered at Garrison School 26

W EL L F E D S AVA N N AH .CO M

of Visual and Performing Arts to learn how to teach edible education. The workshop was sponsored and conducted by the Farm to School Coordination team at Georgia Organics and focused on training teachers of kindergarten through 5th grade. This one day workshop was designed to assist Golden Radish Award winning school districts with strengthening their Farm to School Programs. Teachers learned how to engage their students in the edible education process by using games, taste tests, guided reading exercises, and practical activities in the school garden. If you would like to volunteer with the Chatham Farm to School Program, please call Rhonda Barlow at (912) 395-1246.
