L-Theanine (as Suntheanine ) has been shown to influence brainwave activity, possibly via an influence on neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin, suggesting its potential benefits in reducing stress, anxiety and depression. Taking L- Theanine before bedtime helps to put you in a calm, relaxed state so that you can enter sleep more rapidly, sleep deeper and wake up without grogginess. Planning to fly across one or more time zones? L- Theanine can help alleviate jet lag and get your sleep cycle back on track.

Something about spiralised veggies makes dishes more delicious. The unit does more than make spirals, it also chops and shreds anything in minutes, processing fruit, nuts and cheese too. Olgani is a brand with nonabrasive ingredients that controls plague and detoxes at the same time. In fact, theobromine protects teeth from tooth decay more effectively than fluoride and has no detrimental side effects. At first I found the taste very unusual and after some time I grew to love it. PUTTING TH E P OW I N E M P OWE R M E NT Pasella presenter, motivational speaker and health and fitness enthusiast Mishka Patel shares her thoughts on living life well. WHAT D O E S L IVIN G L IF E WE L L ME AN TO YO U? I’ve always prioritised living a healthy lifestyle. After losing my Mum to cancer in 2015 I became the caretaker of my seven-year-old sister, and this became even more important to me. I believe a healthy lifestyle is a balanced lifestyle, and I consciously work towards achieving this. For so long I struggled with this, but when put to the task, I was forced to put it into practice. I used to come down really hard on myself when I wasn’t able to tick everything off my to-do list for the day. Now I set myself more reasonable daily goals, and also schedule in dedicated self-care time. HOW D O YO U STAY IN ME N TAL AN D P HYSIC AL SHAP E ? I wake up at 05:00 each morning and make sure I start my day the right way. I spend about 20 minutes writing my goals for the day in my journal, and the next 40 minutes to an hour, training. This is a non-negotiable routine for me. From running and Sweat 1000 to yoga, I mix up my exercise routine as much as possible. In the evenings, I spend 30 minutes to an hour reading. I believe we should learn something new each day, and love devouring any helpful information I can get my hands on. Currently I’m reading (and loving!) Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes, and I also enjoy anything by Robin Sharma.

TE AM BUIL DIN G USIN G HO RSE S I never imagined that the greatest insight into my interactive and communicative abilities would come from a horse. After a humbling team dynamic experience with The Human Spiral and Equinox Trust in Cape Town’s sleepy Noordhoek, I can recommend some time in the arena for anyone wanting to learn more about themselves and how they show up in the world. Everyone operates in a team to some extent – whether it be within a formal working environment, a family unit, or a circle of friends or peers. The single most important determinant of the success of the whole is how its members communicate. By understanding and appreciating individual preferences and the value each member has to offer, individuals within the team are able to develop effective communication strategies that support the shared vision. Olivia Badach of The Human Spiral is an accredited Insights Discovery© and Team Effectiveness practitioner. She focuses on developing teams through individual self-discovery and the awareness of the impact we each have on others and the world around us. Her transformational workshop experiences address team culture and dynamics in various interactive ways. One of these is through her partnership with Equinox Trust. They use the abilities of horses and their natural herd dynamics to develop clarity amongst the team and reach specific desired outcomes.

“The basic building block of good teambuilding is for a leader to promote the feeling that every human being is unique and adds value.” - Anon

FOR MORE INFORMATION Each Human Spiral & Equinox Trust journey is based on the team’s specific needs, desired outcomes and available resources. They focus on measurable outcomes, and operate as a great practical tool for teams wanting to move forward in a more cohesive way. For more information contact olivia@thehumanspiral.co.za or visit www.thehumanspiral.co.za.

Our experience began with a theoretical investigation of responsibilities, effectiveness and culture within our team, and moved on to ‘test the theory’ with the horses in Noordhoek. While cognitive perceptions and assessments could take us so far, the more subtle, non-verbal and less conscious team dynamics were almost immediately brought to the fore by the horses. Veritable diagnostic wizards, they showed a truly uncanny ability to reflect. Values, challenges, efficiencies and areas of improvements showed up in the individuals and the team as a whole. Their unbiased reflections could not be denied, and many a personal (and group) revelation was shared after our time with them. There is no riding involved, so the experience is accessible to everyone. We went through a series of focused ground-based activities. During this time, qualified facilitators were able to observe how the horses responded to and interacted with each of us. We were encouraged to use creative strategies to problem solve and negotiate with one another and the horses. The metaphors that emerged were profound. They linked to the team’s working dynamic at every turn. Not only was our sense of collaboration, cooperation, creativity and cohesion put to the test – we were brought face to face with our own unique personal challenges and desires too. After a few days of processing everything that emerged in the arena, we came together again for a much-needed debrief and evaluation session back in the office. Values, beliefs and behaviours that had never been previously discussed were communicated with ease, and earnest conversation gave rise to a very practical action plan for the team moving forward. It proved to be an invaluable experience for the team.

THE FY N B O S H OT E L In the historic company gardens of Cape Town, local farmer Giselle from Swellendam designed a delightful experience involving apothecary workshops and Fynbos tasting. We had an amazing stroll through the Company Gardens and ended up in a fun-filled and interactive laboratory styled destination. Here we tasted a variety of medicinal brews, vinegar tinctures and oil infusions. The finale involved digestives paired with homemade Turkish Delight. This ‘first of it’s kind’ experience is an immersion into the Cape’s indigenous and diverse Fynbos and an opportunity to explore South Africa’s botanical heritage with distinctive Fynbos flavours and long standing traditional remedies. Giselle heads up the experience and sources most of the plants from her farm so you’re guaranteed the freshest daily pickings. When facilitating the tasting, she injects a contagious child-like excitement, which makes her offering that much richer. After the tasting, we were lucky enough to go to the Fynbos ‘Hotel’- Cape Town’s latest, trendiest pop-up hotel. Here, you’ll need to put aside all your expectations of a hotel room and prepare to engage with nature on every level! You’ll literally ‘sleep on nature’ in a multi-layered bed handcrafted with 100% natural materials – think coconut fibre, eucalyptus slats and even seaweed aids. Lida of Coco-Mat South Africa teamed up with Giselle to bring this novel experience to life. Be prepared to awaken your inner mixologist as your uniquely crafted Fynbos experience unfolds – no stone has been left unturned. Overlooking the City Bowl, this ‘one-night getaway’ was designed for 2 people sharing. But book fast because this hotel only has one room! The price for the night’s stay includes the Fynbos Tasting. O RGAN ISE YO UR BRAIN Meeting Heidi Stumph turned out to be fascinating. She operates in a colourful healing room in Durbanville with anatomy posters adorning the walls. As a holistic practitioner Heidi works with the physical and energetic levels. Heidi explains, “we’re constantly receiving input from our environment both internally and externally which our body processes subconsciously. These memories are stored at a cellular level in our skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments.” This makes absolute sense to me being well aware that when I’m stressed I often wake up the next day with a heavy head and stiffness in my body. Endless ‘to dos’ and environmental stressors like pollutants and toxins have a negative effect on us, scattering our energies and impacting our overall wellbeing. This can result in dis-ease in the body, with symptoms from fatigue and pain to impaired immune function. Neural Organisation Technique (N.O.T) apparently rebalances the body, alleviates symptoms, and in addition, helps organise brain activity. It’s based on Applied Kinesiology, which addresses our basic survival systems and aims at bringing the systems back into a state of balance. A more balanced body and mind results in a reduction of health related ailments and increases our ability to thrive. After an hour-long session, I certainly left feeling calm and centered and was ready to take on my day with renewed energy. This is definitely a healing modality I’m eager to explore further. SHOPPING THE VEGAN WAY by Judith Johnson

“My daughter has become a vegan, what on earth do I feed her?” is a common question our resident dietitian, Judith Johnson gets asked. Veganism is one of the most prolific health trends with statistics that show a huge surge in people opting for plant-based diets. “It’s simply about shopping for the right ingredients, understanding the nutrient balance and collecting some basic recipes”, says Judith. Many people don’t realise just how delicious vegan food is. Here are some guidelines and preparation tips to help plan a vegan diet.

20 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S WA R E H O U S E . CO M

"Make your immune system happy on a vegan diet with phytonutrients, polyphenols and bio actives from plenty of fruits, vegetables and salads. Add a daily serving of microgreens or sprouted seeds like alfalfa or broccoli sprouts." WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR Find the balance between convenience and quality. Make sure there are enough proteins (with all the amino acids), iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium and plenty of fruit and vegetables for sufficient phytonutrients and adequate soluble fibre. It’s tempting to rely on quick, convenient ready-made meals like veggie burgers, soya patties, or vegan fries and if it’s a vegan product, you might expect it to be healthy. But that’s not always the case. Read the labels carefully. Look out for additives like added sugars, hydrogenated fats or trans fatty acids. Avoid products with too many fillers (especially wheat-based flours), commercially prepared sauces or artificial flavourings, colourants or irradiated spices. Most of these are commonly found in readymade vegan products. When choosing soya products, opt for fermented products like Miso or Tempeh. WHAT ABOUT PROTEIN There are plenty of options to choose from: include a protein powder with hemp seeds for an excellent amino acid ratio. The Pea and Hemp proteins from LifeMatrix, Synerchi, Drasanvi Chlorella powder or hemp seeds from Superfoods are perfect choices. Other good proteins come from tree nuts (peanuts are a little too inflammatory); seeds like sunflower, sesame, pumpkin. Chia seeds especially are fabulous for increasing your soluble fibre intake, they contain Omega 3 fats and are anti-inflammatory. Sesame seeds are a great source of calcium. To get the best from your nuts and to improve digestive qualities, activate them. This involves soaking them overnight (add a tsp of salt to a glass of water per cup of nuts) then dehydrating them for about 12 hours. This makes them much easier on the digestive system. IRON Iron is an essential nutrient as it’s a key component of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood. The reason people mention iron as a challenge in vegan diets is that when plant foods with iron are eaten on their own, the iron binds to the phytates and oxalates preventing absorption. Adding Vitamin C increases iron absorption considerably. Vegetables, like broccoli and bok choy, which are high in iron, are also high in vitamin C so in this case, iron is better absorbed. Commonly eaten combinations, like beans and tomato sauce or tofu and broccoli, also result in improved iron absorption. Interestingly, surveys show that vegans are not any less iron deficient than their meat-eating counterparts although vegans tend to have lower iron stores. VITAMIN B12 B12 also comes up for discussion in a vegan diet as it is found solely in animal products. Eating nutritional yeast flakes fortified with B12 is a great solution. They double up as a great alternative to parmesan cheese and make soups and salads taste delicious. Having a really good gut microbiome is important too, as certain bacteria found along the intestinal wall are able to secrete vitamin B12. AS FOR VITAMIN D Sunlight is the key, and for vegans (where seafood is not an option) a great source of vitamin D is from mushrooms; all varieties are good although they only synthesize Vitamin D2 and not the D3, which the body uses for good bone density.

SHOP THE SOLUTION People newly converting to veganism often look for replacement items to foods they are familiar with and supplements that boost nutritional content. Here are some alternatives and suggestions for making your vegan diet delicious.

R AT H E R T H A N A N E G G Being plant-based doesn’t mean missing out, especially with the No Egg™ Egg Replacer from the brand Orgran. It’s made from natural ingredients and means you can make quality cakes and baked goodies that end up having similar texture to those with eggs. The replacer has no cholesterol, no lactose and of course, no egg! It’s made from ingredients like Tapioca flour, potato starch and vegetable gum.

M O R E T H A N J U ST B Taking a green supplement is a great way of being absolutely sure about getting your life building amino acids and vitamins. Chlorella is an algae that grows in clear water and is rich in proteins and nutrition. The variety from Drasanvi Superfoods is an organic Chlorella powder with valuable vitamins like pantothenic acid, folic acid, biotin, vitamins B2 and B12 and minerals like iron, zinc and phosphorus. It’s easy to add to juices and smoothies.

A C A S E F O R C A S S AVA Making vegan bakes can be tricky if you don’t know how. Using Health Riot’s cassava flour is the best place to start. It comes from the tropical fields of Brazil, and is the fluffiest flour you’ll meet. It has the same fluffy texture and mild neutral flavour of ordinary wheat flour; but no GMO, no allergenic wheat, gluten, grains or nuts. That means none of the bad stuff and loads of the good. 24 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S WA R E H O U S E . CO M

VEGAN SHOPPING LIST – THE ESSENTIALS 1. VEGETABLES & FRUIT Find a supply of fresh organic veggies and fruit. Dehydrated options are great to keep in storage when you haven’t been out to shop. Growing your own sprouts means always having a ready supply of fresh greens on hand. It’s not that difficult and creates a nice living addition to the kitchen. Broccoli, Cauliflower, Baby Spinach, Kale, Aubergines, Egg Plant, Leeks, Butternut, Sweet Potato, Mushrooms, Peppers, Bok Choi, Lettuce, Parsley, Sprouts, Rocket, Tomato, Cucumber, Avocado 2. LEGUMES, RICE, GRAINS A filling base can be made up from any kind of grain. Eating rice and lentils together offers a great nutritional spectrum. Whole food and organic options are always the best. Brown Rice, Wild Rice, Chickpeas, Butter Beans, Kidney Beans, Lentils, Buckwheat, Quinoa 3. FLAVOUR Adding nutritional yeast flakes to most meals adds immense flavour, miso paste to stirfry’s and soups is highly tasty and you can’t beat a generous sprinkle of hemp seeds to your salad. Get familiar with ingredients like these and you’ll soon be an expert. Nutritional Yeast Flakes, Hemp Seeds, Miso, Braggs Amino’s, Fermented Soy 4. SEEDS, NUTS & NUT BUTTERS Remember to always soak your chia seeds before using them, as they are difficult to digest unless presoaked. Keep a store of activated nuts ready to use. Try a spoonful of macadamia nut butter added to oats or a seed cracker. Chia Seeds, Sunflower Seeds, Sesame Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds, Cashews, Almonds, Walnuts, Macadamia Nut Butter 5. From edible petals to botanical beverages, we look at a full flower-child array with lavender lattes, dandelion soup, lemon elderflower popsicles and Turkish saffron yoghurt mousse. DANDELION SOUP Serves 4 This detoxifying soup has bitter dandelion greens soothed by cauliflower and creamed with avo. It is loaded with Vitamin A, C and K. Dandelion is a real foraging ingredient although watch out if you are foraging in the suburbs as it may be contaminated with pesticides. Opt for organic or wild harvested. Most importantly, add the dandelion greens after the other ingredients are cooked and off the stove. There will be sufficient heat to wilt them and balance the bitterness without affecting the nutrient profile. IN GR ED IEN T S *1 TBSP extra-virgin olive oil *1 medium cauliflower (about 4 cups when chopped) *2 chopped medium shallots *4 crushed garlic cloves *5 cups vegetable broth *2 heaped cups torn dandelion greens (minus the stems) *½ ripe avocado cut into squares *Veggie or Himalayan salt and black pepper MET H O D 1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot. Add the cauliflower and shallots. 2. Cook for about 7 minutes until the shallots are soft. Add the garlic. 3. After a few minutes, add the vegetable broth. Boil, then reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer for 10-15 minutes or until the cauliflower is tender. Keep the lid on the pot. 4. Take the pot off the stove and stir in the dandelion greens. Leave the soup to cool for 10 minutes then add avo. Puree until thick and creamy.

They pack a juicy, guilt-free tang and will need no introduction at your next soiree. Mmm…Happy Spring. EDIBLE ALOE & ELDERFLOWER POPSICLES Makes 10 IN GR ED I E N T S *3 cups filtered water *1 cup of juiced organic green apples *2 juiced lemons *2 tablespoons Aloe juice *1 tablespoon elderflower cordial *Selection of various edible flowers MET H O D 1. Place petals inside the popsicle moulds. Layer them on top of each other so they’re spacious and not compacted. 2. Mix the filtered water, juiced apple and lemon, aloe and elderflower cordial in a large jug and stir well to combine. Do a taste test and if you’d like it slightly sweeter, add some organic coconut nectar or raw local honey. 3. Gently pour the liquid mixture into the popsicle moulds trying not to dislodge the petals too much. Insert popsicle sticks and place in the freezer until frozen solid. 4. To remove from the moulds gently place bottom of moulds in warm water until the popsicles pull free.

6 H E A LT H Y DIGESTION TIPS

38 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S WA R E H O U S E . CO M

DIGESTIVE REMEDY™ Natural Digestion is a primary component of traditional Chinese medicine. Rather than any kind of deprivation, calorie counting and stringent exercise it considers balance, quality and enjoyment to be important.

F

or centuries Chinese Medicine has taken into account the strong connection between brain and gut and emphasised the importance of not being stressed while eating. This is just one of the pointers in optimising digestion. We look at various directives recommended by Chinese Medicine for a healthy eating experience and harmonious gut.

*STA RT YO UR ME A L H U N G RY – Hunger pangs signal your brain to prepare the body for eating. It’s important to feel ready to eat before mindlessly eating according to a time slot. When hungry, we produce more saliva which is where digestion starts. A renowned Chinese doctor recommends that after a meal we should be 30 percent hungry and 70 percent satisfied. *L O O K AT YO UR F O OD – Before eating, take a look at your food. First eat with your eyes as this triggers saliva. Taoists sometimes call saliva ‘the foundation of youth’. Saliva has glucosamine, an amino acid naturally produced in the body for regenerating cartilage, and enzymes to help digest. Give your body a bit of time to salivate between each mouthful. *P L AC E YO UR ME A L W I T H C A R E A N D E M P H ASIS O N THE TABL E – This is done to feel a sense of abundance and anticipatory pleasure. Feeling pleasure optimises digestion. On the other end of the scale, negative feelings will compromise your digestion. *D R IN K LIQ UID S AT RO OM T E M P E R AT U R E OR WARME R – Cold food and drinks compromise digestion and Chinese medicine believe they contribute towards fat creation. Your stomach is energetically warm and cold water disrupts the energetic equilibrium. Your body has to expend energy to warm up the temperature and that slows your digestion. *E AT W IT H C H O P ST I CK S A N D S M A L L B OW L S – Or if not that, be mindful of dishing up small portions, having smaller mouthfuls, chewing twice as much as you usually do and refrain from eating too much. *IN VO K E A P EACE F U L STAT E B E F OR E E AT I N G – Stress and anxiety compromises digestion as it sends blood circulation away from the digestive system towards the muscles. If in a stressful state, do some deep breathing to calm your system or rather don’t eat until you feel more balanced.

ANTIOXIDANTS Antioxidants are natural compounds that help protect the body from harmful free radicals. Free radicals are atoms or groups of atoms that can damage cells, impairing the immune system and lead to infections and various degenerative diseases like heart disease and cancer. Antioxidants play a beneficial role in disease prevention.

GRE E N TE A Green Tea contains compounds known as polyphenols, including phytochemicals that have antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral and health enhancing properties. Tests on epigallocatechin (EGCC), a particular type of polyphenol in green tea, show that it is able to penetrate the body’s cells and shield DNA from hydrogen perioxide, a potent free radical. Green tea protects against cancer, lowers cholesterol levels, and reduces the clotting tendency of the blood. It also shows promise as a weight loss aid that can promote the burning of fat and help regulate blood sugar and insulin levels. GRAP E SE E D E X TRAC T Because Grape Seed extract is both oil and water soluble, it can penetrate all types all types of cell membranes, delivering antioxidant protection throughout the body. What’s more, is it’s one of the few substances that can cross the blood brain barrier, which means it has the potential to protect brain cells from free radical damage.

A S H WAGA N D H A This is one of the most powerful herbs in Ayurvedic healing, in Sanskrit ashwagandha means ‘the smell of a horse’, suggesting the herb offers the vigour and strength of a stallion. Traditionally, ashwagandha has been prescribed as a nerve tonic and adaptogen - helping the body adapt to emotional and physical stressors. Classic use in India is for sickly children, weakness and debility in old age, rheumatism, constipation, insomnia, nervous conditions, stress, goiter, joint inflammation, parasites, hormone balance, and more. Root powder made into a paste can treat boils, ulcers, and skin irritations. Ashwagandha is used to help strengthen immunity after illness, chemotherapy, or surgery. It is a highly effective, evidence-based remedy for anxiety and stress by lowering cortisol levels and mimicking the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA. In my personal experience ashwagandha helped me manage stress and boost my immunity. This is my favourite recommendation to take regularly.

EC H IN AC EA This herb is most famous for its therapeutic and healing effects, and ability to boost the immune system. Research shows it increases the body’s white blood cells. Because it has such a unique blend of naturally occurring chemicals that combat both infection and inflammation, it helps prevent illness, and eases inflammation. Along with potential pain-relieving properties, Echinacea also has antiviral and antioxidant properties promoting a healthy body and strong immune system. Do not take Echinacea if you are on immune-suppressants, using anti-retrovirals for HIV/AIDS, if you have Tuberculosis or auto-immune illnesses, or when using corticosteroids. A S H WAGA N D H A The adaptogenic properties of ashwaganda reduce the immune suppressive effects of stress on the body, and keep the immune system strong. Just like Echinacea, Ashwagandha can increase both white blood cell and killer cell counts, which also help strengthen the immunity and fight a wide range of diseases. Ashwagandha is known to increase endurance, improve brain function, and reduce aches and pains. T H YME Throughout the centuries, herbalists have used thyme to relieve chest and respiratory disorders, coughs, colds, and bronchitis. It is antibacterial, antifungal and spasmolytic, so it fights the agents that cause bronchitis and helps calm a spasmodic cough. It is also an excellent expectorant, helping the body eliminate accumulated mucus.

here’s so much sensation in our mouths and at the same time there’s almost no pain that equals toothache. Here is a guide that helps safeguard your mouth, prevent fillings and toothache, guard against mouth ulcers and infection and keep it in optimal condition. 1. OI L S W I S HIN G & SE SAME M A S S AG E This is a traditional practice in Ayuvedic medicine and requires lightly warmed pure organic sesame oil. Put about 2 tablespoons of the warmed oil in your mouth and gargle, then swish it around your gums and pull it through your teeth for about 3 minutes. This is done to strengthen your teeth and gums, clean them and expel toxins. Take a bit more of the oil and apply to your fingers, then massage the gums. This practice is called kavala and is used to prevent fillings, soothe impacted wisdom teeth, heal receding gums and strengthen sensitive teeth. It can be done daily although twice a week is also beneficial.

2 . TO N GUE SC RAP IN G In both Chinese and Indian medicine, the tongue is an extremely important indicator of health. It’s often used as a diagnostic marker and regarded as the organ of not only taste and speech but cognition as well. Tongue diagnosis looks at colour, texture, the size and shape of taste buds, irregularities in pattern and swelling or scanty tongue volume. Experiencing different tastes promotes digestion, prevents craving and creates a harmonious relationship to food. That’s why keeping the tongue healthy is imperative. This is done using a stainless steel scraper gently scraping the entire tongue from back to front about 10 times every morning. The practice removes toxins, keeps the taste buds receptive, clears out dead bacteria, improves flavour, reduces bad breath and is also said to clear the mind. It definitely creates a more hygienic mouth.

WHAT IS A P RO ST H O D ON T I ST A prosthodontist is a dental specialist with an additional 3 to 4 years study after graduation. There are about 50 prosthodontists in South Africa recognised by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). They are trained to deliver fine dentistry from simple restorations to advanced reconstructions. There are often many approaches to a restorative solution for long-term dental health and a prosthodontist determines comprehensive diagnoses and treatment plans. As Johannesburg based prosthodontist Dr. Gerald Kaplan says, “It is like building a building - you first consult an architect who puts the whole plan together and recommends a team to undertake the project. It is the same thing with a prosthodontist. Ideally he should be the one to formulate a comprehensive treatment plan and where necessary, put together the team to offer the patient the approach that they choose to follow. This team may include a periodontist, orthodontist, maxillofacial surgeon, the general dentist, the dental technician, and oral hygienist.” Dr Kaplan operates from Norwood in Johannesburg and can be contacted on 011 483-2281. www.prosthodontist.co.za

3 . H E R B A L TO OTHPASTE Many toothpastes have ingredients that actually erode teeth over time. Using a herbal toothpaste is incredibly important. Sweet toothpaste is reported to thicken saliva and lead to tar formation. Fluoride and baking soda are common components of toothpaste yet are said to erode the gums. “Toothpaste should be bitter and astringent, and made with herbs like neem, triphala, cinnamon, clove and fennel”, says a leading Ayurvedic doctor. Once you get used to using herbal and natural toothpastes, your body will recognise them as much more beneficial than non-herbal varieties. 4 . F L OS S It’s said that if you only do one thing towards mouth hygiene then flossing is the thing to do. Rated as more beneficial than tooth brushing, floss will keep infection and plaque build-up from occurring. Opt for natural floss and keep an extra pack on you so you can floss during the day after meals. To keep infection at bay, add a few drops of tea tree oil to your floss. 5. MINERALS Teeth issues can often be prevented, by getting enough minerals. Besides supplementing with calcium, magnesium and zinc, eating sesame seeds is an added option. A mouthful of raw white organic sesame seeds eaten in the morning before breakfast is highly recommended. Besides ingesting them, rubbing the seeds against the teeth is a great way of polishing and cleaning them. 5 . L I COR I CE RO OT Natural unadulterated licorice root is said to clean the mouth, help promote salivation and has natural plant chemicals that kill mouth bacteria as well as preventing the build up of plaque. Besides that, the stick makes a great toothbrush. 6 . C AC AO Brushing with cacao powder is proven to remove biofilm from the teeth, preventing fillings from developing. It’s the tannins, polyphenols, and flavonoids – strong antioxidants in cacao that help improve the environment of the mouth and promote healthy teeth.

7 . TURME RIC To relieve swollen gums use powdered organic turmeric massaged onto the gums. It also has an anti-inflammatory effect. 8 . BUC HU Buchu tea distilled and cooled is an excellent mouthwash and breath freshener. Even better is buchu water. You can use it to gargle and rinse the mouth. Drinking buchu is also a natural way of deoderising the body and the mouth. It has great detoxification properties. 9 . AML A Known as Indian gooseberry, Amla is well known for supporting longevity and youthfulness. It’s also known to rebuild oral health and strengthen gums and teeth. Taken in capsule form, it has a long-term benefit to the mouth and gums. Take note that it needs time to work on the whole body before effects are noted on the teeth and gums. TO N GUE DIAGN O SIS Both Traditional Chinese medicine and Indian Ayurvedic medicine use the tongue to diagnose the state of health and indicate any imbalances in the body. Different parts of the tongue correspond to different organs of the body. Looking at the tongue in thirds: the front third represents the lungs, heart, chest, and neck; the middle relates to the liver, spleen, stomach and pancreas; and the back to the small intestine and colon. Swollen areas of the tongue, the colour, the coating on the tongue, different textures are all used to denote physical and emotional imbalances. A thick coating on the tongue indicates toxins in the stomach, a line down the middle of the tongue could indicate holding onto emotions.

T H E A RT O F LETTING GO by Lara Potgieter

The real cause of the stress in our lives is not our perceived problems, but our mind’s incessant commentary about them. Why is this mental chatter so pervasive, and how do we learn to let go of it?

52 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S WA R E H O U S E . CO M

When it comes to managing stress and anxiety, there are few things more important than realising that you are not the voice inside your head.

Peak anywhere, anytime with… *Pure Oxygen infused in Mint

Our inner narration is really just our minds’ way of making us feel more comfortable with and in control of the world around us. If we experience something that doesn’t fit the model of the world as we’d like it to be, we internally verbalise, judge and complain about the disturbance. The mind is always trying to process our experiences in a way that makes them fit neatly into our views of the past and our dreams for the future, and what we end up experiencing is a mental model or presentation of the world, rather than the stark, unfiltered experience of reality itself. When it comes to managing stress and anxiety, there are few things more important than realising that you are not the voice in your head. You’re able to notice when you are thinking and judge the quality and content of your thoughts, so you must be distinct from them. You are the witness – the consciousness that notices the voice talking. Letting go of inner turmoil involves the conscious (and continuous) remembering of the fact that - no matter what the voice in your head has to say - it is still just a voice talking, and you (the real you!) are the one listening. Step back and view it objectively. You don’t need to think about or change it – just notice it. Remember that you are the subject and your thoughts are the objects. After time you will come to realise that many of them have no relevance to the present moment. They are simply making you feel better or worse about the unfolding of reality. Most of us have become conditioned to leave our centre of objective awareness and get sucked into the energy of our thoughts and emotions at any given moment. When we concentrate on this mental chatter, it becomes charged with energy and power, growing in importance and demanding even more of our attention. Significant stress can be caused by a passing thought or emotion that somehow becomes the centre of our inner (and eventually outer) worlds.

While you may feel that you wouldn’t struggle with anxiety-provoking mental chatter if you could just change things in the outside world, it’s safe to say that few have become truly at peace by simply rearranging their external circumstances. The mind will always find ‘the next problem’ to focus on. The real solution is to let go and take the seat of witness consciousness. Come to know yourself as the one who watches the inner voice that is never content. Watch yourself be anxious, without trying to analyse or fix it. Just be aware of what it going on inside and remember that you are the one noticing both the events and the thoughts and emotions they evoke. When you feel your consciousness start to get drawn into a distressing thought or emotion, practise the art of letting the real you – the witness – take a step back and relax and release behind it. Relax your shoulders and the space around your heart, letting the disturbance simply come up and pass through you. It takes only a moment of conscious effort, and it will pass. This simple yet profound practice will get easier over time, and eventually you will spend most of your life comfortably seated in witness consciousness. Until then, play with the habit of letting go and falling behind the sense of being bothered. Just keep consciously choosing to no longer become involved in the melodrama of the mind. You will be pulled time and again, and each will be another opportunity to learn to relax and release. As you begin to find yourself living from this place of letting go, the stuff of the world that once bothered you will cease to be a problem. It will just be something you watch. It will keep changing, while you – the vast awareness behind it all – remain the same.

Support your commitment to the spiritual practice of letting go by nurturing your body and soul with these anxiety-busting self-care rituals from Holistic Health and Wellness Coach Ashleigh Harrison: *Enhance your body’s ability to support you in letting go by nourishing yourself with a wholefoods-based diet. Avoid coffee and alcohol, and add powerful superfoods like maca, camu camu and cacao (if you’re not sensitive to its stimulating effect) as well as adaptogens such as ashwagandha and reishi (if you’re not experiencing autoimmune issues or taking blood thinners). *Find exercise that’s right for you. This can be according to your body type, preference, energy levels or biological rhythms. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, and finding exercise that you enjoy is the best way of making sure you move your body regularly to support the flexibility of your mind. *Be on your soul’s side and learn to say no to people and places that don’t serve you. Take some time out for self-care. This can be anything you enjoy doing – whether it be going for a massage, taking a morning stroll, buying yourself flowers or staying in to apply a face mask and watch your favourite movie.

You will never speak to anyone more than you speak to yourself in your head. Remember to be kind to yourself. Have you ever considered doing a scalp detox? Think about it, we lather all kinds of shampoos and conditioners on our hair and rub them into the scalp at the same time. We sweat under our beach hats or in our hot yoga classes or trail run. We pay so much attention to our hair and not too much to the actual scalp. Doing a scalp scrub creates a deep clean, feels amazing, boosts circulation and is excellent to stimulate healthy hair growth. Replace one of your shampoo rituals with a scalp scrub once a week.

*Mix up some activated charcoal and coconut oil, the charcoal pulls impurities from the scalp and hair follicle, while the coconut oil leaves strands soft and deeply nourished. You will feel ultra clean. *Another combination is apple cider vinegar and Himalayan salt. It’s a pH balanced mix that will detox and revive your scalp and hair removing build up from shampoos and conditioners. Use massaging movements along the side of your head working towards the back then the front and finally on top, keep going and repeat the tour at least 3 times. If you have a willing family member, get them to do a full head massage. It’s one of the most relaxing practices you can do.

This is an urban escape you don’t have to travel very far to get to. Hands-on Retreat has a bubbling brook running through the property, has separate wooden massage cubicles and relaxation gazebos on the expansive grounds and a deck overlooking the gardens where some of the massages take place. Couples needing a romantic break, new mothers wanting to catch up on sleep, girlie sister circles and busy executives all converge here to reset and recuperate. It has a dining area serving meals, sleep-over accommodation and is available for quick pop in visits as well.

It’s a surprising find in the busy city and has been a lifesaver for many needing a convenient place to rejuvenate. It’s also the headquarters for a team of qualified ‘masseurs on the move’ travelling to offices and factories to deliver calming relief on neck and shoulder tension. Martina, the owner of the retreat encourages companies to give their staff on-site massage to relieve a busy day. One of the companies they worked with gave all their factory workers an on-site neck and shoulder massage, many of whom had never experienced a massage before. “It’s a much better option than handing out a branded water bottle or something people don’t really need and it’s very affordable when there are a lot of workers all in one place,” says Martina. The mobile team are all experienced masseurs and have a unique massage routine designed for ‘over clothing’ massage. Because it’s often done in a work environment, there are no oils used and no clothing removed. Deep flowing movements work out stress, knots and tension. It’s a highly beneficial wellbeing practice and something everyone should consider doing on a regular basis. It’s also a way to boost immunity and help the body with its recuperative process. Companies that encourage their staff to proactively engage in more wellness practices, show noticeably lower absence rates. We love the idea of a massage that comes right to your doorstep. ure you put your garbage out once a week for collection but who actually thinks about where it goes and how much you generate. It’s phenomenal. Imagine taking a year of garbage bags and keeping them in your house. It would fill your entire house to the brim. Then imagine all the millions of people in your city and the collective amounts of trash we generate. Focusing on radically reducing your trash can make a huge difference to land fills. Here are a few pointers to get you going. 1. BUY LESS We’re encouraged to consume on every level. Advertising lures us into purchasing more and convenience seduces us into ‘on the move’ quick-stop buying. We do it out of habit, yet half the stuff we buy isn’t necessary. Noticing what you buy, and why and then asking yourself if it is really important is the first place to cut down your consumption level. It also saves a huge amount of money. 2. BUY FOOD IN BULK Bulk purchasing allows for getting what you need in a plastic and package-free form. Trace down the suppliers of whatever it is you need. Ask them if you can buy in bulk quantities and fetch it yourself using your own recyclable containers. If you set up a purchasing group, each person in the group can be in charge of a few items. Things like olive oil, honey, stone ground flour, fruit and veggies, chicken and meat can mostly be sourced from suppliers then shared equally with your group. Besides that, it’s cheaper: when you buy things in bulk, you’re not paying for the price of individual packaging. 3. KEEP CONTAINERS ON HAND Many places in Europe and the States offer a discount if you bring your own containers when getting take-out’s. Keep your coffee cup on hand, have some lunch boxes, straws and re-usable carry bags with you whenever you go out. You’ll be amazed at how much trash you can eliminate simply by using your own carriers.

hat does exercise mean today? In an age of intense disciplines like Bikram, Cross Fit, boxing and Sweat1000 classes, one might feel exhausted just naming the discipline. Each decade seems to play host to a different approach, with aerobics and speed walking some of the unwilling stragglers of the past. For perspective’s sake, let’s reminisce about some of the biggest exercise trends of their respective years: 1982 - Jane Fonda; 1988 – Richard Simmons Aerobics; 1990 – Thighmaster and in 1994 – Spinning. Unlike some of the trends, Tai Chi is a form of exercise, pure by design, and forever relevant. Developed by a single family around the late 1600s and derived from a blend of Chinese medicine and martial arts, the discipline only became public when a curious and persistent outsider was invited by the family to learn. From there he went on to develop his own unique style of Tai Chi, one of the four styles practised today. *Each has a unique approach, with the patriarch known as ‘Chen’ style. Chen is made up of both slow and explosive movements, making it one of the more advanced versions. *‘Yang’ is more commonly practised today, and includes slow, steady movements. *‘Wu’ is more minimal and controlled, focusing more on internal strength. *Somewhat similar to ‘Wu’ is ‘Hao’ – which is not practised widely today. *There is also a fifth style – Fusion - that combines elements of each.

The fundamental concept behind Tai Chi is one of balance - an idea that can seem lofty at best in this modern world. Taking cues from the grand master of balance - Mother Nature herself – it is distilled into two opposing but complementary forces - yin and yang. Yin has associations such as the moon, femininity, and the south bank of a river, while yang is associated with masculine energy, the sun and the north bank of a river. For a less obscure demonstration - moving your hand in a circle, up and to the left, creates the potential for it to move down and to the right, for example. Incorporating esoteric concepts such as chi, your vital life force - and mushin, the Chinese word for ‘no mind’, Tai Chi is very much a meditation in motion, where the body moves naturally and autonomously, requiring little input from the conscious mind. It makes a good form of meditation for the restless - those who might struggle to sit and simply focus on breathing for an extended period of time.

Akin to meditation, Tai Chi has therapeutic psychological effects – clarity of thought, relief of stress, improved focus, cognition and concentration, memory and increased self-awareness. Ultimately, being physically fit needs to

If sitting still is not your forte, and cardio-intensive sweatfests not your favourite pastime, it’s possible that Tai Chi may strike a yin and yang inspired balance between the two.

As far as physical perks go, Tai Chi is a generous master. Although not cardio intensive, it covers all the other key points of fitness: muscle strength in the lower and upper body as well as the core muscles of the back and abdomen; flexibility as a result of stretching tendons and ligaments; and finally, balance from fine tuning the sensory neurons in the inner ear to work better with receptors in your muscles and ligaments. Practising Tai Chi also has other positive by-products – improved energy levels, a stronger immune system, better memory and cognitive function and improved coordination. We tried it [ S AT YAG R A H A H O U S E ]

From the very start, walking into Satyagraha House creates an incredible feeling of peace. It seems as though Gandhi left a prevailing spirit of meditative calm and there is an infectious happiness amongst the staff. All of them are completely delightful. You are also likely to bump into the most interesting guests. Our fellow residents consisted of a yoga teacher from New York and two different French families on a first time visit to South Africa. Besides delicious vegetarian fare, they also have meditation and yoga on the menu. The d cor, although fairly minimalistic, has a luxurious feel to it. We were absolutely comfortable and determined to return on a retreat basis. Anyone wanting to write a book, reset their life, overcome a heartbreak or any other considered form of life challenge would do well to tuck their shoes under a Satyagraha bed and immerse themselves in the nurturing simplicity of the surrounds. Mahatma Gandhi’s intriguing life story is written into the tapestry of the buildings. Although he lived there one hundred years ago, he is still very much alive and in the midst. Having arrived in South Africa in 1893 as a young lawyer Gandhi’s experience of apartheid and his determination to create change, left an indelible mark on the history of mankind. Who would have known that Gandhi would lead India to its independence and instigate the world movement of decolonisation. Satyagraha is dedicated to showcasing a slice of his life, Satyagraha meaning truth + force, aligns with Gandhi’s philosophy of passive resistance. The house was built in 1907 by German architect Hermann Kallenbach. Kallenbach became a close friend of Gandhi’s, and in fact ended up leaving a privileged life to follow Gandhi’s path of simplicity and asceticism. The House is now a registered part of South Africa’s historical heritage and offers an innovative accommodation concept linking guesthouse to museum. It was bought by a French travel company Voyageurs du Monde to promote universalism of all the different cultures, religions and people of the world. This objective is clearly achieved in this beautifully run guest house. I would easily recommend an overnight stay at Satyagraha or even better, a lengthy stay for a special kind of recuperation. CHLOE YOGA Bringing a beautiful accessible spirit into the practice of yoga is the spritely and sparkly personality behind Chloe Guiherme. Organised, determined and yet softly yielding Chloe has the perfect sensibility to encourage any aspiring student. Having come from a corporate background, she’s put yoga into an e-book, a retreat, practical online classes and a support function to boot. I recently attended one of her retreats and left with some amazing tips on how to meditate, a handful of nutrition pointers and a huge amount of inspiration. Knowing how busy everyone is, her retreat offered the option of attending the evening class, dinner and moonlight meditation and an overnight stay with a breakfast class. Or one could simply drive through for the morning class. Presenting yoga as a lifestyle, she combined meditation and nutritional aspects that fit snugly with yogic principles. Chloe has a way of drawing her followers into an empowering lifestyle and is a great example of yogic ambassador. She strongly believes in everyday practices to bring transformation of the body, mind and soul. The retreat was offered at the Krystal Beach Hotel in Gordon’s Bay, situated right on the sea front with gorgeous balcony’s leaning over the sea shore. Panoramic views and expansive rooms provided the perfect setting for total relaxation and rest. Tuning into Self Awareness is one of the gifts offered by Chloe and also available in her e-book. *Find a peaceful space where you can be undisturbed *Sit in the middle of your yoga mat with your legs crossed. If that does not work for you stretch your legs out in front of you or sit in a kneeling position with your feet tucked under your buttocks or even a chair. Comfort is key! *Relax your hands onto your knees *Close your eyes *Take deep conscious breaths in and out and allow your mind to become completely focused on your breath. Breathe here until you feel your mind and heart rate begin to slow down. *Bring your awareness to your physical body and explore your body, feeling every limb, every organ, every muscle. Sense your mind merging with your body. Become aware of any aches, pains or tension that may be in the body. *Once you feel you have explored and connected with every particle of the physical body, bring your awareness to your emotional body and become aware of how you are feeling or how you have been feeling recently. Are you happy, angry, sad, excited? Yoga is the practice of self-awareness. *Once you feel you have become aware of your emotional self begin to bring your awareness to your mental self. Become aware of your thoughts and what has been on your mind recently. Become aware of what you are thinking about yourself and the world around you. *Once you feel you have become aware of your thoughts, take a moment to become aware of your soul - that uniqueness that is each one of us. Take time to acknowledge yourself. Welcome yourself to your practice of self-awareness and transformation. *In this space of self-awareness identify what aspects of your physical, mental, emotional or spiritual self you may wish to transform. Things can include anger, stress, stiffness, pain and sadness. Identify things you wish to take on in its place like peace, clarity, joy, fitness, health, flexibility, self-love, self-awareness, abundance, gratitude etc. Hold this intention for transformation with you throughout your practice. *Take a deep breath in and bring your hands into prayer at the heart centre, acknowledging and unifying your body, mind and soul. Come completely into the present moment and acknowledge the miracle of yourself.

hloe Guilhermino experienced a profound transformation and deep healing through her practice of yoga. She shares a bit of her background and demonstrates her favourite pose. Growing up as a dancer and gymnast with religion playing a big role in her life, Chloe had a strong grounding in both movement and spirituality. “When I attended my first yoga class at university, it was as though I had come home. The clarity and peace I felt were unlike anything I had ever experienced before, or even knew was possible.” Chloe’s practice grew over the years, and she experienced an undeniable transformation. “I healed in so many ways, and began to understand the true depth of myself, my existence and the power that I have.” Through this profound transformation, she was inspired to share the practice and train as a kundalini yoga teacher.

MOD IFIED C AT- COW Chloe’s favourite kundalini yoga posture is MODIFIED CAT-COW. Follow these instructions to experience the pose. *Come onto your hands and knees, with your fingers spread out widely. *Make sure your wrists are directly below your shoulders, and your knees directly below your hips. *As you breathe in, lift your head and stretch your left leg out behind you as high as you can. *As you breathe out, contract your body to draw your left knee into your chest and lower your head to bring your forehead to meet your knee. *Breathe in to lift your head back up and lift to stretch the left leg up behind you once again. *As you breathe out, draw the forehead down to meet the chest and draw your left knee into your chest once more. *This can be continued for one to three minutes, and repeated on each side. This posture is truly a full body activator. It brings movement into each vertebrae of the spine, awakening the entire nervous system. It stimulates the digestive system and the heart centre, and releases any tension and stagnant energy within the body, truly activating and energising the body and mind to bring enduring health and happiness.

[ M A N T R A YO G A ] So many different types of yoga are available, Jean-Pierre Rossouw practices a form called mantra yoga, which uses mantras as a self-awakening and meditation enhancing guide alongside his physical yoga practice.

Jean-Pierre first became fully immersed in his practice after snapping the two supporting tendons of his ankle while skateboarding. He firmly believes we are all able to heal ourselves through regular yoga practice. Scorpion pose (vrischikasana) is his favourite demonstration of yoga. S CO R P I O N P O S E . Arm balance and core strength are essential to this dynamic pose which is only suitable for advancing yogis.

When it comes to managing stress and anxiety, there are few things more important than realising that you are not the voice inside your head.

Using a wall for support at first will help connect to the powerful core lift needed to push up from your forearms and not allow the lower back to collapse. Developing strength through practising dolphin, chaturanga dandasana, head or hand stands, kakasana and gorilla all benefit the centred awareness needed for scorpion. Here’s how to do it: *Come up into supported headstand. *Push down on your forearms and make sure your shoulders are away from your ears. *Relax and bend both of your legs. Keep a solid base and let your legs remain light. *Release one hand followed by the other so that both palms are pushing down on your mat. *Slowly start to lift your head and chest. *With time, you will find your balance and be able to judge how far you would like to bring your legs over. Like all inversions, scorpion offers us an alternative way of looking at life. Inversions flush the body of toxic build-up, reversing the circularity flow of the body and increasing blood flow to the head. Scorpion pose focuses the central nervous system, stimulates the endocrine glands and has anti-ageing benefits. It stretches and massages the muscles of the lower back and spine, as well as helping to develop your mental focus.

Pauli’s favourite restorative yoga pose is balasana – CHILD’S POSE. Here’s how to practice it:

[ PAU L I W H I T E YO G A ] Pauli is a creative empath at heart. Her love for nature and movement has always been at the fore of her being. “When I was four, I used to watch National Geographic channel (on my head) for hours. Every other weekend, we would go to our family farm in Mpumalanga, and my sisters and I would walk barefoot in the streams and explore the forest while I would endlessly practise cartwheels and handstands – pure bliss.”

Growing up Pauli always felt a sense of impending doom and it took her years to realise that what she was experiencing was not normal. “I was always reassured by loved ones that it’s just my personality – that I am too shy, too careful, too pessiistic, too introverted – and that if I tried to be more open and optimistic, I would feel better. Yet despite my best efforts, that dreadful feeling didn’t go away.” Pursuing a career in landscape architecture in a digital, corporate world left her feeling demotivated, discouraged and, ironically, extremely isolated from nature. “In my early twenties I fell into my first major depressive episode. Caused by my undiagnosed general panic disorder, this brought me to face one mother of an existential crisis. With panic, anxiety and depression buried in my heart, I did what any millennial would do in such a crisis – I borrowed some money and went off to India to learn yoga.” Yoga taught Pauli to breathe fully and mindfully through the daily practice of pranayama and asana. Learning the tools to calm herself when anxiety creeps in has made a huge difference to her everyday life.

I T E AC H YO G A AT Y O G - an intimate urban sanctuary in Kloof Street, Cape Town that offers hatha and restorative yoga in the company of green goodness, because plants + yoga = happiness! Y o g is lucky enough to share a beautiful studio space at The White Lotus, where you can also practise Pilates and Nia. www.yogstudio.co.za

*Kneel down on the floor and touch your big toes to each other as you sit on your heels. *Once you are comfortable, spread your knees hip-width apart and inhale. *As you exhale, bend forward and lay your torso between your thighs. *Broaden the sacrum across the back of the pelvis, and narrow the points of your hips so that they point towards the naval. *Settle down on the inner thighs. *Stretch the tailbone away from the back of the pelvis as you lift the base of your head slightly away from the back of your neck. *Stretch your arms forward and place them in front of you so that they are in line with your knees. *Release the fronts of your shoulders to the floor. You must feel the weight of the front shoulders pulling the blades widely across your back. *To release the asana, first stretch the front torso. Breathe in and lift from the tailbone while it pushes down into the pelvis. This is a restorative, calming pose that relaxes and rejuvenates the body. It encourages concious breathing and calms both the body and the mind. The stretch in the back relaxes the spinal column. It calms the muscles, helping to alleviate pain - especially in the back, neck and shoulders. The knees are also stretched and relaxed, and the tendons, muscles and joints are healed and made ready for functioning. The pose resembles a fetal position, and is said to provide physical, mental, and emotional solace to the being. This pose truly promotes positive feelings, transporting you back to your childhood days and stripping you of ill feelings and arrogance.

A JOURNEY BACK TO YOU by Kate Aitken

Imagine discovering the art of being authentically You Taking time out of our busy lives to nourish ourselves is a foreign concept for most of us. Anassa is a retreat concept, created by Megan Abbott and Dr Siobhan Dawson designed to inspire and awaken our inner healer. Being privy to their newly launched ‘I am’ luxurious retreat was an experience like no other. This 3-day immersion provided a sanctuary inviting participants to release, re-imagine and re-waken our authentic selves. The magical getaway was hosted at Angala, a 5-star prized boutique hotel in the heart of the Franschhoek Winelands. If you’re looking for a retreat that offers it all- from learning how to manifest your hearts desires, to living at your highest vibration – Anassa is certainly it.

I couldn’t believe my luck when invited by Megan and Siobhan to experience their passion project that culminated in a ‘once in a lifetime’ retreat. Megan is an ex-finance guru turned wellness mentor and Siobhan is a medical psychiatrist and creative visionary. The Anassa co-founders live inspired lives and invited us to give ourselves permission to do the same. The days seemed to fly by, but at the same time, I felt I had been cocooned for an eternity as we eagerly lapped up the shared knowledge and expertise. The first day focused on Re-leasing where we explored letting go of our limiting beliefs with the help of science backed techniques like NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming). Day 2 encouraged us to Re-imagine. Here we used play to reconnect with our inner selves through therapeutic movement and conscious dance. Our final day saw us Re-awaken, with a sunrise walk and healing sound journey. “Every aspect of the retreat is mindfully designed to encourage self -discovery, starting with self-acceptance,” explained Dr Siobhan.

D I D YO U K N OW ? Wabi Sabi is an ancient Japanese art centred around the acceptance of impermanence and imperfection. This philosophy is explained in terms of a broken piece of ceramic. Each crack is ‘fixed’ with a gold, silver or platinum lacquer, celebrating the pieces unique history by emphasising the factures and breaks instead of hiding or disguising them.

During our time at Anassa, we were encouraged to use downtime to fully integrate our experiences. We weren’t short of options as we excitedly jumped from the eco pool to ozone pool to infrared sauna to stream room and back again. Massages were also on offer for those who felt like the extra pampering. Being a total wellness junkie, the food was naturally a big factor. Again, we weren’t short of choices as individual bespoke dietary needs were catered for. Megan is a whole food plant based advocate and is resolute that ‘the power of nutrition in healing can’t be underestimated’. We celebrated delicious, home cooked meals around a big table alongside a wood burning fire place. I left the retreat feeling restored and connected. I felt like I had known the people I had just met, for a lifetime. There something powerful in coming together and supporting each other on our healing journeys. The Anassa spirit has been born and it is destined to touch many. The next retreat is in October, and if you have an inkling to explore You, it’s one you don’t want to miss.

Yoga Retreat

In November 2014, when photographing Roxy for our November issue cover, I would never have guessed nearly four years later I’d be doing sun salutations in a wooden forest cabin with her as my yoga instructor.

Imagine enjoying fire heated yoga in a log cabin, set in the magical Elgin valley

WITH ROXY LOUW

Roxy has endless stamina and is forever evolving her life. From surfer and model to yoga teacher and entrepreneur she brings calm and persistent energy to everything she does. Her first yoga encounter was in Costa Rica with the sports brand Oakley. She fell in love immediately. “It gave me the same mind, body and soul connection I got when surfing,” she explains. Ten years later she went to Thailand and completed her teacher training. Now she has a studio in Durbanville, Cape Town and offers yoga retreats that combine nature, nurture, yoga instruction and a whole lot of fun. This particular one was in the Elgin valley, less than an hour from Cape Town. Cherry Glamping is the most magical place. It’s camping in its most luxurious form. Tents, scattered around the forest are set on wooden platforms and fully equipped with electricity, proper beds, gorgeous linen and Pinterest type d cor. There is a separate large wooden platform perfect for spreading out yoga mats and a cozy cabin with a fire for eating, laughing and communing. Roxy did a combination of meditation, medium paced yoga classes, and mountain walks. There was easy opportunity to opt out or in to any of the activities and ample hammocks to replace the more vigorous options. Food was perfectly balanced between delicious and nutritious and choices for all the free-from preferences. The menu was inspired by Marlien Wright, author of ‘The Yoga Kitchen.’ Marlien made a special trip to give us a talk on nutrition and gut health. Everyone ate their meals together in a long table overlooking the forest and dinner was paired with Deetleefs wine cellars vineyard selection. Conversations were delightfully enhanced by Roxy’s partner Sam. Sam is also a life coach and brings a lovely team spirit and wisdom to those life searching moments that seem to pop up when you combine yoga, forest and fresh air. Look out for more retreats by Roxy and book yourself into a whole lot of fun, some intimate bonding and an opportunity to stretch both your mind and body. Roxy is the founder of GreenLeaf Vitality, a business dedicated to a healthy mind, body and soul. Specialising in yoga and general health and well being, Roxy makes health and wellbeing accessible to everyone by hosting yoga retreats, corporate yoga events, kids and adults yoga classes, work shops as well as surf/yoga retreats.

I love working closely with people, using conversation and touch to help them discover their way of being in the world, and what is and isn’t helpful to their wellbeing and happiness. I give them a better understanding of themselves, how they function in ways that are not constructive, and support them to be more present, mindful, and appropriate in their movement and thinking. This involves the principle of ‘non-doing’ – in fact, Alexander Technique has been described as Zen for our time. I have taught many people over the past 24 years: some are young and others are old, some fit and others not. Some are keen to improve their performance as actors, musicians or singers. Some are martial artists or sportspeople. Others are simply keen to get rid of aches and eliminate the cause. And many come to reduce tension, anxiety or depression. I left a successful legal practice to pursue full-time learning of the Alexander Technique at the Centre for Training in London, where in the three-year training I was taught by many brilliant masters from the UK and the USA. I am a full teaching member of professional bodies in South Africa and the UK, and am committed to their professional codes of ethics. After so many years running a practice on my own, I am now a master in my own right. I visit London two to three times a year as a senior teacher, where inspired young students are training to become teachers. Learning the Technique is not quick, but I make it as easy as possible. I provide a caring hand – providing a mirror to what people are doing that is harmful to themselves. This comes as a revelation to many, who discover greater mastery of their true selves with lightness, ease, comfort, tangible choice and effortlessness.

We are committed to assisting every person we encounter to find greater happiness, depth, width and breadth in their human experience. Under the auspices of Tropic of Freedom Learning and Healing, we offer a safe space in which to heal and rediscover your inner power, spiritual strength and life purpose. We are both experienced practitioners of Tibetan esoteric healing, shamanism, qabalah and hermetic healing. This diverse grounding allows us to help you to remove major blockages and past patterns, whilst at the same time assisting you to create a deep, immovable foundation of inner strength. We also offer esoteric reflexology and traditional nonmedical hypnotherapy when required. Our approach is simple, practical and effective. We believe that all metaphysical learning and true healing happens between the healer and the client, and between the teacher and the student. Expect an active process when working with us. With our combined 35 years of experience we offer a wealth of insight and support for those who are ready to truly embrace living life, or who are ready to receive the assistance they need to finally make the changes required to be free, to fully live, and to love.

ANDREA MILLS I NT EG R I T Y HE A LT H OZO NE T HE R A PY I am a qualified Australian-trained naturopath and nutritional therapist with over 12 years of experience in the health industry. I currently practise as an ozone therapist at Integrity Health, and combine this with my naturopathic knowledge to assist clients with their individual health needs. As I don’t believe knowledge is ever static, I regularly attend seminars and lectures on new developments in natural medicine. I believe that education is key, and that every person is unique and should be empowered to live a healthier, happier life. I offer therapies using an Ozone HOCATT steam sauna, which offers a method of introducing ozone into the body via the skin. Once the ozone enters the body, it penetrates the blood, lymphatic fluid and fat cells, delivering the benefits of ozone in a relaxing treatment. The HOCATT system is unique in that it also has a number of built-in features that not only offer steam, ozone and oxygen, but also provide ultrasonic, electrotherapy, aromatherapy, infra-red and LED light therapy. By combining these, I am able to provide a specific treatment for your condition as well as improve your overall health and wellbeing. This powerful therapy assists the body to heal itself through detoxification, destroying viruses, bacteria, fungi and other pathogens while at the same time increasing cellular oxygenation and stimulating the immune system. Ozone is a naturopathic medicine that has been used in healthcare since the early 1800s. Scientific studies have proven that medical ozone is a safe and effective method of treatment that combines the beneficial oxygenation and detoxification effects of both ozone and steam.
