helping you live life well

E D I TO R ’S N OT E H A P PY & H E A RT F E LT It feels very strange to announce that this is my very last issue as editor of Wellness magazine. Having been present from the start - twelve years ago - before we even opened our first store, Wellness Warehouse has been a part of my life. I remember creating our first mag in September 2011. It’s now seven years and 80 magazines later. As many of you know, I’ve been compiling a resource of natural health practitioners on the platform Holistica. It now requires my full attention so my exit is for a good cause! I’ll be leaving you in the very capable hands of Lara Potgieter. Lara has been writing for Wellness magazine for the past two years and I have absolute assurance she will continue to inform and delight everyone with excellent content. Thank you to everyone who has been supportive of the magazine, especially Carlos and Sean Gomes and for all the amazing feedback I have had over the years. My last issue – our Summer issue, is all about squeezing the juice out of life. That’s great advice when we realise we’re so of privileged to be on this earth, that our time is limited and there’s a particular art to living that yields an enormous amount of happiness. Paying attention to your well-being is a beautiful journey that can be done with great gusto and enjoyment. Our articles are filled with the celebration of being here now. They’re also packed with advice on making choices that support the foundations of living life well. Bask in the delicious sunshine and summer months with our extensive features on health and wellness. Goodbye and thank you all,

Robyn

Giving back to the earth A necessity for Modern Society

We need to stop being part of the problem, and become involved in the solution. Globally, environmental issues are of grave concern. Many governments around the world are taking positive steps to improve air, water and ground pollution, but we can not leave it up to our leaders to effect change. We need to take responsibility, and make decisions with a positive impact on our planet. Using eco-friendly products is one of the very first things we can do to bring about change. It’s a simple shift in the choices we make. Consider that all the water you use for daily household and office cleaning ultimately lands up in local dams or the ocean. It is so important to use products specifically formulated to ensure absolutely no chemicals or toxins leak into our environment. Not to mention our bodies.

‘What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of a difference you want to make.’ Jane Goodall

Single-size servings, without the single use plastic! Introducing our fun, new pocket-sized superfoods in biodegradable packaging CONVENIENCE ON THE GO

KNOWING OUR TRUE COST

Yes, single servings are conveniently packed to go, providing you the perfect quantity you need wherever you are, and now with Soaring Free Superfoods, they are truly waste-less too. Let’s face it, superfoods are the best grab and go snack. They are nutritious, delicious and provide an ideal energy boost any time of day.

That’s why at Soaring Free Superfoods we focus not only on the benefits of our product but also on three vital elements: health, environment & cost consciousness. How much things really cost doesn’t only matter to our pockets today, but to our environment tomorrow, and both are important and need to be in balance. Today’s conscious consumers are real people with real concerns and cares for the world they will leave not only to their children, but 7 generations into the future as well.

Single serving sizes are all the rage, but they come with a dark side – all that single use plastic! Whilst it can be argued that packaging food in this way results in less food wastage, we have to ask at what price to our oceans?

QUALITY

Fact: if you take the impact on the environment into account, not one of the Fortune 500’s most profitable companies would make a cent of profit!

5.2 billion pounds of pesticides are used worldwide every year! Pesticides & GMOs have been linked to a number of health problems, including neurologic and endocrine (hormone) system disorders, birth defects, infertility, cancer, and other diseases.

WASTE-LESS

OUR QUALITY PROMISE

OUR PACKAGING PROMISE

SOARING FREE SUPERFOODS ARE

Why has the world gone plastic-free crazy and why should we care? Because it is predicted that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish! The time is now to change our consumer habits.

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

Certified Organic or Wildcrafted & tested pesticide free

You can compost all our packaging at home! Plastic free Free from toxins and dade from natural fibres Sustainable sourced wood pulp Printed with vegetable based inks Marine degradable

Sustainably and ethically sourced High quality so that you get only the best In 100% home compostable packaging #plasticfree Always packed with love, because that’s our bottom line!

LOOK FOR THIS LOGO, IT MEANS: certified organic ingredients Pesticide & GMO-free: causes no harm to planet environment or people Non-irradiated EU standards compliant with a full audit trail By choosing organic you are not supporting the use of poisons, pesticides and GMOs.

HOW DO YOU COMPOST OUR PACKAGING? Just because it can degrade in the ocean does not mean that it should land in the ocean. In a perfect world it wouldn’t land anywhere near the ocean because it would still take a long time to degrade without heat. It is best to layer the packaging within a heat-producing compost heap. In a functioning compost heap at home it will take about 12-16 weeks to break down completely. Alternatively, as the entire box and inner natureflex bag are made from toxin-free wood pulps and board, you can burn them and use them to start your winter fireplace.

WHAT D O E S L IVIN G L IF E WE L L ME AN TO YO U ? To me, it means finding balance – and that can be tough! Life these days can be so hectic and fast-paced. We often find ourselves doing many different things at once, and because of this we forget to focus on our own wellbeing - what we eat, how we relax and the physical shape we’re in. So, living life well means taking a look at my life and making sure that I’m in the best possible state – both mentally and physically - to do what I need to do. HOW D O YO U STAY IN ME N TAL AN D P HYSIC AL SHAP E ? By being active! Those who know me well will know that I can be a real grouch when I don’t get my exercise in. It’s a way of respecting my body that also works wonders for my mental state. My job as a TV presenter and radio host also requires a lot of energy, and I get much of this from my time spent moving.

The fact that I am comfortable with who I am as a person (particularly in the face of the day-today challenges of high pressure environments); my incredible wife Adrienn (who is always there supporting me and helping me to be the best I can be); and my two adorable gremlins, Kean and Dominic. AURA O F E DE N C AF Aura of Eden Caf is a hidden gem just off the R44 in Stellenbosch with an outrageously delicious menu offering. It’s highly recommended to arrive hungry, as each dish seems more tempting than the last. Think crispy cauli pizza base, with a cashew ‘cheese’ drizzle, spinach, mushrooms, avo, peppers and toasted seeds ...you’ll never want to go back to a normal pizza again. Their quinoa meatballs in curried coconut and turmeric sauce are exceptionally delicious. The Caf is adjacent to Lifeshine – a natural healing clinic and so is fastidious about using the best healing ingredients possible. Founder and Chef Kirsty Meyer has an incredible talent for sourcing ingredients, maximising flavours and a knack for making her food look like art. She’s also highly sensitive to targeting food as a mechanism to fuel each cell of the body with maximum health. Her menu highlights functional food and whether you love flavour or you are eating food as medicine, it’s a perfect destination for anyone on a well-being journey.

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY EATS Feel younger, more energetic and free from pain with an anti-inflammatory way of eating. D I D YO U K N OW ? Inflammation is largely controlled by our lifestyle, food choices and state of mind. They act like highly specialised switches, turning inflammation on or off as appropriate. Specific genes code for specific inflammatory chemicals. Sometimes, for several possible reasons, our switches don’t flip to the off mode fast enough and inflammation persists for longer than needed.

I

nflammation is a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances they produce protect us from infection from foreign organisms like bacteria and viruses. While it’s something that we do occasionally need, the red, hot swelling of inflammation sometimes does not calm down – the immune system paramedics don’t always pack up and leave after they’ve completed their job. Instead, due to low-grade direct or indirect irritation somewhere, they stick around and keep fighting, calling in more immune fighters and generating more heat until eventually all the cellular violence begins to harm perfectly healthy tissue in the surrounding area – be it in fat cells, skin, joints, arteries or organs. One example of this type of unregulated, perpetual inflammation is arthritis. The solution, if it sticks around long enough, can sometimes become the new problem. CO MMO N CO N D I T I ON S D R I V E N BY U N D E RLYIN G IN F L AMMATIO N IN C LUD E: *Heart disease *Obesity *Arthritis *Asthma *Hay fever *Inflammatory bowel disorders *Cancer *Diabetes *Osteoporosis *Depression *Alzheimers and many more Those with a genetic predisposition to chronic inflammation can take early preventative action or manage disease conditions more effectively by making specific changes to their diets.

T H E 5 - D AY GREEN JUICE CHALLENGE It’s all the rage right now, and we tried it to see if there’s good reason why so many people are opting for just juice to optimise health, detoxify and make fundamental changes to their bodies.

FIRST THINGS FIRST If you’re keen to do a juicing detox, it’s vital to prepare your body first. Also be sure to check with your health practitioner if you have any conditions that could be problematic (pregnancy, heart issues, diabetes and so on). Consider what it is you consume on a daily basis and even if you live a fully organic and fresh lifestyle, there may still be some foods or drinks that can give you withdrawals. Caffeine is a huge culprit – people who drink a lot of coffee will experience major headaches, sluggishness and irritability as a result of withdrawal. So, before embarking on a juice detox, reduce (or cut out) caffeine at least a week before. Sugar can also cause withdrawals. Interestingly, if you generally follow a low-carb diet, your body could also react negatively to the flood of simple sugars into your system, which requires you to produce more insulin more quickly. This could result in a drop in blood sugar, making you feel light-headed. T I P : Drink plenty of water as well – without fibre and protein to slow digestion, water is drawn into the digestive tract and this can cause softer, more frequent bowel movements.

26 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S WA R E H O U S E . CO M

STEP BY STEP D A Y O N E : The morning is great, especially if you aren’t much of a breakfast fan. Your body is still full of yesterday’s food and you’re positive it’s all going to be ok. If you normally drink a cup of coffee to wake up, you might feel like you’re missing out, but it’s not that hard. By midday, you feel a bit like the morning has crawled because you’re thinking about all the food you’re missing out on and begin wondering if you can survive not chewing anything for the next five days. By bed-time (likely earlier than usual), you’ll be feeling pretty tired and possibly a bit down. But, to keep you going, it’s about this time that your vital organs are beginning to sit up and take notice that something really good is happening.

D I D YO U K N OW ? Everybody and every body needs a break. Our bodies are fully geared up to constantly get rid of toxins; the skin, liver and kidneys are vital for this process. But, sometimes the body just needs a break. Sometimes what we put into it can be overwhelming, causing the vital organs to work less than optimally. If you regularly experience sluggishness and headaches, or even gut imbalances and conditions like acne and eczema, it’s a sign your body needs some time out. A juice detox ensures a flood of vital nutrients without the need for your body to work at breaking down food to extract them.

D I D YO U K N OW ? Some people who experience a high on the detox may actually be reacting to an undiagnosed food allergy. Be alert to your body’s reaction when you finish the cleanse and revert back to normal eating patterns.

D A Y T W O : This is a good day. Suddenly you have more energy and wake up feeling lighter. That’s because your body didn’t have to use up precious energy to break down food and there is energy to spare. T I P : While you can exercise on the juicing detox, it’s best to tone down your regimen if you are very active. Your body is going through a change and even a bit of a shock, so be gentle with yourself. Ensure that you hydrate well and get plenty of rest. You’ll also probably feel more connected and clear-headed, unless you’re going through caffeine withdrawals. You’ll be surprised, too, that you aren’t hungry and your food fantasies have died down. D A Y T H R E E : Everyone is different and this could be a crash or a high day. The energy from day two may have all but disappeared and you could be feeling pretty grumpy. If so, you’re probably going to consider breaking the rules to nibble on something (anything) that isn’t liquid and green. If you are experiencing a day three high, you’ll feel a bit invincible and may even consider sticking to juice only for the rest of your life – but don’t do it. Most experts agree that five days is the limit. D A Y F O U R : Much like day three, but you’re likely to feel lighter and more energized. You’re on the home stretch and this is a good day to begin planning what you’ll eat to break the fast. Instead of loading up on all the food you’ve missed out on, it’s wiser to ease your body and digestive system back into gear. Plan for raw, organic fruit and veg and slowly get back into your normal diet. D A Y F I V E : Your whole body and soul feels lighter and cleaner. Your skin will probably be softer and you’ll definitely have a glow about you. Now is the time to consider the recipes you’ve used over the five days and plan how you can continue to include at least one juice daily into your diet. You’ve given your body a shot of pure nutrients and the cleansing break it needed, so keep the benefits going by incorporating your favourites into your daily routine.

[ GET JUICING ] Before you begin, it’s important to understand that juicing is different from blending. Juicing doesn’t include the fibrous skins, pips and pulp that blending does. This is to ensure your digestive tract is given the freedom to be well cleansed. What’s also vital to consider is that you need vegetables as well as fruit – too much fruit will mean too much sugar. Remember to stock up before you begin and work the time it will take to prepare your juices into account (peeling, cutting, slicing and cleaning your juicer). The basics will include green apples, celery, kale, mint, cucumber and lemons. Ensure you buy only organic ingredients so your body is getting only the very best nature has to offer.

D I D YO U K N OW ? You’ll only be ingesting around 900 to 1,000 calories daily, quite a bit less than usual. This means that your brain isn’t getting as much glucose as it’s used to and that can make you feel a bit slow and grumpy. A prolonged detox could also disrupt certain neurotransmitters and hormones that rely on protein to control important bodily functions such as your mood and even menstruation.

NATURALLY YOU There are numerous buzz words within the natural beauty realm – from nutraceuticals to botanicals – we guide you on how to ensure you’re doing the very best for your skin and beauty

40 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S WA R E H O U S E . CO M

Founder and Chairman of the Foundation of Innovation Medicine, Stephen DeFelice coined the term nutraceutical in 1989 as an amalgamation of the word ‘nutrition’ and ‘pharmaceutical’. But, the ancients have been doing it for years – using food and nutrition as medicine. When it comes to the word botanical, this relates to a substance obtained from a plant.

It’s not an easy thing to navigate – what you should or shouldn’t put on your skin and into your body. By now, most people understand that organic is best and anything chemical just doesn’t cut it. The beauty industry has definitely jumped on the natural band-wagon, offering numerous nutraceutical and botanical options. But, don’t just take their claims as gospel – always read the labels and understand what it is you are reading. Be aware of claims made on the packaging as well. Generally, if only one ingredient is organic, the product can be pronounced organic – be sure that the product claims to be 100% organic and 100% natural. WA RN IN G L A B E L S There are a number of ingredients you should avoid at all costs, many of which are included in beauty products. Here are some of them: *Most people are now aware that they need to stay away from parabens. However, there’s a newish kid on the block in a similar category – phenoxyethanol has been used as a preservative as a safer option than parabens. That doesn’t mean it’s safe, though – just safer. It is toxic. *Phthalates refers to a group of chemicals used increase the flexibility and softness of plastics. The main phthalates in cosmetics and personal care products are dibutyl phthalate in nail polish, diethyl phthalate in perfumes and lotions, and dimethyl phthalate in hair spray. *Formaldehyde, while seldom listed as an ingredient, can be released through certain preservatives, such as: DMDM hydantoin; Imidazolidinyl urea; Diazolidinyl urea; Quaternium-15; Bronopol; 5-Bromo-5-nitro-1; and Hydroxymethylglycinate. *While it’s unlikely you’ll find the next ingredient in your skin care products, it may be in your nail varnish or hair colourant – toluene also goes by the name benzene, methylbenzene, toluol and phenylmethane. *Triclosan is an antimicrobial chemical that can be found in toothpastes, antibacterial soaps and deodorants. *Propylene glycol can be found in moisturizers, sunscreen, makeup products, conditioners, shampoo and hair sprays. It’s an organic alcohol, but should be avoided.

B E AU T Y

D I D YO U K N OW ? The higher up an ingredient is on the list, the more of that ingredient the product contains? Conversely, the lower it is on the list, the less of it there is. For example, if you buy shampoo that claims to contain Argan oil, but it’s listed below a long range of other ingredients, there probably isn’t enough of it to make a difference to your hair.

Kitchen cosmetics can be highly effective when used on the body, and so can simple flowers and plants. Looking at some of the beauty rituals hailing from Greece, we see ample use of olive oil and honey as well as herbs and some fruits. Greek inhabitants were very in tune with beauty and anti-ageing practices, always looking for ways to improve their appearance. There is evidence of crushed mulberries used for staining cheeks. Clay and flower dyes used as lip colouring and charcoal and oils blended to make eye shadows. Oxen hair was used to increase the thickness of eyebrows or to make unibrows which at some stage were highly fashionable. Honey and olive oil were used extensively in cosmetic and anti-ageing formulas. The wild olive tree was considered sacred, women would oil their entire bodies with olive oil sometimes mixing it with honey. Other oils like almond and sesame when used on the body are also known to have grounding and emotional effects. Almond oil revitalises muscles and nerves. It also has anti-aging qualities and is especially good when mixed with sesame oil. Closer to home we have highly effective ingredients like aloe and lavender, baobab, marula, kalahari melon, moringa, argan and rooibos. One thing about using natural forms of cosmetics is that you can be assured there are no hidden chemicals or preservatives in them.

All about Collagen TAKING COLLAGEN IS KNOWN TO HAVE VARIOUS BENEFITS – HERE ARE JUST FIVE OF THEM. *JOINT PAIN – having enough good quality collagen can ease joint pain and stiffness. *SKIN AGEING – collegen is said to keep ageing at bay, it has a great effect on skin. *MUSCLE BUILDING – the presence of collagen helps build muscle and burn fat in the body. *CELLULITE – by helping the connective tissue in the skin, it can reduce the appearance of cellulite. *DIGESTION – there is a link between digestion and collagen stores, many who have supplemented with collagen report increased digestive health. *HAIR & NAILS – Protein from collagen helps build fingernails, hair and teeth and this could be the difference between resounding health and conditions like splitting nails and hair.

Lately there is so much talk about collagen and it’s benefits for skin and joints, we thought we would unpack exactly what collagen is, where you get it from and why we should be having more of it. Firstly, collagen is he main structural protein found in skin and other connective tissues, you could say it is part of what holds us together. COMPONENTS OF COLLAGEN Protein is all over the body, in bones, tendons and ligaments and 30 percent of these proteins is made up of collagen which in turn is made up of amino acids like glycine, proline, hydroxylproline and arginine. As we age, we produce less collagen and that’s why we get wrinkles. An abundance of collage will keep your skin looking more plump and will also keep your muscles and joints from becoming achy.

B E AU T Y

Certain foods help build collagen or restore collagen that’s been depleted. Here’s a list of some of them. *B O N E B R O T H Bone broth has seen increasing popularity recently and for good reason. It’s filled with collagen and is a powerful way to restore collagen in the skin. Dietary collagen delivers collagen directly to your cells. *R E D G R E E N O R A N G E & B L U E Colourful veggies like green spinach and kale, orange carrots and sweet potatoes, red beets, tomatoes and peppers all have antioxidants that protect against free radicals that break down collagen. All the berries, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries have anti-oxidants in abundance. *G A R L I C Garlic contains lipoic acid and taurine, important components instrumental in building damaged collagen. The sulphur in garlic is a primary part of collagen production. There are many other foods that help boost and sustain collagen stores but simply including these three groups will create a difference.

THINGS TO AVOID If you want to keep collagen levels high the three best things you can do is to avoid sugar. It significantly interferes with collagen’s ability to repair itself. Smoking chemical laden cigarettes is also a biggie and too much time spent in the sun can damage the collagen producing cycle in the body. LEAKY GUT Collagen is active in repairing leaky gut syndrome – the condition where detrimental toxins can pass through your digestive tract. The way collagen works is it soothes your gut lining healing damaged cell walls and infusing them with amino acids. It’s described as ‘sealing and healing’ the protective lining of the gastrointestinal tract. With so many dire conditions resulting from inflammation in the gut it’s an excellent practice to ensure you have the best collagen stores you can get. If you are thinking of taking a collagen supplement, look for the highest quality you can get.

Cape Town professional ballerina Laura B senberg is a principal dancer in the Cape Town City Ballet and the perfect person to inspire a fit and flexible body. Beginning when she was only 4 years of age, Laura took dance classes and would go to the Cape Town Opera House to watch as much dance as she could. This is how her love affair with dance started. Throughout her childhood she had lessons and then after school she enrolled in the University of Cape Town’s School of Dance where she took classical ballet, contemporary dance, African dance, dance notation, music, dance history, pedagogy, choreography, Pilates, and theater skills. Her performances went from strength to strength and she won various awards including the Phyllis Spira Memorial Award and CTCP’s Most Outstanding Female Dancer of the Year in 2008. Laura runs a helpful blog detailing the life of a dancer and tips on how to overcome injuries. 5 BEN EFIT S O F B A L L E T We tend to think of ballet classes as restricted to younger kids wearing tutus but lately there’s been a resurgent interest in adult ballet. Besides the enjoyment factor, here are some of the benefits. 1. ST REN GT H With the all round movement and especially strengthening and lengthening ones, ballet isn’t restricted to just cardio. Barre work creates incredible strength. The more classes you do, the more you feel the effects. Being strong helps your movements become more fluid and also gives you more grace in your everyday movement. 2. EN D UR A N C E Without noticing the effort, ballet takes you through some fairly rigorous cardio routines. Using music and the challenge of mastering the steps, it takes your mind away from the effort and you end up doing more cardio more easily. 3. CO O R D IN AT IO N Focusing on posture, lengthening and accuracy creates improved co ordination. Many of the barre exercises prepare you for the steps and make it easier to co ordinate. Ballet brings you back into your body and allows you a greater body awareness and connection. 4. FLEX IB ILIT Y Stretching is a key part of ballet, from ankles to elbows, almost every part of the body is engaged and stretched allowing greater movement range. 5. P O ST UR E Being based on good posture, it’s a given that the practise lengthens the entire body. Many people agree that it’s easy to spot a ballet dancer by her posture. An improved posture also automatically improves body image, just another reason to do ballet.

MORNING ROUTINE

56 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S WA R E H O U S E . CO M

If the thought of waking up with the birds makes you yawn, taking a advice from the ancients can help you burst into the day with joy and energy.

With today’s always-on culture, it’s not that easy to be in touch with your own self, never mind nature’s rhythms. Artificial lighting, endless entertainment and electronic disruptors make it harder for humans to perceive and understand environmental cues. Certainly sleeping and rising with the sun isn’t even deemed feasible anymore. But that doesn’t mean giving up or giving in. For thousands of years, Ayurvedic wisdom has given humans a way to connect with themselves and the planet, no matter what situation. Dinacharya is an Ayurvedic principle that refers to a daily routine for maintaining physical health, allowing the body to be in tune with the cycles of nature. It helps create balance during the changes that naturally occur throughout the day. TH E P OW ER O F HA B I T “We are what we repeatedly do,” is a quote attributed to Aristotle by American writer, historian, and philosopher Will Durant. Twenty-one days is the generally agreed-to number when it comes to forming a habit – however, science reveals that this may only be if it’s a simple habit, like drinking a glass of water upon waking. If there are more steps to the formation of a habit, it may take longer. But it’s not all about automation – being mindful in your morning practise is also important. That means there will always be an element of discipline that relates to self-nurture. If you are more of a night owl, this practise will take some getting used to, however, it’s not meant to induce stress at bed-time. Sleep experts agree that if you want to change your wake-up time, don’t stress about the going to bed time – rather focus on getting up at the same time each day. As you awake earlier and earlier, you will naturally begin to fall asleep at the best time for your personal requirements.

1. Wake early in the morning, preferably before sunrise. 2. Drink a large glass of warm water, a little lemon will up the benefit. Warm water gently flushes out your whole system and also stimulates peristalsis (a series of wave-like muscle contractions that moves food to different processing stations in the digestive tract). The water purifies the stomach and liver, which stimulates the lymphatic system and the gall bladder. 3. Wash your face and use a tongue scraper to stimulate digestion and elimination. Use cool water or spritz your eyes with rosewater. Governed by the pitta dosha, which is both fire and water, the eyes need to be gently hydrated and awoken. 4. Brush your teeth with natural paste or powder. 5. Evacuate your bowels and bladder, if possible within the first hour of waking – this will become habitual after a while. 6. Exercise for 10-15 minutes (sun salutations are recommended). The body is at its strongest physically (kapha phase) between 6am and 10am, so morning exercise is optimal. 7. Practise breathing for 5-10 minutes 8. Meditate for 5-15 minutes 9. Shower or bath and rinse your mouth with coconut or sesame oil for 10-15 minutes 10. Do a self-massage. This is called abhyanga and has numerous benefits, from softening the skin and nourishing the body to increasing circulation and strengthening the immune system. For cool body types, using warming sesame oil and for warmer body types, use coconut oil. 11. Eat a small amount of breakfast (enough to get you to lunch without needing a snack)

BREATHE IN LIFE Carrying prana (vital life-force) and oxygen, the respiratory system is a network of channels, and in Ayurveda, the lungs and stomach are essential sites of kapha dosha, which is the force in the body governed by water and earth elements. Pranayama is a practice in controlling the breath which cleanses and strengthens the physical body while calming and clearing the mind. Here’s how to do it. *Keep your breath relaxed and light *Using your thumb, close the left nostril and exhale completely through the right. *Inhale fully through the right nostril. *Close right nostril and exhale through the left nostril. *Inhale through left nostril. *Close left nostril and exhale through right nostril. *Repeat this 5-10 times. Get to a point where you can count to four between breaths.

IN VIGO RATE YO UR N ATURAL L IF E F O RC E Ayurveda continues the daily routine by recommending you make lunch the biggest meal of your day, coupled with a power nap on your left side and a light 10-15 minute stroll to aid digestion. At dinner time, eat as early as possible and practice yoga, breathing and meditation before retiring to bed by about 10pm. The practise is simple, but allows you to be in touch with your own body and mind while also honouring and tapping in to natures cycles. By instilling this practise in your daily life, you’ll not only find you’re a morning person, but you’ll regain energy and health.

D I D YO U K N OW ? A sustained meditation practice can support neuroplasticity – the brain’s ability to change, structurally and functionally, on the basis of environmental input. Research has shown that experienced meditators often boast increased cortical thickness and more grey matter in specific parts of the brain.

Meditation is hailed by many as the ultimate ‘medicine for the mind’, with practitioners reporting far-reaching positive effects on their mental and physical health as well as general quality of life. Learn more about incorporating the practice into your life to access the peace and clarity that can only be accessed in the here and now.

Meditation is a mind and body practice with a long history of use for increasing relaxation, improving psychological balance, coping with illness and enhancing overall health and wellbeing. Some of the earliest written records of meditation date back to the Hindu traditions of Vedantism around 1500 BCE. Simple in concept yet requiring practice to master, it most commonly involves turning the attention to a single point of focus – whether that be the breath, bodily sensations, a word or phrase known as a mantra, a specific sense or the simple fact of observing the thoughts that arise. There’s a common misconception that in order to meditate, we need to be able to stop our thoughts entirely. This puts a lot of people off, as it can feel like a near impossible task. The good news is that the practice is actually just about noticing our distracting thoughts without judgment, becoming an objective witness as they unfold, and consciously returning our focus, time and again, to the present moment. In fact, it’s often the case that the harder we try to suppress our thoughts, the louder they become.

It has a daily biorhythm, which means that levels rise and fall throughout the day and night, reaching their highest levels in the evening and falling to their lowest levels in the morning. While things like alcohol and exposure to artificial light can disrupt this rhythm, melatonin supplements can help increase your natural melatonin levels at night. 5-H T P Oficially known as 5-Hydroxytryptophan, 5-HTP is a chemical by-product of the protein building block L-tryptophan. It works in the brain and central nervous system by increasing the production of serotonin, which can affect sleep, appetite, pain sensation and more. VA LER IA N RO OT A herbal remedy that’s popular for its anti-anxiety and sedative effects, valerian increases the levels of the neurochemical GABA in our bodies. Healthy GABA levels promote restful sleep by ensuring we spend enough time in both slow-wave and REM sleep. L-T H EA N IN E An amino acid found in tea leaves, l-theanine promotes relaxation and facilitates sleep by boosting GABA, lowering ‘excitatory’ brain chemicals and enhancing alpha brain waves. CB D Cannabidiol (aka CBD) is the non-psychoactive derivative of the cannabis plant that comes from its stalks and stems. It’s what’s most commonly used in medical marijuana products, and has been lauded for centuries as a sleep aid, pain reducer and anxiety reliever. MAGN ES IUM One of the major side effects of low magnesium is disrupted sleep. Stress can cause your magnesium levels to drop, which in turn causes a decrease in the production of brain chemicals like melatonin. Magnesium also plays a role in supporting deep, restorative sleep by maintaining healthy GABA levels.

Seeing a chiropractor can help alleviate the back and neck pain that may be keeping you from sleep, as well as improve relaxation and blood flow. ME DITATIO N A 2015 study by Harvard Medical School shows that meditation can be a powerful solution to insomnia and other sleep disorders. Research suggests that people who meditate produce far more alpha, theta and delta brainwaves (which boost deep relaxation and sleep), and fewer insomnia-causing, attention-inducing beta brainwaves. According to a study by the University of Massachusetts Medical Centre’s Stress Reduction and Relaxation Programme, people who meditate have considerably higher melatonin levels than those who don’t. E X E RC ISE There’s a substantial body of scientific evidence that exercise helps improve sleep. Not only does it reduce stress and tire you out, exercise in the early morning and afternoon may also help reset the sleep wake cycle by raising body temperature slightly and then allowing it to drop and trigger sleepiness a few hours later. Exercising outdoors and letting your body absorb natural sunlight during the daytime hours can be particularly helpful. P HOTOTHE RAPY Phototherapy is a type of light therapy that is particularly effective for people who have a difficult time falling asleep until much later than they wish. It involves sitting in front of a specially designed light box for 30 to 40 minutes at a specific time each day, which helps to realign the body’s internal sleep clock. If done in the morning, it can help you fall asleep earlier in the evening. C HRO N OTHE RAPY Chronotherapy works by intentionally delaying your bedtime by periods of two to three hours on successive days until you’re able to fall asleep at the desired time. It can be difficult to do at home, and sometimes involves having to take a few days off from work or studies to accommodate the changing sleep pattern. After reaching the desired bedtime, you need to be strict about the new schedule for it to remain consistent. UN P L UGGIN G Studies have shown that people who use iPads, eReaders and other backlit devices before bed produce 55% less melatonin than those who read a paperback in dim light. It is generally recommended that you turn your devices off at least 30 minutes before going to bed. Some experts even recommend unplugging two hours before bedtime. CHILLED OUT CHILDREN by Lara Potgieter

Mindfulness is becoming common practice in schools across the globe, with studies reporting reduced stress and enhanced mental performance as a result. Over 5 000 UK teachers have been trained in the teaching of mindfulness, and 2017 saw the roll-out of a mindfulness curriculum in numerous schools across the US. There is no doubt this approach can benefit South African children, too – particularly in light of the unique set of challenges with which many are faced, both at school and at home.

68 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S WA R E H O U S E . CO M

Mindfulness is a calm state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment while gently acknowledging and accepting one’s thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations without judgment. Many children in South Africa are born into harsh conditions such as poverty, domestic violence and poor quality schooling. With over two million orphaned and vulnerable children in the country, immediate intervention is needed to provide the youth of today with healthy coping mechanisms for a better start in life. We speak to Carol Surya - psychologist and co-founder of NGO WISE (Wellbeing in Schools & Education) - about how she’s working to empower children through mindfulness. WW: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE WISE? C S : Too often we see vulnerable children in challenging circumstances resort to negative coping behaviours like violence, bullying, alcohol and drug abuse, and even suicide in response to their situations. The suicide rate for South African 10- to 14-year-olds has more than doubled in the past 15 years. We continue to place importance on teaching Maths and English in schools, when children would surely benefit from resources that can equip them with self-esteem, self-sufficiency and self-love that can contribute to their overall wellbeing. WW: WHAT IS THE MAIN AIM OF THE NGO? C S : WISE offers educators and caregivers in underprivileged schools and communities practical training in wellness-based programmes, as well as unique materials for teaching children essential life skills like emotional intelligence, non-violent communication, forgiveness, gratitude and mindfulness. WW: WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND IN THE FIELD OF CHILDREN’S WELLBEING? C S : I’ve been involved in stress management training for over 20 years, and am the author of two parenting books - Great Kids and Parent Magic. In 2017 I partnered with Biodanza facilitator, sculptor and entrepreneur Carmen Clews to develop the pilot study and training programme for WISE in the Western Cape. For 12 years prior to that, we had been independently developing our own materials for children’s wellbeing, including my Inner Magic self-esteem children’s game and Carmen’s The Magic Mat and Planting Seeds for Life books. Unfortunately, there is a desperate shortage of professionals, resources and wellness materials to assist children (especially those who have been neglected or otherwise marginalised), and we saw the opportunity to combine our skills and materials to introduce a holistic training programme aimed at parents, educators and caregivers.

TIPS ON PRACTISING MINDFULNESS WITH CHILDREN AT HOME: *R E C H A R G E T O G E T H E R Before starting homework or eating dinner, lie down on your backs with your feet up on a chair and close your eyes to ‘recharge’ for a few minutes. You could play calming music or chat about the best part of your day. To come out of the relaxation, bring your knees towards your chest, roll over and wait a few seconds before slowly sitting up. *T A K E A B R E A T H E R Stop what you or the kids are doing and just take a few moments to breathe slowly and deeply. Conscious breathing is an immediate way to trigger the parasympathetic part of the nervous system, which brings about an immediate feeling of calm. *P R A C T I S E A T I M E - I N Get your kids used to a daily practice of ‘time-in’, where they tune into their inner worlds. You can do this with them by gently focusing your attention on your breath, following the cool air in and the warmer air out through the nostrils. Another great way is simply to put one hand on your heart and the other on your belly, close your eyes and become aware of your heartbeat. *I M A G I N E A S A F E P L A C E Encourage your children to create a beautiful safe place in their imaginations. Once picturing all the colours, sights, sounds and smells in this place, they can imagine being there themselves and using this visualisation to feel calm and peaceful. It’s great to get them to invite a ‘magical helper’ or friend who can inspire and motivate them in the face of any challenges.

WW: YOU’RE CURRENTLY PILOTING YOUR WELLNESS TOOLS IN A VARIETY OF SCHOOLS, YOUTH CENTRES AND ESTABLISHMENTS ACROSS THE WESTERN CAPE. WHAT HAS THE RESPONSE BEEN LIKE SO FAR? C S : The response to the pilot study has been overwhelmingly positive. Delegates completed both the Staff Personal Wellbeing programme (an in-depth experiential training, homework and follow-up over eight weeks), as well as the Children’s Wellbeing programme (covering the teaching and implementation of the practical tools to kids). These educators reported significant reductions in their own stress levels, alongside a significant positive difference in the children’s behaviour. They reported decreased absenteeism, reduced high-risk behaviour and reduced incidents of aggression in the classroom. WW: YOU MENTION A FOCUS ON WELLBEING FOR THE EDUCATORS THEMSELVES. WERE YOUR PROGRAMMES DEVELOPED TO HELP ADULTS, TOO? C S : The WISE philosophy is based on the principal of unlocking children’s potential through the skillful nurturing and educating of their caregivers. In recognising the role that adults play in teaching children how to deal with overwhelming feelings or managing challenges, we realised that too few adults are themselves healthy or well-adjusted. The WISE programme has been developed specifically to aid teachers and caregivers in dealing with their own stress first so that they are better able to help learners cope with their own challenges.

WW: WHAT’S IN STORE FOR WISE FROM HERE? C S : The training programme has been implemented with educators from a few previously disadvantaged schools in the Garden Route plus NGOs including Knysna FAMSA, Bodisa, Knysna Drug and Alcohol Centre, The Department of Health (Garden Route) and Sinemethemba Child and Youth Centre. Depending on the funds raised, we aim to roll the programme out nationally. We’d also like to design and implement a comprehensive six-month WISE volunteer training program in 2019 so that students interested in social service as well as members of the public can receive training and help us spread the work in as many schools as possible. WW: HOW CAN OUR READERS LEARN MORE ABOUT TEACHING MINDFULNESS AND WELLBEING PRACTICES TO THE CHILDREN IN THEIR LIVES? C S : We offer parenting workshops for developing self-esteem and wellbeing in children. We’ve also developed psychology-based resources that readers can use with little ones anywhere. These include The Magic Mat and its Little Secret yoga book and DVD, the Inner Magic self-esteem game, and the Planting Seeds for Life life skills book aimed at children between 10- and 14-years-old. WW: WHERE CAN WE CONNECT AND FOLLOW YOUR WORK? C S : Visit our website at www.raisingkidspositively. com/wise/, follow us on Facebook at @WellbeingInSchoolsAndEducation and Instagram at @raisingkidspositively, e-mail us at info@raisingkidspositively.com or give us a call on 044 533 5655.

Oxford graduate, Mandela-Rhodes scholar and one of the Mail & Guardian’s Top 200 Young South Africans, Rekgotsofetse Chikane offers a first-hand account of the university protests that gripped South Africa between 2015 and 2017. An advocate for socio-economic equality and the practical realisation of decoloniality, Chikane explores the political dynamics that lead to the #MustFall movements, taking a particular interest in the difference between student politics today and the youth upeavels of South Africa’s past. The provocative question he poses throughout is whether the so-called ‘coconuts’ – members of today’s black elite – can indeed be trusted with this kind of revolution.

NUTRI LA VIE

I am an integrative body practitioner combining 18 years of international physiotherapy experience with therapeutic yoga, myofascial release and interoceptive body awareness. My approach is for people living with illness, injury or disability, as well as those simply wanting to optimise their mental and physical health.

I opened Inner Peace Healing in 2010, after 22 years in the corporate world. My work involves restoring a sense of inner peace for my clients – helping them to identify and move through the places they are stuck so they can return to the flow of life with an open heart.

Over the past 20 years, we have developed a passion for health and wellbeing that has led us to establish Nutri la Vie (Nutrition for Life) – an integrative nutrition health coaching service.

One of my primary modalities is energy healing. During an energy work session, I feel into the energy body and field at a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level to sense and find the areas of disquiet, unsettled energy and stuckness. I then work to clear these so my clients leave their sessions feeling lighter and more ready to embrace life.

Whether you’re trying to manage a health condition, ease digestive discomfort, resolve weight issues or simply create healthy new habits, we’ll support you with holistic guidelines to apply both on and off the plate. The role of a coach is not to dictate a diet or lifestyle to you, but rather to work with you to co-create your health goals with actionable objectives within reasonable time frames.

The aim of Healing Space Cape Town is to provide a safe space for anyone experiencing dis-ease in any form to explore their bodies through interoceptive awareness - the ability to sense what is going on inside the body. I guide people to tune into their bodies and allow them to return to their natural state of wellbeing, ease and homeostasis. I believe deeply that no health issue or trauma is meant to disempower us or lead us to a life less joyful or fulfilling. These experiences provide opportunities for us to stop and take notice - to increase our awareness and tune into ourselves on levels that we may not otherwise have accessed. This kind of internal bodywork creates the sense of trust and safety that we desire but often attempt to get from external sources. My own health challenges have motivated me to help others in this way. I have a genetic degenerative retinal disorder that was diagnosed at age six, and my vision impairment set me on a pilgrimage of self-discovery and healing. Through the healing therapies I’ve explored for myself, I’ve learnt how to tune into my body, and in so doing have maintained my eyesight and function beyond medical expectation. I am living proof of the benefits of the work I now share with others. Therapeutic yoga, myofascial release and interoceptive body awareness are therapies that relax and cleanse the body, promote powerful insight, unblock stuck energy and balance on all levels through positive shifts. This integrated bodywork can be done by anyone, and is greatly beneficial for those with cancer, chronic illness, neurological disorders, stress and anxiety or depression. Crystal surgery is a cornerstone of the process, as the frequencies of the crystals - when used as tools in specific protocols - are potent clearers of energy and transmitters of healing vibrations. I also use muscle testing from transformational kinesiology, as it’s useful for helping clients see how their conscious and unconscious stories are impacting them. We then work to replace these limiting beliefs with affirming statements. Intuitive readings, past lives, reiki, hypnosis, soul retrieval and shamanic drum journeys are among some of the other modalities that weave their way into the session to support the healing process. Sometimes we remain stuck despite doing much work on ourselves. This is where we need to look beyond the self and into the family system. I use family constellations to help reveal and release relational entanglements that could be holding my clients in detrimental patterns or states. I also offer kundalini yoga classes on Tuesday mornings, monthly meditations alongside the river and annual shamanic munay ki cleansing journeys. As graduates of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York, we have learnt a range of innovative coaching methods, practical lifestyle management techniques and over 100 dietary theories – from Ayurvedic, raw and vegan to gluten-free, paleo, macrobiotics and everything in between. We also work within the corporate environment, offering employee health coaching, executive coaching, assistance with company health goals and practices, and leadership and strategy guidance. THE WILD LOVE I founded The Wild Love in 2017 as an opportunity for women to come together for sincere connection, empowerment and fun. I have always felt a deep connection to the Earth and all her creatures. After completing my studies as an interior designer, I headed for the bush to become a field guide. Today, I am blessed enough to be able to share my insight into nature’s bounty, herbalism, wild food foraging, farm-to-table cooking and the natural movement at The Wild Love. The Wild Love retreat centre is located on a picturesque farm in Tulbagh, and surrounded by majestic mountains. Our down-to-earth women’s empowerment programmes are about connecting to nature, ourselves and each other. We use re-wilding and traditional life skills, natural movement and yoga as well as selfdevelopment workshops to bring out the inner wild woman. To re-wild means to restore ancestral ways of living that create greater health and wellbeing for humans and the ecosystems that we belong to. Learn to communicate with nature at a deeper level and discover a new sense of peace and adventure through meditation, elemental yoga, primal movement and natural immersion. The interconnectedness of women and nature is woven into The Wild Love retreats, where we explore wild food foraging, honouring the phases of the moon in ceremony and embracing the cycles of the seasons. Learn about wilderness living skills, folk medicine and ancestral rituals like sweat lodges, cacao and red tent ceremonies, earthing and hiking. Nourishment is an important part of The Wild Love experience, and this includes not only a vibrant diet but also sincere human connection. We serve organic meals created with love and packed with superfoods, providing the nutrients needed to energise and revitalise from the inside out. On a more subtle level, we facilitate the finding of nourishment through connections and quality time spent with likeminded women.
