The most acutely dangerous cleaning products are corrosive drain cleaners, oven cleaners, and acidic toilet bowl cleaners. EWG Rated F (highest hazard rating): Ajax, Charlie's Soap, Clorox, CVS, Fabuloso, Green Works, Lysol, Mr. Clean, Pledge, Safeway, Scrubbing Bubbles, Simple Green, Soft Scrub, SOS, Swiffer, Tilex, Trader Joe's, Up & Up, Wal Mart, Windex  In 2000, cleaning products were responsible for nearly 10% of all toxic exposures reported to U.S. Poison Control Centers, accounting for 206,636 calls.  Of these, 120,434 exposures involved children under six, who can swallow or spill cleaners stored or left open inside the home.  Cleaning ingredients vary in the type of health hazard they pose. Some cause acute, or immediate, hazards such as skin or respiratory irritation, watery eyes, or chemical burns, while others are associated with chronic, or long-term, effects such as cancer.

 Fragrances added to many cleaners may cause acute effects such as respiratory irritation, headache, sneezing, and watery eyes in sensitive individuals or allergy and asthma sufferers.  One- third of the substances used in the fragrance industry are toxic. Chemicals that are so-called “hormone disruptors” can interfere with the body’s natural chemical messages, either by blocking or mimicking the actions of hormones causing decreased sperm counts, increased rates of male birth defects. Possible health effects include decreased sperm counts, increased rates of male birth defects such as cryptorchidism (undescended testicles) and hypospadias (where the urethra is on the underside of the penis), and increased rates of some kinds of cancers. The alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs) used in some detergents and cleaners have been shown to mimic the hormone estrogen; one APE, p-nonylphenol, has caused estrogensensitive breast cancer cells to multiply in a test tube study.” IT’S TIME TO SWITCH TO PLANT-BASED, OIL-INFUSED PRODUCTS!

Sometimes our pans take the brunt of our cooking. Burnt on gunk can make pots and pans look old and dirty. Don’t throw them away! Here’s an easy hack to get the residue off your cookware and looking sparkling new again. Use it on your dirty stovetop too!

Ingredients • 1/4 cup baking soda • 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide (3% solution) • 10 drops Orange, Tangerine, or Grapefruit essential oil • wash cloth • cleaning gloves Directions Put on your gloves Mix the baking soda, peroxide, and essential oil in a glass or stainless steel bowl. Mix to form a paste. You can add a little more baking soda if you need to thicken it a bit. Apply the paste to your baking sheet. Use the wash cloth to press the paste into the grimy or crusty places of the pan. Use circular motions to scrub away the residue. Reapply paste as needed. Wipe away excess paste and rinse in cold running water. Your clean, non-sticky pans are now ready to use! Safety Tip I would strongly recommend using gloves to protect your hands during this process. The peroxide can “bleach” your skin and the citrus essential oils can cause photosensitivity. Wear your rubber gloves to avoid any skin issues.

Commercial Oven Cleaners make the Top Ten list of the most harmful chemicals we use in our homes. And, it is impossible to wash all of the residue off your oven walls so when you are baking those delish banana muffins, they are being infused with leftover toxic fumes.

Even if you have a self-cleaning oven, you still have to clean up the burnt ash.

Natural Oven Cleaner Ingredients 3/4 cup baking soda 15 drops Orange Essential Oil (if especially greasy, add Lemon EO too) 15 drops Pine Essential Oil 10 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil 3 – 5 tablespoons water Directions Make sure that your oven is completely cool before beginning. In a small bowl, add baking soda and essential oils. Stir in 3 tablespoons of water. Stir until well mixed and a thick paste is formed. If there is any baking soda still dry and clumpy, you can add a few more teaspoons of water at a time while stirring. Use a damp sponge or cloth to apply the paste over the oven area. Let this sit for 5 minutes. Using the same sponge, gently scrub the paste in a circular motion. You’ll probably want to rinse your cloth often to get rid of any residue or baked-on grease as it comes off. When all the baked-on dirt is out, use a clean, damp cloth to do a final wipe removing any paste from corners and edges where it might have gotten trapped.

Now those Banana Muffins will be as healthy as your oven.

DISH SOAP INGREDIENTS Have you ever looked at the ingredients in your dish soap? If you have, you may have seen these ingredients: •Ammonium C12-15 Pareth Sulfate: Evidence of chronic aquatic toxicity; damage to DNA; respiratory effects •Lauramidopropylamine Oxide: Evidence of respiratory effects; skin irritation/allergies/damage; damage to vision •DMDM Hydantoin (also known as formaldehyde): Evidence of cancer; skin irritation/allergies/damage; general systemic/organ effects •Sodium Bisulfate: Evidence of damage to vision •Methylchloroisothiazolinone: Evidence of acute aquatic toxicity; skin irritation/allergies/damage

These side effects raise lots of red flags. When we are exposed to harmful ingredients over the course of many years, it can cause serious wear and tear on our bodies. (Compound Effect)

This easy DIY takes less than an hour, including cleanup! It’s all natural and completely safe for the environment, and the fresheners will make your disposal smell as fresh and clean as a meadow of daisies!

Natural Disposal Freshener Supplies: 1 cup baking soda ½ cup salt ¾ cup liquid Castile soap 30 drops essential oil (Lemon and Purification work great) ¼ cup water Measuring spoon (we used a tablespoon)

Directions: 1. Combine baking soda and salt in a bowl. 2. Add Castile soap and essential oils. 3. Add water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the mixture reaches the texture of wet sand. YL tip: If you add too much water, the mixture won’t pack together or dry properly. Add more baking soda and salt to get the texture of wet sand. 4. Pack the mixture into the measuring spoon. YL tip: To get your freshener out of the measuring spoon, tap the spoon lightly on the counter until the contents slide out. Be careful! The mixture hasn’t dried yet, so it might be fragile. 5. Let the fresheners dry for about 24 hours. 6. Store in a sealed glass jar, and keep dry. To use: Put 1-3 fresheners in your garbage disposal. Turn the faucet on a steady cold stream, and run the disposal for up to one minute.

1 cup of ice, ¼ cup water Add 2 drops of Thieves, 2 drops of Lemon, and 2 drops of Purification Pour in, push through and turn the garbage disposal on for 30 seconds to a minute.

Four tips for keeping your garbage disposal fresh: •Run it often, even when there’s nothing in it, to keep all its parts moving. •Always use cold water—hot water can melt grease, which causes clogs. •Avoid putting certain things down there, like grease, bones, large fruit pits, and foods that expand when wet, like rice or pasta. (Throw these in your compost bin that you just sprayed with the combo above.) •Grind small pieces of food thoroughly by running the disposal for longer than you think—a few seconds doesn’t cut it.

Make a compress for recent boo boos. • Add about 5 drops of your chosen essential oil to 1 cup of warm water. (You can mix several essential oils together if you like.) • After shaking the oil with water, soak a clean cloth and apply. • Repeat until the water for the compress is gone. • Continue making compresses and applying daily until the boo boo feels better. (You can also make a lotion by power mixing solid coconut oil and oils and apply throughout the day.)
