or as long as he can remember, Ryan Peterson has been refilling coffee and bussing tables at the Apple Cup Cafe. His mother, Dian Prentice, owned the cafe for 19 years, and Peterson and his wife Erin bought it from her six years ago. A 2005 Chelan High School graduate, Peterson was longing to move back to his hometown. He had always liked working in restaurants, and he wanted to continue his family heritage at Apple Cup Cafe. Prentice, for her part, was ready to retire. The plan had been to ease the Petersons into the work gradually while Prentice continued on board for an extra year. It didn’t end up working out like that, though. The Petersons jumped into the job, and Ryan Peterson said it felt pretty natural. The Apple Cup has been in business since 1957 and it is an important local gathering place with a homestyle feel. Those are things that Peterson doesn’t ever want to change. “We’ve always wanted to make it feel like you’re walking into home,” he said.

planning to list? in uncertain times, go with a real estate professional you can trust. The Apple Cup Cafe Cobb Salad is loaded with healthy goodies.
Since purchasing the restaurant, the Petersons have started their own family. Their daughter Madeline is three and they have a son coming next month. Peterson said he envisions his kids also helping around the restaurant as they grow older. When restaurants were closed this spring due to the pandemic, the Petersons took the chance to renovate, adding more prep space in the kitchen, as well as new flooring, varnishing of the knotty pine interior and refinishing the iconic sign, which has adorned the restaurant since the 1950s. One of the impetus behind the kitchen renovation has been to add more prep space, so that the restaurant can offer more homemade items. They have started that trend this year with fresh squeezed orange juice and homemade lemonade. Next year they plan to add grapefruit and pomegranate juice. Not only have the Petersons kept the homelike, local feel of the Apple Cup Cafe, they have also kept the tradition of helping the local community. For 25 years the Apple Cup Cafe has offered a Thanksgiving dinner by donation, which usually serves between 1,000 and 1,500 people. All proceeds are donated to the Chelan Food Bank. In a typical year this amounts to about $2,000. Peterson said that he can’t yet be sure if the cafe will be able to host the dinner this year, but he said they really want to try. The Cafe also takes part in fundraisers put on by the school, the fire department, veterans organizations and the Chamber of Commerce.
The Apple Cup Cafe Bloody Mary is one of the drinks on the menu.
Ryan, Erin and Madeline Peterson are pictured in front of the cafe along with a Thanksgiving friend at the 2018 Thanksgiving Day community feed.
“We feel very tied to Chelan,” Peterson said. The Apple Cup Cafe, located at 804 E. Woodin Ave., is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day of the week. The menu includes a variety of traditional choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

BOOKS & FARMERS MARKETS
by Benjamin Alire Sáenz
This Printz Honor Book is a “tender, honest explora-
tion of identity” (Publishers Weekly) that distills lyrical truths about family and friendship. Aristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendship—the kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. And it is through this friendship that Ari and Dante will learn the most important truths about themselves and the kind of people they want to be.

They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera
Adam Silvera reminds us that there’s no life without death and
no love without loss in this devastating yet uplifting story about two people whose lives change over the course of one unforgettable day. On September 5, a little after midnight, Death-Cast calls Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio to give them some bad news: They’re going to die today. Mateo and Rufus are total strangers, but, for different reasons, they’re both looking to make a new friend on their End Day. The good news: There’s an app for that. It’s called the Last Friend, and through it, Rufus and Mateo are about to meet up for one last great adventure—to live a lifetime in a single day. In the tradition of Before I Fall and If I Stay, They Both Die at the End is a tour de force from acclaimed author Adam Silvera, whose debut, More Happy Than Not, the New York Times called “profound.” Featuring a map of the novel’s characters and their connections, an exclusive essay by the author, and a behind-the-scenes look at the early outlines for this critically acclaimed bestseller.

The Song of Achilles
by Madeline Miller
“Mary Renault lives again!” declares Emma Donoghue, author of Room, referring to The Song of Achilles, Madeline Miller’s thrilling, profoundly moving, and utterly unique retelling of the legend of Achilles and the Trojan War. A tale of gods, kings, immortal fame, and the human heart, The Song of Achilles is a dazzling literary feat that brilliantly reimagines Homer’s enduring masterwork, The Iliad. An actionpacked adventure, an epic love story, a marvelously conceived and executed page-turner, Miller’s monumental debut novel has already earned resounding acclaim from some of contemporary fiction’s brightest lights—and fans of Mary Renault, Bernard Cornwell, Steven Pressfield, and Colleen McCullough’s Masters of Rome series will delight in this unforgettable journey back to ancient Greece in the Age of Heroes.

Brock, Layla, Reese and Erica Lindsay work at the Succession Vineyard.
S
ix years ago Brock and Erica Lindsay lost their car in an accident, their home in the Carlton Complex Fire and Brock’s job due to his company folding. They also welcomed their first child, Layla, into the world. They chose to run with the concept of new life, rather than the despair of loss. A long time love for wine and winemaking was transformed into a new career path and direction for this thirtysome couple. A name was born that reflected this new direction out of pain and loss. Searching for that elusive right name, Erica, who worked for Hewlett Packard in marketing, sales and branding, Googled the term for how an ecology rebuilds after a fire. “Ecological succession” seemed like an idea that encompassed their beginning, and they
chose the title “Succession Wines.” “We thought it was a name we could build behind,” Brock said. Erica got out a napkin and drew a logo and they had their start. By 2016 they had purchased property for a production facility and tasting room and sold 600 cases of wine from the back of a truck in their brush-filled lot, while at the same time breaking ground for the tasting room. The next year 1400 cases sold out, and this has increased year by year until they are selling 4000 this year and plan to produce 6000 in the spring. Succession Wines are 100 percent straight varietals, blended from grapes that come from different sources and have different characteristics. Pateros, good wine is all about good grapes. Grapes of each variety are chosen carefully from those grown at Antoine Creek as well as from other Central Washington Vineyards. Each lot is hand selected and then kept separate from the day it is picked until it is blended at bottling time. Succession Wines is currently managing 39 different press dates. So, what is the advantage of a 100 percent straight varietal wine? “It keeps every wine unique,” Lindsay said. “They are the true expression of the varietal.” Lindsay said that he is consistently in the field searching for vineyards that are producing grapes of a unique flavor and superior quality to make up the overall portfolio of Succession Wines.
“We firmly believe we have one of the better vineyard books in the state,” Lindsay said. Soon they will be adding some of their own grapes to the mix. They have a few acres of Syrah on the production facility and tasting room land. They are soon scheduled to close on 20 acres not far away, which will also be planted in vineyards. Six years after their change in course, the Lindsays couldn’t be happier with the move they made. Brock Lindsay said they feel very fortunate to be able to spend their careers making and selling excellent wine. In addition to getting to pursue their passion, one of the great perks is flexibility and family time. Erica gets to stay home full time with Layla, now 6, and her younger sister Reese, 4. She also serves as chief advisor, and Brock often calls her during the day for input. The girls are frequently at the production facility and tasting room running around outdoors and helping out. For example, as crush season is underway they are participating in the foot stomping work. Brock, though he works as hard as ever, has much more flexibility in his schedule. He enjoys having breakfast and lunch with the family and seeing his girls during the day. Describing his new way of life, Brock said, “I don’t think there’s anything better.” Succession Wines, located at 78 Swartout Road in Manson, is open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
