Top & Bottom: Spirals employee Jen Phillips teaches younger customers how to use Tibetan singing bowls.

pirals owner BeverLi Joi and her employees spend a good deal of their time in the store teaching customers about their products and how they fit into the overall picture of health and wellness. For some, products like precious stones, singing bowls, statues and meditative instruments are just attractive decorative pieces. But many are interested in learning how to use these items to find more inner strength and peace. Spirals offers a stone labyrinth in the shop which is a meditative walk that allows one to set a personal intention. BeverLi and employees guide guests in an exercise which involves ringing a gong, walking the counter-clockwise spiral and coming out again with renewed power toward their desires. “It’s an experiential shop,” BeverLi said. This hands-on shop is for people of all ages. When parents with young children come in they are often anxious as their kids hover around and finger fragile items. Spirals staff members enjoy participating in enjoyable activities with the children such as teaching them to play Tibetan singing bowls and walking the labyrinth. They quickly become peacefully engaged. Not only is education a critical part of the retail items in the store, classes and private sessions are an important aspect of the business as well.

planning to list? in uncertain times, go with a real estate professional you can trust.

Like other items in the store, crystal bowls can be an attractive home decoration or something in which one finds a deeper meaning.

A visit to Spirals is a hands-on experience.

Spirals normally offers yoga, exercise classes and a range of classes on topics related to inner energy. These classes are on hold due to the pandemic, but one-on-one sessions of Healing Touch, Reiki, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Hypnotherapy, Sound baths and other alternative healing methods continue. Asked if there is a specific spiritual underpinning to her work with Spirals, BeverLi said that the work draws from a range of faiths, but is not bound to any one tradition. She gave the example of the Tibetan singing bowls, which stem from Tibetan Buddhism. “You can play a bowl and go to a quiet place in the mind and heart without having a connection to Buddha,” she said. From gift items to books to learning sessions, the overall goal is to help the individual connect with inner energy and become his or her best self. BeverLi said that this can be the answer for helping people to resolve physical or emotional well-being. “It’s healing from the inside out,” BeverLi said.

Spirals employee Cherry Fisher sits among concrete animals.

This approach can be integrated with Western medicine, she said. Sometimes, BeverLi and her team find the need to refer people to medical doctors, and sometimes doctors refer people to Spirals when they recognize that stress is playing a key role in a person’s life. BeverLi said that during the pandemic she has especially found that many people are struggling. The mission of Spirals is to be “a light on the path.” “When personal power is recovered and energy is moving freely people can once again move to being active contributors in their world,” BeverLi said. Spirals, located at 215 E. Woodin Ave., is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday until Sept. 30. Winter hours begin Oct. 1 and are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

by Elle Cosimano One cold, crisp night, Jack Sommers was faced with a choice—live forever according to the ancient, magical rules of Gaia, or die. Jack chose to live, and in exchange, he became a Winter—an immortal physical embodiment of the season on Earth. Every year, he must hunt the Season who comes before him. Summer kills Spring. Autumn kills Summer. Winter kills Autumn. And Spring kills Winter. Jack and Fleur, a Winter and a Spring, fall for each other against all odds. To be together, they’ll have to escape the cycle that’s been forcing them apart. But their creator won’t let them go without a fight.

The Chain

by Adrian McKinty It’s something parents do every morning: Rachel Klein drops her daughter at the bus stop and heads into her day. But a cell phone call from an unknown number changes everything: it’s a woman on the line, informing her that she has Kylie bound and gagged in her back seat, and the only way Rachel will see her again is to follow her instructions exactly: pay a ransom, and find another child to abduct. This is no ordinary kidnapping: the caller is a mother herself, whose son has been taken, and if Rachel doesn’t do as she’s told, the boy will die. “You are not the first. And you will certainly not be the last.” Rachel is now part of The Chain, an unending and ingenious scheme that turns victims into criminals -- and is making someone else very rich in the process. The rules are simple, the moral challenges impossible; find the money fast, find your victim , and then commit a horrible act you’d have thought yourself incapable of just twenty-four hours ago. But what the masterminds behind The Chain know is that parents will do anything for their children. It turns out that kidnapping is only the beginning.

And Then There Were None

3

by Agatha Christie

Ten people, each with something to hide and something to

fear, are invited to a isolated mansion on Indian Island by a host who, surprisingly, fails to appear. On the island they are cut off from everything but each other and the inescapable shadows of their own past lives. One by one, the guests share the darkest secrets of their wicked pasts. And one by one, they die… Which among them is the killer and will any of them survive?

INSIDE STORY

Golfers enjoy a great view of Lake Chelan.

The clubhouse at Bear Mountain Golf Course features a cafe and gift shop.

ccording to head golf professional Rick Reed, it has been a busy summer at Bear Mountain Ranch Golf Course. “People are gravitating toward golf which is great, Reed said. The course is a championship level 18-hole public play course. It accommodates all ability levels with five tee boxes per hole. Reed said that the Bear Mountain course is unique in that it is built on the side of a mountain, so there

is a 700-foot elevation change from the bottom to the top of the course. This gives a different look and feel to the course and enhances the scenic views of the lake and surrounding orchards. The golf course provides habitat for many animals, so a day of golfing can also be a day of viewing birds and other wildlife. The Bear Mountain Ranch Golf Course Cafe serves breakfast and lunch sandwiches, hot dogs and soup.

The on-site golf shop sells apparel with the course logo. The course, owned by Don Barth and Randy Anderson, has three sister courses: The Alta Lake Golf Course, the Rock Island Golf Course, and the Desert Canyon Golf Course. Members receive discounted rates at the sister courses. Reed said that he has been a PGA professional since 1995, when he came to the sport from professional skiing. He came to Bear Mountain Ranch about five months ago from his most recent position at Sandpines Golf course in Florence, Oregon.

Reed spends his time at the golf course overseeing operations and providing private instruction. A PGA Junior League golf program was put on hold this year due to the pandemic, but usually runs each year during the summer months. Bear Mountain Ranch Golf Course, located at 1050 Bear Mountain Ranch Road in Chelan, is open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. every other day of the week.
