HS2 A letter from our MP

Following a couple of meetings with Rob Butler MP, I was concerned that he just didn’t get the level of support for the Wendover Mined Tunnel project in the Wendover community and in the Wendover Parish Council (WPC). I also felt, and others agreed with me, that he wasn’t questioning government sufficiently for Wendover, when it comes to HS2. I thought it only fair to share my findings with him.

Have your say on how Health and Social Care is delivered in Bucks Health and social care providers in Buckinghamshire, including GPs and Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, are calling on residents to participate in the new Health & Social Care Survey. They would like to understand how residents from all backgrounds currently use health and social care services and are particularly interested to hear which services are working well and where possible improvements could be made.

said: “This survey is the first step in understanding how we can improve Buckinghamshire’s health and social care. It is imperative that as the county grows and technologies develop, we explore new ways of delivering these services - but we can’t do this without understanding how our residents feel." Dr Raj Bajwa, Clinical GP Chair for Buckinghamshire’s Clinical Commissioning Group, also said: “We have already seen many changes in how we deliver health and social care services throughout the pandemic and now we are keen to understand your views, so that we can use this information to help inform any future changes we make, so please do get involved.”

The health and social care providers are all part of the Buckinghamshire Integrated Care Partnership who together deliver mental health, social care and physical care to residents. These organisations are responsible for buying and providing health and social care services across the county and are looking at how to achieve better outcomes at an affordable cost in the future The survey closes on Monday 19 October to meet the current and future demands of so to take part, please visit the ‘Your Voice the local population. Woodlanders' Lives & Landscapes

Lockdown challenges help Bucks New University-led history project progress Organisers say the coronavirus-enforced lockdown led to quicker than expected progress for a Buckinghamshire New University-led five-year research project examining the lives of people who lived and worked in central Chilterns over the past 150 years.

Dr Helena Chance (pictured), Associate Professor in Design Studies, who is heading the project, said lockdown had been 'a catalyst' in collecting data more quickly and improving communication between volunteers in the project, Woodlanders' Lives and Landscapes. It examines the day-to-day lives of people who worked in the chair-making and woodware industries, and in lace-making, beading and plaiting straw in the central Chilterns, going back to the 19th Century. Volunteers include two Bucks New University BA (Hons) Graphic Design students, Caitlin Martin and Charlotte Ketteridge, with the University also employing Research Associate Lesley Hoskins. Caitlin and Charlotte have used their skills to create promotion and information material for the project.

Dr Chance said: "Caitlin and Charlotte's contribution has been extremely beneficial for both them and the project and I'm looking forward to working with them more in future, and also working with students elsewhere in the University. We now have 23 volunteers actively working on research, with five volunteers coming forward during lockdown. "The lockdown has given time for researchers to collect huge amounts of data from the population censuses from the mid 19th to early 20th centuries, giving us a breakdown of age, gender and occupation of village residents, so that they can analyse how the numbers of those working in the village industries we are researching change over time." Dr Chance said examples of this included evidence of the dramatic fall in the numbers

Local News of lace makers and straw plaiters by the end of the 19th century, while the crafts of tambour and lace beading were rising in some villages. "During the lockdown period, volunteers were willing and had the time to learn new skills, and our online meetings gave them the opportunity to share information and help each other," added Dr Chance. "Plus, online training was an innovation we were able to explore and record, meaning it is now available to volunteers at any time, and for volunteers joining in the future. This is a great benefit. "Now that we are beginning to collect data from so many villages, it will be possible to understand how the range of and changes in occupations varied regionally across the central Chilterns.

were concentrated in particular villages, how many were there, and how did this change over time? We have reached this point in our research more quickly than we had imagined, and much of that can be attributed to the work we were able to do during lockdown. It's a very exciting development to come out of such a difficult and challenging period." The project runs until Spring 2024 and is aimed to lead to walking tours, bodgers’ pub tours, talks and demonstrations as well as published blogs and articles, and a historic map of the central Chilterns, illustrating where the communities lived and what they did.

Dr Chance would like to hear from volunteers living or working in Buckinghamshire or nearby and interested in family history and social history, filmmaking, blog writing, among other contributions. Rainbow Certified started off with two girls falling in love. Rachael Newby and Sarah Couvillon met in the Canadian Rockies last summer and have since relocated to Aston Clinton, in Buckinghamshire.

Each design is created with lots of passion, love and heartfelt originality to become what it is today. Their idea was simple, create a brand that was fun, funky and equal. A brand that would make everyone smile and that would also support the LGBTQ+ community. And that’s exactly what they did.

They both had the same vision - ‘create a clothing line that was inclusive for everyone and something everyone could be proud to wear.’ When they began their market research in December 2019 they noticed a large absence of pride/LGBTQ+ clothing within the fashion industry and they wanted to change that – immediately!

Wendover Christmas Carol Trail As we go to press in September, new rules about social activities are being decreed. One thing everyone has worked out is that Christmas 2020 will be like no other we have ever experienced. At the moment we don't even know how many people, if any, we can invite to eat in our own homes! There will be Christmas Trees with lights although Wendover Parish Council has already had to cancel the usual Lights Switch On gathering on the Manor Waste. There will not be a CribFest this year either. Instead, we need an outdoor activity to help us feel Christmassy. We'll also need to make sure we keep a safe distance from people from other households. We also need to feel that we, as a community, are doing something together. What better, then, than preparing and visiting displays of Christmas Carols?

Wendover Christmas Carol Trail You will need: A window or front garden A favourite Christmas Carol Imagination

Passers by will see: Your own personal interpretation of your favourite Christmas Carol Examples of Favourite Christmas Carols Songs of Praise Big Sing nominated these as the nation's 10 favourite Christmas Carols: • Hark! The Herald Angels Sing • In The Bleak Midwinter • It Came Upon A Midnight Clear • Joy To The World • O Come All Ye Faithful • O Come, O Come Emmanuel • O Holy Night • O Little Town of Bethlehem • Once In Royal David’s City • Silent Night In alphabetical order.

It may be that these titles don't inspire you or don't include your own personal favourite. It is entirely your choice. The idea is for people to register at carols@ wendoverfreechurch.org.uk for full details. Start planning now. You might find half term at the end of October a convenient time for assembling all the materials you need. Bear in mind that if you have an outdoor display it will need to be weatherproof. We never know what to expect. If it's in a window, take care that curtains can be closed or opened safely if that's what you plan to do. Your display will need to be ready by Friday 11 December and be in place at least until Monday 21 December. That gives people two weekends to follow the trail and enjoy all the Carol displays. An easy to follow trail will be made available so that everyone will be able to enjoy this community activity. There will be prizes! Email now.

Wendover Christmas Carol Trail Friday 11th to Monday 21st December 2020 What is your favourite Christmas Carol?

• An opportunity to create a scene to depict your favourite Christmas Carol in your window or front garden • A family activity to find all the Christmas Carol scenes in Wendover – we will produce a list of streets where you will find the displays. • Prizes for the winning entries! • If you would like to take part making a Christmas Carol display or would like to know more please send an email to carols@wendoverfreechurch.org.uk 16

It might seem like a strange proposition, but some of us will be ordering a Take Away to celebrate Christmas! This is because our wonderful array of hospitality in Wendover has stepped up to the challenge of how best to serve the community. During full lockdown they were completely closed and therefore had no income at all but as soon as they were able to, they adapted their businesses and therefore started to offer take away even if they had never done that before. After all, it is likely that our gatherings will be small but that doesn't mean we can't celebrate with gusto!

available to taste and enjoy. Anyone who cherishes that choice should also indulge it because we are all aware that the hospitality trade has suffered terribly in 2020. Invite your friends to come to Wendover this Autumn and discover so many different foods and styles. Make sure you search every nook and cranny and try them all! One thing everyones agrees about is that Wendover is now the local leader in Café Society! This would have surprised the people who used The Manor Waste on the High Street for so many different purposes over the centuries! Now it is festooned with seats and shading attracting people who appreciate our lovely setting. Seating has also been restored to other pavements and the licencing issues have been settled with Buckinghamshire Council, see also Matters Arising on page 32. Tres Corazones, see advert page 17, had long offered paella as street food for sunny summer weekends and was able to convert this into kit form before inside dining was restored. Now the take away offer has been completely re-vamped to make is so much easier to eat delcious and authentic Spanish food. Click on www.trescorazones.co.uk/ for full details. It is to be found off the High Street in Barn Courtyard behind Antiques at Wendover, see advert on front page. Go through the ancient coaching arch to find a true haven of tranquility. One very personal and domestic feature is the contribution of the matriarch of the family who has taken over complete responsibility for all the lovely plants, leading to the area gaining a new nickname - The Secret Garden. Now that the weather is on the turn, Tori and Stu are extending their range of heart warming soups so make sure you check out the menu for soup(s) of the day. Baked goods are specialities here including exquisite scones and scrumptious quiches. The entire menu is accessible during their opening hours, 10 to 4, Wednesday to Sunday. Lady Grey Tearoom has a quintessentially English atmosphere and was much praised by Mary Berry who visited a few years ago. Please mention Wendover News when responding to adverts

at Christmas? Beef Stroganoff is Back! Yes, that wonderful combination of strips of beef pan-fried with cream and cognac served with amazing straw chips is now on the menu again for local residents. Clubhouse TakeAway at Halton Tennis Centre is transitioning to new management brought to you by the team that owned and operated Le Bistro in Wendover for over 30 years. Due to Coronavirus plus risk assessment and protection measures they are starting on a collection only basis. Full details are available at www.haltonclubhouse.co.uk/. A new and expanding menu is available every week including all the old favourites. Familiar faces are flocking back so make sure you download the app to make it easier for you to order. They opened in early September and so far, the message from happy diners is - welcome back! Spice Garden is very handy for those living out of the centre of Wendover and on or off Tring Road. It boasts a free private car park at the back for the convenience of customers. The clue is in the name - the cuisine is based on spices used in South Asian cooking which enrich flavour, not necessarily making it spicy hot. The combining of different spices is very regional on the sub-continent and it is worth exploring the tastes produced. Spice Garden is very experienced in providing take away food and can home deliver within a three mile radius, see advert left. The interior is extensive so tables are suitably distanced within a relaxing atmosphere. The Spice Garden Banquet is legendary and available to those dining in on Sundays and Wednesdays. Their extensive menu is available on www.thespicegarden.net/. Wendover's Thai restaurant within the George and Dragon is so popular that booking was essential even before our new situation with collecting contact details. Their take away menu proved an instant success once they were able to re-open and you can see from the advert, right, value for money goes alongside tasty food. The George and Dragon offers an extensive Thai menu including a variety of stir fries, curries and house specials. They are very proud of the fact that all dishes are prepared from authentic ingredients in house at the George and Dragon by experienced chef Tu. Click on www.georgeanddragonwendover. com/ to explore the a la carte menu. There are also set menus and special offers to tempt you.

It’s vitally important, therefore, that schools have strong governance, and governors have the relevant skills to ensure that these areas are being managed as effectively as possible. Governors typically attend two or three short meetings every half-term, plus spend time in school talking to staff and pupils. Meetings are always held at the school (or virtually during COVID!) and generally on a Thursday at 4.30pm. £2.1m boost to Buckinghamshire's rural broadband

More than 750 rural homes and businesses will get gigabit-capable broadband by December 2021 as part of a £2.1 million scheme to extend the fibre-optic network further into Buckinghamshire's countryside. The project is a partnership between Buckinghamshire Council, Buckinghamshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), and telecoms provider Openreach. The Buckinghamshire Rural Business Broadband project will provide 'fibre to the premises' connections capable of gigabit (1,000mbps) speeds to 270 of the county's most rural businesses, and 485 residential premises in the surrounding communities. The scheme is funded by a £1.8m grant through the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, and a contribution from Openreach. Welcoming the news, Martin Tett, Leader of Buckinghamshire Council, said local authorities in Buckinghamshire had a strong track record of support for broadband improvements for residents and businesses in areas considered commercially unviable. Since 2013, through partnership schemes with the LEP, superfast broadband has been

connected to more than 50,000 homes and businesses in the county, and 96.4% of premises now have superfast broadband speeds - up from 68.3% when the work began in 2013 Martin said: “In Buckinghamshire we have one of the highest percentages of small businesses of any council area, and they make a significant contribution to the national economy. “While we're building a gigabit Britain, many of our rural residents and businesses are still struggling to operate with broadband at a snail's pace, and I'm pleased this project brings many more out from a digital backwater and on to the superfast highway." Martin said the Council and the LEP would work with the Government to ensure that all residents and businesses in Buckinghamshire can benefit from improved digital connectivity, and see how the county could benefit from the £5 billion Whitehall has set aside for gigabit-capable broadband. Richard Harrington, CEO of Buckinghamshire LEP, said: “We are thrilled to be able to support this project in its aim to provide better connectivity to our poorest served businesses.

"It is vital we support businesses in their aims to digitise, especially as we look past COVID-19 and the changes to workplace models we are seeing. Buckinghamshire LEP are working towards a new digital strategy for Buckinghamshire, and better digital infrastructure forms a core component of this." Laura Whelan, Openreach Regional Partnerships Director South and East, said: “We have already made a great deal of progress across Buckinghamshire as a result of our partnership on the Connected Counties programme, making faster broadband available to tens of thousands of properties for the first time. "The last five months have proved the vital importance of being connected. We know there is more to do, particularly in the most remote areas, and that’s why we’re delighted to be working with Buckinghamshire Council on extending that reach even further. "We’ve also recently announced our own Openreach commitment to extend our fibre build to include the Gerrards Cross and Penn exchanges as part of our ambition to cover more harder to reach areas in the County.” All photos courtesy Openreach.

During lockdown, a member of the Chilterns MS Centre decided to set himself a very tough challenge to help keep him active and also raise money to help others with multiple sclerosis (MS). Patrick Burke, from Berkhamsted, decided to walk for one hour using his rollator, and set himself a large fundraising target. MS affects messages from the brain going to his legs, meaning Patrick has chronic muscle fatigue and poor balance which make walking extremely difficult. Despite this, he completed training most days and managed to walk for the full hour. Although he was incredibly tired afterwards, he said: “I am thrilled that I have proved to myself that I can walk for an hour. Way back in June when I started practising I could only manage 15 minutes so this really has been a big personal achievement and it is something I will remember for a long time. Equally pleasing is the amount I raised for the Chilterns MS Centre, over £5000, this www.wendovernews.co.uk

He took on his almighty challenge of walking for one hour, something he has never been able to achieve until today. To see him power through, with grit and determination, was incredibly inspiring. She worked on farms in the 1950s with one of her strongest memories being the sense of community working in the fields accompanied by singing. She was not afraid to speak the truth where it may not have been welcomed.

Val was a member of the U3A and Buckinghamshire Archaeological Society. She studied her own family history and took her roots back to Oxfordshire and Ross and Cromarty. She was a keen gardener and many stopped to admire the neat and always colourful beds and box hedging on their way up the hill. The “Father Christmas” hats on the topiary always raised a smile.

Local Face: Tess Churchard Tess moved to Wendover 11 years ago with husband Matt and her young son Ben. Having grown up in Great Missenden, Tess loves living in Wendover which she says is so welcoming and friendly. Tess is a trustee at the Wendover Youth Centre and has worked on a voluntary basis to run drama classes there throughout this summer. “It’s been lovely to offer children who have been off school for so long a chance to meet up and have fun.” She also volunteers at John Hampden School, helps with junior church at St Mary’s and has been a volunteer at Wendover Swimming Pool. At primary school in Great Missenden, Tess had a teacher who loved drama and gave her part of the witches’ speeches from Macbeth to perform. She remembers ending the speech with a loud scream before having an asthma attack – but she was hooked!

“I went into acting to perform in plays that had an important message to tell or to make people laugh and these are the jobs I have been most proud of.” As an actress Tess started in theatre and has played leading roles in the West End including 39 Steps and Noises Off. After her son Ben was born she didn’t want to do any more theatre tours and moved into more TV work including Call the Midwife, Casualty, Doctors, The Coroner and EastEnders.

“At Drama Hub I treat each student as an individual, drawing on their interests and often writing scripts especially for them. In our shows there is no star - every student gets a decent role. In our recent version of the BFG we had 7 Sophies and 7 BFGs! “Many of my students have been with me from the beginning and some of my older students help out with the younger classes. Older students take part in film making workshops and we are developing a student technical team. “Coronavirus has been a challenge for us. We missed a term of face to face lessons due to lockdown but when the regulations changed I was able to change our planned show of the BFG into a socially distanced film which we showed at outdoor screenings in September.” St Mary’s vicar Sally Moring has been very supportive of Drama Hub and last year Drama Hub students of different ages put on 3 different shows there: one based around Michael Rosen’s poems, a Horrible Histories show and Alan Ayckbourn’s play ‘Ernie’s Incredible Illucinations’.

She moved to London to do a Sculpture degree and then worked for a Victim Support Scheme, saving up to fund a one year postgraduate course at Drama School. She paid her way over the next few years with work as a waitress, cook, furniture maker and tutor.

5 years ago Tess decided to combine her 2 loves – teaching and acting – and started Drama Hub to provide affordable drama classes to local children and young people. Drama Hub celebrates its 5th Year anniversary this October and now has over 90 pupils.

When Tess was 30 her father was diagnosed as terminally ill - she took some time out of acting to be with him and take stock. She had always loved tutoring so she decided to do a post graduate teaching course. Since then Tess has combined acting and teaching. She has taught in hospital, special and mainstream schools.

“It’s a privilege and a joy to teach the children and young people of Wendover. They are so creative and enthusiastic – we have such fun in lessons. As a shy child drama helped me so much and it’s lovely to see my students grow in confidence and develop their communication and collaboration skills.

Tess is planning to stage an outdoor production involving local children and young people in the first week of the summer holiday in 2021 – she hopes this will become an annual event and will lead to a really established Wendover Youth Theatre. Contact: dramahubwendover@gmail.com

Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page

View from the Chair

As I write this Wendover is bustling as people enjoy a late warm spell. The pavement cafés that are now a feature of the village are bursting with life and I hope it is helping the businesses that surround them as they strive to recover from the lockdown period. The Parish Council is very aware of the disturbance that is caused by high speed and high volume motors racing along our bypass. I have in the past attended meetings with our County Councillors and the Deputy Police Commissioner for Thames Valley in an attempt to fix this problem but our efforts have trickled away as these things do. The WPC has resolved to set up a community led working group to look at all of the options and to bring pressure to bear on those with the power to improve the situation for residents. If you’re interested in joining us for this project please contact the Clerk. See also page 15. One of the results of the WPC’s experience working with the Wardens during lockdown is that we have discovered that while care and support is available it is a fragmented resource. Help is available from many sources and for many things but it’s not clear how it can be accessed. WPC has resolved to work with the community to see if a way can be found to simplify the process. If you’re interested in joining us for this project please contact the Clerk. Tom Walsh, Chairman Wendover Parish Council www.facebook.com/wendoverparish/

Fruit and veg stall return to the Thursday market

offered rent-free space on Manor Waste, with Rumsey’s and No.2 taking up the offer.

Wendover Parish Council are pleased to confirm that the Fruit and Veg stall, Sinfield’s, returned to the weekly Thursday market, held on Manor Waste, on 10 September 2020. We, along with many residents, are happy to have them back.

The continental café culture has been well received by the community. Regulars visiting Rumsey’s and No.2 are now joined by visitors from outside the village, all enjoying the delightful atmosphere created by this initiative. The Clerk is now consulting with both businesses to examine the feasibility of this becoming a permanent feature in the village.

Parish Council Meeting For meeting updates please visit www.wendover-pc.gov.uk/meetings

The decision by Buckinghamshire Council to renew pavement licencing impacted for a short time on Istanbul, Tres Corazones and No.2. The action contradicted the Parish Council plans to support the local hospitality businesses and upset many of their regular customers.

Wendover Annual Quiz

Due to the unprecedented times, Wendover Parish have sadly had to cancel the Annual Quiz event. However, we could not let you go without one at all! Our brilliant quiz master, Alan Myers, will provide a quiz round every Thursday from 8 October to 26 November, with a break for half term on 29 October. The quiz rounds will be made available each week on the Wendover Parish Council website and Facebook page. Hard copies will also be made available at the Clock Tower and Library. The answers to each round will be posted the following week. There will be no prizes, just a lot of fun! We look forward to as many of you joining as possible.
