Wendover looked wonderful, as always, so thank you, thank you, to everyone who made that possible. Anyone entering the High Street from either direction entered a magical static light show which didn't distract the drivers. Pedestrians had an even better view of all the lovely shop windows, see also page 19, and could enjoy going in to buy something not available online and actually discuss the purchase with a human being! Then we progress to that new phenomenon of having a hot drink under a gazebo in the middle of Winter! Special thanks to the efforts of our younger generation who worked so hard to make beautiful decorations for our Big Manor Waste Tree, sponsored by No2 Pound Street. The competition winners are shown right.

Lionel Abel-Smith Trust

The Trust was established in 1977 when Lionel Abel-Smith, Lord of the Manor of Wendover, gave the village a number of properties in Pound Street. His wish was that the rental income be used to support organisations and individuals in Wendover. Over the years, more than £1.5 million has been awarded in grants and loans. The Trustees will hold their 43rd Annual meeting on Wednesday 28 April 2021 to consider grant applications from individuals and organisations from within the parish of Wendover and the Moor Park Estate. Applications must be received by Friday 28 February with full contact details and, if possible, email address to: clerk@ wendovertrust.org or Clerk to the Trust, 51 Dobbins Lane, Wendover Bucks HP22 6DL. For details go to www.wendovertrust.org. Grants can be made for real need throughout the year.

A new survey has been launched to get the opinions of people living in and around Wendover about the town’s open spaces and how to meet the agreed goal in the Neighbourhood Plan to improve the town’s skate park.

Every person who completes the survey and leaves a valid email will be entered into a prize draw where the winner will win a selection of skate gear. The survey closes 31 January. Please feel free to contact the working group on: wendoveropenspaces@gmail.com.

The survey is the work of the newly established Open Spaces & Skate Park Working Group set up to report to Wendover Parish Council on current usage of our open spaces as well as making proposals for new facilities. The Working Group is eager to hear from people - especially young people - about where Wendover's new skate park should go and what else there should be for young people to do in Wendover. HS2 update The Reality of Living with HS2

The immediate negative impacts of HS2 on Wendover are clear and terrible. The longterm disruptions that will be caused by its construction are harder to imagine but just as real. Ask the residents of Bowood Lane. They are currently living on the frontline. Fusion, the HS2 early works contractor, are using Bowood Lane as a site access road, mainly for vegetative clearance. Many of you will remember the fine words in Parliament about HS2 being good neighbours and using lorry wheel washers and sweepers and traffic management to mitigate disruption. That was “pie in the sky”. Also remember that this is not the main event, it’s a tiny contract and it’s causing chaos because of bad management and indifference. Mud, damage and trespass are commonplace and residents can get no redress from Fusion, HS2 or from the Highway Authority. If this is a microcosm of the impact of the whole

A New Year and a New Start!

After 2020 many people may well want a fresh start for the new year. One important thing to consider is ensuring your personal affairs are in order.

Regular reviews

Reviewing Wills regularly is very important. I recommend doing so at least every 3-5 years, or sooner if there is a change in personal circumstances, legislation, or on divorce or marriage.

Thank you to the organisers of the Christmas Carol Trail in Wendover. Such ingenuity! Such joy! By following this trail at least we could indulge in a little silent Carol singing. As we go to press, gales are forecast and the hope is that the outdoor displays will survive! Many thanks to all who brightened our gloomy days. Well done all those who took part in the Princess Mary Gate Advent Calendar windows. A great community initiative.

Business Forum Ashridge Home Care awarded for its Innovation in Care during the Pandemic by Care Industry Experts

November saw Care Heroes Awards Week and Ashridge Home Care win a prestigious title to mark its efforts during the past year. The 4 year old home care company, which arranges either live-in or visiting carers to attend clients across the South East of England, was crowned winner in the Innovation in Care category. This award celebrates those companies that have thought outside the box to bring joy and comfort to those they care for. Judges said Ashridge Home Care won for their willingness and total commitment to their staff and customers and their unwavering dedication to continue to deliver 24 hour care to their entire client base. Trudi Scrivener, Managing Director of Ashridge Home Care said: “Winning this prestigious Home Care Heroes (Innovation) 2020 Award makes me immensely proud. These awards mark the success of the whole team, who show absolute dedication and commitment to providing outstanding home care. The team were 100% committed to ensuring that carers were looked after and motivated so they in turn could ensure our clients were happy and safe. The ideas and outside the box thinking was truly inspiring and we will continue many practices even once this pandemic is over. To be recognised by an award is such great news amidst a tough time for everyone working in frontline services. Our focus now is to continue to support as many people as possible who want to remain in their own homes.”

Innovation has always been rewarded and encouraged at Ashridge. Prior to Covid 19 a carer who was a great chef was promoted to head chef and helped mentor other carers whose skills were lacking in the kitchen to learn how to cook simple meals for their clients. This resulted in a recipe book which is shared amongst carers and during lockdown Trudi secured help from TV nutritionist Janet Brinkworth from TV’s Saturday Morning Kitchen. Together they launched Ashridgelicious Food Lovers group for the live-in carers to learn new easy, nutritious meals to cook for their clients as well as featuring an online Q&A option so if a carer couldn’t access ingredients she suggested good alternatives. The group shared photos of food and were encouraged to make mealtimes special. One carer tried the Pizza Express dough recipe and made passata from scratch for a lovely home cooked Italian meal. Whilst another recreated a favourite restaurant setting with their client. The whole head office team was innovative and took part in sourcing other professional help from within the community – they arranged for various health practitioners to share videos enabling carers to help their clients, one from a footcare practitioner to teach carers basic footcare to help clients who couldn’t attend appointments. A visiting carer also runs a successful yoga business ‘Zest Yoga’ and she developed a 10 minute yoga routine that carers could do with clients to keep them moving and increase their circulation. Trudi even managed to source a celebrity - Frontman of Spandau Ballet, Tony Hadley, to share a morale boosting message. Currently an online book group for clients and carers is in development.

Ashridge Home Care employs more than 80 visiting and live-in carers and works with clients across the South East England from its base in Amersham, Buckinghamshire. To find out more about Ashridge Home Care visit www.ashridgehomecare.co.uk or for an informal chat about how a visiting or a live-in carer might benefit someone in your family telephone 01494 917344. Kings Farm Shop

Kings Farm Shop is always improving the customer offer and the customer experience. Dry aged beef has become a speciality so in late November they installed an even bigger fridge (3 metres wide) to give an even greater supply.

Now that Kings Farm Shop, https:// kingsfarmshop.co.uk/, has more capacity for dry aged beef, they can offer a wider range of mostly on-bone sirloin and on-bone rib of beef. You can also choose from the leaner continental breeds like Simmental Cross or Limousin or stay with the traditional British Hereford or Aberdeen Angus breeds. The process dries out excess water do the meat is tastier because the flavour is more concentrated. If you have a special occasion coming up, please make sure you order in advance to avoid disappointment.

Club Corner Wendover Cricket Club

Despite the on-going Covid-19 issues, Wendover Cricket Club enjoyed an active half season with many players showing increased enthusiasm for playing regularly. Covid guidelines keep changing but the club is hoping to run modified junior indoor training in January to March; however, restrictions mean adults will likely wait for an outdoor start in April. It is also hoped to start a Girls Section via signing up to the ECB’s Dynamos Scheme for 8 to 11 year olds during the summer; register initial interest by email to wendoverccgirls@gmail.com. Progress with HS2 is slow, but much behind the scenes work is on-going to try and ensure that the relocation project at Tring Road can get going quickly, once the go-ahead to properly start is given. Cricket at the Ellesborough Road ground will occur in 2021 with the ground leased from HS2, but that will be the last season as a cricket ground - with a “leaving event” planned for Saturday 25 September 2021. The club will be holding their AGM on 28 January via Zoom; more details, other stories and the season’s senior averages, plus contacts for enquiries can be found on the website www. pitchero.com/clubs/wendovercricketclub.

Wendover Horticultural Society

In our optimistic way, we have arranged our 2021 monthly meetings to be held at St Anne’s Hall at 2.30 pm on the first Thursday of the month, once we are able to. We have got to be positive, and accept that the first one, on 7 January, will not now take place. For the future, we will decide whether to continue the February meeting, and later ones, on a monthly basis. Hopefully we are close to re-opening and it would be silly to take risks and hold meetings just before the vaccines become available. It is hoped that we will be able to continue with the coach trip to the RHS at Hyde Hall gardens at Chelmsford on Thursday 20 May.

Wendover Bowls Club

Our Club is a Bowls Club with no bowling! How we all miss it, especially at this time of year when our social scene should have been in full swing. Still, we are better off than the Tudors. I was watching a programme about the festivities in King Henry VIII's time. Evidently it was an arrestable offence to play bowls during the Christmas period. I'm not sure if King H had got the Christmas message of goodwill to all men and peace on earth because it was OK to knock lumps out of each other with swords and shoot arrows, but no bowls. I shouldn't be surprised if the law isn't still on the statute books - I have not heard of any of our club members being arrested but, of course, we have not been playing. On behalf of the Bowls Club may I wish everyone a Happy New Year. Don Knight

50plus began as a handyman service almost 21 years ago. Today the service portfolio has grown to include a broad set of home repair, improvement and commercial services and very much in keeping with the company’s name - a range of services for the elderly.

50plus is run from their head office on Chesham High Street with field staff distributed over a wide area. Customers often pop in to the offices to get questions answered and are always welcomed. In keeping with the times the company offers online booking and has embraced technology to provide a range of easy to use technically enabled services for our elderly customers. 50plus was originally conceived as a means of providing employment for those aged 50plus and whilst they remain true to the original ideal, the idea of using mature service providers together with a service orientated structure, chimes with customers who are 50plus. So telephone (and today email, web, WhatsApp and more) enquiries are answered, free advice is provided and appointments are run on a date and time basis. So as they say: they are different - it's all about the service.

HS2 and Me A story from Nash Lee

(about a mile from Wendover) So far, just a few people in the Wendover area have been directly affected by HS2, mostly farmers. Once serious construction starts, we are all going to be affected. This story began in early 2019. There were already several other points of contention with HS2 plans at Nash Lee, but HS2 had not previously mentioned this one. Suddenly, someone decided that it was very urgent to check on the structural integrity of a National Grid pylon. This pylon had not moved 1 mm in the 60+ years of its existence, but now looking in detail at the foundations was of great urgency. Instead of trying to reach agreement over access and timing, HS2 decided that since Parliament had granted them the Power to Possess land temporarily, they would insist on using that legal power. They would not listen to the fact that they only needed 0.5 acre of land, but insisted on possessing 7 acres. That possession caused the maximum inconvenience possible for farming the 90+ % of the holding on the other side of the 7 acres. HS2 promised that they would take possession for less than 1 year. They eventually took possession in early November 2019, despite the option to do the work in the dry weather of September. Remember, this investigation was supposed to be urgent and on a critical path for other work! They chose the wettest month (February 2020) of the wettest winter in recorded history to move heavy equipment onto the site. HS2 Contractors were actually on site for less than five full days, and occupied just 0.5 acre of the 7 acres possessed. They dug two very large holes in the soil, to access the foundations of the pylon. The concrete down there turned out to be exceedingly hard, and they failed to get a proper core sample. In their unsuccessful attempt to get a sample, they burned out the motor of a coring machine.

16

Wendover News January 2021

Was this work at all necessary? NO! After well in excess of a year now, HS2 still have possession, indicating little sign of giving up possession. During their almost five days on site, they managed to damage one or more land drains, because of choosing such a poor time of the year to do the work. Now that winter is here again, water escapes onto Nash Lee Road. The risk of ice forming and accidents on such a busy hospital feeder road ought to be obvious - even to HS2. But they do nothing to effect repairs themselves, or to hand back possession for others to solve the problem. HS2 is set to cost eye-watering amounts of money, that we and our children will end up paying for. Small incidents like this case will occur throughout the project. No wonder that the HS2 project is set to cost such staggering amounts of money. Is HS2 a competent organisation? Does HS2 take its responsibilities seriously? NO! Complaints have been made to HS2 Ltd, and referred on to the DfT. Does the DfT do anything? NO! Our local MP has written to the HS2 Minister, that same HS2 Minister who has sworn to improve the way HS2 behaves. We shall see what the HS2 Minister actually does about the situation. There is now talk of handing back the land in January but the new delay is that HS2 hasn't yet devised a plan to do this!!! In addition, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) has now proved that the HS2 work has also damaged a Thames Water Sewage pipe! There are plans to make temporary repairs to divert water away from Nash Lee Road, and repair the sewage pipe. The UK Construction Industry has a 2+ week break over Christmas, so before Christmas or January??? Bob Lewis

Challenges New year is a great time to re-evaluate old habits and adopt new ones. For our first article of 2021, here are three challenges to help reduce your personal contribution to climate change while pursuing goals you might already have.

of homes in the UK are on a green tariff. Choosing a green tariff shows the demand is there. It sends a message to your supplier and the wider industry that you wish to avoid electricity generated from fossil fuels.

The Food Challenge Every week, households across the country typically throw away 10% of food purchased so aiming to reduce food wastage to just 2% will be a great start. According to Greenpeace, raising livestock creates as much greenhouse gas emissions as all vehicle emissions combined. In contrast, vegetables and chicken have a carbon footprint that is 10 times smaller per serving than red meat and dairy. Reducing the amount of animal products you consume can make a huge difference in your personal carbon footprint.

The Transport Challenge The government has put forward its plan to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030, so if you are thinking of changing your car in the next couple of years it makes sense to consider a hybrid or electric car. A £1.3bn investment has been pledged by the government to accelerate the roll-out of EV charging points in homes, streets and on motorways across England.

According to multiple environmental studies conducted by the United Nations, this decade is our last chance to reduce the damage we The Home Challenge have done to the Earth through our global Household consumption of gas, electric and greenhouse gas emissions. So now is the water is a big contributor to our personal time to take action and start a new challenge carbon footprint and currently about 10% for 2021 to reduce your personal footprint.

HS2 trains are going to be worse north of Wendover. The cutting into the hill has vertical sides to stop sound travelling, than we thought ! This, in turn, is likely to result in increased Water monitoring risks of flooding north of Wendover, while the reservoir will be irreparably damaged. We remain very concerned that, if the council do not respond to the design submission robustly, we will lose the opportunity to protect Weston Turville Reservoir SSSI and the canal forever. Worse, we will see increased water flows down Stoke Brook leaving the new housing in Aylesbury to face flooding.

In the past few months, we have been engaged with the Environment Agency (EA) and HS2 contractors on this matter. HS2 contractors EKFB are now carrying out water testing and measurement to determine the amount of water in the aquifer and we await the results. Unleashing your Happiness Hello, I’m Lauren, a passionate and experienced relationship advisor and coach to women, men, couples, families and friends. I have witnessed the effects of the pandemic on people’s lives and want to help as many of you as I can from my SafeSpace studio in Wendover. We can talk together over a secure video call or on a 1 to 1 walking route to help navigate you through life personally and within your relationships with confidence, empowering you to unleash your happiness. I understand that everyone’s personal and family life is individual to them, so I have put together my survival starter kit for lockdown and beyond. Enlist any of the

following to begin with and you can build on them as you feel able. • OBJECTIVES – Set these on a Sunday to start your week on a positive note keeping present and focused on the week ahead. • ROUTINE – Have a daily one and try to follow it e.g. set an alarm, make your bed, wash, get dressed and have a fresh lemon water to kick start your digestive system. • MANAGE YOUR DAY – Section your day (into morning, afternoon and evening) include one action that makes you feel good in each of them. • ME TIME – This is essential, make time for YOU as and how you need it. • COMMUNICATE – Speak to someone and tell them how you’re feeling, what is and isn’t working for you. You shouldn’t feel alone. • EXERCISE – This has a huge impact on mental health, just a short walk in the

fresh air can change your mindset. • NOURISHMENT – Try to cut out as much of the junk and ‘easy options’ as possible, these contribute to you feeling low and unmotivated. Spend the time cooking, experimenting and getting creative. Make sure you have a treat though! • FAMILY TIME – Set aside an hour a day at least for devoted family time to bring the household back together. This will be of great benefit to your children too. • ROMANCE – Diarise a weekly date night, alternating the cook and the pot washer, keep it fun and interesting… who said romance was dead? • FUN – play games, laugh, dance, sing, play music, tell jokes - all are free to do and build morale and promote happiness for yourself and within your home. Local Face: Liz Youens, MBE Liz Youens has been collecting certificates all her life, having gained her adult swimming certificate in 1979, when she learned to swim. By May 1981 she was awarded her Swimming Teaching Certificate. Friday 9 October 2020 brought her a different scale of certificate: an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list, delayed from June due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. An MBE is awarded for an outstanding achievement or service to the community. This will have had a long-term, significant impact and stand out as an example to others. Elizabeth Anne Youens was given this award for voluntary service to swimming in Wendover, Buckinghamshire. The building of the Swimming Pool in Wendover was a huge community effort back in the 1970s. Liz’s children benefitted and that led to Liz becoming a stalwart, starting with admin reception work but then going on to learn to swim herself, becoming a swimming teacher and then a lifeguard.

Liz and fellow volunteers surprised by photographer Matt Brown at the re-opening of the Pool on 4 November 2017 after a major refurbishment

She didn’t stop there, though, going on to become a teacher of lifeguarding, not to mention teaching diving at Green Park SubAqua Club, currently their longest standing member. To read more about Liz, go to https://wendovernews.co.uk/news/localface-liz-youens/. Liz has given so much of her mature adult life to Wendover Swimming Pool that she really deserved this honour. Without her hours of volunteer work, Wendover would

not have its Pool. Liz’s role has always been to make sure that the Pool functioned on a daily basis. She was never a part of the group which struggled against difficult odds to cover the Pool and make sure it continued to function as a top quality resource for everyone in Wendover, residents and workers alike. As part of her daily assistance, with her friend Katrina Larkin, Liz ran the Early Bird sessions six days a week until November 2019. The Pool recently reopened for lane swimming and shielding swims, as well as children’s swimming lessons. Family/ leisure swims are expected to return soon, Covid permitting. The Pool Trustees took advantage of lockdown to complete a ventilation refit at the Pool in order to both comply with Covid ventilation requirements and deal with airflow issues that have plagued the Pool for some time. Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page

View from the Chair

A new year is a good time for reflection in an organisation like WPC. 2020 was not my favourite year, though I did get a grandson out of it. The WPC, despite everything that we have all endured, is in good order. It has risen to meet the challenges of our times and it is, I think, closer to our community than it ever has been. Our professional staff has carried on maintaining and improving our estate. They have supported the Wendover Good Neighbour Scheme and enabled council to address some big issues in cooperation with parishioners and local organisations. For me, this is how a parish council should work. A new year is also a good time for personal reflection. As a result of my musings I have decided that this is a good time for me to step down from the chairmanship of WPC. Yes, this will be the last of my rustic ramblings on the back page. February’s council meeting will elect a new chairman. I am sad to go but it’s the right time for me to pursue other interests. I will still remain as a parish councillor to help with HS2 matters if council wishes. I would like to thank you all for supporting the WPC during my tenure. It is that support that has made the job so very rewarding. Tom Walsh, Chairman Wendover Parish Council
