CLUB CORNER

Wanted: memory-makers and confidence builders

Young people love to build dens. But it’s not just about how much fun they have, or the amazing memories they make. They’re learning to work together, think for themselves and play their part. Scouts prepares young people with skills for life. As a helper with Scouts you can use your skills to help young people find theirs. For more information about helping with 1st Wendover Scouts please contact Andrew Inkley on 01296 580622 or email andrew. inkley@1stwendoverscouts.co.uk.

June is busting out all over!

This is one of the best months for visiting a local BBOWT reserve and seeing the wildlife of the Chilterns. Aston Clinton Ragpits reserve is famed for its orchids, Bacombe Hill has junipers and great views of the Vale, Weston Turville Reservoir offers level paths and lakeside spots to picnic while Dancersend has everything - woods, meadows, secret valleys and its own offering of unusual plants if you know where to look. The BBOWT website give access details of each one and if you are lucky you may still find a place on a guided walk in June or July - email jonesmick365@gmail.com for the latest on these. Finally College Lake with its easy walking circuit, lakes, picnic tables, cafe, book and gift shops has something for everyone and is due to be open every day in June from 9.30am. richardbirch60@yahoo.com

Wendover Bowls Club

I am glad to say we are back in business again after such a long break. We are all a little rusty and some of us do not bend in the middle as readily as we did (I must go on a diet). Some clubs are struggling to get going and have canceled matches as they are unable to get players for matches. No problems like that for us so far.

I played in a rather bizarre match against Linslade recently. It all started well enough as our Captain welcomed the oposition. As he spoke a few flakes of sleety snow fell. By the time the match started it was snowing hard, but we bowlers are a hardy bunch and we carried on. Soon the green was covered in about three quarters of an inch of wet snow. What eventually brought it to a halt was that the bowls picked up the snow as they ran across the green and finished up several sizes larger than they started. Suddenly a cup of tea and a biscuit seemed a good idea.

The green is playing well and the damage rooks did to the surface in the winter is not noticeable. All the surrounds and flower beds are beautiful with the promise of lots of colour to come. All the folk who have turned out in the rotten weather we have recently to plant and tidy and even grub up hedges really do deserve a pat on the back. Don Knight

Rotary in Wendover

Rotary in Wendover is participating in the Keep Britain Tidy Great British Spring Clean 28 May to 13 June 2021 and has asked Wendover Parish Council to lend equipment and suggest an area not covered by the regular WPC litter clearing. Do you have any practical ideas about how we can deal with the tsunami of litter now washing over our beautiful countryside?

Wendover Cricket Club

Wendover Cricket Club began its first committed foray into Girls Cricket with a Taster Session at the Witchell ground on 12 May, led by Bucks Cricket Board coach Emma Boswell-Harris. Months of background work paid off as the session proved hugely successful with 32 girls aged 8 to 12 taking part in an action-packed 75 minute programme of cricketing activity.

The Club is participating in the ECB Dynamos programme, but using it for girls only. It started on Sunday 16 May and will initially run for 8 weekly sessions on Sunday mornings. Sessions will be packed full of fun and new skills will be learned and it is a perfect introduction for all girls new to the sport, as well as those looking to build on what they already know.

For enquiries on girls cricket, email wendoverccgirls@gmail.com.

Other cricket is continuing but the early part of the season has been affected by the weather. There are senior matches at weekends and junior/youth matches in 9 age groups. For more info, contact Jonathan Seabrook at jseabrook@talktalk. net or visit www.pitchero.com/clubs/ wendovercricketclub.

Wendover Horticultural Society

Unless there are future snags, it looks hopeful that COVID restrictions will be lifted in June. If that happens, the Wendover Horticultural Society will hold its first Thursday meeting since February 2020 on the first of July. Confirmation will be in the form of posters nearer the date and an e-mail to members.

We decided to move our venue to give us space and it is to be at St Anne’s Hall, not the library. To fit in with them we will meet on the first Thursday of each month, at the usual time of 2.30pm. The speaker will be John Tyler, well known to us as he has given successful talks before. He will be talking about “Fungi”. For a few minutes before that we will hold a short AGM. Please support this first meeting, visitors would be warmly welcomed.

We are hoping to get out and about as soon as we can safely, the first outing is fixed for 15 July, a coach trip to Rodmarton Manor near Cirencester. There is little time between the last road map date and the outing, but we would really like to be in a position to go ahead with the trip, if safe to do so. Minimum numbers are essential so if you are interested, non-members are welcome if we have space, please contact Diane on diane.smith131@btinternet.com for further details.

Come join the fun!
