ROB BUTLER, MP

As 2021 draws to a close, many of us will be reflecting on a particularly difficult year. Covid has loomed large in our lives, despite the great success of the vaccine programme. Sadly, many people have died from the virus or suffered serious illness, and I extend my condolences to all who have lost loved ones.

November is the time we typically come together to remember those who gave their lives in conflict, and I was honoured to join this year’s service in Wendover and to lay a wreath in memory of the fallen. It was good to see so many people, of all generations, gathering to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice so that we can live in peace and freedom.

In Parliament, we have all been devastated by the killing of our colleague Sir David Amess. His death was all the more shocking because it happened while he was meeting local people in his constituency. MPs of all parties are subject to threats and abuse on an almost daily basis. This cannot be right and I very much hope that the tragic loss of David will prompt long-overdue change in the way people behave towards all those who represent them in public office, and can help us be kinder to one another even when we disagree. It is perhaps something to reflect upon as we approach the festive season, and look forward to a brighter, happier new year.
