Wendover Cricket Club
Wendover Cricket Club’s senior teams are having mixed fortunes. In the Mid Bucks League, the 1st XI top Division 1 and have secured 3 big victories in the last month versus Bradenham (Ben Pope 68, Jonathan Seabrook 4-14), Lt Gaddesden (Pope 50, Kush Bhargava 54, George Robinson 4-23) and Frieth (G Robinson 5-10). The 2nds in Div. 3 beat Bradenham (Puneet Kapoor 66, Anshuman Pandit 47) but lost to Ley Hill (A Pandit 42) and Aylesbury (Bob Glue 4-36). In friendlies, we chased down 232 at Boxmoor to win by 4 wickets (Jimmy Cook 4-58, Tony Fish 42, Chris Hunt 71* & Zac Fish 32*). Other notable performances include Calum Grainge’s 93 at Taplow, Ben Edmonds 55 & Hector Charlesworth 57 at Lt Marlow and Ben Sjoberg 41* at Penn Street. Junior cricket has reduced during the holiday period but girls cricket has continued with training and games, whilst some matches in most age groups have been or will be played in August. An U8’s cricket festival was held on 5 August and 30 participated. Some juniors have been regularly playing with the senior teams.
It’s not too late to join up with the seniors as their matches extend to 25 September. All enquiries including juniors to Jonathan Seabrook on 07767 148119 or jseabrook@talktalk.net.

Wendover Singers Community Choir
We would like to thank all those wonderful people who supported us with our very first ‘No. 1 Summer Concert’ in June; everyone from helpers to audience helped to make this such a success. We all enjoyed the experience and we know from the reactions and supportive comments that our audience did too.
Over the last few weeks our numbers have expanded significantly and we are near capacity. We start rehearsals again in September and will be preparing a repertoire for the Christmas Lights Switch On in Wendover as well as for our summer 2023 concert. If you would like to sing with us we have a very few places left and then it is the ‘waiting list’! Please contact our choir secretary for more information at carol@aimzine.co.uk. See advert page 4.

Wendover Bowls Club
Phew!! What a scorcher. The heat did for our long awaited Gala but a monumental effort by Eric and Ann Smith and others saw it played just two weeks later. Eleven of the original fourteen teams agreed to come on the new date. This left us in a bit of a quandary as we need even numbers for the draw. We could have fielded a Wendover team but it is considered bad form to win your own Gala so they would have to have played to lose. At the last minute another club joined us saving an embarrassing situation. The day was a great success. Not only does the Gala swell the coffers, but it is a great showcase for the club and most of the clubs that came have promised to return next year. A real feather in the cap for all the hard work the event entails.
This extraordinary weather has taken its toll on matches with several cancellations. By their very nature bowling greens do not offer shade and the sight of elderly parboiled bowlers has to be avoided. Still, at last the forecast is talking about rain so it will probably pour between now and Christmas and we will all be able to have a good grumble.

The Stoke Mandeville Village Society reignited
In 1973, a group of local residents formed The Stoke Mandeville Society, with aims to to “preserve a village way of life and community spirit”, it sadly disappeared in the 1980’s and 30 years of over-development is now evident in the village and surrounding neighbourhoods within the parish. Determined to continue its work, a group of passionate residents, local groups and businesses have come together to revitalize The Society with a mission to: protect & enhance the village’s character, charm & scale, improve our sense of community and thereby put ‘village life’ back into the heart of our historic village.
The Society has a clear vision to ensure the original Village, with its post-war developments, reclaims its boundaries, charm, sense of community and historic past. It will protect the history, ensure it is fit for purpose for the future, encourage and develop community activities, promote interest and awareness throughout Bucks & beyond. It will also support local community eco-friendly initiatives, organize social and informative events, monitor planning applications, and consult members on relevant issues.
Run by Stoke Mandeville Villagers for Stoke Mandeville Villagers, it is politically nonaligned and welcomes everyone over the age of 18 years, living, working, or visiting the Village. It already has over 60 members, with many more joining and hopes by the end of the year to have at least half of the Village residents and businesses signed up. Being a subscriber to the website & membership is free in the first year. For more information, to become a member or to volunteer your time to help the society achieve its aims, please email: stokemandevillevillage@gmail.com, check out Instagram @stokemandevillevillage and watch out for our website, currently in development.

Our expected speaker on 1 September is now unable to attend. We are most fortunate that Edwin Rye, who was to speak in November, can speak on “Plants for late Summer and Autumn”. On 6 October, Sandy Primrose is speaking on “The Art of Low Maintenance gardening”. Both meetings start at 2.30 pm at St Anne’s Hall, cost £3.00. The 14 September trip to Arla is fully booked.
