Wendover Dementia Support looks after the social wellbeing of people and families affected by dementia in Wendover and the surounding area. They had their annual general meeting on the 10th of May.
Dr Pippa Moreton thanked all the volunteers and friends who attended the second AGM of Wendover Dementia Support (WDS), for all their sterling support over four years. Covid lockdown meant that no AGMs could have happened during that time.
Her thanks went to the drivers who help transport the visitors and their carers where appropriate; the welcomers who look after the visitors during each session, the administrators, the hospitality from the kitchen – including home-made cakes – and all the back room work that goes into supporting the whole family.
Wendover Dementia Support currently looks after fifty-two families and has supported a total of one hundred and ten families since it was formed.

As well as offering games – dominoes is the favourite – and crafts, activities include knitting, singing and even dancing. We have two sessions on Monday mornings, and numbers have grown to exceed the capacity of Wendover Christian Centre. Experienced trustees are available for confidential aid to families about specific issues. Carers can also attend special sessions at workfriendly times. Tea Dances on Saturdays have also been restored, one in December and another in the Summer.
The relationship between Westongrove Health Centres and Wendover Dementia Support is completely professional.

The work of Wendover Dementia Support is enabled by donations and legacies of the visitors and family members, as well as grants. These include Wendover Parish Council and Lionel Abel-Smith Trust, as well as local organisations including the Friends of Wendover Health Centre. At the AGM, Stephen Worth, President of Wendover & District Rotary, gave a cheque value £2,200 (see photo below). The AGM was sponsored by the son of a visitor.
Dr Moreton was very grateful for all the financial support but insisted that the main thing WDS gives to its families is love, which allows them to flourish while they live with dementia. Visit our website at wendoverds.org.uk email wendoverds@gmail.com or ring 07732 342409.

Proudly displaying our Top 20 Care Home Award 2023, Residents and Members of Rayners Resident Committee and Management and members of our excellent ‘Team Rayners’

Rayners
Rayners was established in June 1990, being the first purpose built care home for the elderly in South Buckinghamshire. Set in the Chiltern village of Hyde Heath, Amersham, with our local pub, village shop, infant school and village green, Rayners and our residents remain an important part of the local and vibrant village community.
2023 Top 20 Award
We are officially one of the Top 20 rated care homes in the South East of England in 2023. This award from carehome.co.uk is extremely special to us at Rayners. The South East covers 9 counties and included 2708 Care Homes. Carehome.co.uk remains the leading independent UK review site for care homes. Chris Matthews, Managing Director of

Rayners said, “The whole of ‘Team Rayners’ feels extremely privileged to have received the Top 20 Care Home Award for 2023, for the South East of England. It is a great accolade to their commitment and hard work in ensuring Rayners remains committed to the highest standards of care and service to all our residents and I would like to thank and congratulate them all.” Residents too were elated to hear the fantastic news. Our Residents’ Committee is already planning a Champagne Garden Party in the Summer as one of the things to commemorate this fantastic achievement.

Ellesborough Road closures
During June there are going to be extended closures of Ellesborough Road as the various underground utility services are diverted along the temporary diversion route behind the cottages. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout, but vehicles will be diverted via Terrick.
Work on the embankments for the bailey bridge is progressing, with drainage and underground electricity cables installed in May. The new road is due to open in September.
Nash Lee road diversions
The diversion of Nash Lee Road and Lane (see photo below) are due to come into use on the 4th of June, and the road between the Wendover Bypass roundabout and the Chiltern Brewery will be closed the week before to alter the road layout. We’ve been assured that during this closure that Ellesborough Road will remain open to allow traffic to get to and from Butlers Cross.

Ongoing excavation
In addition to removal of topsoil we understand that the Environment Agency has allowed HS2 to excavate one metre of sub-soil for the Green Tunnel (see photo below), and its location alongside the bypass is now becoming more visible.

Construction exhibition
HS2 are holding a second 'Meet the Team' exhibition at Lindengate on 15th June between 15:00 and 19:00 when you will be able to interrogate the project managers and engineers building the line. Their Mobile Information Centre will also be back outside Budgens on 12th July, 10:00 to 15:00. Details can be found at www.hs2.org.uk/events
Issues with HS2?
With increased construction activity over the Summer Months there’s a likelihood of more issues arising. If you are affected, please contact the HS2 Helpdesk team on 08081 434 434 (available 24 hours a day) or email hs2enquiries@hs2.org.uk. It helps if you have photographic evidence and please get a complaint reference number so that we can follow up issues as needed.
Need
our help?
If you need further help, want to join us, or have ideas and suggestions that would mitigate the community impact, then get in touch at enquiries@ whs2.org

Further digging is dependent on HS2 coming up with an acceptable plan for handling any interference with the Coombe Hill aquifer. The HS2 Minister has agreed that we will see the plan once agreed, but no date has been set as yet.

Wendover Youth Centre are sad to announce that our Lead Youth Worker and Centre Manager, Pete Swinford, will be leaving at the end of this academic year to relocate to the southwest.
Pete began working for the Centre in early 2020. He kept the Centre going through the Covid pandemic, which only a handful of youth centres managed to achieve, with a mixture of Zoom calls, quizzes and film evenings. Since then, Pete and his team of sessional youth workers have grown the Centre to the success it is today. We run seven weekly sessions including craft, sport, art and baking and currently engage with up to 150 young people each week.
The Trustees, staff and young people would like to thank Pete for all the work and time he has put into the Centre over the last three years and wish him every success and happiness. We will all miss him.

We are now in the process of hiring a new youth worker. If anyone is interested please contact admin@wendoveryouth.co.uk for a full job description.

If your child/ren are interested in attending our youth activities or have any questions/queries, please email admin@wendoveryouth.co.uk
Please follow our social media platforms and visit our website for more information about what the youth centre is doing. Facebook: Wendover Youth Centre Instagram: wendoveryouthcentre

Nash Lee Road and Nash Lee Lane have been closed from the end of May to early June to tie-in temporary diversions to the Nash Lee roundabout. The temporary diversions will become operational once this is complete. This will allow us to continue construction on new permanent road realignments in the area and the HS2 line itself. Access to Nash Lee Lane for residents and Shepherds Hut Nursery will be maintained through the closure.
The temporary diversions include a 55m road bridge to take road users over our site. The Nash Lee Road diversion is to the West of the existing road and on Nash Lee Lane, there will be a new access directly from the roundabout.

In July we have planned overnight closures of Risborough Road to install a further temporary bridge. This prefabricated structure will be lifted over the road in a series of overnight closures. Risborough Road will eventually be closed permanently, and the new Stoke Mandeville relief road will be opened in its place.

As our construction continues to ramp up throughout 2023, we invite you to visit our next ‘Meet the Team’ event. Members of both our construction team and community engagement team will be there to answer any questions you may have around of the works we are carrying out in the area. The Wendover 'Meet the Team' will be on Thursday 15 June from 15:00 – 19:00 in the Jeffcoate Meeting Room on the Lindengate charity site, HP22 6BD.
To stay informed of our works don’t forget to register for email updates on the HS2 website which gives a choice of how you would like to receive information from us. To find out more, visit your community website at www.hs2.org. uk. For questions about HS2 or our works, please contact our HS2 Helpdesk team on 08081 434 434 or email hs2enquiries@hs2.org.uk

The recent BBC Wild Isles Documentary highlighted that the UK is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world and our wildlife is in crisis with a quarter of all mammals at risk of extinction. In this documentary, that is available on iPlayer, Sir David Attenborough reiterates that 'We now have a few short years during which we can still make a choice. Where just enough remains of the natural world for it to recover. This starts and ends with us'.
If you are keen to get involved, then one of the best places to start your journey is to visit the BBC website www.bbc.co.uk. From here, you can explore lots of ways to get involved.
At Home – make your garden or balcony wildlife friendly by providing food, water and shelter. Embrace organic gardening practices to preserve beneficial insects and pollinators.

At School – Schools and colleges can play a key role in saving our wild isles by making schoolgrounds a haven for wildlife and inspiring the next generation of nature champions. Get started and act for nature with free tools and resources from WWF and RSPB.
In their first major campaign together, WWF, the RSPB and the National Trust are calling for an immediate end to the destruction of UK Nature and urgent action for its recovery. Saving our Wild Isles is an urgent call to action for all of us, and everyone has a part to play in reversing the harm done to nature over the last two centuries.

In Your Community – You can sign up to the Climate Action Wendover Newsletter on our website www.climateactionwendover.org to learn about local projects and volunteer to help out with tree planting and our food forest project.

So, let’s all take action now, and together we can save our Wild Isles.
