Cover Story We were lucky enough to be sent some amazing photos by the RSPB and we want to tell you a bit about the talent behind the lens, so would like to introduce you to Tom Mason... “At 21 I’m a pro wildlife and nature photographer based in Hertfordshire, I spend a large amount of time both at Rye Meads as well as around the county, including St Albans. I’ve been a photographer since the age of 11 and after leaving school after my A levels I made a drastic decision to ditch my Uni Place and go and do what I’d always wanted - become a wildlife photographer! Three years on I have been lucky enough to travel to some amazing places, Latvia, Serbia and Peru and have worked with some truly amazing species. I love working close to home here in Hertfordshire, spending a large amount of time on the farm where I live, photographing Foxes, Hares and just about anything and everything... My work has been published in a range of magazines, including BBC Wildlife, Practical Photography, Nikon Owner as well as appearing in the national press. I’m a columnist for Wild Planet Photography magazine and a regular blogger for Wex Photographic as well as the RSPB. I give a number of talks and lectures for various societies about wildlife photography... but more than anything, I’m just completely over the moon that every day I do what I love for a living! If I’m not working I’m often out enjoying and watching nature, I also still find time to help run a wildlife explorers group at Rye Meads, in addition to a number of other volunteer roles too, everything from education to guided walks!” Tom Mason Twitter: @TomMasonPhoto www.tommasonphoto.com

A special antiques and collectables valuation event will be taking place in Harpenden this month. The experts of Lockdales Auctioneers will be providing free valuations on Wednesday 8th April, 11.30am-3.30pm at The Park Hall, Leyton Rd, Harpenden. Valuations can be provided on various types of collectables including Coins, Stamps, Medals and Militaria, Antiques, Clocks and Jewellery (see adjacent advert for a more extensive list). No appointment necessary. Members of the public will have the option, if they wish, to consign their goods to auction (subject to terms and conditions). Cash purchase offers are also available. Valuations will be provided free of charge, with no obligation. These valuation days have proven to be very popular in the past, and we have conducted hundreds of them across the UK. Some of the best items we have auctioned were brought to us at these events, such as two pieces of Russian 17th century enamelled silverware, a bowl and a lidded pot, which we sold on behalf of the owners for over £75,000. One of the most interesting items we have sold recently was a fragment of pennant flag belonging to the army of Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth. This was featured on TV and in newspapers nationwide. Its owners brought it along to one of our valuation events! We sold it for them for £2800 in one of our auctions. I’m a great fan of home grown vegetables, particularly as growing my own allows me to eat only organically grown produce. It is important to use large containers, as most vegetables need an evenly moist compost around their roots at all times. They need to be placed in a sunny spot as vegetables won’t crop well in a gloomy position. Growing bags will do but they don’t look great and often contain poor compost and when it comes to keeping them watered, they’re nothing short of a nightmare. Large flower pots or planters are best, make sure they have drainage holes, with a layer of broken pots at the bottom. Use either a standard multi-purpose or loam based compost, and if required add some controlled release fertiliser granules or feed regularly with a liquid feed. Various vegetables can be grown in containers but sometimes getting the right variety can make all the difference to how well they perform. Check labels for those suited to being grown in a pot. If you like home grown beans use any variety of dwarf French bean or the miniature runner, ‘Hestia’ which has pretty red and white flowers and doesn’t need a support to climb. Cucumbers can be grown in pots; choose a variety such as ‘Patio Pick’ which should crop well despite its size. Provided you have a large and deep container then courgettes are also worth a try, and remember to keep them well fed. If you like hot peppers and have a sheltered, warm spot try the crazy looking, ‘Medusa’ or the pretty but hot ‘Etna’. For some really wacky colour try the rich-red stemmed ‘Ruby Chard’ or ‘Bright Lights Chard’ with stems in pink, orange, red, yellow and white. Remember that anything grown in pots needs more TLC as its roots will not be able to tap into the further reaches of the soil to find moisture and nutrients. Plenty of food and water is a must, liquid tomato feed works a treat. To keep your pots free from slugs and snails, try using sticky-backed copper tape stuck in a complete ring around the top of the pots. Once everything is growing well, don’t forget to pick your veg regularly if you want the plants to keep cropping. Happy Gardening Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com

The Herons are Back! The herons have started to gather again on ‘heron Island’ in Verulamium Park. The RSPB volunteer group will be there every weekend until 4th May, including Easter in the same place as last year, overlooking the lake just along from the Fighting Cocks pub. There will be telescopes to help you get a close up look at the breeding birds and their newborns! You’ll be able to ask the experts about wildlife in and around Verulamium Park. Timings are subject to change but should be between 10.30am and 4.30pm weather permitting! picture by Stuart Harrison
