Giant Incinerator Planned 2 Miles from Harpenden Stop the Harpenden and Luton Incinerator (SHLI) is fighting to STOP CGEP's planning application to build a giant incinerator plant on green belt land owned by the Luton Hoo estate, situated on the Lower Harpenden Road at East Hyde. JUST 2 MILES FROM CENTRAL HARPENDEN This will have an impact on you because:  CO2 and NOx is released 24/7  HGVs will be visiting the site every 2.5 minutes for 11 hours a day  The building will be as long as Harpenden High Street, with a 100 metre high chimney  We will become the Nation’s dumping ground.  All Hertfordshire’s landfill waste would be burnt in 5 weeks, the other 47 weeks of the year it would burn waste from around and outside the UK  The River Lea and its unique chalk stream will run beneath, through and alongside sewage, landfill and pollutants before reaching your local park There are 40 schools within a 5 mile radius of the proposed incinerator, not to mention: smell, light, flora, fauna, noise.... You can help the fight by: • Joining our emailing list, visit www.shli.org.uk • Emailing and/or writing to your MP and contacting local and national officials • Telling your friends and putting it on social media • Volunteering to help

Why NOT to leave your dog in a hot car! Dogs’ extreme sensitivity to heat means that even if you leave the windows open and provide water, their wellbeing is at serious risk. Heatstroke occurs when a dog is unable to cool itself down. Excessive panting and red gums are signs of overheating, but if you see a dog that’s also vomiting or displays a lack of coordination, you need to act quickly.

What to do in the case of heatstroke  Contact a vet straight away  Offer them cool water in small amounts as

cold water can send a dog into shock  Move them into the shade  Wrap them in cool damp cloths,

particularly their head

Keep them cool  Make sure they have access to clean water at

all times and carry water and a bowl with you on walks  On hot days, walk your dog in the cooler parts of the day, in the early morning and late evening  Make ice cubes with your dog’s favourite food inside or stuff a Kong and pop it in the freezer

Why are dogs so sensitive to heat? Dogs are not able to release heat through their skin as humans do, they cool down by panting, and via their nose and the pads on their feet. As a result, irreparable damage to internal organs occurs very quickly when they overheat, and many dogs do not recover. Short-nosed breeds including pugs and bulldogs are particularly susceptible to heat stroke, as are overweight dogs. Even on a cloudy day, they may struggle to cool themselves down. So never leave your dog alone in a car on a hot day and if you see a dog in distress in a hot car, don’t be afraid to dial 999. The RSPCA have no powers to break into a vehicle and would need police assistance at such an incident. The police will inform the RSPCA if animal welfare assistance is required.

July marked the 150th anniversary of the start of passenger services from St Albans station to London on the former Midland railway line. For most of the mid-1860s thousands of workers, called navvies, were employed constructing the railway on what had been green fields at the eastern end of the town. The workers lived in huts on site and had their own off licence as well as the nearby newly built Midland Railway Inn (now The Horn) in which to spend their wages. The workers’ encampment was disbanded in 1867 when the contractors put material from 700 workers’ huts up for auction. The goods station at St Albans came into use on 9th March 1868. Passenger services began on 13th July 1868 but terminated at the Metropolitan Railway Company’s Moorgate Station as St Pancras station was still under construction. The formal opening of the line took place on 1st October 1868. A 2nd class return cost 2 shillings and the Government required the railway company provide a number of trains each day with cheap tickets at 1d a mile. There were several fast services into St Pancras, a journey time of 32-34 minutes. Passenger bookings trebled between 1872 - 1901 to just over 140,000 a year.
