Admire the parish church of St Nicholas with its tower dating back to 1470, the site of the village pond that, when filled in, housed a wartime air-raid shelter, and Rothamsted Manor, which was used as a top-secret army intelligence centre intercepting Morse code messages. With so much to see and discover, this guide provides a glimpse into Harpenden of yesteryear.

18th - 22nd Sept As The Hospice of St Francis celebrates its 40th Birthday this year, they are looking to recruit a group of cyclists to make it a year to remember! This iconic London to Paris Cycle will take you from the heart of London through beautiful English villages and into the stunning countryside of rural France before you reach Paris and end your challenge under the Eiffel Tower. A minimum sponsorship of £1,600 covers your transport, accommodation, food and ferry crossing and still leaves at least £800 of much needed funds for the Hospice, which will help local people to live their precious lives well. This open charity challenge event has around one hundred fellow cyclists, so whether you’re an experienced rider looking to put in some mileage or a complete beginner, there are bound to be other cyclists at your level as you pedal to Paris! www.stfrancis.org.uk
