The magazines are back after being away for May and June. You’ll see they are different this month as many places remain closed the event pages are reduced until things return to normal. There are many local businesses who need your support as they get back on their feet, so please think local if you need any work done and have a look through the magazine to see who can help. If you’re interested in advertising, please get in touch, we offer a helpful, friendly service, working hard to make the magazines the best they can be. They’re monthly and if you don’t have a copy handy, you can always find them on Twitter, Facebook or our website. All information was correct at time of going to print but please check any websites before leaving home, as things may change. Stay safe and well

A New Platform for Wine & Beer
Platform Wines, a new independent retailer, launched their brand at the end of last year at Harpenden and Berkhamsted train stations The idea behind it was simple – provide good wine and beer at affordable prices while being in a convenient location. You could grab a bottle on the way home. Perfect! Daniel Blake and James Allsop - the owners of Platform Wines – have spent many hours considering how the business could work and importantly how to connect with their customer base. Since they launched, they have run free tasting events every few weeks, bringing their product direct to the consumer. During “Dry January” they even provided alcohol free beer. The business was just finding its feet and improving the service they provided by responding to customer feedback when the global pandemic hit. Like many independent businesses, Platform Wines were hit hard by the restrictions put in place. Much of the business is a result of footfall through the train stations, and with travel restrictions and closures in place, they had to think fast and adapt to keep their business from failing so early in its lifetime. They quickly setup an online delivery service – if the customer couldn’t come to them, they would go to the customer. Not an easy task by any means. They had to begin their days earlier to ensure deliveries got to the right houses, while making sure each customer got exactly what they ordered – beer cans in particular can be tricky as they like to roll in to hard-to-find places. Throughout all this, they have still been expanding their range and have just launched a 5 litre keg selection. They have also partnered with BerkoBeerFest to offer online beer tasting events that customers can sign up for. A selection of beers will be delivered to your house for you to participate in a tasting session led by a professional. It’s clear to see how challenging the last several weeks have been, but Daniel and James insist it has been extremely rewarding. They have been touched by the support from the local community who have got behind them in the hope of seeing this new business succeed. The feedback has been nothing short of brilliant and they have been nicknamed by some as “The Beer Fairy”. It’s not every day you start a new business venture, and it’s certainly not everyday you can say you successfully ran it during a pandemic! Discover Your Family’s Wild Side
Walks & More Luton Hoo Estate The bees at Luton Hoo Estate make wonderful honey which is sold in the garden shop, with all the money from sales going back into the Walled Garden Volunteer Project. Why not visit and support this worthwhile cause once things return to ‘normal’ Can You Help a Bee in Trouble? Don't forget bees can sting so... Bee Careful - Bee Patient - Bee Kind If you think a bee might be struggling it’s okay to 'feed' him a spoon of sugary water to get him back on his feet. If the bee recovers remove the sugar water. Don’t leave sugar water out, only use in emergencies. Don’t feed honey to bees as it can make them sick and they could take the sickness back to the colony. Don’t pick up bees, they are delicate and their stings really hurt. Leave out small bowls of water with gravel in the bottom so they can use them as rest stops in hot weather. Why not plant bee friendly plants, such as Pussy Willow, Lavender, Abelia, Mahonia, Apple Trees, Hawthorn and Honeysuckle. Most bees are female. A bee can fly 800k in its lifetime. Bees tell each other directions to good sources of pollen by dancing. Identify the Trees on your Daily Walk How many trees can you see and do you know what they are? Collect a leaf from each one and identify them using the chart on the website, where there are lots more activities too, why not have a look! www.lutonhooestate.co.uk
Visit Heartwood Forest Although close contact with people isn't recommended, you can still enjoy a beautiful woodland walk.
Walking There are three great way-marked trails to follow: Wildlife Wander - an easy 4k walk through ancient woodland and wildflower meadows. Magical Meander - an easy 2.4k walk through the Magical Wood – the perfect stop for families. Heartwood Hike - an easy 4.3km walk through Langley Wood - famous for its bluebells in spring.

Nature-loving families can have fun in the Magical Wood which is growing every day and will be a great new natural playground when fully grown. Follow the Family Discovery Trail around this 50-acre woodland and let the kids discover their wild side.
Uncover Ancient Woodland Heartwood Forest is made up of four woods – Langley Wood, Pismire Spring, Well and Pudler’s Wood, and Round Wood. In summer, mature broadleaf trees provide dappled shade for unique plants and wildlife. But be careful where you tread as any misstep could mean there are less bluebells next year.
Spot Birds and Butterflies Volunteers are monitoring populations of plants and wildlife and have recorded more than 80 species of birds and 29 species of butterfly at Heartwood. Look for nest boxes designed to encourage barn owls, tawny owls and kestrels and listen to the wonderful variety of bird song. Watch out for the bird watching spots and hints and tips along the way. www.heartwood.woodlandtrust.org.uk

Coast and countryside car parks are starting to open as well as a small number of gardens and parklands. Sadly not everywhere can open at once, but the Trust is working hard to open more places as soon as possible. All houses remain closed for now. The Trust will continue to add new places to book each Friday, so if your local place isn’t showing as open yet, please keep checking the website.
