Claydon House In the 1750s Ralph Verney set out to create a country house of extraordinary grandeur that would dazzle his wealthy neighbours and outdo his political rivals. Thirty years on he was facing financial ruin. Today the interiors that remain are among the most ambitious and lavish ever created in the 18th century. Claydon has been occupied by the Verney family for more than 550 years; the place is a testament to their fascinating fluctuating fortunes, from their close involvement in the English Civil War to the family connection with Florence Nightingale.

Year of the Allium 2016 is the Year of the Allium, like exclamation marks, alliums stand out from other plants, adding emphasis wherever they’re grown. Most allium flowers have a long, leafless stalk topped with a globe-like bloom that’s made up of a cluster of individual florets. The blooms are odorless until crushed, when they release strong sulfur-based chemicals emitting a volatile odor and bitter taste. Of the 800 species, just a few are edible: leeks, shallots, garlic, and chives are the most common. The most popular ornamental alliums are the big-headed ones such as ‘Gladiator’ and ‘Globemaster’. Alliums offer so many different flower sizes, heights and bloom times, that it’s easy to incorporate them into almost any sort of garden or landscape. Plant a variety of different species to enjoy a succession of blooms all season long.

10th - 12th & 14th - 18th June Underdog five-a-side football team Barely Athletic doesn’t seem to have what it takes to win, despite the urgings of head coach Viv. Will the (largely) gay side ever get their hands on that trophy? But in the face of mounting defeat, something far more important is happening to the team. A deliciously funny and heartfelt play from one of the most promising new playwrights around. Zero by Rachel Ruth Kelly 25th June 8pm Popcorn Productions presents this blistering one woman show sitting on the knife-edge between dark and funny, exposing the uncompromising reality of a young woman on the brink of adulthood. Words just sort of ‘happen’ for Beth and before you know it she’s just said everything and she can’t put the words back in her mouth. Turning 21, lighting a cigarette, and trying to forget. Feeling Sporty

Be Inspired - Get Active Summer’s here and it’s time for women and girls to dust off their trainers, renew any New Year resolutions and think about getting more active. That’s where This Girl Can in Herts Week can help with loads of inspiration through a vast range of local, female friendly and focussed activities. This event follows on from last October’s hugely successful week where around 2,600 women and girls took part in the 275 sessions across the county. Of these, 1,100 were new to that activity, taking part in buggy fit, burlesque fitness, squash, sailing, bootcamps and cricket, to name just a few. This year it promises to be even bigger and better with lots of sports clubs and organisations opening up their doors to women and girls with taster sessions, open days, workshops, courses and competitions, with a variety of sports and activities to try such as yoga, karate cycling, back to netball and many more. Why not get involved just checkout the website for local events.

Bike Week 11th - 19th June Bike Week is an annual opportunity to promote cycling, and show how it can easily become part of daily life by encouraging ‘everyday cycling for everyone’. Demonstrating its social, health and environmental benefits, the week aims to get people to give cycling a go, whether for fun, as a means of getting to work, school, the shops or just to visit friends. Events take place in June but others are planned for the rest of the year. This year’s focus is to encourage people to cycle to work. Many people will use the events to ride and take part in ‘buddy’ rides with colleagues, work out the easiest route to work or take part in work place challenges. 5 Miles to Fabulous - This Girl Can 11th June 9.30am Women-only easy-pace ride using traffic-free routes and quieter roads with a coffee stop. Hold a Strawberry Tea during June, July or August and help support people facing breast cancer. Whether it’s you and a few friends in the garden, a family tea party or even a strawberry bake sale at your work or school, it’s a great excuse to get together and make a massive difference. When someone is diagnosed with breast cancer, every bit of their life can change forever. Whether you do it to say ‘thank you’, in memory of someone or just in the name of summery fun, every penny raised will help Breast Cancer Care support more families through one of the most difficult challenges they will ever face. £10 could give 10 people the information they need to face treatment and make vital decisions about their care. £55 could help a younger woman feel less isolated by attending a course with expert information, support and a space to connect with others with the same diagnosis. Raspberry Pavlova Roulade This roulade is easy and always looks great and was made for my show by pastry expert Simon Northcott with Nutella filling and topped with hazelnuts. I’ve made mine fruity, so a slice qualifies as 1 of your 5 a day! For the nutty version, replace the raspberries with 2 tablespoons of Nutella and top with chopped nuts. For the meringue: For the filling: 3 large egg whites 300ml double or whipping cream 175g white caster sugar 200g raspberries 1⁄2 tsp vanilla extract Icing sugar, to dust 1⁄2 tsp white wine vinegar grated chocolate to decorate 1 tsp cornflour Pre-heat the oven to 80C/Gas Mark 4. Line a rectangular swiss roll tin with baking parchment and stick down with butter. In a large, grease-free mixing bowl, whisk the egg whites to soft peaks. While whisking, slowly add the caster sugar until you have a stiff, glossy meringue mixture. Whisk in the vanilla extract, followed by the vinegar and cornflour. Pour the mixture into the baking tin. Leave a gap around the edges to stop the meringue sticking and smooth over with a knife. Bake for 15 minutes or until the meringue is a light golden colour but still soft on the inside. Remove from the oven and leave to cool. Take another sheet of baking parchment, and turn the meringue over onto it and pull away the parchment it was baked on. Whip the cream to soft peaks and fold in the raspberries, allowing some to crush a little. Spread evenly over the cooled roulade and roll up tightly, with the longest edge closest to you, leaving the paper behind as you go. Put the roulade on your serving plate, seam down. Serve immediately or firm it up for an hour in the fridge. Dust with icing sugar and grated chocolate.
