The Spy Who Got Away It began in 1894 when a French agent working as a cleaner at the German embassy in Paris found an incriminating document in a wastepaper basket, which suggested there was a spy in the French army. Suspicion soon fell on Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish officer in the French army. Dreyfus was found guilty of treason at a secret court martial and publicly stripped of his military rank. He was sentenced to life on Devil’s Island.

himself commented they had given him his freedom, but not his honour. It was not until 1906 that he was finally declared innocent and allowed to rejoin the army.

But what of the real spy and why did he do it? Charles Esterhazy was of Hungarian descent and an army officer. He was a gambler, and in debt. And according to one ex-lover, he hated France But not everyone was convinced of his and was contemptuous of guilt. His family demanded to see the evidence the French army. As for Dreyfus his only crime against him as none had been produced at the was to be Jewish at a time of strong anti-semitism trial. But the authorities refused, claiming the in France. For the French government to have evidence was secret. An army officer, Colonel admitted they had made a mistake would have put Picquart noticed that the incriminating document the army in the dock and perhaps have risked a was not in Dreyfus’ handwriting but that of military coup. Esterhazy (pictured). When he attempted to raise So they protected the very man who had spied on this he was sent abroad. However, he sent his them. However, there are those who think evidence to Dreyfus’ lawyers who campaigned for Esterhazy was a double agent, which might also Esterhazy to be brought to trial. He was cleared and fled to England. This London, and moved to Harpenden in 1909 where prompted writer, Emile Zola to send an open letter he lived at various addresses under a variety of to the President of the Republic, which began aliases. His final home was in Milton Road, where “J’accuse” accusing the government of antihe used the name Count De Voilemont. Under pressure the government now produced some of the ‘secret’ evidence. But this was exposed as a forgery and the officer responsible committed suicide. By now the rest of the world was convinced of Dreyfus’ innocence, but still the French authorities insisted he was guilty. Eventually in 1899 Dreyfus was tried a second time and found guilty, but pardoned. As Dreyfus

His real identity was only revealed in August 1923 by ‘The Spectator’. Harpenden in Bloom ‘Hearing Dogs for Deaf People’ is a charity that trains dogs to assist people with hearing impairment, by alerting them to everyday sounds at home, such as the telephone, doorbell and, most importantly the smoke alarm. Puppies start their training at about 8 weeks old. They live in the home of a volunteer socialiser for 9 months, before moving to specialist Training Centres, to learn about the soundwork and eventual placement with a deaf person. The socialiser’s role is twofold. Firstly to train them in obedience and good behaviour, they will attend local fortnightly training sessions, and learn to walk to heel, sit, stay, come when called, as well as stamping out bad habits such as jumping up and excessive barking. The puppies will work for their Kennel Club Obedience awards - most of them reach the top 3 star level. The other role prepares them for their life as a Hearing Dog, by exposing them to as many everyday experiences as possible and to help them cope. Hearing Dogs, like all Assistance Dogs are allowed to go everywhere with their owners: supermarkets, restaurants, public transport, even hospitals and doctors’ surgeries, but the distractions are many and it’s important that the dogs can cope without becoming stressed or over excited. The Charity breeds its own puppies (in the hands of volunteers) and uses mainly Labradors and Labrador Retrievers, Spaniels and Poodles plus crossbreeds such as Cockerpoos and Springadors. At the end of the socialisation period, the puppy is returned to the Training Centre for advanced training, a wrench for the puppy to go, but there’s always another one ready and waiting for its first step on the journey to becoming a fully qualified Hearing Dog. Sun 18th May 12.30pm Come and meet Hearing Dogs with their owners and see puppies in training with their socialisers at the St Stephens Parish Festival, Greenwood Park, Tippendell Lane, St Albans

It can’t be a pet, farm animal, captive animal or plant. Judges will be looking for originality, creativity, innovation and photographs which capture life and energy. Winning photographs will be displayed at the Harpenden Common Discovery Day in June. Deadline 2nd June Best Front and Back Garden Best Public House Display The judges are looking for gardens that stand out in terms of impact and presentation, colour and design, variety and appropriate use of plants, innovation and sustainability. Realistic Revision For Students (and Parents!) This month, thousands of students will start study leave in preparation for exams. Ideally, they’ve been revising as they go, so their parents are confident they’re well prepared. But in reality, students and parents may be panicking; how do they structure all this ‘free’ time and how much revision is enough? So here are some study leave survival tips:

Students Plan Check the time, date, structure and content of your exams. Check revision books before purchase, ensuring they’re specific to your course, there are often several versions, each focusing on a different examining board, topic or text. Make a realistic timetable. Vary subjects throughout the day and week, and concentrate initially on subjects with the earliest exam dates. Factor in commitments, longer breaks and unfinished work. Revise somewhere without distractions, remove your mobile, turn off the TV and laptop (or block social media sites). Pace your work, allowing for unexpected delays and particularly tough topics. Organise Collate everything on each topic in one place. Have a specific target for each session, ‘I’ll revise osmosis’ is woolly, but ‘I’ll summarise osmosis down to 1 A4 page’ ensures you’re achieving a measurable outcome. Keep sessions to around 30 minutes then take a short break. After four or five sessions, have a longer break for lunch or watching TV. Tips for Better Revision Passive reading does not work. Effective revision is active; you must engage with the material. Here’s how: Note-taking helps you to focus and make sense of your reading in words and ways you understand, and it’s great revision in itself. Reducing notes to a card or A4 page makes them portable and easily digestible. Use colours, highlighting, underlining, tables, patterned notes, bullet points, mind maps or diagrams. Why? Read on.

28

Engage Your Senses You’re far more likely to visualise that fluorescent spider diagram you did, with underlined keywords, than to a closely written page of one-colour, linear notes. Try using post-it notes in eye-catching places, or make ‘washing lines’ across your room. Make good use of your ears too, record key phrases and equations; march around first whispering facts, then increasing volume until you’re shouting. Use helpers Revising with friends can be more fun and help you fill gaps or understand tricky topics. Make question cards and ask parents or friends to play Trivial Pursuit with you. Practice answering exam format questions Gather relevant facts and write an outline for essay answers, or design a multiple-choice quiz. Beware the Internet Stick to reputable websites with contributions from teachers, e.g. BBC’s Bitesize.

Parents Be interested and positive ensure nagging isn’t your only input, and don’t impose your own anxieties and ambitions; they have their own. Don’t compare them to others. Listen to their worries and reassure them that exams are important, but not the end of everything; your affection isn’t dependent on exam results. Don’t expect them to work every waking hour brains need time to sort and assimilate information. Ensure they get enough rest and relaxation. Be an active helper Test them, play quiz games or time their practice runs. Pre-arrange an ‘end of exams’ treat Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk

NOW in the Garden

Be creative with containers May is the ideal time to plant up your summer windowboxes and containers to create sparkling patios and courtyards brimming with colour. Be adventurous and plant shrubs, ornamental grasses, soft fruit and herbs, together with annual bedding plants, for displays that stand out from the crowd. And remember that if your chosen plants are tender, plant them out mid-month when all risk of frost has passed.

How to plant a patio pot Firstly, choose a container with a drainage hole in the bottom. Add some broken terracotta or polystyrene

40

pieces to the base, followed by a layer of multipurpose compost. Place your tallest plant at the back or in the centre – dahlias, fuchsias, hebes, standard bay trees, and ornamental millet (Pennisetum) are all good choices for your centrepiece. Then fill the gaps with shorter annuals and trailing plants, such as petunias, verbena, nasturtiums, bidens, and bacopa. I also like to add small herbs, including thyme and marjoram, into the mix. Fill around the rootballs with compost mixed with slow release fertilizer granules, such as Miracle Gro All Purpose Continuous Release Plant Food, and firm gently, leaving a gap of at least 3-5cm (1-2in) between the top of the compost and pot rim to allow space for watering. Place your containers on ‘pot feet’, which raise them off the ground, ensuring good drainage, and keep your pots well watered from spring till autumn.

Windowboxes with the ‘wow’ factor Plant windowboxes using the same method as for pots, and choose the largest containers you can fit on your sills, which will offer the maximum space for plants and the most spectacular displays. Those used here are pelargoniums (syn geraniums), petunias, bacopa, dwarf snap dragons and a strawberry plant. by Zia Allaway Learn more about creating beautiful containers at Zia’s Gardening Workshops in Harpenden.
