Bark Busters offer helpful tips to keep your dog safe on bonfire night and during storms Lynn Prentice Bark Busters’ behavioural therapist for Herts and Essex encourages dog owners to take extra care of their pets around bonfire night. “Bonfire night is traditionally a time of celebration and fun,” says Lynn, “but for animals it is quite a different story. Many dogs are literally sent into a frenzy of terror when fireworks explode. Many will run madly in a blind panic causing damage or worse still running out into the path of oncoming cars. Some lose control of their bodily functions, while others will bark or howl.” Although we cannot totally remove the fear that fireworks and storms cause, we can help our dogs to feel secure. some helpful tips to remember If you are going to a fireworks display, leave your dog at home where he will be safe and comfortable. Never leave him in the car, the bang of the exploding fireworks can be amplified in a car and could frighten your dog even more. Always keep proper identification securely fastened to your dog’s collar in case he gets out. Ask your vet about implanting a microchip and make sure your contact details are up to date. Don’t leave your dog outside. If you cannot bring him inside, cover his kennel with a blanket to protect him from the bursts of bright lights and loud bangs. A dog’s sense of hearing is acute, over 10 times more sensitive than ours.
16
Dogs should be given a small, dark space so they can run and hide when the “fun” starts. Some like to hide in cupboards or under the bed. Some dogs become destructive when frightened and anxious. If you don’t use a crate, remove any items in the room which your dog could destroy or which could harm him when chewed. Turn on a TV or radio at normal volume to distract your dog from loud noises and help him relax. If possible, stay with your pet during the fireworks, your dog may react more intensely to loud sounds and flashes of light when you are not with him. In extreme circumstances your vet may be able to suggest a remedy that suits your particular dog. Lynn Prentice Bark Busters

lest we forget Remembrance Day and the Two Minute Silence have been observed since the end of the First World War, but their relevance remains undiminished. When we bow our heads in reflection, we remember those who fought for our freedom during the two World Wars. But we also mourn and honour those who have lost their lives in more recent conflicts. Today, with troops on duty in Afghanistan and other trouble spots around the world, Remembrance, and this two minute tribute is as important as ever. Services will be held across the district on Remembrance Sunday 11th November. The services will give the opportunity to remember and reflect on the lives of service men and women who have given their lives defending our country and our freedom, 'lest we forget'.
Sunday 11th November War Memorial, Church Green, Harpenden 10.50am A parade from The Royal British Legion in Leyton Road, Harpenden to the War Memorial at Church Green in the centre of town, will leave the Legion at 10.40am. At 10.50am a service will be held at the Memorial Cross attended by The Harpenden Town Mayor and representatives from the armed forces, cubs, scouts, guides, explorers and marchers from other organisations. Parishioners attending the High Street Methodist Church for the usual 10.30am service will also be asked to make their way to the Memorial Cross as part of the service. War Memorial, St Peter's Street, St Albans 10.20am The Mayor and the Macebearer will gather outside Marks and Spencer in St Peter's Street from 10am. They will lead the procession to the War Memorial near St Peter's Church where the Remembrance Service will be held. Walk: Street War Memorials 11am St Albans Tour Guides will lead a walk visiting each of the memorials and telling the story behind some of the names. a significant find A nationally significant find of 159 late Roman gold coins was discovered in the north of St Albans in October The find is believed to be one of the largest ever discovered in the UK and dates to the end of Roman rule in Britain. The coins, called solidus were mostly struck in the Italian cities of Milan and Ravenna and issued under the Emperors Gratian, Valentinian, Theodosius, Arcadius and Honorius. David Thorold, Prehistory to Medieval Curator at Verulamium Museum in St Albans said: “During the period of the Roman occupation of Britain, coins were usually buried for two reasons. As religious sacrifice to the Gods or as a secure store of wealth, with the aim of later recovery. Threat of war or raids might lead to burial in the latter case, as may the prospect of a long journey or any other risky activity. Gold solidi were extremely valuable coins and were not traded or exchanged on a regular basis. They would have been used for large transactions such as buying land or goods by the shipload.” Talk: The Roman Gold Coins Hoard, Verulamium Museum, St Albans For those wishing to find out more, a talk has been planned for Thursday 1st November at 7pm call the museum for tickets £7 on 01727 751810 or museums@stalbans.gov.uk

Once again we will be holding our Annual Bookfair at St Albans Town Hall. Starting in late October and open 7 days a week until the 2nd January. Over many years the Bookfair has become part of the St Albans calendar with thousands of books at greatly reduced prices. This year it will feature many subjects from travel and history to art and science, and one of the largest areas will be devoted to children’s books. Recently published books featured in our local section will include a photographic book ‘St Albans Through Time’ by Robert Bard and a fascinating book about the River Ver by Jacqui BanfieldTaylor. Greeting cards, calendars and other stationery will also be available. We originally opened our shop in St Albans in October 1962, so this Bookfair marks fifty years of us selling books in St Albans! Although we had to close our Holywell Hill shop in 2007, the

I think that it still works so well because we are able to use our long standing trade contacts, to carefully source many of the most interesting books available to sell at remarkably low prices. Our customers also like the fact that the books are displayed in the 1831 Regency Courtroom. For some it can bring back memories; one customer told us that it had been over 50 years since he had been in the old Courtroom. Apparently during the cement shortage of the late 1950’s, he was one of 76 local builders appearing in court for loading more bags of cement onto their van than they had paid for! When I asked him if he would be interested in revisiting the cells below the Courtroom he didn’t seem very keen! We look forward to welcoming back our many regular customers and to meeting some new ones this year. www.stalbansbookfair.co.uk Richard Child, Paton Books, St Albans
