Light up a Life Rennie Grove Hospice Care will be holding Light up a Life ceremonies in November and December and is inviting anyone who has lost a loved one to share this time of remembrance by dedicating a light and/or attending a service. You can dedicate a light that will shine on Christmas trees at the ceremonies and make a donation in the name of a lost loved one. Each dedication is acknowledged with a commemorative card and added to Rennie Grove’s Memory web page. Peter Brion lost his wife Margaret to cancer 12 years ago after almost 60 years together. “I support Rennie Grove because of the way they looked after Margaret. The care they gave was fantastic. I can’t champion them enough. The whole process from writing the dedication, making the donation and attending the service helps me at what can be a difficult time of year.” Local Services 26th Nov 3pm - Grove House, Waverley Road, St Albans 10th Dec 4pm - Clock Tower, St Albans (part of the Mayor’s Carol Service) www.renniegrove.org

Stand Up to Bullying Wear blue and show your support for anti-bullying on 10th November

Harpenden Writers is a friendly mix of interested writers varying in age and experience, some of whom have published in books or magazines, while others attend for the pleasure of sharing their writing, and exchanging ideas. They meet once a month with programmes that range from visiting speakers, to workshops and ‘readarounds’ when members enjoy listening to each other’s work and, if requested, contributing helpful suggestions and criticisms. On 3rd November the group will launch an anthology of poetry and prose - The Words - to celebrate their 20th anniversary. The contents are as varied as the contributors, and it will be available from harpendenwriters.com and Lulu.com Terry Jones of Ver Poets writes of The Words: “Memory, so closely allied to writing, is the substance and driving force of much in these pages. All of us as we mature carry a larger and larger knapsack on our back and the contents of that bag are our lives, the things we have witnessed and experienced. Writing explores and illuminates all of that ‘stuff’. The reader will find some splendid factual writing, reportage of events – some of which took place a while ago. But equally there is writing about incidents which are barely out of the newspapers or digital media, which are tinged with emotional engagement. Expect pleasure in these pages but also some pain. There are laughs along the way too.” New members are welcome, the group meets on the first Friday morning of each month, except August. www.harpendenwriters.com

As we all know the effects of bullying can have a massive impact on anyone, whether at school, work, college or socially. Bullying UK, part of Family Lives, works all year round on anti-bullying campaigns, and provides support to those who are experiencing bullying. Why not get your school or workplace involved and help raise money for Bullying UK so that those affected can continue to be supported. No matter how big or small, your donation will make a huge difference. Bullying UK will be running their successful ‘wear blue’ campaign for the third year and are asking schools, organisations and individuals to wear blue and donate to this very worthwhile organisation. If you would like to be a part of the ‘wear blue’ campaign, please register for updates and further information by visiting www.bullying.co.uk

Jerusalem by Jez Butterworth 10th - 12th & 14th - 18th Nov Performed by the Company of Ten Johnny ‘Rooster’ Byron, local waster and modern day Pied Piper, is a wanted man. Council officials want to serve him an eviction notice, a thug wants to give him a serious kicking and his mates want to get their hands on his drugs stash. So begins Johnny’s stand against the hypocrisy of modern life – which proves to be funny and shocking in equal turns. Warning: this is a funny and shocking play with strong language. Sticky Chicken Drumsticks 8 chicken drumsticks 3 tbsp soy sauce 2 tbsp honey 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp Dijon mustard Mix together all ingredients, apart from the chicken, in a jar, pop the lid on and give it a good shake. Put the chicken drumsticks in a large bowl and pour over the marinade; toss to ensure that they are covered. Cover and leave in the fridge for at least 1 hour. Give them a shake every now and then to make sure they soak up the flavours. Tip the drumsticks and marinade into a roasting tin and pop into a preheated oven at 180°C. Roast for 35 minutes, turning occasionally. Serve with the marinade from the tin poured over the top.

Roasted Pork Belly in Rich Tomato Sauce 1 tsp paprika 1 tbsp olive oil Handful of bay leaves 1.2kg belly pork 2 red onions (peeled and cubed) 2 sweet potatoes (peeled and cubed) 4 garlic cloves (peeled and finely chopped) 1 large red chilli (cut into quarters length ways) 1 tbsp red wine vinegar 1 tin chopped tomatoes 300ml passata 150ml water 2 sprigs of rosemary (leaves only) Preheat the oven to 200°C. Place the meat on top of the vegetables. Roast for 45 minutes. Remove the meat add the vinegar, tomatoes, passata and water to the vegetables stirring well, pop the meat back on top. Reduce the oven temperature to 170°C and roast for another hour. Remove from the oven and sprinkle the rosemary leaves into the sauce. Cook for a final 20 minutes. Winter’s Heart Andrew James Johnson is a composer and pianist who lives with his family in St Albans. Despite having no formal piano training Andrew immersed himself in the works of Beethoven, Schumann and Chopin as a child, eventually pursuing his dream of studying composition in London. His style combines harmonic language with expansive pianistic techniques, revealing the influence of the Romantic-era composers that dominated the soundtrack of his youth. His album ‘Winter’s Heart’ will be released on 17th November. facebook AJJohnsonmusic twitter ajjohnsonmusic www.andrewjamesjohnson.co.uk

Lea Singers Chants and Psalms 11th Nov 7.30pm From the most simple melodies and the oldest words comes an evening of strikingly 'modern' choral music performed by local chamber choir the Lea Singers. Gregorian melodies and chant texts are the starting point for a journey through musical traditions from Europe and America that make connections between music ancient and modern. Psalm 100 connects Schütz's dance-like Jauchzet dem Herren with Bernstein's exuberant, lyrical and bluesy Chichester Psalms, which are in turn connected to Roxanna Panufnik's Love Endureth, a setting of Psalm 136, by text sung in Hebrew. The centrepiece of the concert is Duruflé's Requiem, which uses Gregorian chant as a starting point for the composer's own imaginative musical inventions. £15, concs £10 07881 785299 tickets@leasingers.co.uk St John’s Church, Harpenden AL5 1DJ

My daughter Mollie has played football since she was ten. While clearing out her cupboards we found lots of football boots, goalie gloves, shin pads and shirts that are now too small for her, so decided to donate them to KitAid. We were amazed at the amount of kit being sorted out by volunteers that had been donated by clubs and individuals. Mollies bag of football boots was immediately added to the boxes being loaded up to be shipped to Gambia. After the session a total of 202 boxes and sports bags had been packed, amounting to 7,070 items of kit. This increases the overall total since 1998 to 453,570, meaning KitAid is on the last hurdle to reach half a million in time for their 20th Anniversary in July 2018. The kit is destined for Somalia, South Africa, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe, Gambia and Romania. If you’re thinking of donating unwanted football kit please email Derrick Williams MBE at kitaidcharity@gmail.com to find out when the next local session is being held, or for further information please visit www.kitaid.net
