St John’s Church then and now Did you know there used to be an orchard where St John’s Church now stands? The current church was built in 1907/08 on orchard land given by Sir Charles Lawes-Wittewronge, son of Sir John Lawes, when the previous St John’s Church burnt to the ground on 31st December 1905. The old church was situated on the corner of Crabtree Lane and Southdown Road and was nicknamed “The Paper Church” due to its flimsy construction. It only lasted 10 years before the disastrous fire. After the fire, the people of Harpenden were determined this should not happen again, and the substantial and well-designed current St John’s Church was constructed after a great deal of enthusiastic fund raising. The foundation stone (pictured) was laid in July 1907. What is left of the old orchard of a century ago? One gnarled old apple tree is still there in the vicarage front garden as a reminder of its history. So it seems only fitting that St John’s will be appreciating apples in many ways at its Autumn Fayre on Saturday 4th October at a time traditionally associated with celebrating the bountiful harvest. Come and sample the homemade apple and cinnamon cake, apple chutney and giant-lollipop-like chocolate dipped apples! There will also be traditional games, competitions, raffles and stalls to make a really enjoyable time for all the family!

NOW for a Good Read No-one knows what the future holds, but here are a few interesting books to get you thinking about what might lie ahead. Divergent Veronica Roth Life is generally considered to be confusing enough for teenagers, but in Veronica Roth’s vision of the future, society has become fragmented into five factions of virtue, and all sixteen year olds must choose that which they want to devote their lives to

preserving. Tris needs to make a decision about who to trust and whether or not to leave her family and follow her own path. Then there’s a new love interest, but she’s not sure whether he will protect her or ultimately destroy her. Once the brutality of the initiation is over, is it all worth it and is Tris following the right path? Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Philip K Dick Basis for Ridley Scott’s film Blade Runner. Bounty hunter Rick Deckard is preying on, and ‘retiring’ androids that have short but murderous lifespans, in order to pay his own bills and keep his depressed wife buoyant. In a parallel life, John Isidore is trying to conserve and protect the androids. In this postapocalyptic world, most animals have been destroyed by the effects of radiation and the scarcity and cost of owning one is where the title comes from. The novel asks all kinds of questions about human emotions and, most importantly empathy. It’s an amazing and intriguing thriller. Brave New World Aldous Huxley In Huxley’s vision of the future, everyone’s free to take recreational drugs and be as promiscuous as they

like. Who wouldn’t want to exist in such a utopia? The World Controllers have created the ideal living situation but, true to form, there’s always one who isn’t happy. It’s just all a bit too good. Bernard Marx is searching for imperfections, unconvinced that this contrived society is really making people as happy as they appear. He visits one of the so-called Savage Reservations to try and cure his restlessness. A future story that makes us question the present is always a goodie and shows us why this novel has stood the test of time. 2001: A Space Odyssey Arthur C Clarke Next time your computer won’t do what you want it to, spare a thought for the crew of the Discovery, who’ve been tasked with finding out why a mysterious monolith found on the Moon, is sending a signal out to Saturn. Their electronic friend is HAL 9000, who seems to have developed feelings and self-awareness, but also slightly murderous tendencies. If you thought space was scary enough, imagine being under the control of a digital psychopath. It’s science fiction at its most intense.

Widow to get Muddy for Charity 19th October Caroline Atkins, 49, is getting filthy for The Hospice of St Francis in its Mud Pack Challenge as a “personal challenge” following six operations for breast cancer, but also as a thank you to the Hospice, which cared for her late husband Paul. He was just 54 when he died in June, just six weeks after being diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer. “It’s been a huge shock,” says Caroline, from

Harpenden Road. “I miss him so much but the care and support the Hospice gave Paul, me and our family and friends has been phenomenal. Caroline hopes that by doing the Challenge, she and her 17-year-old son James, can help make a difference for other families facing loss. They will be joining 500 other Mud packers as they crawl, scramble and slide their way through the muddy five-mile course at Champneys Spa in Tring. The event will help the Hospice raise the £4.7m needed annually to provide its free care for those with life-shortening illnesses in Herts and Bucks. If you’d like to sponsor Caroline visit www.justgiving.com/caroline-atkins140 Registration closes on 30th September, costs £35 and you will need to raise a minimum of £50 sponsorship. www.stfrancis.org.uk/mupackchallenge

Conifers Conifers are a great way to add colour, texture and living sculpture to your garden 365 days of the year. With hundreds of different ones to choose from there’s one to suit every situation. Dwarf Conifers: These reach a maximum height of 1 metre, are useful for small gardens and will add a great extra dimension to a rock garden or a small-scale border. Recommended: Picea abies ‘Little Gem’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Gnome’ Tall and Narrow: Stunning when used to create a screen, to add height to a border or as a single specimen tree in a lawn. Recommended: Taxus baccata ‘Fastigiata Aurea’ Pyramid-shaped Conifers: Can bring welcome shape, texture and evergreen colour to your garden and are useful to hide an eyesore. Recommended: Picea albertiana ‘Conica’ Spherical Conifers: Naturally produce a sculptured look and are perfect for growing either side of a gateway or entrance, and can look great in a border, adding colour, texture and interest. Recommended: Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Sunset’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Minima Glauca’ Ground-Cover Conifers: Low growing conifers work well for covering steep slopes and edging paths and beds, helping to keep weeds at bay. Recommended: Juniperus squamata ‘Blue Coat’, Juniperus conferata, Juniperus communis ‘Compressa’. Conifer Planting and Growing Tips: Make the planting hole a minimum of 1m wide by 30cm deep and add plenty of garden compost, proprietary planting mix or well-rotted manure.

36

Tease or spread out the roots well, and backfill the hole with garden soil mixed with planting compost. Make sure that only the roots are below the soil surface, water well. Keep the soil moist at all times, especially during late spring and summer. Feed to keep the growth good and ensure it’s a good colour. Trim conifers regularly, as if you cut back into old or brown growth you’ll end up exposing it, which is very unsightly. by Pippa Greenwood

Innovative Goalkeeper Coaching

GK Icon is an innovative goalkeeper coaching experience, aimed to provide enjoyable sessions for goalkeepers of all abilities and age. We strive to provide a service that will improve and test every goalkeeper who attends our sessions. We use new training methods, ideas and equipment, such as the 'visual enhancement training system' and the 'crazy catch' as well as speed ladders and bungee chords amongst other apparatus to make the sessions unique and different from anything you will have ever experienced before. What we can guarantee is that you'll have fun, make new friends and take your game to another level.

I have been going to Gk Icon at Oaklands College since January and the sessions have definitely helped me improve as a player by teaching me key skills and improving my confidence. The coaches have been supportive and encouraging trying out new techniques every week on handling, diving, distribution and kicking. I have met other goalkeeper’s both girls and boys of a similar age, it’s been great sharing experiences and having fun while doing something we love. I would definitely recommend it to current goalkeepers and those looking to try out the position in the future. The sessions are so helpful they make me want to come back again and again!

Stagecoach, a place where students come and stay... ...sometimes for the whole of their school lives. It provides a supportive, friendly environment that allows young people to grow in skill and confidence. Here are just some of the comments from our current and past students and parents; “Kirsty has had such an enjoyable time and loved every minute of every session. She has made some very good friends which we hope will remain with her for a long time to come.” “Your Presentation was absolutely fantastic and we felt SO proud of both the girls.” “Thank you for believing in our daughter when others didn’t - the past 7 years have been an amazing experience for all the family.”

“Stagecoach has given our son confidence and a sense of belonging.” “It was wonderful to see Emma so happy during the Demonstration.” “Our son has so much FUN every weekend!” Stagecoach training is a great foundation for drama school but it is not just for the performing arts. So many students have found that their training has helped them gain the jobs and careers they wanted, inspiring confidence and self-belief. The St Albans and Harpenden schools have a few places available at the beginning of each term and we would love to welcome you very soon! Call or email Mandy or Liz and your child could be enjoying the fun for themselves!
