Charity Donations Please don’t just leave items outside charity shops as it costs them time and money to dispose of them, and much of it is unrecyclable. Most charities are operating an appointment only system, donations are usually quarantined for two days under COVID guidlines. Please help charity shops by finding out if donations are required / saleable, and what the current store policy is on receiving them, just visit the website or call the store to find out. The charity sector has taken a big hit during COVID and needs our best support.

Face Masks - The New Plastic Pollution Discarded face masks are now a common sight. Apart from the potential risk of spreading disease, they also pose a choking hazard to wildlife. The huge increase in the use of single-use plastic gloves and masks will negatively impact the environment. The masks have a polypropylene filter and don’t break down easily, so will end up in landfill and our oceans. Plastic waste dropped on the street gets washed into drains and can enter local rivers, contaminating water with the pathogen. Material reusable masks are a better eco-friendly alternative as long as they are washed after each use. It’s important that we ‘Stay Safe’ but it’s also important that we look after our wildlife and don’t allow our rivers to become contaminated. Please make sure you dispose of masks and gloves in bins or take them home. We have made every effort to ensure that any material published in harpenden NOW is correct and can accept no liability for any errors or delays in publication or distribution, harpenden NOW accepts no responsibility for its advertisers.
