National Teen Trust
St Albans parents Patricia Seabright, Kerry Cobb and Wendy Powell formed the ‘National Teen Trust’ for parents of teens and tweens in Hertfordshire, run like the NCT, offering a network of support, advice and the latest psychoeducational theories. Times have changed and parents now need more skills to support our tweens and teens. With reports that young people have increasing mental health issues, the time has come to do what’s not been done before – a training manual for parents – a teen building kit! We’re not alone in the problems we face, so NTT offers and tests practical theories in a warm, safe, fun environment. Courses so far have received positive feedback and have proved enlightening! One participant said: “Recently, I attended a parenting course with the NTT - it was a course like no other.... I finally realised I am not alone!! It was good knowing that other parents go through similar issues to mine. It was the first time I started to understand what is going on in the teens’ brain.... it's like a messy bedroom. Kerry explained it beautifully. It was a great day, I met some fantastic mums - I highly recommend it if you're interested in having a happy home life” Kerry, an NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming) practitioner and former drama teacher, says “I noticed during the transition from primary to secondary school that I needed help with the change from parenting a child to parenting a tween and didn’t want to sit in a draughty hall thinking I’d done something wrong. I’ve studied brain development and communication theories and now share how extra tools in our kit can help our relationships.”

Harpenden’s Story
A new book telling ‘The Story of Harpenden - from Village to Town’, written by local author Jean Gardner, a resident of the town for forty years, has been published by Harpenden Local History Society. The book traces the fascinating history of the local area from Iron Age times, revealed in archaeological excavations, through the Roman occupation of Britain and the following Saxon period. It records the establishment, in 1656, of Harpenden, formerly ‘Herpedene’ as a separate parish from that of its older neighbour Wheathampstead. The book priced £3, is available from Harpenden Books and News4U. Copies can also be ordered online at www.harpenden-history.org

Harpenden Lipreading Classes Lipreaders Hear Better! Did you know that one in six people in this country have some kind of hearing problem? Hearing loss can affect anyone of any age. Hearing aids have improved enormously, they are now mini computers, but even the best don't cure hearing loss. It’s still a problem to hear in noisy social or work environments, but all is not lost. Lipreading classes teach you to let your eyes help your ears fill in the things you miss. The very best thing you can do to help yourself if you discover you are having problems hearing, is to join a lipreading class, although classes are few and far between, in Harpenden we now have two classes. My name is Molly Berry, and I am profoundly deaf, I started losing my hearing when I was in my thirties, and 7 years ago I was given a Cochlear Implant. It was very successful, and so I decided to retrain as a lipreading tutor to pass on the skills I relied on. Classes are enormous fun, we laugh a lot, and as well as lipreading I explain audio-grams, we look at equipment that can help, and strategies to help in all sorts of situations. The classes are on Tuesday mornings and evenings. The new term starts in September. Do come and join us. We would love to meet you. Email me at mb.lipreading@gmail.com or call or text 07741 095921
