Valuation Days
Cover Story We were lucky enough to be sent some amazing photos by the RSPB and we want to tell you a bit about the talent behind the lens, so would like to introduce you to Tom Mason... “At 21 I’m a pro wildlife and nature photographer based in Hertfordshire, I spend a large amount of time both at Rye Meads as well as around the county, including St Albans. I’ve been a photographer since the age of 11 and after leaving school after my A levels I made a drastic decision to ditch my Uni Place and go and do what I’d always wanted - become a wildlife photographer! Three years on I have been lucky enough to travel to some amazing places, Latvia, Serbia and Peru and have worked with some truly amazing species. I love working close to home here in Hertfordshire, spending a large amount of time on the farm where I live, photographing Foxes, Hares and just about anything and everything... My work has been published in a range of magazines, including BBC Wildlife, Practical Photography, Nikon Owner as well as appearing in the national press. I’m a columnist for Wild Planet Photography magazine and a regular blogger for Wex Photographic as well as the RSPB. I give a number of talks and lectures for various societies about wildlife photography... but more than anything, I’m just completely over the moon that every day I do what I love for a living! If I’m not working I’m often out enjoying and watching nature, I also still find time to help run a wildlife explorers group at Rye Meads, in addition to a number of other volunteer roles too, everything from education to guided walks!” Tom Mason Twitter: @TomMasonPhoto www.tommasonphoto.com

A special antiques and collectables valuation event will be taking place in Harpenden this month. The experts of Lockdales Auctioneers will be providing free valuations on Wednesday 8th April, 11.30am-3.30pm at The Park Hall, Leyton Rd, Harpenden. Valuations can be provided on various types of collectables including Coins, Stamps, Medals and Militaria, Antiques, Clocks and Jewellery (see adjacent advert for a more extensive list). No appointment necessary. Members of the public will have the option, if they wish, to consign their goods to auction (subject to terms and conditions). Cash purchase offers are also available. Valuations will be provided free of charge, with no obligation. These valuation days have proven to be very popular in the past, and we have conducted hundreds of them across the UK. Some of the best items we have auctioned were brought to us at these events, such as two pieces of Russian 17th century enamelled silverware, a bowl and a lidded pot, which we sold on behalf of the owners for over £75,000. One of the most interesting items we have sold recently was a fragment of pennant flag belonging to the army of Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth. This was featured on TV and in newspapers nationwide. Its owners brought it along to one of our valuation events! We sold it for them for £2800 in one of our auctions. Any questions call 01473 627110, email sales@lockdales.com or see our website www.lockdales.com

The Shires 27th April 7.30pm Bedford Corn Exchange Ben Earle and Crissie Rhodes have swiftly become one of the real buzz bands of 2014. Hailing from Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire, and with only a handful of live dates under their belt, The Shires signed to Decca just before they made their official live London debut at the second annual Country 2 Country Festival at London’s 02 Arena. What a Kinder Surprise! Two students from St Albans Theatretrain - Zac Pile, 9 and his 12 year old brother Finley are “over the moon” after being chosen to appear in the new advert for Kinder, the chocolate/toy company. Finn (who goes to Sandringham School) and Zac (at Bernards Heath Primary) were contacted by Goldmans Management (the Theatretrain affiliated talent agency) to audition for Kinder Pingue chocolate. All they knew was that they were to play two brothers building an igloo! They went to the Spotlight casting venue in Leicester Square, and having got through the initial audition were asked to return for the final selection. Finn said the best bit of the audition was “meeting the Director and working with another actor”, while Zac said he “liked being filmed and using proper props - like real chocolate!”

...celebrates the fantastic walking opportunities our county has to offer. The aim is to inspire and motivate people to walk more, whether for exercise, to explore the countryside or simply to get from A to B. Hertfordshire boasts 3,200 km of Rights of Way, 42 open spaces with Green Flag status, and miles of accessible disused railway lines and towpaths, just waiting to be explored on foot. To find out more visit www.hertsdirect.org/walking where you can also pledge to walk more in 2015. A list of walks and other outdoor events can be found at www.hertsdirect.org/walksandmore
