The Hygiene Bank has launched in Harpenden and St Albans to help alleviate some of the impacts of poverty. For many struggling families, especially those relying on food banks, hygiene is a luxury they can’t afford. “Long before people go to a food bank, they stop buying toiletries”. In Harpenden, Crabtree School held the first Hygiene Bank collection in March and collected 144kg of donations. After watching ‘I Daniel Blake’, founder, Lizzy Hall, became aware that toiletries were rarely donated at food banks, so after a plea to her friends on WhatsApp, donations flooded in and within a few weeks The Hygiene Bank was born. A survey by the charity, Plan International UK found that one in ten girls/women aged 14 to 21 in Britain can’t afford sanitary towels or tampons. The Hygiene Bank encourages the community to donate new and unopened toiletries and essential beauty/grooming products via collection boxes in retailers, service providers and public services. Members of the public are also encouraged to be collectors for their office, colleagues, friends and family, church, sporting groups, book clubs, scouts/guides etc. Since the first WhatsApp appeal The Hygiene Bank has given out over 3 tonnes of products including 2000 sanitary items.
