‘putting up the Christmas’
8th December 3pm

In the past it was often only on the 22nd December that people in Hertfordshire would “put up the Christmas” which meant decorating their homes with evergreens such as holly. The Christmas tree was made popular by Prince Albert and Queen Victoria. But it took some time for the custom to become wide spread. In ‘Cottage Life in a Hertfordshire Village’ Edwin Grey recalled how the labourers’ cottages in the Bowling Alley part of Harpenden were decorated in the 1870’s. Most used sprigs of holly and other evergreens. Pieces of holly with berries were placed in the window frame and on the ledge. Candles were also used to decorate the cottages. These were often arranged in a row on the mantelpiece. Then at the appointed hour, the ordinary light would be extinguished, and the Christmas candles lit. And to mark the occasion, special sweets, cake or food were eaten. However, some labourers used a well shaped

branch of fir or holly as a substitute tree. This would be decorated with small coloured candles. There might be some sugar mice and possible a few small toys. Other decorations included apples and oranges. And instead of a fairy there would be a small Union Jack or Father Christmas on the top of the tree. Edwin’s uncle was a gardener and he had a small fir tree, adorned with candles, fruit and flags. There were also homemade decorations in the form of ‘Dorothy bags’ small bags made by of coloured silk and filled with nuts or sweets. Finally the tree was festooned with ropes of scarlet holly berries which were threaded onto long lengths of thread. While very pretty they must have taken a extremely long time to make! party perfect make-up
16
Don’t hold back this Christmas, gorgeous hair and make-up is essential for any social gathering, and it’s the finishing touches that make you look really special. Porcelain skin, flushed cheeks, berry stained lips and defined eyes make fabulous make-up. Embracing your natural complexion and choosing a foundation shade that’s close to it can give you a really classy finish. Use a primer first, then apply a covering foundation with a brush. Choose a lightreflecting loose powder to apply on top for a radiant glow to set your base. Stay away from glitter, because it shows up every line and isn’t flattering unless you’re a teenager. Sculpt cheekbones by applying blusher in a dusky pink. Smile as you apply it, to see the apples of your cheeks and sweep upwards and outwards. Next, lightly define your eyes. Use a neutral eye shadow across the lids and brow bone, then a light brown in the socket, and a deeper brown in the far corner. Brush your brows into shape, and pluck away any stray hairs emphasising them with a hint of colour. Use a brow powder to add definition and finish with a slick of gel. Use a black liquid liner to line your top lid, extending out to create a small flick. When dry curl your eyelashes and apply mascara. Use a soft black eye-pencil under your eye, and black liner on the inner rim for a smoky look. Use a lip liner in a shade that compliments your lipstick, using a lip brush, apply your lipstick. Choose a berry-red for instant glamour and finish with a dab of gloss in the centre of your lips for a really full look. Remember, Christmas comes but once a year, so enjoy every minute. by Helen Taylor

some foods can be harmful Many festive foods can be harmful and toxic to dogs, including fatty or spicy foods, breads and dough, fresh herbs and sweets of all kinds, especially those with chocolate or artificial sweeteners. Particularly dangerous are cooked bones as they can easily splinter and the bone shards can cause choking or get stuck in their gums. Instead, give them ‘dog bones’ . While a little taste of turkey can make them happy, don’t overdo it, too much of a good thing can make them sick. decorations are not playthings Keep your pet away from plants, many of which are poisonous, such as holly, mistletoe, poinsettias and amaryllis. Also keep electrical wires and batteries out of their reach, chewing or biting anything electrical can cause shock or burns. Chewing batteries can cause the acid to leak and obviously don’t leave lighted candles unattended. Christmas trees can be hazardous Secure the tree to the ceiling or wall to prevent it from tipping over. Hang nonbreakable ornaments near the bottom of the tree so that delicate paws don't get hurt and regularly sweep up fallen pine needles. help your dog feel safe and relaxed Help your dog feel calmer by exercising him prior to the festivities and don't forget to keep their bowl filled with plenty of fresh water. please don’t give a pet as a surprise gift! A cute puppy might seem like the perfect gift choice, but many end up at rescue centres. Owning a dog takes a genuine commitment of time, responsibility, training and exercise. Following these simple tips will help make the festivities safe and happy for your whole family, including our much loved canine companions.

After a Boxing Day walk to work off the excesses of Christmas Day why not use the leftovers to make these unusual recipes. The first a tasty alternative for leftover turkey, a French favourite Pithivier Pie or for Christmas Pudding leftovers try making ice cream to serve as a light dessert for New Years Day!
turkey pithivier pie
50g / 2oz mayonnaise 300g / 12oz cooked turkey, diced 750g / 1½lb puff pastry (a mix of light and dark meat is great for flavour) 1 egg, beaten 1 medium onion, chopped 50g / 2oz cooking oil 125g / 5oz cream cheese 1 tbsp chopped herbs 75g / 3oz cooked stuffing, crumbled (parsley, thyme or tarragon are great with turkey) 75g / 3oz cranberry sauce salt and pepper 2-3 sticks of celery, finely sliced 50g / 2oz walnuts, chopped If cooking on the day pre-heat the oven at 200c / 180f / gas mark 6. In a frying pan gently sauté the onion and celery until just softened. Allow to cool slightly. In a large mixing bowl combine all other ingredients, when cool add the onion and celery mix. If the mix seems quite thick add a little more mayonnaise, being careful not to make it too wet. Once the mixture is ready place a large baking tray into the oven to warm slightly; this will help the base crisp up. Meanwhile on a floured surface roll out slightly less than half the pastry into a large round, you can use a dinner plate to get an exact shape. Place the turkey mix onto the pastry base leaving a good 2cm / 1 inch around the edge for sealing. Remove the baking tray from the oven; gently slide the Pithivier onto the sheet. Roll out the rest of the pastry to at least 2cm / 1 inch larger than the first disc, brush the edge of the base with beaten egg, carefully place the lid on top and press the edges together to seal. Cut a small hole in the top of the Pithivier to let out steam when cooking, you can decorate the top as you wish. Place in the oven for 30 - 40minutes or when the top is golden brown, serve with potatoes and vegetables or salad. The Pithivier can be frozen on a cold baking tray, for a month. Defrost slowly then cook as above, but add an extra 10 minutes to ensure the base is crisp, if the top is getting too brown cover with foil.
Christmas pudding ice-cream 4 medium eggs, separated 100g / 4oz cranberries, fresh or frozen 100g / 4oz caster sugar 100g satsuma segments 100 -150g / 4-6oz cooked Christmas pudding, crumbled 50g / 2oz caster sugar 2 tblsp brandy or orange liqueur 75ml / 3floz water 300ml / ½ pint double cream Whisk the egg yolks and sugar until pale and fluffy. Add the Christmas pudding and liqueur. Whisk the cream to soft peaks and add to the mixture. Whisk the egg white to stiff peaks and add to the mix. Transfer to a lidded container and freeze for a minimum of 6 hours before using. To make the sauce place the cranberries and satsuma’s in a saucepan, add the caster sugar and water. Heat gently until a syrup forms stirring occasionally but try to break the segments and berries up. Drizzle over the ice cream, this sauce can be hot or cold.

laugh out loud If you’re fed up with your Uncle Jack’s unfunny oneliners this Christmas, why not retreat to a quiet corner and find a bit of comic relief away from the relatives. From classic cats to depressed rabbits, we have enough Christmas cheer to keep you laughing well into the New Year. The Far Side Gallery 1 by Gary Larson
If there’s any doubt that Gary Larson is some kind of comic genius, it was dispelled when they built a museum in San Francisco and filled it with his cartoons. Seeing the world through Larson’s eyes is viewing it through a pair of Dame Edna-style glasses. He finds the funny in the ordinary and I guarantee you’ll never look at cows and chickens in quite the same way again. The Far Side books can be passed from grandparents to parents to children and all will be equally tickled by Larson’s humour. Simon’s Cat Vs The World by Simon Tofield Not since Garfield has a cartoon cat so captured the nation’s heart. Simon’s cat spends his days terrorising and tormenting his longsuffering owner but this time, it’s the puss that’s under threat. With a new kitten on the scene, Simon’s Cat is facing a power-struggle of a magnitude he’s never known before. Forget fighting dead flies…this time it’s war. Life-long
34
cat fan Tofield has had years of feline experience, and it shows. The new cartoons are full of pure moggy magic. The Best of “Punch” Cartoons by Helen Walasek
‘Punch’ magazine may have closed its doors in 2002 but its legendary status lives on. This is the biggest collection of Punch cartoons ever and it’s one to be savoured. It’s essential reading for all fans of humour and satire, with no holds barred and nowhere safe to hide. The selection was made by Helen Walasek of the Punch Cartoon Library and it’s definitely to be treasured. With 600 of the best to flick through, you’d better avoid doing it in one sitting, or you might end up Punch drunk! The Best of Matt 2012 by Matthew Pritchett
Looking back over the last twelve months, you would expect cartoons on the Olympics, the
Diamond Jubilee, the recession and everything else inbetween. This multi award-winning cartoonist captures the spirit of the nation in his own inimitable way. It’s a subtle mixture of wit and satire that will have you chuckling into your pudding. His almost haphazard drawing style is quirky and suggestive, making you feel like he’s capturing British life on the fly. A brilliant way to look back over the year. The Book of Bunny Suicides by Andy Riley Poor bunny. Here we are, taking pleasure in his impending pain. It sounds terribly fiendish and it’s definitely not for Peter Rabbit fans but Riley’s cartoons somehow manage to maintain a touch of innocence in the macabre. The premise is simple and yet Bunny’s plans to end his days become more and more elaborate and ingenious as the book goes on. It brings new meaning to the phrase ‘not a happy bunny’. I guarantee that you’ll laugh out loud.
Spe cial Editio n
Garfield Going for Gold by Jim Davis
Timed to coincide with London 2012, this special edition is one of the classic sports strips. He may have been around since the 70s but Davis’ furry anti-hero hasn’t grown out of taunting his owner with violence towards his canine counterpart, Odie and of laziness, gluttony, sarcasm and a hatred of Mondays. You gotta love a cat like that.

winter planters
Even if you’re sure you’re not going to venture out into your garden much in the colder months, make sure you have every possible encouragement by creating a winter planter or two. A pretty planter on the front steps or gracing the patio will not only look gorgeous from the warm comfort of the house, but will also help to coax you outside from time to time. Grab a container, some compost and a selection of plants and be creative. Larger is better, as once temperatures drop a larger container is more likely to protect the roots on the plants due to the greater volume of compost. Frozen roots are fatal, so this is really worth bearing in mind. Avoid any container less than 30cm (12in) diameter if possible. Remember that summer bedding displays can be pulled out now, so you can always re-use suitable containers once the plants have been cleared. Any container will insulate the roots a little, but one made from thick wood (such as a wooden trough or window box, or a half-barrel) will be very effective. Good quality, fairy chunky plastic also works quite well. Try to avoid metal as this tends to conduct cold. Warm undergarments are all the rage for winter planters. A lining of bubble-wrap polythene or even a few layers of old fabric or carpet,
38
sandwiched between the sides of the container and the compost will help to keep both compost and roots warm. I always save packaging materials from parcels for this sort of thing; why not pull out the bubble-wrap inner lining from a large padded envelope and use that? Ideally position winter planters out of the windiest areas. If possible place them fairly close to a house wall on the south or west side as this will help to provide a little extra warmth. A visit to your local nursery or garden centre at this time of year should fill you with inspiration, you’ll be amazed at the range of plants available for adding winter colour and interest to pots and planters. Some of my favourites are the universal or other winter flowering pansies or even hardier smaller flowered violas. For some seriously sturdy winter colour, try the winter flowering heathers as these make a good base for the display and you can, if you wish, add trailing plants such as variegated ivies to help provide extra colour, texture and interesting leaf shapes. All these plants will last for years, not just the winter months. At this time of year you are likely to find many garden centres offer very tiny versions of shrubs such as skimmias, pieris or hollies and many of the dwarf conifers. Although these obviously have the potential to grow considerably larger, they will provide good colour and interest in a container for a year or two and can then be planted out into the garden and allowed to reach their full size. In warmer areas, you will also be able to add bright patches of colour to your display using the ‘winter cherry’ or solanum which has bright yellow and orange fruits and also many of the polyanthus whose super-sized, primrose-like flowers come in a wide range of really showy colours. You could also use a few winter flowering cyclamen but these definitely need a very sheltered spot such as a window box on a protected wall. Finally, don’t forget to prolong the time which the planter will look gorgeous by adding in a few early spring flowering bulbs such as miniature narcissus, crocus and miniature iris. There are many different forms, colours and shapes of all these bulbs available and if hidden beneath the roots of your winter bedding plants, you will forget they are there until they burst out in spring and produce a lovely flush of fresh, pretty colour and often some delightful perfume too. Schedule time to clear out any old toys, de-clutter kitchen cupboards and defrost the freezer to make space for the Christmas food.
•
Focus on preparing rooms that people will occupy, such as living and dining areas, the bathroom and guest bedroom. Remember your
guests are there to see you and not a perfect house! Consider sleeping arrangements, additional seating, crockery and cutlery. Get out your Christmas decorations in late November and check for breakages. Make a note if you need to buy any extra items. Before you start packing away your decorations, the key is to label everything so you know what and where items are. make a gift list Include family, friends and those small gifts you need for school and work. Decide how much you want to spend per gift then go online and get researching! Compare prices, make an action plan and decide which gifts you’re going to buy. It’s also handy to keep a list of ideas that others can buy for your family should they ask. Also, buy a few back-up gifts that are quirky-yetpersonal, just in case! make a greetings list Make a contact list for cards and greetings which can easily be updated. This can include Christmas Cards, phone calls and e-mails. food and drink Start menu planning well in advance and place orders for food and drink early. It’s also good to look out for original ideas on how to use leftovers and keep guests well fed. looking your best With all the planning it’s easy to forget about yourself. Plan what you’re going to wear on Christmas Day and book hair and beauty appointments. need a helping hand?
