07789 961233

Containerised Trees Thoroughly water the compost and place a saucer under the pot. Keep the tree inside for a short a time as possible. Put the tree in a frost free place to re-acclimatise before planting out, building a wind breakaround it would also be beneficial. Cut Trees Store your Christmas tree in a cool, frost free place, ideally lying flat. Saw off 5cms from the bottom of the trunk. Place in a bucket of water for a long drink, to pump up the needles for a fuller looking tree and help to reduce needle drop. Either plant your tree firmly in a pot of moist sand with a saucer underneath or fix into a Christmas tree stand with an integral reservoir, and top up water level regularly. Place in a cool position away from heat sources and out of draughts. Don’t bring your tree in too early as it will only be at its best for 10-14 days. Recycling After Christmas make sure you recycle your tree and cards.

NOW for a Christmas Read Struggling to find the perfect book to give as a gift? Or wondering what to add to your own wish list? Maybe we can help… The Hidden People Alison Littlewood Crime, fantasy and historical fiction are melded together in The Hidden People. Albie Mirralls is every bit the sensible, upstanding gentleman that Victorian society wants him to be. When his cousin, Lizzie, is burnt as a changeling, Albie travels from London to her village to see justice done. But when Albie’s own wife seems so completely changed, he finds himself questioning whether there could be some truth to the rumours about his cousin. The perfect book for curling up with on a winter’s night. The Girl Who Saved Christmas Matt Haig Magic is starting to fade in Victorian England, and Amelia might be the only one who can save the day. (Santa being a bit tied up with reindeers falling from the sky, angry trolls and other mishaps.) While it’s the sequel to children’s bestseller A Boy Called Christmas, it stands up perfectly well on its own. An ideal gift for children aged 7 and over, this is really an enjoyable read. You might even find yourself borrowing it back! A Christmas Kiss Vicky Pattison 24 year old Amber dreams of designing her own fashion line. But after a year of working as a general dogsbody for the Queen of Fashion, Diana Grant, that dream is looking increasingly unachievable. So when an opening comes up working with a leading fashion house, Amber jumps at the opportunity. With a new job and a new love, Amber’s life is looking up, but is she in danger of getting caught up in the glitzy world of fashion? Warm and funny, this is a great romantic comedy to enjoy over a glass of prosecco. Buzz Books 2016: Fall/Winter Download Buzz Books for free from Amazon, and read excerpts from 40 of this season’s new releases. Well-known and debut writers are included, across both fiction and non-fiction. With a wide range of genres, there will be something for all tastes. Think of it as browsing in a bookshop, only with more time to read and sample the books at home.

‘Deliciousandreal’ Festive Food Bejewelled Salad With the jewel like colours of the pomegranate and figs, this salad is perfect for any festive table. It’s quick and easy to prepare and tastes amazing. If you don’t like (or can’t source) figs, peaches and nectarines work just as well; as do other leaves, such as pea shoots and watercress or baby spinach. Serves 4 90g wild rocket 4 ripe figs cut into wedges 80g Parma ham (or similar) 50g pecorino shavings (or similar) 2 tbsp of snipped chives 60g pomegranate seeds 1 tbsp pomegranate molasses 2 tbsp lemon juice 1 tbsp olive oil Arrange the rocket and figs on a platter. Tear over the Parma ham. Add the pecorino, chives and pomegranate seeds. Whisk together the pomegranate molasses, lemon juice and olive oil and drizzle over the salad. Finish off with some freshly ground pepper.

Tear and Share Christmas Tree This simple Christmas recipe looks and tastes great, and is a fantastic addition to any Festive table. 2 sheets of puff pastry (can use ready made) Jar of pesto Grated parmesan 1 egg, beaten Place one sheet of pastry on a lined baking tray. Spread a layer of pesto over the pastry. Sprinkle with a thin layer of parmesan. Lay the second sheet of pastry on top and cut out a simple Christmas tree shape using as much of the pastry as you can. Cut strips along the sides of your tree, and twist them to make the branches. Boxing Day The play performed by St Albans Mummers at 5 different locations in St Albans City Centre is a none-too-serious drama of life, death and resurrection with several battles, some cures unknown to medical science, poetry of less-thanShakespeare quality and some very bad jokes. The play also features the Lord of Misrule, the Queen of Egypt, a Giant, a Turkish Knight, a Doctor and old Father Christmas taking a day off after his seasonal labours. Come along and support this traditional Boxing Day custom which started in 1967 when a group of friends wanted to revive the ancient custom of the mummers play. Today’s play is the same as it was then but every performance is different as the players include topical material and interact with the audiences.
