NOW in the Garden It may not feel like it, but Spring is fast approaching. Planting options are limited this month but there is plenty of pruning to be done to prepare your garden for the new season. Planting Raspberry canes, bare root strawberry plants and blackberries can be planted now as long as the soil isn't waterlogged or frozen. Trees, shrubs, hedging plants and climbers can continue to be planted this month in warmer soil. It is best to plant snowdrops and winter aconites in the green (towards the end of their flowering period but while they are still in leaf). Established deciduous trees and shrubs can be moved this month if soil conditions are suitable. Pruning Pruning is the focus this month. Summer flowering deciduous shrubs that flower on new wood can be pruned between February and March; this includes Buddleja, Hydrangea, Perovskia and hardy Fuchsias. Cut back Wisteria side shoots to two or three

6

buds but try not to cut off any flower buds. Late summer and autumn flowering Clematis can be cut back to the lowest pair of strong buds. Spring flowering shrubs, on the other hand, shouldn't be pruned until flowering has ceased and tender evergreen shrubs should be left until April. Winter flowering Jasmine can also be pruned once the flowers are over. Deciduous ornamental grasses and other perennials left for winter interest can now be pruned. Carry on deadheading winter Pansies and other winter bedding. Pansies will continue flowering into the Spring if regularly pruned. After pruning apply mulch and feed for the forthcoming growing season. General Maintenance Remove any weeds from beds, mulch light soils this month with organic matter. Heavier soils should be left until the soil warms. Later on this month prepare beds and borders for spring with a top dressing of balanced fertiliser. Container plants will also benefit from a fresh layer of compost. If the weather has warmed, pots and tubs may need watering, particularly if they are sheltered from rainfall. Happy Gardening! Tackling Tinnitus Tinnitus Awareness Week 2nd - 8th February The British Tinnitus Association estimates that around 30% of us will experience tinnitus at some point, so it’s important to understand it. It isn’t a disease or illness it’s a condition causing you to hear continuous or occasional noise that isn’t external. It can be a single sound or several; humming, whooshing, whistling, buzzing, ringing or even musical notes. It may seem like it’s in one ear,

20

both, inside your head or impossible to pinpoint. The causes aren’t clear as it’s still not fully understood, but it’s more common in those with hearing loss or ear problems. Normally, your ears send sounds to the brain for processing, but as they can’t tell what’s important, they send unnecessary information too. So your brain filters out background sound, such as traffic noise. Sometimes the brain receives too little information and asks the ear for more. This can cause tinnitus. Things which seem to trigger the process are: Middle ear infections can cause temporary hearing loss and tinnitus, so treat it swiftly Damage to the hair cells in your ear caused by old age, or loud noise (causing hearing loss). Stress and anxiety may make it more noticeable. Don’t panic the noises usually disappear over time or drop to a manageable level. But it’s important to see your GP, who may refer you to the Ear, Nose and Throat and Audiology specialists, who can suggest ways to make it easier to live with. Some coping strategies:  Therapies and Techniques such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), mindfulness or Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT), relaxation, yoga or tai chi can help you tune out tinnitus.  Hearing loss correction hearing aids can improve or eliminate tinnitus.  Sound therapy low-level background noise such as music or natural sounds can help, particularly during quiet periods or when drifting off to sleep.  Exercise will keep you busy and may help you sleep better  Talk about it to someone who understands  Live your life as normally as possible don’t change your life to fit around tinnitus, if you do, it will take on more importance and you may feel more stressed by it.  Get Info and support from British Tinnitus Association 0800 018 0527 www.tinnitus.org.uk Action on Hearing Loss 0808 808 6666 www.actiononhearingloss.org.uk Hearing Link 0300 111 1113 www.hearinglink.org/tinnitus

Jonathon Vernon Smith Consumer Advice Expert advises us on

Buying and Selling Houses the Savvy Way! Anyone who has recently moved will remember the logistical nightmare of buying and selling houses. However, there are some things you can do to make the process easier. Here are my top tips: When you decide you want to move assess the market. Is it a buyers or a seller’s environment? At the moment, property prices in most areas are increasing, which for sellers is great, but means buyers are having to dig deeper into their pockets. In tough economic times, property prices tend to fall which means a savvy buyer can bag a bargain. Always get at least three good, reputable, local agents to value your home. Ask for a sensible price at which to market your property and what they will do to get buyers through the door. Always establish their fee and NEVER agree to pay upfront. Pay their fee on completion and for goodness sake, haggle! If one will market the property for a 1% fee and the others 1.5%, why pay more? Get them to agree to match the other agent’s fee. If they won’t, they’re not hungry enough for their commission and won’t try hard enough to find a buyer. Look at how they market properties on Rightmove and Zoopla to ensure they meet your expectations. Generally it’s better to sell your property before you agree to buy somewhere. Until you know how much you can get for your property, you don’t know how much you can afford to spend. Always employ the services of an independent

30

mortgage advisor with access to all companies and who is prepared to recommend the best mortgage for you and NOT for them. Most estate agents suggest using their own conveyancing solicitor. To me, it’s a conflict of interest (particularly if both the buyer and seller use the same solicitor). You need a legal advisor who is independent and looking out for your interests, not someone under pressure to complete a sale from someone else. My advice is to ask friends and family to recommend a good conveyancing solicitor, and again get a number of quotes for this and never be afraid to haggle. When it comes to making an offer, you will need to again assess the market environment you’re working within. If the market is good and there aren’t many properties available, but lots of buyers competing, then it’s better to go in with a high offer on the basis that marketing of the property ceases immediately. In a falling market, then a cheeky, low offer may just bag you a bargain. One final piece of advice, be open and honest. Sadly property deals in this country can be messy affairs. Be upfront with buyers and vendors and treat them in the way you’d like to be treated. Always ask to meet both parties so they get to know you and find it easier to be transparent too. Happy house hunting!

NOW for a good Here’s a few good books for the Valentines Day that focus on what happens after you and your love have been together for a while. Is there really such a thing as ‘happily ever after’? Happy Reading!

Us - David Nicholls Women marry men thinking they can change them; men marry women hoping they’ll never change. Douglas would be quite happy to grow old and die together, but for Connie, that sentiment means their relationship is already dead in the water. She announces she’s going to pack her bags and leave him, but is persuaded by Douglas to make one final trip together. He’s got a master plan to reignite the spark and is pinning everything on this one holiday. Sounds like a fool-proof plan…

disappointments of our ordinary lives come into question in Haddon’s great novel about one family and the couples within it. George and Jean have been married for decades, but their daughter Katie, divorced, is now getting remarried, to someone who has ‘strangler’s hands’, according to her brother. Jean’s trying to keep her affair under wraps and George has discovered a strange lump or lesion and decides he’s definitely on his last legs. It’s all a bit of a pickle really and a highly amusing game of who’ll end up with whom.

block and back again, several thousand times, perhaps it’s time to move on. Annie’s been playing it safe and settling for Duncan and now she’s getting restless for some of that dramatic love she’s always dreamed of; the kind that sweeps you off your feet. The only trouble is she’s more likely to end up blown off her feet in the windswept Northern town of Gooleness. Does the excitement she craves lie with the American rock star who emails her… or does she need to look elsewhere?

The Children Act Ian McEwan High Court Judge Fiona May presides over family cases, while her own home life is crumbling about her. Her husband’s asked her if they can have an open marriage and it doesn’t go down all that well. When he leaves, she is left questioning her own belief system and what it means to be dignified and respectable. On the work front she’s tackling the case of a teenage boy whose parents won’t permit a medical procedure that could save his life, because of their religious beliefs. She’s struggling to get a grip while her world falls apart around her and it’s truly compelling writing as she battles in the courtroom and on the home front.

Couples John Updike It’s a bit naughty, this one. But it’s a classic, so you can’t be frowned upon for reading it! It focuses on the promiscuous lives of ten couples living in a small Massachusetts town during the 1960s and reading it is like stepping back into the decade of free love and experimentation. It’s full of historic references and mixes fact and fiction incredibly well. The group of married, fairly welloff thirty-something year old couples are taking full advantage of new methods of contraception and more liberal attitudes. Updike’s novel questions whether it’s a new utopian society, or whether they’re actually in a hell of their own making.

The Rosie Project Featuring 39 year old Don Tillman’s ‘Wife Project’: the most scientific approach to finding a missus that you’re ever likely to come across. If you thought eHarmony asked a lot of questions, wait until you fill in Don’s questionnaire. He’s tall, dark and handsome, but he also seems to have undiagnosed Asperger’s Syndrome. This professor of genetics hasn’t found his ‘other half’ and so devises a series of questions designed to filter out the undesirables. Enter Rosie. She’s everything he’s not looking for, and yet she might just be perfect for him. You will fall in love with the frustrating character that is Don Tillman and you’ll be rooting for the old ball and chain to be secured by the end of the novel. Proof there really is someone out there for everyone.

NOW for some Music Bad Manners Fri 20th February 7.30pm Bedford Corn Exchange This promises to be a great night of Ska antics! Bad Manners were at their peak during the late 70s and early 80s, during a period when other ska bands, such as Madness, The Specials, The Beat and The Selecter filled the charts. Bad Manners spent 111 weeks in the UK Singles Chart between 1980 and 1983 and have continued as a worldwide popular touring live act to this day. Some of their most well known hits include "Lip Up Fatty", "Lorraine", "Just A Feeling", "Can Can" and "Special Brew". One of the main reasons for their notoriety was their outlandish huge-tongued and shavenheaded frontman, Buster Bloodvessel. His manic exploits got them banned from Top of the Pops and from Italian TV after he mooned to the audience, after being told that the Pope was watching the show on TV! £20 in advance www.thepadpresent.com

The Live Music Project Sat 28th February April Blue, Oka Vanga, Melodi and Alton Walhberg The Project is run by local music promoter/supporter and community champion, Denise Parsons. If you are interested in volunteering for the event or would like to sign up to perform, please contact Denise at production@trestle.org.uk Trestle Arts Base, St Albans 7.30pm, free entry, suitable for 14+ www.trestle.org.uk

Come and Sing! Sat 21st February Join The Lea Singers, for a ‘Singing Day’ to explore the Mozart Requiem. If you love choral singing, used to sing in a choir but are a bit rusty, or want to find out what it’s like to sing one of the greatest works in the choral repertoire, come along. It promises to be relaxed, sociable and fun and is as much about coffee, cake and the chance to chat to other singers as about learning great music. Singing days generate a real sense of achievement with so much accomplished in just one day. We will spend most of the day rehearsing the Mozart Requiem, then sing it through at the end of the day with professional soloists and piano accompaniment. www.leasingers.co.uk 01707 377029 The Lea Singers will be performing the Mozart Requiem on Saturday 28th March at 7.30pm at St Nicholas Church Harpenden. If coming to sing is not your thing, do come and listen!
