St Albans’ Newest Bike Shop BC Cycles, St Albans’ newest bike shop includes a modern and fully equipped workshop. Joint owners Clive Barnard and Mike Campbell (the “B “ and “C” in BC Cycles) are both keen local cyclists with a declared aim of supporting cycling in the community. Mike had a career in the retail sector, and Clive has been a solicitor in the City for most of his working life. They are embarking on this new venture after much planning and discussion together while pedaling around Hertfordshire lanes and bridle paths over the last few years. “We are both very much aware of how high expectations are of service across a range of industries, and we intend to bring the highest standards of service to the local biking community” said Mike. “We are absolutely committed to making cycling more accessible to everyone; we understand how intimidating a bike shop can seem, and we want to break down those barriers” added Clive. 01727 868698

’Allo ’Allo by Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft Company of Ten 3rd - 5th & 9th - 12th July 8pm 6th July 2.30pm Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft’s play, based on the wildly successful TV series. Set in a Parisian cafe during the Second World War, the story rotates around hapless owner René Artois. And let’s not forget his tone-deaf wife Edith, sexy Yvette Carte-Blanche, leather-clad Herr Flick and – of course – the Fallen Madonna with the Big Boobies. Slapstick, farce and oodles of sexual innuendo. The Odyssey by Ian Jordan Company of Teens 16th - 18th July 8pm The powers that be at Olympus Inc. run a tight ship. Keeping track of these mortals is a tricky business, particularly when the brave Odysseus has irked the gods as he travels home to Ithaca. In a new retelling of the classic tale by Homer, the Company of Teens follow the trials of Odysseus as he battles shipwrecks, monsters and gods to return home to his wife and son. A mixture of modern and classic, this adaptation looks at the fickle nature of the gods and the powerlessness of mortals in a fun and exciting production by a talented group of young actors. Soldiers at a camp in St Albans

Exhibition: Keeping the Home Fires Burning now until 16th November Museum of St Albans, Hatfield Road The exhibition focuses on how the First World War affected St Albans and how the local community pulled together and businesses adapted to life during the war. You can find out how wartime conditions in St Albans compared to life in Germany with the help of contributions from the twin city of Worms. You can read soldiers’ letters to loved ones and find out about the contribution made by St Albans scouts to the war effort. You can also hear recordings of local people recounting how St Albans was taken over by 8,000 soldiers based at training camps in the City. Objects on display include memorial windows from the Folly Chapel in Wheathampstead and an embroidered wall hanging made by soldiers receiving treatment at Napsbury war hospital. There is also a painting of the Second Lieutenant Frederick John Eric Freeman from Harpenden painted by local artist Frank O Salisbury. And the cigarette case the soldier was carrying in his pocket when he was shot during the Battle of the Somme. The Museum will be hosting a series of family events about the First World War throughout the rest of the year, so visit the website to see what else they have planned. www.stalbansmuseums.org.uk

Paintings, Sculpture, Ceramics and More St Albans Summer Art Exhibition Friday 18th - Saturday 26th July 10am - 6pm, free entry Once again members of St Albans Art Society will show a vibrant and varied selection of paintings, sculpture, ceramics and greetings cards for you to enjoy. The Exhibition highlights the visual richness of the city itself with works aimed at the St Albans Trophy. This award is given to the work that best illustrates the character of St Albans in an original way. The 2013 winner was 'Verulamium, Late Spring' by Bridget Tompkins and is featured on this year's poster.

The Outbreak of War War was declared on the 4th August 1914 and immediately there was a flurry of activity in St Albans, as reported by the “Herts Advertiser” on the 8th August. At the Midland Railway Station the sidings were converted to enable the unloading of horses and guns. Horses were still important for transport and the Marquis of Salisbury and local breweries offered horses for the war effort, while others had their horses commandeered. There were problems with food supplies; the local grocers were unable to obtain refined sugar. And the main suppliers of eggs, Austria, Hungary and Russia stopped exporting them. As a result there was panic buying and food hoarding. Meanwhile the local Red Cross group began to make arrangements for the wounded, with Bricket House in Bricket Road to be used as a temporary hospital, if required. Proclamations were posted around the city calling up Reservists and Territorial Forces - four local

14

police constables re-joined their regiments. 1,300 troops on a training exercise in Northumberland were ordered to return and two days later they were in St Albans. Soon their numbers were swollen by the arrival of 8,000 territorials. But such large numbers caused problems. The cesspools could not cope with the added volume of water and filled up quickly. This posed a danger to public health, prompting the Council to extend the sewerage system. And daily collections of refuse were organised for buildings where the soldiers were stationed. The troops were billeted in the local schools, public buildings and empty houses. Private householders were also visited by billeting officers. One woman said the only spare space she had was the door mat. The officer replied “Very well we’ll book two for that!” And this was just in the first few days of war. For the people of St Albans, and the rest of the country, things would never be the same again.

Wide Shallow Gardens Wide, shallow gardens can often feel oppressive due to the prominence of the rear boundary, especially if other properties are visible. We are often asked to redesign such gardens to add the illusion of depth. Adding depth can done in a number of ways, in particular utilising diagonals or curves as the longer it takes the eye to traverse the garden the longer it will appear. Strong shapes work well in shallow gardens so consider diagonally set circles, ellipses, rectangles as well as free form curves. Dividing the garden into diagonally set spaces that are longer than they are wide, skews the viewers perspective and provides interest, both of which divert focus from the rear boundary. Another way to utilise perspective is to make it appear as if the garden narrows towards the rear boundary by the careful placement of planting beds, paths or lawn edges converging towards a focal point such as a structure or tree.

18

With planting the key is to draw the eye to the middle distance and away from the rear boundary. Using specimen plants such as Pieris and Camelia towards the centre of the garden work well to deflect the attention from the rear boundary. Planting fine foliaged plants such as ornamental grasses, for example, Festuca glauca, Anemanthele lessoniana, Carex and Stipa near rear boundary makes it appear to recede into the distance. When it comes to hard landscaping, a simple way to trick the eye is to ensure that paving or decking is set with vertical lines towards the rear boundary as horizontal lines will only serve to make the area look wider. Incorporating these techniques into a design can make the difference between an unappealing plot and an outdoor haven of relaxation. Happy gardening! James Lanwarne Lanwarne Landscapes

NOW for a good read They say that time flies when you’re having fun, but anyone under the age of 18 who has a seemingly endless summer holiday stretching ahead of them will be praying that isn’t the case. Whether you’re spending the summer behind a desk or in a deckchair, these titles will certainly make the minutes and hours pass by, almost in an A Tale for the Time Being Ruth Ozeki

A teenage girl in Tokyo plans to take her own life. Nao is suffering at the hands of bullies, but before she ends it she needs to finish writing the story of her great grandmother, an ancient Buddhist nun. When a Hello Kitty lunchbox washes up on a beach in British Columbia, novelist Ruth finds Nao’s diary, and a new obsession. She believes it to be debris left over from the Japanese tsunami of 2011 and is determined to find out how both Nao and her great grandmother’s stories end. This is a remarkable story linking three women across time and continents. The Time Traveler’s Wife Audrey Niffenegger

Art student Claire first met librarian Henry when she was six and he was thirty-one, and then again when she was twenty-three and he was thirty-one. Henry has Chrono-Displacement Disorder and so lives out his bizarre life leaping between time and space, his ‘clock’ continually resetting, meaning Claire has no idea where

or more specifically, when, the love of her life will reappear again. Though constantly torn apart and then thrown back together again, they try and hold onto some semblance of a normal life; raising their child and holding onto the fact that they found each other at all. It’s a fantastic and heart-wrenching book that will leave you hoping that somehow and somewhere you will be able to catch up with Claire and Henry once again. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time Mark Haddon

Chris doesn’t make for the most likely of detectives in this ‘whodunit’. He’s fifteen years old and he has Asperger’s Syndrome. He likes facts and order, routine and mathematics. He finds social interaction and other human beings an absolute minefield to negotiate. When Chris finds his neighbour’s dog has been murdered he must rise to the challenges that life has thrown at him and take himself out of his comfort zone. The story has been published in a version for adults

and another for children and isn’t, says Haddon, a book about Asperger’s. It’s a story about what it’s like to be on the outside looking in; how different and isolated we can all feel and how varied the human mind is in interpreting what’s going on around us. A Time to Kill John Grisham A ten year old black girl is viciously attacked and assaulted by two drunken white men one night. The town of Clanton, Mississippi is thrown into total chaos by the act of violence and the girl’s father, Carl Lee Hailey, asks a white attorney Jake Brigance for legal advice, wanting to know if he could be acquitted if he kills the two men. Brigance implores Hailey not to do anything stupid, but adds that if it were his daughter…Hailey avenges Tonya’s attack and kills both men leaving Brigance fighting to save both his client and his own skin. This is a legal thriller at its best.

Join the Grove House Midnight Walk Saturday 12th July Join hundreds of people dressed in pink taking part in either a 5 or 10 mile walk around St Albans until the early hours, raising money for Grove House. Art, Music, Food, Fun 4th - 6th July The countdown at Childwickbury has begun as the 2014 Arts Fair fast approaches. The annual celebration of creativity explodes onto the tranquil country estate like a palette of vibrant colours. The mix of art and music blends to create this unique event offering something for everyone. Original art, live music, activities for children, entertainment, fresh food and a licensed bar. Christiane Kubrick, professional artist and creator of The Childwickbury Arts Fair comments: “We are serious about art and the fact we’ve been building on the success of previous fairs for eleven years indicates that an event like ours is well received and respected in Hertfordshire. By presenting art in such a relaxed and pleasurable environment we abandon the stigmas of expensive art galleries and turn original art into something that is truly for everyone. I’m sure that is what people feel when they visit the fair and is why they keep coming back.” So, if you haven’t been before make 2014 the year you try it out, as one visitor said last year “It’s thoroughly enjoyable and refreshingly different”.
