Don't Miss the 29th St Albans International Organ Festival! As you would expect from this prestigious event, many internationally recognised stars will be performing. Talented local artists also feature heavily, including St Albans young piano sensation Julian Trevelyan, Harpenden-based Amici Voices and St Albans Bach Choir. The IOF Fringe offers still further talent with excellent local music, inspirational guests and chances for everyone to join in. Large-scale events at the Cathedral include Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms with the Choirs of St Paul’s Cathedral, Temple Church and St Albans Cathedral, and Handel’s Messiah in the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire’s Charity Concert. The Festival’s programme of solo and ensemble music features renowned artists alongside young up-andcoming performers. Events include late-night performances by candlelight in St Michael’s Church – our most significant Anglo-Saxon building – and free ‘Bach Corner’ lunchtime concerts in St Albans Cathedral. Renowned pianist Barry Douglas will perform Schubert’s D960 Sonata and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition; and Beaumont School will present A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Young People’s Puppet Theatre. At the heart of the Festival are the organ competitions. The distinguished jury members will each also perform. Other events include an Art Exhibition in 14th-century Kingsbury Barn. Do Something for Charity Local Company take part in Fun Run for Kids in Action 9th July 10am G J Smith Roofing have been supporting Kids In Action for nearly 10 years and will have 14 employees taking part in this sponsored 5K Fun Run on Dunstable Downs. Gary Smith had a kidney transplant in December 2016, donated to him by David who also works for the company. As a consequence of this and both with a positive and speedy recovery behind them, they have decided to do something for this very worthwhile local charity. Gary and David are hoping it will be a fun team building day, while also raising money for this great charity. Verulamium at Play is a community-led local charity that is working in partnership with St Albans Council, to raise money to revamp the 30 year old, out-dated play equipment with a modern, stimulating play area that encourages outdoor, adventurous and imaginative play. Ensuring that the new play area will be inclusive and accessible to all, the plan is to relaunch the playground in Spring 2019. The overall cost is estimated to be about £250,000. As Verulamium Park is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, it is likely that ground works will be necessary to protect the underlying archaeology - the site of the Roman city of Verulamium. NOW in the Garden Garden Tips for July • Look out for pests and diseases as temperatures rise and borders become packed with plants. • Weed borders to improve air circulation and encourage beneficial insects by planting nectar rich plants, adding bird boxes and maintaining a wilder part of the garden. If controls are necessary, try to use biological rather than chemical methods. • Deadhead roses to encourage new shoots and flowers. Don’t just snip off dead flowers; prune back to a bud in a leaf axil lower down the stem. • Give roses a midsummer feed to help maintain their general health. • Summer prune Wisteria to neaten new growth, cut back to within five or six buds of the main stems. Prune again in January to 2-3 buds of the main stems, which should ensure more prolific flowering. • Water containers regularly, and borders after dry spells. Try to harvest as much rain water as possible, connecting a water butt to guttering is a simple solution. • Mulch borders well after watering to ensure moisture remains in the soil and to reduce weeding. • Make notes, take photos of borders and start planning any changes to be made in the autumn. Don’t be idle about idling Vehicles release more pollution when stationary than when moving. The nitrous oxides, particulates, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, benzene and other toxic chemicals released, degrade local air quality and exacerbate health conditions such as asthma, eczema, allergies, heart and lung disease. Children are most vulnerable to the effects of air pollution as they breathe 50% more air per pound of body weight than adults. Research shows that these chemicals affect long-term mental development and lung function in children and can cause cancer. Across the UK, it’s thought that air pollution is responsible for the premature death of 50,000 people per year. When considered against the numbers dying as a result of alcoholism (22,000) or road traffic incidents (1,901) we see how significant this issue is. Let’s work together for cleaner air Switching off when you’re stationary for more than a minute cuts emissions, improves air quality, saves lives and money. When buying a car, consider a fuel efficient vehicle with stop start technology. Electric cars are also good as they don’t release any pollution. Clear up the myths Even in cold weather, engines only need 30 seconds to warm up Turning your car off is better for your engine than leaving it on 10 seconds of idling wastes more fuel than restarting In Hertfordshire we have the second worst air quality in England after London, Idling Action St Albans aims to encourage local drivers to switch off their engines if they are stationary for longer than a minute, why not get involved and spread the word.
