A New Platform for Wine & Beer
Platform Wines, a new independent retailer, launched their brand at the end of last year at Harpenden and Berkhamsted train stations The idea behind it was simple – provide good wine and beer at affordable prices while being in a convenient location. You could grab a bottle on the way home. Perfect! Daniel Blake and James Allsop - the owners of Platform Wines – have spent many hours considering how the business could work and importantly how to connect with their customer base. Since they launched, they have run free tasting events every few weeks, bringing their product direct to the consumer. During “Dry January” they even provided alcohol free beer. The business was just finding its feet and improving the service they provided by responding to customer feedback when the global pandemic hit. Like many independent businesses, Platform Wines were hit hard by the restrictions put in place. Much of the business is a result of footfall through the train stations, and with travel restrictions and closures in place, they had to think fast and adapt to keep their business from failing so early in its lifetime. They quickly setup an online delivery service – if the customer couldn’t come to them, they would go to the customer. Not an easy task by any means. They had to begin their days earlier to ensure deliveries got to the right houses, while making sure each customer got exactly what they ordered – beer cans in particular can be tricky as they like to roll in to hard-to-find places. Throughout all this, they have still been expanding their range and have just launched a 5 litre keg selection. They have also partnered with BerkoBeerFest to offer online beer tasting events that customers can sign up for. A selection of beers will be delivered to your house for you to participate in a tasting session led by a professional. It’s clear to see how challenging the last several weeks have been, but Daniel and James insist it has been extremely rewarding. They have been touched by the support from the local community who have got behind them in the hope of seeing this new business succeed. The feedback has been nothing short of brilliant and they have been nicknamed by some as “The Beer Fairy”. It’s not every day you start a new business venture, and it’s certainly not everyday you can say you successfully ran it during a pandemic! NOW for a Good Read Hertfordshire Soldiers of The Great War by Dan Hill & Paul Johnson The authors explore a series of individual case studies of Hertfordshire men who served in various theatres during World War One, all of which had been uncovered as part of the Herts At War community project. This unique collection of accounts includes stories from the Western Front, Gallipoli, Salonika, Mesopotamia, East Africa, Egypt and even Russia in the fight against the Bolsheviks in 1919. The Herts At War Team uncovered many letters and objects in the course of their research, including men who were Victoria Cross winners to those whose courage or bravery went unrecognised, as well as stoicism on the Home Front. One of the most moving of these was about a photograph found in the hands of Sergeant Percy Buck as he lay fatally wounded in a shell hole in 1917. On the back of the photograph of his wife and young son he had written his address and asked for whoever found the photograph to post the image to his loved ones in the event of his death. Sergeant Buck would have assumed it would be a British comrade who would find the photograph, but it was a German soldier who sent it on to the grieving, but grateful, family. The war memorials of Hertfordshire contain the names of over 23,000 men and women who gave their lives while in the service of their country during the Great War; some of their tales are uncovered here. Indeed, the poignant collection of stories, anecdotes and artefacts revealed in this book bring the First World War to life in an unusual and highly moving fashion. ÂŁ30

A History of the Medicines we Take by Anthony C Cartwright & N Anthony Armstrong (a retired pharmacist from Harpenden) An account of the development of medicines from traces of herbs found with the remains of Neanderthal man, to prescriptions written on clay tablets from Mesopotamia in the third millennium BC, to pure drugs extracted from plants in the nineteenth century to the latest biotechnology antibody products. Part one gives an account of the development of the active drugs from herbs used in early medicine, many of which are still in use today, to the synthetic chemical drugs and modern biotechnology products. Part two tells the story of the developments in the preparations that patients take and their inventors, such as Christopher Wren, who gave the first intravenous injection in 1656, and William Brockedon who invented the tablet in 1843. The book traces the changes in patterns of prescribing from simple dosage forms, such as liquid mixtures, pills, ointments, lotions, poultices, powders for treating wounds, inhalations, eye drops, enemas, pessaries and suppositories mentioned in the Egyptian Ebers papyrus of 1550 BCE to the complex tablets, injections and inhalers in current use. Today nearly three quarters of medicines dispensed to patients are tablets and capsules. A typical pharmacy now dispenses about as many prescriptions in a working day as a midnineteenth-century chemist did in a whole year. ÂŁ18.99

New Eco-Friendly Footpath A new eco-friendly surface is being trialled in Clarence Park with a material, known as FlexiPave made from recycled car tyres that would otherwise go to landfill. The path between the cricket pitch and bowls club needed repair as tree roots were pushing upwards and producing cracks. The surface is flexible allowing roots to expand and grow without damaging the path and can absorb water letting it flow into the earth to help nurture trees, plants and grassed areas. The new path contains more than 380 old tyres and if it performs well the material may be used on other footpaths. As well as car tyres, it’s also made of crushed stone and polyurethane. Councillor Anthony Rowlands, Portfolio Holder for Community, Leisure and Sport, said: “By using Flexi-Pave we are protecting the trees, preserving the look of Clarence Park and making use of recycled material. All of this is very much in keeping with our commitment to improving the District’s environment and tackling climate change.”

Walks & More Luton Hoo Estate The bees at Luton Hoo Estate make wonderful honey which is sold in the garden shop, with all the money from sales going back into the Walled Garden Volunteer Project. Why not visit and support this worthwhile cause once things return to ‘normal’. Can You Help a Bee in Trouble? Don't forget bees can sting so... Bee Careful - Bee Patient - Bee Kind If you think a bee might be struggling it’s okay to 'feed' him a spoon of sugary water to get him back on his feet. If the bee recovers remove the sugar water. Don’t leave sugar water out, only use in emergencies. Don’t feed honey to bees as it can make them sick and they could take the sickness back to the colony. Don’t pick up bees, they are delicate and their stings really hurt. Leave out small bowls of water with gravel in the bottom so they can use them as rest stops in hot weather. Why not plant bee friendly plants, such as Pussy Willow, Lavender, Abelia, Mahonia, Apple Trees, Hawthorn and Honeysuckle. Most bees are female. A bee can fly 800k in its lifetime. Bees tell each other directions to good sources of pollen by dancing. Identify the Trees on your Daily Walk How many trees can you see and do you know what they are? Collect a leaf from each one and identify them using the chart on the website, where there are lots more activities why not have a look! www.lutonhooestate.co.uk
Visit Heartwood Forest Although close contact with people isn't recommended, you can still enjoy a beautiful woodland walk.
Nature-loving families can have fun in the Magical Wood which is growing every day and will be a great new natural playground when fully grown. Follow the Family Discovery Trail around this 50-acre woodland and let the kids discover their wild side.
Uncover Ancient Woodland Heartwood Forest is made up of four woods – Langley Wood, Pismire Spring, Well and Pudler’s Wood, and Round Wood. In summer, mature broadleaf trees provide dappled shade for unique plants and wildlife. But be careful where you tread as any misstep could mean there are less bluebells next year.
Spot Birds and Butterflies Volunteers are monitoring populations of plants and wildlife and have recorded more than 80 species of birds and 29 species of butterfly at Heartwood. Look for nest boxes designed to encourage barn owls, tawny owls and kestrels and listen to the wonderful variety of bird song. Watch out for the bird watching spots and hints and tips along the way. www.heartwood.woodlandtrust.org.uk

Summer Gardening This part of the summer is lovely. The veg plot will be in overdrive and there are delicious fruits cropping too. But sometimes your beloved flower beds and borders, pots and planters can have a mid-summerflop. So how can you keep them looking on top form for as long as possible? Regular feeding is essential, particularly for anything in a container. Often crammed into a small space and with compost whose fertiliser content is used up after a few weeks, plants in pots can be close to starving if not fed regularly. Continue feeding herbaceous perennials and annuals growing in open ground too, but not shrubs as they could be encouraged to put on new growth which will not be toughened up enough by winter. A tomato feed with a high potash level works well for anything, but primarily flowers. Deadhead regularly, both the faded flowers and if necessary, remove the stem too. Sharp scissors are best for the quickest job. Do this as soon as the flower starts to deteriorate so it doesn’t use energy to form seed heads. Give perennials a trim as soon as they stop flowering, and follow with a good feed and you can often encourage a second flush of flowers. If plants have become too tall or there has been a lot of rain they can flop over. Check stakes and supports are still doing their job and re-position and tie up if necessary. At this time of year many flowers succumb to common diseases. Powdery mildew: keep the plant well watered at the base but avoid wetting the leaves and spray with a fungicide Aphids: remove with a strong jet of water, introduce ladybirds or spray with an insecticide Leaf spots: pick off the worst affected leaves Rusts: pick off the worst affected leaves, try to keep the foliage dry and spray with a suitable insecticide Caterpillars: pick off by hand or spray with a biological or chemical control Weeds compete for water, food and light so pull them out as soon as you can. If the weather is dry, water regularly. To minimise water wastage and the risk of delicate petals becoming scorched, only water in the evening or early morning. A less frequent but thorough drenching is more beneficial than regular light watering. So with a little extra TLC everything in the garden can still look gorgeous for a long while yet!

Food Glorious Food Strawberry Shortcake Tarts If you don’t want to make the pastry cream then use ready-made custard or top with sweetened whipped cream. 225g self-raising flour / 1tsp baking powder 75g butter, chilled and diced / 50g caster sugar 1 medium egg, beaten / 2-3 tbsp milk For the Pastry Cream and Topping 2 medium eggs / 25g plain flour 50g caster sugar / 1 tsp vanilla extract 300ml milk / 150ml double cream 175g strawberries / 5ml lemon juice 1 tbsp icing sugar Preheat the oven to 190C, fan 170C, Gas 5 and place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Lightly butter 6 x 8cm loose-based fluted tartlet tins. Sift the flour, baking powder and a pinch of salt into a large mixing bowl. Add the butter and rub into the flour to make fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar, egg and enough milk to make a soft dough. Divide the dough into six equal pieces and, using floured hands, press each piece of dough into the base and up the sides of a tartlet tin. Place the tins on the baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes until risen and golden brown. Cool in the tins for 15 minutes then turn out and leave to cool completely. To make the pastry cream, beat together the eggs, flour, caster sugar and vanilla extract. Pour the milk into a small pan, heat until almost boiling and then whisk into the egg mixture. Return the mixture to the pan and cook for 5 minutes, stirring all the time, until thickened. Cover the surface with greaseproof paper and leave to cool completely. Whip the cream until softly peaking and fold into the pastry cream. Puree half the strawberries by pushing through a fine-holed sieve. Stir in the lemon juice and icing sugar. Slice the rest of the strawberries. Spoon the pastry cream on top of the shortcakes, top with the sliced strawberries and spoon over the puree. Serve within 2-3 hours.

The Recovery of Local Pubs CAMRA has cancelled the 2020 St Albans Beer and Cider Festival to focus on helping local pubs recover from the devastating impact coronavirus has had on trade. In its place CAMRA is hoping to organise smaller events later in the year to celebrate great beer, as well as showcase St Albans’ excellent pubs. The team is also planning an even bigger and better event back at The Alban Arena in September 2021. Festival organiser John Bishop said: “After a lot of discussion, we all agreed that, once the lockdown is eased, we want to spend the rest of 2020 putting 100% of our efforts into helping pubs get back on their feet. Sometimes it takes being deprived of something to realise just how important it is. We invite anyone who is missing their local pubs to join CAMRA, and get involved in the fight to safeguard this crucial part of our society and culture for the long term.” www.camra.org.uk
