Sandridge 900+ get involved!

St Leonard’s Church, Sandridge, was consecrated some 900 years ago. In celebration the church and Sandridge Parish Council are organising a varied programme of events between March and November 2014 that will showcase both the history of the communities included in the old ecclesiastical parish and the many attractions and amenities they offer today. The organisers are particularly looking for help with advertising and merchandising, as well as with photographs, both historic and not so historic, of life in the Parish to go into a printed brochure and a display at the Museum of St Albans. The highlight will be a Midsummer Gala on June 21st 2014 on the Jersey Farm Woodland Park, but the year will be packed with things to enjoy from gastronomic treats to sports events and from walks and talks to music for every taste. For contact details and updates on the programme visit www.sandridgechurch.org.uk or www.sandridge-pc.gov.uk

Ten Fabulous Years, Come and Celebrate! In 2003 Childwickbury estate first opened its gates to a new art event. From just a few handpicked artists in the Victorian brick stables it has grown into a hugely popular and well respected event for both visitors and participants. Childwickbury Arts Fair, a very grown up TEN, now consists of marquees housing over 60 artists, live music, fresh and healthy food, a licensed bar, education and activities for everyone, all in a special and unique atmosphere. What makes this event so inspiring is that all artists and craftspeople demonstrate their skills on site. The relaxed and easy going attitude of the fair creates the perfect environment for visitors to approach artists and ask them questions about how they work. Of course it is also a perfect occasion to buy original pieces of art direct from the artist, have a look at the website for a list of everyone participating. There will be a real festival feel with live music throughout, the fair will stay open until 10pm on

Heron chicks are born, despite the arctic temperatures! Again this year the ’RSPB Date With Nature’ project proved very popular in Verulamium Park when some of the heron chicks hatched on time, so well done to the parents for keeping them warm through the freezing winter and spring! When the project ended in April, there were 6 pairs of herons on the main island and one pair on the smaller island in a nest with two enormous chicks which were ready to fledge any minute. Most of the herons on the larger island were still trying to incubate their eggs which was much later than usual. The RSPB’s Steph Morren commented, “The punky haired chicks are adorable! Two of them could be regularly seen poking their heads up to be fed by both parents. Herons will feed on fish mainly, but will also eat frogs and eggs. A pair of magpies has moved into a nest on the island this year so they will have a hard job raising their young so close to so many herons!” The RSPB viewpoint was open for 10 weeks from February to April, so keep an eye out next year when the RSPB will hopefully return for another heron watch. There is plenty of other wildlife to see on the lake and the surrounding area all year, often including amazing views of soaring red kites over the park. So why not grab a picnic and go down to the park and see for yourself!

Bugs and Beasties Bugs really thrive in the warm weather, so how should you deal with the most common problems you are likely to encounter at this time of year? Aphids Greenfly and blackfly, also known as aphids, can be a real menace as they suck sap from your plants and can transmit viruses at the same time. Aphids breed rapidly, so control is necessary. • Check plants regularly and spray with insecticide • Use biological controls, they’re safe for all other creatures and leave no residues • Use a strong jet of water to blast them off plants, do a thorough job or they will soon be back Caterpillars Caterpillars come in all shapes, sizes and colours and can do a lot of damage as they munch their way through plants and vegetables. • Hand pick the pest and squash it or even place it on the bird table. They’re easiest to spot at dusk or early in the morning • Spray with a suitable contact insecticide. • Some caterpillars, in particular the Tortrix Moth produce quantities of fine webbing which they use to bind leaves or other plant parts together to create safe shelters for themselves. It’s hard for a pesticide to reach them so hand picking or squashing is often the best answer • Cover caterpillar-susceptible crops such as calabrese, broccoli and other brassicas with Envirofleece or Enviromesh Woodlice Woodlice can cause damage to soft new growth or soft-fleshed fruits such as strawberries but can’t tackle tougher plant growth. You may see them at the ‘scene of the crime’ and presume that they have caused the damage but they have probably moved in to clean up a lot of the debris created by other creatures. Earwigs Earwigs can cause damage to the flowers of plants such as clematis and dahlias, where they nibble out large quantities of petal or leaf. Try trapping them using an inverted flowerpot on top of a bamboo cane. The cane and pot should be positioned amongst susceptible plants and the pot needs to be stuffed loosely full of hay, straw or similar material. The earwigs climb in there to hide and the pots can then be emptied. by Pippa Greenwood

An Uplifting and Positive Experience Eleanor from ‘Living Lighter’ who offers Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) got in touch about advertising in ‘st albans NOW’ and asked me whether I would like to go along for an session, I was slightly sceptical, but thought why not, so went along to see what it was all about. Like many of us do, I’ve picked up some ‘emotional baggage’ along the way through life, some of which can make you feel a little stressed from time to time, so I wondered if the process might help me feel more relaxed.

Making a Song and Dance of it The West End is always buzzing as people flock to see the hottest musicals. Many of them started life as novels, plays and poetry, and the authors’ words were adapted into catchy show-tunes and moving ballads. Here’s a selection of the best-loved tales to get you toe-tapping. Pygmalion George Bernard Shaw

Long before Julie Andrews was beaten to the film role by Audrey Hepburn, ‘My Fair Lady’ began life as Shaw’s triumphant comic play Pygmalion. The deliciously arrogant Professor Henry Higgins makes a bet that he can turn ‘guttersnipe’ Eliza Doolittle into a lady but she is far from being the downtrodden flower girl he believes her to be. It’s one of Shaw’s greatest critiques of the English class system and it’s abso-bloomin’lutely hilarious to boot.

Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats T.S. Eliot

When Cats were merely kittens in Lloyd Webber’s eyes, readers were curling up in a sunny corner with Eliot’s Practical Cats. Writing under the name ‘Old Possum’ in letters to his godchildren, Eliot’s poems included tales of Macavity, Mr Mistoffelees and Bustopher Jones. The charming collection is much-loved the world over for its unique take on cat psychology.

Les Miserables Victor Hugo

Jean Valjean is a man who’s

20

desperate to escape his past, but with a policeman like Javert on his tail, this escaped convict is going to have a battle on his hands. Les Mis has everything: mistaken identity, injustice and love, all set against the backdrop of the French Revolution. It’s the world’s longest running musical, and recently gave us the cinematic opportunity to see Hugh Jackman without a shirt on.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Ian Fleming

Written by Ian Fleming of James Bond fame, who penned the original three-part series for his son. The idea has to be every child’s dream: a flying car. Inventor Caratacus Potts restores a second-hand vehicle and he and his children name it after the sound of a backfiring engine. It soon becomes clear that Chitty isn’t your average automobile and the family embarks on an adventure that involves kidnap and gangsters, cross-channel flying and some bizarre characters. When Chitty made it to the West End, audiences poured in to see the flying car in all its glory.

Oliver Twist Charles Dickens

Fagin told his boys they ‘gotta pick a pocket or two’ and composer Lionel Bart picked more than an idea or two from Dickens, transposing the

Victorian London of Oliver Twist to the stage, along with the wonderful characters of Twist himself, lovable rogue The Artful Dodger and the terrifying thug, Bill Sykes. The book’s a lot darker than the musical with the brutality of the streets along with the poverty and drudgery of many of London’s lower classes portrayed vividly.

Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West Gregory Maguire

Written in 1995, Maguire’s novel is set in the land of Oz, way before Dorothy and Toto follow the yellow brick road. Elphaba is a girl who was born green, with sharp teeth and a disagreeable temperament. In Maguire’s vision, Oz is imaginatively recreated, with all its Technicolor splendour practically seeping from the page. But there are sinister goings on, adult themes and a not-so-happyending .The young Elphaba soon learns that it’s really not easy being green.

Alban Weekend Saturday 22nd June – Sunday 23rd June

Alban Pilgrimage Saturday 22nd June The spectacular Alban Pilgrimage is a celebration of the life of Saint Alban who gave the City its name. This unique and dramatic event sees giant carnival puppets retrace Alban’s last steps and tell his remarkable and moving story. Come and line the streets and see Roman chariots, centurions, lions, roses and executioners all take their place in the procession starting from St Peter’s Church, through the City Centre to St Albans Cathedral. Alban’s story takes us right back to the beginning of the Christian faith in Britain, but still remains fresh and inspiring for Christians today. It reminds us of the unbroken continuity of faith in Christ and sets before us a powerful example of courage, compassion, hospitality and generosity as Alban risked his life to welcome a persecuted stranger. It also reminds us that witnessing as a Christian always comes at a cost. Alban is honoured as the first British martyr, and his grave, on which the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban was built, quickly became a place of pilgrimage. For over 1700 years, people

24

have journeyed to this place to remember Alban, to pray for peace and healing, and to seek God. It’s not only a stunning spectacle; it’s a profoundly moving experience, and will unfold as follows. Procession starts 11am Eucharist 12 noon Evensong 4pm Everyone welcome. For more information call 01727 890245 or visit www.stalbanscathedral.org

Alban Street Party Sunday 23rd June St Albans has a long tradition of offering warmth and hospitality, which is still alive today. Following the success of last year’s Diamond Jubilee event, the City will be hosting the first Alban Street Party in St Peters Street. Residents and visitors are invited to enjoy local music and entertainment, join in a Medieval Feast and sample some of the best local hospitality at a special food and drink market. A Quiet Haven

26

Close to the town centre, the garden at the Museum of St Albans is a quiet haven to relax, read a book or enjoy a picnic. The garden is open to the public every day during the opening hours of the museum. On some days, the garden is also used for activities offered by the museum. Tots Tales on select Wednesdays, take toddlers up to the age of 4 into the garden for storytelling. On Wonder Wednesdays, families may find a miniature golf game to enjoy. So there’s lots of reasons to take a walk down Hatfield Road and visit the garden at the Museum of St Albans.

Active Antz

Why not come along to Westminster Lodge and join in with a series of special fundraising Active Antz children’s play sessions where the special £2 fee will be donated to Grove House Hospice. Everyone Active will match the amount raised to double the funds. The next session will be held on Wednesday 19th June from 1.30 - 2.30pm. For ages 2 - 4 years old. The emphasis of Active Antz is on creative play

and social learning. Numerous activities including a bouncy castle, hoop games, ball games, skittles and music are all available to stimulate their co-ordination and creativity. Parents are invited to interact with their children and to enjoy some relaxing social time. “We run Active Antz each Monday and Friday at this time and it proves very popular,” says Gemma Spriggs, Everyone Active Junior Activities Co-Ordinator at Westminster Lodge. “We have been asked to put on a mid-week session and we decided to make this a little different by running a fundraising Wednesday session every few weeks to help support Grove House” she explains. “We can take a maximum of 25 children so if we have a full house that amounts to £100 per session going straight to the charity, thanks to the Everyone Active matched giving promise.” Please book by calling 01727 736080. olfson Lecture Theatre,

2013 marks the 800th anniversary of a meeting in St Albans that started the journey leading to the sealing of Magna Carta in Runnymede in 1213. At the ‘Museum of St Albans’ from 1st June you can find out what motivated the barons and clergy to formulate their demands to King John. Over the weekend of 2nd - 4th August the city will commemorate the events of 1213 in a number of venues, including the Museum of St Albans, Verulamium Park, the medieval city centre and St Albans Cathedral, and show how Magna Carta is relevant to the present day for audiences of all ages. Don’t miss Manga Carta - a retelling of the ‘Magna Carta themes of injustice’ and the fight for freedom in the style of Japanese Manga comics, on display at the Museum of St Albans at intervals from June to August. www.stalbansmuseums.org.uk

Too Many Brewers For centuries brewing was carried in St Albans but by 1606 the trade was causing problems. At a Court held on the 11th April it was reported that the ale houses and tippling houses were “the cause of much drunkenness and looseness”. Proper control was impossible because there were so many unlicensed houses. As if that wasn’t bad enough the brewers were using so much wood that the price of wood was rising year on year. The Corporation decided to act and declared that in future there should only be 4 beer brewers and 2 ale brewers. Robert Shrimpton, William Spencer, John Moseley, Robert Woolley, Robert Briggs and John Davis were appointed as brewers. Anyone else caught brewing could expect to be fined 40 shillings and his brew confiscated. Furthermore if a brewer served ale to an unlicensed house he would be fined 40 shillings.

Albans in 1603, 1604 and 1605 were John Moseley, William Spencer and Robert Shrimpton respectively. Even if they were different individuals it is likely the Mayors were related to their namesakes. The decision must have caused bad feeling and it seems rumours circulated about Robert Woolley. The Court held on 24th April must have been aware of this as it stated that it was the justices who put the resolution to the Corporation and obtained approval from the High Steward. These facts were to be placed on record as “certain persons” had been maligning Robert Woolley “for soliciting this course as though it were his private work with our privity, whereby they manifest their spleen”. Or, as we might say, “A case of sour grapes!”

But how were the brewers chosen? It seems they were nominated by various people connected with the Corporation. One nominee, Nash was rejected in favour of Briggs on the grounds that Nash did not have a brew house. And unlike Briggs he already had another trade, that of butcher. Curiously the Mayors of St

Recipes from Abbots Kitchen at the Cathedral June is often the month when parents are asked to help out at the school summer fete. There are many ways to help, but home baking is always popular, whether it be for the cake stall or refreshments stall. Below are two great recipes that can be for either and are easy to make into larger quantities. Both can be frozen so that you can make them in batches. The scones go well with a home-made jam so if you know a friend that can make some why not sell them together.

Lemon Cake Bars

Topping juice of 1 large lemon 125g / 4oz granulated sugar

Base 175g / 6oz butter or block margarine, softened 175g / 6oz caster sugar 175g / 6oz self raising flour 2 large eggs 2-3 drops of vanilla essence

Pre-heat the oven to gas mark 4, 350F, 180C and lightly grease a cake tin 20cm x 30cm x 2cm deep. Line the base with greaseproof paper. In a mixing bowl beat together the butter or margarine and sugar, add the remaining base ingredients and beat together until smooth. Pour into the cake tin and level off. Bake for about 25-30 minutes or until the cake has risen and is firm to the touch and shrinking back from the sides of the tin. Once the cake is cooked remove from the oven and allow to cool for about 10 minutes. Then mix together the lemon juice and sugar and pour immediately and evenly over the cake. Leave to go completely cold, the juice will soak into the cake and a lemon sugar crust will form on top. Using the paper remove the cake from the tin and slice into 15 evenly sized bars. Store in an air tight container for 3-4 days or freeze wrapped in tin foil for up to 2 months. Defrost thoroughly before use.

Fruit Scones 225g / 8oz self raising flour 25g / 1oz caster sugar 50g /2 oz cold butter or block margarine, cut into small cubes 50g / 2oz dried mixed fruit

175ml / 6floz milk 1tblsp lemon juice 1 small pinch of salt

Pre-heat the oven to gas mark 7, 425F, 220C and grease and lightly flour a baking sheet. Sift the flour and salt into a mixing bowl and stir in the caster sugar. Rub in the butter or margarine with your finger tips, until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add the mixed fruit and stir the lemon juice into the milk to sour it. Then using a long flat bladed knife stir the liquid into the dry mix a little at a time until it forms a soft ball (there may be some liquid left over). Once it comes together turn on to a floured surface and knead lightly. Roll out to about 2cm / ¾” thick and cut out using a 4-5cm / 1½ -2” cutter, gather up the remains, press together, re-roll gently and cut out more until the dough is used up. Brush the tops with a little milk, place in the oven for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown on top and bottom. Turn onto a cooling rack. The scones will keep for 2-3 days in an airtight tin or up to 2 months in bags in the freezer. Defrost thoroughly before using.
