Our friendly and knowledgeable team take pride in delivering more than just value for money. First class advice and extensive product ranges mean that we can provide everything you need for your home and garden. Love The Plot You’ve Got Is your garden a bit unloved? Full of kids’ toys and cluttered with wheelie bins and dark hedges which look uninspired and tired? Well you are not alone. The ‘Love the plot you’ve got’ campaign is here to help inspire you to make the best out of your outside space. If you need help with your plot then pop into Burston Garden Centre for some fantastic ideas. June: What to do in your Garden As the gardening season continues to stroll boldly into summer many herbaceous perennials are starting to reach for the light now. Aquilegia, Dicentra and Geum are all looking great at the moment as is the fresh young foliage of the Hostas. It’s a fab time to get cracking with those summer patio containers and baskets and also for you ‘Grow Your Own’ fans there is a plethora of fruit and veg to choose from. Lawn weeds will start to spread now unless they are treated early. So pick up a bottle of Resolva Lawn Weed killer to ensure your lawn is good enough for Wimbledon. After creating the perfect garden, the last thing you want to do is allow slugs and snails to eat your flowers and plants. So pop by our Garden Care Department to pick up some slug killers, traps or a repellent before it’s too late. Prevention is better than cure so protect your plants against Aphids by spraying them with a pesticide such as Bayer Ultimate Bug Killer or Organic Bug Free for the greener gardener. As the sun continues to shine through June, remember to raise the cutting height on your lawn mower.

NOW in the Garden June is a lovely month as your garden should be in full bloom and the weather means we can fully enjoy the fruits of our labours. There are still plenty of tasks to keep you busy this month though. Lawn To keep your lawn at its best mow regularly, taking off a little at a time to ensure it’s not cut too short or the grass could scorch in sunny weather. In fact, during dry periods it often helps to let the grass remain a little longer. Remember to water new lawns regularly, particularly in dry periods. Watering after sun down is best to reduce water evaporation. Do not walk directly over a newly laid lawn until rooted and settled. This can take six to eight weeks. Use plywood boards to prevent foot prints and sinkage. Planting Any gaps in your borders are best filled with summer bedding at this stage. Sweet peas are ideal, as they are fast growing. Begonias,

20

geraniums, celosia, marigolds and pansies are also very popular choices. A few hours before planting, heavily water the beds and ideally plant in the early evening. Pruning To ensure a longer season of flowers, regularly deadhead plants such as lilac and forsythia, as deadheading diverts energy from producing seed into producing flowers. It’s better to wait for at least six weeks after flowering has finished and the foliage has died down naturally when cutting back dead bulb foliage, as cutting back too early can lead to a lack of flowers next year. Watering Regular watering is essential for pot plants, summer bedding, anything newly planted and even established plants. Pot plants and summer bedding should be watered daily, new plants initially watered daily and then every 2-3 days. All other plants should be watered thoroughly once or twice a week to encourage them to put down roots in search of water rather than drawing the roots to the moisture on the surface. Happy Gardening! James Lanwarne Lanwarne Landscapes

The Vortex by Noel Coward Company of Ten 3rd - 5th & 7th - 11th July Florence Lancaster, an attractive socialite with a penchant for young lovers, is basking in the attentions of her current beau. She’s deeply perturbed when her son Nicky returns from France with his feisty fiancée, but Nicky has another, more challenging secret… Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare Company of Teens 16th & 17th July A familiar tale, but the Company of Teens asks new questions. How can Romeo woo Juliet in a world where physical relationships are overtaken by updates and distance? Communication, or lack of it, seems to be at the heart of Shakespeare’s play. The Teens link this to the modern obsession with constant sharing and emoting. Abbey Theatre Westminster Lodge, St Albans 01727 857861 www.abbeytheatre.org.uk
