The Alban Weekend 18th & 19th June The Alban Pilgrimage on 18th June will leave from St Peter’s Church, St Albans at 11am followed by traditional giant puppets travelling down St Peter’s Street, telling the story of Albans martyrdom, and how St Albans got its name. Roman chariots, centurions, lions and roses all take their place in the dramatic procession through the streets to St Albans Cathedral. Local bellringers will be setting up a mini-ring, a frame with small bells hung like those in church towers, outside The Alban Arena from 12 noon, where you can have a go at bellringing yourself. The Alban Street Festival 19th June 12 noon - 6pm Celebrating all that’s fun and fabulous about St Albans, the festival will be staged in St Peter’s Street which will be closed to traffic on the day. A full programme of free activities, performances, music, food and fun will have you dancing in the street. All we need now is the sunshine... and you! Taxi Rank Stage will be a carnival of sound compered by Radio Verulam’s Denise Parsons. Get your dancing shoes ready at 2pm for a massed folk dance. A caller will teach the intricacies of the ceilidh and then encourage everyone to give it a go. The Wheelhouse, a unique, rolling acrobatic-theatre show is coming to St Albans for the first time. It will start outside the Town Hall by Victoria Street at 1pm and again at 3pm. Relax and enjoy Godfrey's fish and chips, a beach bar and deckchairs while watching specially curated films on a big screen! Large Haiku boards that have been created by writers from the local Parkinson’s UK branch using a traditional form of 3 line Japanese poetry can be seen by the Old Town Hall. Garden City Samba will bring their Brazilian rhythms to the Civic Centre from 12.30pm and again at 2.15pm, dancing through the streets. 3v3 Pop Up Soccer, Tri-Golf, Street Tennis alongside over 40 stalls offering the finest street food, so come hungry and enjoy the feast! GO2 a project “Celebrating Creativity, Discarding Labels” will also be performing and UR Crew will be bringing their DJing skills and spinning an eclectic mix of tracks to get the party started, while Purple All Stars will provide music with a message. There’s such a wide variety of events, so whatever you fancy trying just go along and join in the fun. www.enjoystalbans.com/albanweekend

All handymen prove themselves capable and experienced in home maintenance works before joining the network and carry recent CRB Checks. Managing Director, Nick Orde-Powlett says “Our vetting process is second to none. All our handymen are friendly retired police officers with many years working in the community under their belt – they genuinely care.“ Local Handyman John Mercer said: “Working as a ‘Blue' handyman is a great opportunity for me to use my skills to continue working for the community. Hold a Strawberry Tea during June, July or August and help support people facing breast cancer. Whether it’s you and a few friends in the garden, a family tea party or even a strawberry bake sale at your work or school, it’s a great excuse to get together and make a massive difference. When someone is diagnosed with breast cancer, every bit of their life can change forever. Whether you do it to say ‘thank you’, in memory of someone or just in the name of summery fun, every penny raised will help Breast Cancer Care support more families through one of the most difficult challenges they will ever face. £10 could give 10 people the information they need to face treatment and make vital decisions about their care. £55 could help a younger woman feel less isolated by attending a course with expert information, support and a space to connect with others with the same diagnosis. Summer’s here and once again the private estate of Childwickbury will open for artists, crafters and musicians to create, make and perform. This will be the thirteenth year of this very popular annual event and Christiane Kubrick, creator of the fair said “Every year we wonder how we can top the last one but the magic of Childwickbury comes to the fore and the combination of hard work and generosity of everyone involved improves the Arts Fair every year." With over 60 exhibitors including fine art, sculpture, pottery, wood, textiles, jewellery, printing and more there’ll be something to suit every taste. In addition to the wonderful and inspiring art there’ll be live music all day on Saturday and Sunday with local popular band Co-Jones headlining on Saturday and as the music continues throughout the day why not make an evening of it? 10th - 12th & 14th - 18th June Underdog five-a-side football team Barely Athletic doesn’t seem to have what it takes to win, despite the urgings of head coach Viv. Will the (largely) gay side ever get their hands on that trophy? But in the face of mounting defeat, something far more important is happening to the team. A deliciously funny and heartfelt play from one of the most promising new playwrights around. Zero by Rachel Ruth Kelly 25th June 8pm Popcorn Productions presents this blistering one woman show sitting on the knife-edge between dark and funny, exposing the uncompromising reality of a young woman on the brink of adulthood. Words just sort of ‘happen’ for Beth and before you know it she’s just said everything and she can’t put the words back in her mouth. Turning 21, lighting a cigarette, and trying to forget. That’s where This Girl Can in Herts Week can help with loads of inspiration through a vast range of local, female friendly and focussed activities. Year of the Allium Claydon House In the 1750s Ralph Verney set out to create a country house of extraordinary grandeur that would dazzle his wealthy neighbours and outdo his political rivals. Thirty years on he was facing financial ruin. Today the interiors that remain are among the most ambitious and lavish ever created in the 18th century. Claydon has been occupied by the Verney family for more than 550 years; the place is a testament to their fascinating fluctuating fortunes, from their close involvement in the English Civil War to the family connection with Florence Nightingale. 60 years of the National Trust at Claydon 4th June 11am - 4pm Find your hair rollers; get practicing the jive and re-live the 1950s as Claydon celebrates with a live band and family games on the terrace, courtesy of Jaques of London. Colouring Party with Amy-Jane Adams 5th June 11am -12 noon Go along and meet artist and author, Amy-Jane Adams. Help Amy colour in giant copies of her artwork and chat to her about her new book, 'The Country House Colouring Book', produced for the National Trust. Claydon's Characters 7th June 10am -11am Join members of the Claydon team to discover more about the characters that helped to shape Claydon into the house it is today. Buckingham Fire Service Fun Day 18th June 11am - 4pm Meet members of the Buckingham Fire Service and join them for a day of fun and games on the terrace. Take part in the house trail and see the fire engine up close. Claydon Chamber Orchestra 26th June 7pm -9pm Enjoy an evening of classical delights performed by the Claydon Chamber Orchestra. 2016 is the Year of the Allium, like exclamation marks, alliums stand out from other plants, adding emphasis wherever they’re grown. Most allium flowers have a long, leafless stalk topped with a globe-like bloom that’s made up of a cluster of individual florets. The blooms are odorless until crushed, when they release strong sulfur-based chemicals emitting a volatile odor and bitter taste. Of the 800 species, just a few are edible: leeks, shallots, garlic, and chives are the most common. The most popular ornamental alliums are the bigheaded ones such as ‘Gladiator’ and ‘Globemaster’. Alliums offer so many different flower sizes, heights and bloom times, that it’s easy to incorporate them into almost any sort of garden or landscape. Plant a variety of different species to enjoy a succession of blooms all season long.
