Welcome to March
How fantastic it always seems when the spring flowers appear, it’s such a joy to have the gardens and parks full of colour again. March also brings with it the opportunity to spoil our mums on Mothers’ Day, not that we need to wait ‘til then! Butterfly World re-opens with a host of activities planned, and there are numerous charity events going on from Red Nose Day to the Chilterm Warrior Run, as well as a myriad of music of all genres to delight and entertain us. For something quite differrent why not try Real Tennis at Hatfield House, but make sure you book now as spaces are limited. With the longer days here there’s more time to get out and about, so why not try planting trees at Heartwood Forest or pop along and see what the Herons are up to in Verulamium Park. If you’d like to be in next months magazine please just get in touch... ...and don’t forget if you need a local business just pick up ‘st albans NOW’ or read it every month online. jane & wendy jane@theNOWmagazines.com www.theNOWmagazines.com vertise call

A play re-enacting the story of the death and resurrection of Jesus, performed by just one actor, Mark Topping, is coming to St Albans. In the drama numerous characters relive their experience of the death and resurrection of Jesus. ‘The drama is a powerful exploration of events at the heart of Christianity,’ says Mark Topping. ‘You are taken on an imaginative journey and challenged to look again at Jesus of Nazareth and reflect on what it might all mean.’ The Revd Rosemary Fletcher, minister of Marlborough Road Methodist Church says, ‘We are very much looking forward to Marks’ visit to St Albans. Mark is a renowned actor, well known to Methodists in particular for his portrayal of John Wesley. The play is based on a book written by his father, the Methodist minister, poet and broadcaster Frank Topping.’ All profits in aid of the Church Refurbishment Fund and Medecins Sans Frontieres in support of their work in the Ebola crisis in West Africa.

NOW in the Garden March marks the beginning of Spring and you should start to see life emerging in the garden. This month focus on sowing, pruning and preparing the soil for the forthcoming growth. Sowing and Planting If March's weather is mild you can start planting hardy annuals, herbaceous perennials and summer flowering bulbs. Hardy annuals are best sown in irregularly shaped beds for a natural look. When planting summer flowering bulbs make sure the soil is well drained to prevent the bulbs from rotting. Deciduous trees, hedging and shrubs can still be planted this month. If the weather warms up, evergreen trees and shrubs can be moved towards the end of the month, however if it remains cold we recommend waiting until April. Stakes and rabbit guards should be put in place at the time of planting trees, to prevent damage to the rootball or bark.
40
Pruning Many summer or late-summer flowering deciduous shrubs, such as Buddleja and Hydrangea, can be pruned between January and March. Established roses can be pruned now, as they start to grow, but do stop before their leaves begin to unfurl. It is too early in the year to prune tender evergreens, deciduous flowering prunus and spring flowering shrubs, so do wait later in the year. General Maintenance Now is the time to prepare beds for spring growth. Weed beds before applying a mulch, working in organic matter to clay soils to improve drainage. Most plants will benefit from feeding this month. Top up pots and plants with fresh compost, feed borders with a general purpose fertiliser, apply a granular rose fertiliser to roses and feed trees, hedges and shrubs with a balanced fertiliser. If the weather is mild you should remove winter protection from plants, however if frosts are indicated wait until they have passed to avoid frost damage. Happy Gardening!
