A New Look for March! As you’ll have noticed the magazine is looking a bit different, with all the local businesses at the beginning, followed by our usual jam packed events pages. A new look, same great magazine! We’ve just had a call from a lovely lady, who loves the magazine so much, she had to ring to tell us, and was amazed, as you might be, that we put them together each month working from our kitchen tables! If you run your own business, we’d love to include you, we offer a helpful, friendly service, so just give us a call, to see how they can work for you. The magazines are monthly, if you don’t receive one, pick a copy up in town or read them on our social media pages. Follow us on Facebook and Twiiter to get reminders of what’s happening locally throughout the month.

St Albans Bowling Club
Keep Active, Stay Healthy, Make New Friends - Play Bowls!
Open Day - Everyone Welcome - Sunday 28th April 11am - 1pm / 2pm - 4pm St Albans Bowling Club, the oldest bowls club in St Albans, founded in 1903, is located in the delightful setting of Clarence Park. It has historical links with Sam Ryder, who bequeathed a silver cup to the Club long before he discovered golf. The Club has over 100 members, and is always eager to welcome new members of all ages, genders and abilities. Bowls is gaining in popularity as it’s inexpensive, easy to learn, and no longer perceived as an older persons sport. Free coaching for prospective members is available at the Club with all equipment provided. The summer season runs from April to September, with single gender and mixed matches being played, ranging from competitions within the Club to matches against other clubs and competitions at county and district level. For those who prefer a less competitive game, there are informal sessions called “roll-ups” to be enjoyed during the week. The Club also prides itself on its sociable atmosphere and a number of events are arranged during the season and through the winter months in its licensed clubhouse. For more information, or if you have any questions, please contact Colin or Clare 01727 854129 or recruitment.training@stabc.co.uk

St Albans Good Neighbours Needs YOU In 2018 we had over 2,250 requests for help, which was a 9% increase on the previous year. But sadly our number of volunteers did not increase to match this extra need. We need: Duty Officers to answer our phone from their own homes. Practical people who can do little tasks such as fix curtain rails or do shopping. Drivers who can take people to hospital and other health appointments, and also social visits. Befrienders who can visit someone on a regular basis. It is very flexible, enjoyable and rewarding. Some volunteers help out a few times a year and others a few times a week, and expenses are reimbursed. If you would like to get involved please call 01727 830713 or visit www.sagns.org

World Book Day 7th March World Book Day is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) of reading. In fact, it’s the biggest event of its kind recognised in over 100 countries. This will be the 22nd year when children of all ages come together to appreciate reading very loudly and very happily. The main aim of World Book Day is to encourage children to explore the pleasure of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own. That’s why all primary school children will be given World Book Day Tokens, which they can take to a local bookshop and use to pick one of 10 exclusive, new and free books. Or, they can use it to get £1 off any book or audio book costing over £2.99. worldbookday.com

Discover the life stories behind the making of hats in this fascinating talk by hat industry historian and former museum curator Veronica Main. Veronica has selected hats from the Museums world class collection to highlight the story behind the countries and hat makers that helped make Luton a world leader in the industry. She has a passion for the hat industry and has travelled to many countries to discover the secrets of the trade, but her heart is set firmly in Luton; the heart of the British hat trade. Red Velvet Cake What makes the texture of one cake different to the another? How can seemingly similar ingredients create totally different effects? With this Red Velvet Cake, it is the addition of the buttermilk and the acids which contribute to a tighter, slightly denser crumb, somewhere between a Victoria Sponge and a brownie. 125g butter 325g caster sugar 40g cocoa powder 2 eggs 1 tsp red extra colour paste (not the red liquid) 1 tsp vanilla extract 250g buttermilk 325g self-raising flour 15g bicarbonate of soda 30g white wine vinegar Beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Meanwhile add all the dry ingredients to a bowl and set aside. Slowly beat the eggs into the butter and sugar mixture. Add the red colouring and the vanilla, followed by half of the dry ingredients and half the buttermilk. Repeat until everything has just come together. Pour in the vinegar and beat until throughly mixed. Split between 3 x 6” cake tins or 2 x 8” cake tins. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 160C/ Gas Mark 3 for 27 minutes. For the icing: 150g butter 150g cream cheese 450g icing sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract Beat the butter, icing sugar and vanilla until it’s very light in colour. Add the cream cheese one spoonful at a time, mixing well each time. Once all the cream cheese has been added beat on a high speed for 3 minutes. Level off the cakes with a knife and put any offcuts into a food processor to blitz into a fine powder. Assemble the cake by putting a layer of cream cheese icing between each cake. Cover the rest of the cake with icing, smoothing the top and sides with a pallet knife. Gently push the cake crumbs into the side of the cake to get an even layer.
