Welcome to March Looking forward to spring, and hopefully things getting back to some sort of normality, even with us maybe sitting next to each other again working on the magazines rather than on Zoom! We’ve included as many events as we can to keep you busy both at home and out and about, and as always a selection of local businesses from page 3 plumbers to back cover builders! If you’re interested in advertising we’d love to hear from you. The magazines are monthly and if you don’t have a copy handy, you can always find them on Twitter, Facebook or our website. In the meantime stay safe and look after yourself and others.

Make a Sundial Here’s one of the fun things to do which can be found on the Luton Hoo Estate website. A sundial is a device that uses the position of the sun to reflect the time. An upright stick, called a gnomon, is positioned to cast a shadow onto a pre-marked sundial face. As the sun moves across the sky, the shadow also moves. You can make a basic sundial with: a straight stick approx 2 feet long, 12 pebbles and a watch. Find a place that gets full sun exposure all day. Push one end of the stick into the ground. As we live in the Northern Hemisphere, you will need to slightly slant the stick towards the
6
north. Start at 7am after the sun has risen. Look at the stick as the sun shines down on it, the stick will cast a shadow. Use a pebble to mark the place where the shadow falls on the ground. Return to the stick every hour and use another pebble to mark where the stick’s shadow falls. The shadow will move in a clockwise direction. Continue until dusk. www.lutonhooestate.co.uk

Teenage Mental Health Is your teenager struggling with their mental health? As a parent, it can be difficult to help. Teenagers are often uncomfortable sharing their innermost thoughts and feelings with you and, even if they do, you probably won’t know what to do. Although therapy can be useful, teenagers often don’t engage fully with it as they feel scared or ashamed of their feelings. As a therapist and a mum, I am passionate about helping teenagers to reclaim their happiness. I have just published a book, Hello Happy! A Teenager’s Guide to Creating Positive Mental Health. It is designed as an interactive self-help guide which teenagers can work through on their own and it will help them uncover and change the root cause of any poor mental health. It’s a bit like having a personal therapist in a book. Written clearly and simply, Hello Happy! is packed full of useful and life-changing information. With interactive exercises to help uncover negative patterns, a useful tool for managing emotions and the opportunity to create a personalised action plan, my hope is it will help teenagers to transform their mental health for good. “Totally changed my perception of mental health” – LP, age 16 Available at www.eleanorhatherley.com www.amazon.co.uk

World Book Day 4th March This is a celebration of reading, authors, illustrators and books, and aims to help change children’s lives by making reading together and reading for pleasure a habit for life. Sharing stories together for just ten minutes a day will encourage a love of reading and it’s fun for everyone. You can read together anywhere and everywhere, from breakfast to bedtime. Thanks to National Book Tokens, book publishers and booksellers, World Book Day will continue to work with schools and nurseries during lockdown to distribute £1 book tokens. This will be as a printed token (for those children in school) and a single-use digital version, that can be printed at home or shown to booksellers on a phone/tablet. Tokens can also be found on McDonald’s Happy Meal boxes through March, and in some children’s magazines. In case bookshops don’t open straight away tokens will be honoured beyond 28th March. www.worldbookday.com

Suitable for adults and older children. Presenter: Dave Willis, People and Wildlife Officer Tutorial: Learn to Sketch Red Kites 30th March 2pm Online Settle down with a sketch pad and pencils, and begin to observe and sketch birds in flight. Become a Hedgehog Champion Hedgehogs are in trouble; we’ve lost a third since the millennium. To help them survive they need access to gardens and that’s where you can help. There are more than 70,000 Hedgehog Champions forming a vibrant and enthusiastic community. You don’t need any special skills, just a bit of initiative and a love for the spiny creatures. Make a hole in your garden fence or wall, then map it on the BIG Hedgehog Map on the website. You can also register on Hedgehog Street and become a ‘Hedgehog Champion’, learn about hedgehogs and make donations. Hedgehog Street is run by a small, committed group of people, but it’s part of a much wider conservation project aimed at helping our wild hedgehogs. They rely on donations to support this work, why not join them. www.hedgehogstreet.org

This year your Red Nose will be 100% plastic-free and made from bagasse, a natural by-product of sugarcane, chosen for its widely celebrated sustainable qualities. NOW at St Albans Museum + Gallery Pandemic Portraits 1st March - 30th Sept free Living through the Covid Pandemic is the biggest challenge faced by us for over 70 years. Since October local photographer Nic Madge has been recording the way in which we are surviving by making portraits of people as they go about their daily lives. Each photo shows an individual with and without their facemask with a quote about how the Pandemic has affected them, capturing a snapshot of St Albans under lockdown. Nic plans to keep taking photos until the end of September. The full collection of images will then be added to St Albans Museums' collection. All portraits will be displayed together as a short film when the Museum reopens and will be updated as more photos are taken. To take part in Pandemic Portraits, weather permitting, Nic will be standing outside the Museum + Gallery a couple of days a week. If you are part of a group who are keen to be photographed you can also email nicmadge@ntlworld.com to arrange a time and place. St Albans resident, Nic Madge has recently completed an MA in Documentary Photography and Photo-journalism at the University of the Arts, London. Previously, he has published photobooks and had solo exhibitions of portraits/street photography at the British Museum and the Swiss Cottage Gallery, as well as several joint exhibitions. www.stalbansmuseums.org.uk
Workouts for Young Disabled People WheelPower, the national charity for wheelchair sport, has released 10 new online video workouts aimed at primary and secondary aged disabled children. It’s hoped they will assist parents and teachers with the provision of PE and give opportunities for disabled children to keep fit. WheelPowers’ mission is to transform lives through sport and physical activity, since April ‘20 they have released 25 home workout videos, hosted 47 live exercise classes and gifted over 220 sets of resistance bands to support disabled people to remain active at home. The new workout videos each with a unique theme are split into two age groups making every one different and varied. They are free, and available on the WheelPower website and YouTube channel. Former GB Wheelchair Basketball player, Ella Beaumont is the instructor, and throughout the pandemic has created some fantastic fitness resources for disabled people to enjoy at home. She has become well known online for her use of everyday household equipment within her routines. Each workout is about 20 minutes and fully adaptable and inclusive, so everyone can join in. www.wheelpower.org.uk/resources/wheelpowerworkouts-for-young-people www.youtube.com/WheelPowerVideos
Corona Monologues Last summer the Abbey Theatre ran an initiative called Corona Monologues, asking people to write scripts about lockdown, which The Company of Ten’s talented array of actors brought to life. Film director Mike Newell, famous for such classics as Four Weddings and a Funeral and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, judged the 37 entries and picked his favourites in three categories. Mike was so impressed by the calibre that he decided to spread the joy by awarding Best Writing, Best Direction and Best Acting gongs. ‘I thought all the entries had real originality in their ideas, presentation and performance,’ he said.So without further ado, as they say, here are the winners: Best writing: Zoe Croft: Some Way Out Best direction: Sarah Soutar and Kaisa Bambridge: Dear Corona Virus Best acting: Lisa Sinnott: If I Could and Supermarket Aisle You can see all the entries on the Theatres’ YouTube channel, social media feeds or www.abbeytheatre.org.uk/first-corona-monologues-released
