Welcome to May
Summer’s nearly here and what a joy to have longer evenings, the sun on your back and washing on the line! Wendy’s got more frogs in her pond than she can count, and is tackling the ivy before it takes over completely. While she is gently encouraging her teenage boys that studying is more profitable than having a great social life! Jane’s delighted that QPR have got through to the play offs and a trip to Wembley Stadium looks possible at last. She’s also watching her daughter play every sport under the sun and enjoying the delights of the ‘parent-taxi’ that many of us know so well! The magazine’s packed with so much to do this month that you’ll need to have a good look through to make sure you don't miss out. Thanks to ‘Butterfly World’ for our fantastic cover picture this month. And of course don’t forget if you need a local business pick up ‘st albans NOW’ or just read it every month online. jane & wendy

Five Miles to Fabulous....
Second Battle of St Albans Bernards Heath, St Albans 17th & 18th May 10 - 5pm As part of Sandridge900+ the Medieval Siege Society will be re-enacting this historical event. A weekend of excitement as the White Rose of York challenges the Red of Lancaster on Bernards Heath, the site of the original battle in 1461 when the Lancastrians, led by Queen Margaret, routed the Yorkist army led by the Earl of Warwick. Will the same happen again? As well as Archery competitions, Living History displays, Pyrotechnics and a working Trebuchet there will be a Field Market, Hog Roast and a procession into town on Sunday morning for the blessing of the combatants. Something for all the family to enjoy!
will be out on Saturday 17th May, leaving from Morrisons, Hatfield Road, meet by the cycle racks at 9.30am. Destination will be decided on the day, taking into account weather and capabilities of the riders, but we might head west for this one, having been north and south so far already this year. We are also looking ahead to Bike Week, which runs from 14th - 22nd June, when we meet up on Saturday 14th June, leaving from Morrisons at 9.30am. Eastwards I expect! These rides are women-only, gentle pace, with a coffee stop. We use traffic-free routes and quieter lanes. More details on the South Herts CTC website www.southhertsctc.org.uk

For over 1700 years, people have journeyed to this place to remember Alban, to pray for peace and healing, and to seek God. This special day begins with a procession through the city centre, where giant puppets will retell the story of Alban’s martyrdom. Not only a stunning spectacle but a profoundly moving experience. Garden Design Techniques
Small Gardens With space at a premium, many of us have gardens that are much smaller than we would like. However, it is still possible to create a beautiful and functional space. A few techniques are detailed below: Shape The longer it takes the eye to traverse the length of the garden the larger it will appear. Flowing curves are perfect in this regard, drawing
the eye around in a pleasing manner. For a more formal style, diagonals can be used to great effect, adding more interest to a garden while retaining clean, crisp lines. Mystery Obscuring aspects of the garden so that they aren’t immediately visible, allows the garden to unfold gradually for the viewer as they walk through it. Even in a small garden this technique can have a huge impact through the careful placement of structures and planting. When done well, as in many Japanese gardens, the garden appears not only larger but more appealing, imbued with mystery. Special Features When the viewer is being drawn around the garden, allow them to discover special features to delight the senses, for example a small water feature, specimen plant or work of art. Any element that adds beauty, effectively expands and prolongs our experience, making the space seem more expansive and beguiling. Materials Small gardens can get away with smaller sizes of paving materials, adding a level of detail that would appear fussy in larger gardens. The direction of the paving or decking is also important; horizontal lines will make the garden appear wider, while vertical lines will make the garden appear longer. Although with vertical lines take care to add some mystery or the viewer will be drawn straight to the end of the garden, entirely defeating the purpose.

‘Hearing Dogs for Deaf People’ is a charity that trains dogs to assist people with hearing impairment, by alerting them to everyday sounds at home, such as the telephone, doorbell and, most importantly the smoke alarm. Puppies start their training at about 8 weeks old. They live in the home of a volunteer socialiser for 9 months, before moving to specialist Training Centres, to learn about the soundwork and eventual placement with a deaf person. The socialiser’s role is twofold. Firstly to train them in obedience and good behaviour, they will attend local fortnightly training sessions, and learn to walk to heel, sit, stay, come when called, as well as stamping out bad habits such as jumping up and excessive barking. The puppies will work for their Kennel Club Obedience awards - most of them reach the top 3 star level. The other role prepares them for their life as a Hearing Dog, by exposing them to as many everyday experiences as possible and to help them cope. Hearing Dogs, like all Assistance Dogs are allowed to go everywhere with their owners: supermarkets, restaurants, public transport, even hospitals and doctors’ surgeries, but the distractions are many and it’s important that the dogs can cope without becoming stressed or over excited. The Charity breeds its own puppies (in the hands of volunteers) and uses mainly Labradors and Labrador Retrievers, Spaniels and Poodles plus crossbreeds such as Cockerpoos and Springadors. At the end of the socialisation period, the puppy is returned to the Training Centre for advanced training, a wrench for the puppy to go, but there’s always another one ready and waiting for its first step on the journey to becoming a fully qualified Hearing Dog. Sun 18th May 12.30pm Come and meet Hearing Dogs with their owners and see puppies in training with their socialisers at the St Stephens Parish Festival, Greenwood Park, Tippendell Lane, St Albans Tues 20th May 7.45pm Meet Hearing Dog Puppies and listen to Puppy Socialising Trainer, Tom Bysouth who will be talking about his role. Following a short AGM, all welcome. St Stephen Parish Centre, Bricket Wood, AL2 3PJ

The Spy Who Got Away It began in 1894 when a French agent working as a cleaner at the German embassy in Paris found an incriminating document in a wastepaper basket, which suggested there was a spy in the French army. Suspicion soon fell on Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish officer in the French army. Dreyfus was found guilty of treason at a secret court martial and publicly stripped of his military rank. He was sentenced to life on Devil’s Island. But not everyone was convinced of his guilt. His family demanded to see the evidence against him as none had been produced at the trial. But the authorities refused, claiming the evidence was secret. An army officer, Colonel Picquart noticed that the incriminating document was not in Dreyfus’ handwriting but that of Esterhazy (pictured). When he attempted to raise this he was sent abroad. However, he sent his evidence to Dreyfus’ lawyers who campaigned for Esterhazy to be brought to trial. In 1898 Esterhazy was tried, but at his request the trial was held in secret. He was cleared and fled to England. This prompted writer, Emile Zola to send an open letter to the President of the Republic, which began “J’accuse” accusing the government of anti-semitism, the unlawful imprisonment of Dreyfus and a cover up. Zola was prosecuted for libel and fled to England to avoid jail.
32
Under pressure the government now produced some of the ‘secret’ evidence. But this was exposed as a forgery and the officer responsible committed suicide. By now the rest of the world was convinced of Dreyfus’ innocence, but still the
French authorities insisted he was guilty. Eventually in 1899 Dreyfus was tried a second time and found guilty, but pardoned. As Dreyfus himself commented they had given him his freedom, but not his honour. It was not until 1906 that he was finally declared innocent and allowed to rejoin the army. But what of the real spy and why did he do it? Charles Esterhazy was of Hungarian descent and an army officer. He was a gambler, and in debt. And according to one ex -lover, he hated France and was contemptuous of the French army. As for Dreyfus his only crime was to be Jewish at a time of strong anti -semitism in France. For the French government to have admitted they had made a mistake would have put the army in the dock and perhaps have risked a military coup. So they protected the very man who had spied on them. However, there are those who think Esterhazy was a double agent, which might also explain why the authorities protected him. When Esterhazy arrived in England he first lived in London, and moved to Harpenden in 1909 where he lived at various addresses under a variety of aliases. His final home was in Milton Road, where he used the name Count De Voilemont. He died in May 1923, his funeral service was held at Our Lady of Lourdes and he was buried in the churchyard of St Nicholas. His real identity was only revealed in August 1923 by ‘The Spectator’. It informed its readers that a certain Count De Voilemont who had died in Harpenden a few months earlier had been revealed as Esterhazy a key player in the Dreyfus Affair, while the ‘Herts Advertiser’ spoke of “A Double Life”. A Summery Spring Starter May is upon us and there's so many things now in season, spring green cabbage and cauliflower and fantastic British Asparagus; so make sure you stock up. Adam the new manager of the Abbot’s Kitchen cafe, shares with us one of the seasonal dishes currently on their menu.
Childwickbury Goats Cheese served with Marinated Dates and Red Onion Marmalade 1 Round of Childwickbury Goats Cheese (from St Albans Market or Wodehill Farm, Beds) 2 Red Onions 2 x 250ml Glasses of Red Wine (+1 for the cook!) 6 tbsp Dark Brown Sugar 1 Pack of Dates, pitted 1 Lemon 1 Lime 1 Bag of Panko Bread Crumbs 6 Eggs Rapeseed Oil
Carefully place each portion of cheese into your egg whites being sure to cover all the surface area. Once this is done put the portions into the bowl of breadcrumbs until they are completely covered. After you’ve finished leave in the fridge to set.
Onion Marmalade 1 Slice the onions into strips or rings (never diced!) how you cut them depends on how chunky you want your marmalade. 2 Throw the onions into a pan on medium heat, along with the wine and sugar. Let simmer until you have a nice sweet gooey marmalade (this usually takes about an hour) once made put it in the fridge to cool. Dates 1 Grab your two citrus fruits and zest and juice them. 2 Put in the pitted dates and leave to soak.. Cooking Right this is the easy and the most fun part. Put a frying pan on the heat up to full. Add about 2 mugs of rapeseed oil (not olive oil as it has a low smoking temperature, rapeseed has a very high smoking point), wait until hot, then gently place the goats cheese into the oil and turn over when one side is golden brown. Serve while hot with your onion marmalade and marinated dates and remember, it tastes best all mixed together!!
This is my summery spring starter. Goats Cheese I hope you enjoy! 1 Out of one round you should get least get by Adam Msetfi four portions. Grab a small cake cutter and start cutting out circles. With the off cuts Abbots Kitchen St Albans Cathedral mould them into similar shapes. Sumpter Yard, St Albans 2 Separate the eggs and whisk the whites only. www.abbotskitchen.org 3 Pour your Panko breadcrumbs into a bowl. Mon - Sat 10am - 4.30pm Sun 1pm - 4.30pm
