Beating the Bounds 10th May 2pm Kingsbury Watermill The traditional ceremony of Beating the Bounds dates back to medieval times and involves members of the community walking the 3 mile boundary of St Albans. During the ceremony, people will be invited to beat the ‘bounds’ with willow wands at four locations while the Mayor's Chaplain says a short prayer. The procession, led by the Mayor will follow the medieval boundary of the town as defined in 1327. The procession takes around 2½ hours. The four locations are: The Pudding Stone, Kingsbury Mill Boundary mark by the ‘Jolly Sailor’ pub Keyfield Car Park, Old London Road River Ver, the bridge next to ‘Ye Olde Fighting Cocks’ pub, Verulamium Park This ceremony is thought to have started in the mid 13th century when the Tonman ditch was used to help define the boundary. In 1327 following a riot by the townspeople against the authority of the Abbot, twenty-four burgesses walked around the town to confirm a clear boundary. This became known as the Beating the Bounds ceremony, which today is held to celebrate the medieval townspeople who fought to establish their rights as citizens of St Albans. Why not go along and join in.

VE Day 70th Anniversary On 8th May 1945, Britain erupted into joyful, euphoric celebration. The eagerly awaited news had finally arrived, war was over and Germany had surrendered. After 5 years, 8 months and 4 days of fighting, victory in Europe was declared. The price of freedom had been high and many challenges lay ahead. It would be 3 more months before the fighting ended in the Far East, when Japan surrendered. But for one glorious day and night, a generation rejoiced. Streets packed with people were decked out in red, white and blue. Bonfires blazed, fireworks banged and music blared. There were crowds everywhere all singing, dancing and cheering. To remember this historic event, over the weekend of 8th -10th May, the Royal British Legion will join the nation in marking the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day. There will be a series of national commemorative events in London that weekend, with community events and celebrations being organised across the country. Vice Admiral Peter Wilkinson CB CVO, National President of The Royal British Legion said: "The commemoration of this conflict, still in living memory, gives us the opportunity to salute the Second World War generation. We hope that all communities will use the VE Day 70 commemorations to thank them and celebrate the role they played in our nation's history." www.gov.uk/veday70 www.britishlegion.org.uk www.veday.org.uk

Duxford Air Show 23rd & 24th May Come and enjoy this show paying tribute to the people who endured the Second World War. The flying display will show how the Second World War was won in the air. Accompanied by music, speeches, veterans’ memories, flying aircraft showing Britain preparing for war, the vital victory in the Battle of Britain, the bombing campaign, flying with the armies and navies, and why Victory in Europe didn’t end the Second World War. In a poignant spectacle commemorating the 70th anniversary of VE Day and its own 70th anniversary, B-17 Flying Fortress Sally B will lead a VE Day anniversary salute, accompanied by a Dakota, Catalina, P-51 Mustangs, Corsair, Wildcat, Warhawk and Curtiss P-40C. Immerse yourself in a 1940s street party atmosphere complete with bunting and picnic benches. Sing along to wartime music and songs performed on Duxfords Second World War stage. Living history groups give a glimpse into life on the Home Front, including wartime weddings, the Home Guard, the Womens’ Auxiliary Air Force and the United State Army Air Forces. Experience the era when 'Beauty was Duty' with1940s hair and make-up demonstrations. All flying is subject to weather and serviceability. IWM Duxford will be open from 8am - 6pm. The flying display will start at 2pm and finish at approximately 5.30pm, giving time in the morning to explore the museum, and it’s other activities or treat yourself to a pleasure flight. Ring bells, pull levers and work the signals!

100 years of the WI Why not visit St Albans South Signal Box at the City Station. There are many artefacts to see, and a signalling demonstration shows how the signalman worked. Everyone, young and old, has the opportunity to ring bells, pull levers and work the signals. Entry is free, but donations towards its upkeep and further development are welcome! You can park in the Station Car Park by Platform 4, or on Ridgmont Road. Unfortunately, there is no wheel chair access to the first floor Operating Deck. It will be open from 2pm - 5pm on the second and fourth Sunday each month from May - October. History When the Midland Mainline was first built, it ended at Hitchin and trains carried on into London via the Great Northern Railway into Kings Cross. Our line was built and paid for by Midland businessmen who wanted to ship coal and then beer into London. Later this was added to with milk and vegetables, and then people! In 1868 the Midland Mainline was completed between Bedford and St Pancras, passing St Albans on the way. The present signal box was opened in June 1892, and closed in December 1979. Although Grade II listed, it was left derelict and nearly falling-down, until a group was formed to restore it in 2002. After delays arranging a lease with Network Rail and obtaining planning permission, the Box was restored from 2007 and first opened to the public in April, 2009. Since then there have been over 13,000 visitors. The Box won the St Albans Civic Society’s Award in 2008, and the National Railway Heritage Signalling Award in 2010, and is ranked fifth in the list of St Albans attractions. At first Network Rail wanted the Signal Box moved away, but eventually relented and it is now the largest preserved Midland Signal Box in the UK, still in its original position. The Women’s Institute was formed in 1915, to revitalise rural communities and encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War. Since then their aims have broadened and the WI is now the largest voluntary womens’ organisation in the UK. They have campaigned for many causes over the years and made a real difference in so many ways. The SOS for Honey Bees campaign for research into honey bee health was passed in 2009 as the outlook for bees remained bleak, and so the National Pollinator Strategy was launched in November 2014. In the early 1990s the NFWI joined with CAFOD, Christian Aid, Oxfam, Traidcraft and the World Development Movement to become a founding member of the Fairtrade Foundation. In 1986 the NFWI was one of the first organisations to talk about AIDS to educate the public and get people talking about the issue. In 1975 the WI started informing members about the importance of breast examination and lobbying the government to set up screening clinics. Members were among the first to debate the dangers of smoking when the WI passed a resolution to ban smoking in public places in 1964. In 1954 the Keep Britain Tidy group was formed and was influential in transforming litter policy following the 1958 Litter Act. The WI passed a resolution calling for 'equal pay for equal work' in 1943 They campaigned throughout the 1930s and 1940s to increase the number of women police, First campaigned on jury service in 1921, urging the government to open up jury service to all.

The play is set in a grubby Valencia hotel in 1955, where two of the greatest film directors of modern times, Leni Riefenstahl and Orson Welles, come together to make a low budget documentary for the BBC. Welles has been rejected by Hollywood, and Riefenstahl has been persecuted since the War because of her association with Hitler and the Nazi party. Both are virtually penniless and face an uncertain future. With the help of BBC producer Carruthers, they try to come to terms with what will face them in an uncertain future. Maltings Arts Theatre Playhouse Creatures by April de Angelis 7th - 10th May 8pm £10 / £7.50 A glimpse into the lives of the first actresses to appear on the English stage. It’s 1669, and after 17 years of Puritan suppression under Cromwell, Charles II brings his glittering court from France and reopens the theatres, insisting that the female roles are to be played by women. Like page three girls they strut their stuff but are employable only while their looks last. Markyate Plant Sale

Luton Hoo The five-acre, octagonal Luton Hoo Walled Garden was designed by Lancelot “Capability” Brown for John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute in 1763. Successive owners adapted the garden to match the changing fashions. Heated glasshouses were built by the Leigh family in the 19th century for the production of fruit and flowers, a few of which still survive today. The largest surviving glasshouse, built for Sir Julius and Lady Wernher c1911, is evidence of the extravagance of the Edwardian period. The garden fell into decline in the1980s but is now being restored, largely by an enthusiastic team of volunteers. The Walled Garden is open Wednesdays from 6th May - 30th September, 11am - 3pm. £5 per person. Free tours at 11.30am, 12.30pm and 2pm. Refreshments, fruit, vegetables and honey are available to buy. www.lutonhooestate.co.uk/walled-garden

NOW in the Garden Sowing and planting Now that the weather has warmed up, summer bedding plants can be planted in tubs and perennials such as Cannas and Dahlias can be planted straight into the ground. Winter bedding plants and biennial spring bedding plants can also be sown anytime from now until July. Pruning There is plenty of pruning to be done this month. To make way for summer plants, deadhead Tulips and Daffodils and remove spring bedding plants from beds and containers. As frost is unlikely in May, it should now be safe to prune tender shrubs and herbaceous perennials such as Penstemon and Fuschia. Spring flowering shrubs such as Choisya ternata can be pruned after flowering. Evergreen hedges and shrubs such as Viburnum tinus can also be pruned this month. Pay particular attention to cutting out any frost damage.

32

General maintenance To encourage strong growth next year, apply a fertiliser to spring bulbs once they have flowered. Allow the foliage of Daffodils and other spring-flowering bulbs to die down naturally as the leaves are essential in producing food for healthy bulbs next year. In addition, add liquid feed to container plants on a monthly basis or more frequently. To ensure a good display and prevent drooping, add supports for herbaceous plants before they become too tall, or produce heavy blooms. In order to prevent weeds from seeding and spreading continue to hoe borders and beds. Lawns To encourage lush growth, this month apply a high nitrogen summer lawn fertiliser. There is still time in early May to sow a new lawn or seed dead patches, for the best result; cultivate, level and gently firm the ground beforehand. If your lawn isn't edged, make a 7.5cm gutter around the lawn edge using a half moon iron. This will make moving easier and stop grass growing into your borders. Happy gardening! Not Just Lip Service Do you find it difficult sometimes to follow conversation when you’re in a group?

had hearing loss for a very long time, nearly always have developed the skill naturally.

Perhaps you have noticed when dining with friends in a noisy restaurant that it is difficult to hear even though you wear hearing technology?

As part of our commitment to provide our patients with access to additional opportunities to socialise with like-minded individuals, the Hearing Healthcare Practice are delighted to announce that we have teamed up with Molly Berry a lip reading tutor who also wears a cochlear implant to launch a brand new Lip-Reading class here at the Hearing Healthcare Practice.

Lip reading can help you to make the most of your hearing. Having a hearing loss can make speech sound quieter, distorted or both! Learning to Lip-Read is a skill which in conjunction with your hearing technology will help improve how much you understand when people speak to you. Many people leave developing the skill of lip reading too late and think of it as a last resort. It is far from that – lip reading is an essential skill for everyone no matter the degree of hearing loss. With a few key lip reading skills, situations that previously have been challenging become far less stressful and allow you to participate more fully. Lip reading is seeing the sound of speech – it is not like reading a book – you do not see every word. In fact, only about 30% of words have some sort of shape on the lips. It is not just about reading lips, it is about appreciating the context of a conversation and reading body language and then putting all three elements together to form the full picture. It is quite an art. People that have

34

As well as improving your Lip-Reading skills, you will learn about useful communication methods, local support services and the latest developments in listening technology. Our Lip-Reading Classes are designed to be relaxed and fun and you’ll also gain support from people who share similar experiences. Learning to Lip-Read takes time, patience and understanding, but the rewards are immense, and while you learn you are improving your confidence, lessening your feelings of isolation, and strengthening your communication ability. The 10 week Introductory Course takes place on Tuesday evenings throughout May and June from 6.30 - 8.30pm and costs just £75 for 10 sessions. Numbers are limited, so if you’re interested in attending the course please call us to book your place on; 01582 767218 or call in and see us at the practice.

St Albans Steam and Country Show 30th & 31st May 10am Come and enjoy a great day's entertainment with demonstrations showing a working sawbench, threshing machine, stone crusher and other machinery from days gone by. These steaming monsters provide both entertainment and education for adults and children alike, away from the high-tec world we now live in. Many of the older generation will remember steam rollers at work, when before the last world war steam wagons regularly pounded through St Albans carrying long distance loads. Steam threshing was carried out at local farms and steam tractors carried stone, farm produce and even house contents within the area. Some of these machines are now 100 years old, but have been rebuilt many times and will last forever! Oaklands College Hatfield Road, St Albans AL4 0JA www.hertssteam.org
