NOW in the Garden Garden Tips for May • Prune evergreen shrubs and hedging. Use secateurs where possible on large leaved plants such as Laurel, as using hedge trimmers can leave unsightly and unhealthy gashes. • Cut back and divide spring flowering perennials that have finished flowering, such as Pulmonaria. Remove old leaves and replant overgrown clumps. • Continue to stake and tie in emerging tall climbers and perennials as plants such as Delphiniums begin growth in earnest. • Plant out annuals sown under cover earlier in the year once all risk of frost has passed. Cosmos bipinnatus is worth considering as it has lovely airy foliage, and if regularly deadheaded will produce large daisy like flowers from June - November. • Keep weeding borders, carefully removing the roots of perennials and using a hoe to remove annual weed seedlings. Weed free borders enable air to circulate around plants, improving general health and reducing pests and diseases. • Start to mow the lawn regularly, and finish sowing any new areas of lawn early in May before it becomes too warm. Star Plant for May : Allium hollandicum These purple globes made up of tiny star shaped flowers look lovely mixed with perennial planting in the border. Plant bulbs in October. Requires full sun. Benington Lordship It’s a great time to visit these beautiful gardens, as the herbaceous borders are starting to fill out with new growth, colour is provided by bulbs and biennials that are allowed to seed freely. Where bulbs have flowered in the spring the grass is left to grow tall creating a contrast between formal and wild areas throughout the garden. This is also a busy time in the kitchen garden with lots of vegetables to sow and plant as the soil starts to warm up. At the end of May the borders look at their best with fresh new growth and masses of colour. £5, child £2, under 12's free Stevenage SG2 7BS www.beningtonlordship.co.uk

Deliciousandreal Cheesy Meatballs A few people have asked me for this recipe; but I just want to clarify that it was from a blog called ‘The Londoner’, but I’ve adapted it and made it my own… Sauce: Meatballs: 1 large clove of garlic, crushed 400g minced beef 1 tsp dried chillies ½ tsp salt 400g tinned tomatoes Good grinding of 100ml water black pepper 1 tsp dried oregano 1 tsp honey Plain flour (for dusting)1 tsp dried oregano 1 ball of mozzarella Oil 40g grated parmesan Meatballs: Put the ingredients (apart from the flour) into a large bowl and using your hands combine them. Divide the mixture into 12 balls, roll them in flour and fry in hot oil until brown. Place in an ovenproof dish. Sauce: Heat a little oil in the pan, add the garlic and chilli flakes, cook gently (don’t burn the garlic). Add the tomatoes, water and honey; simmer for a minute or two, stiring well. Add salt and pepper. Pour the sauce over the meatballs, tear the mozzarella over the top and sprinkle with parmesan and oregano. Bake at 180°C for about 10 minutes.

Mindful Walks for Mental Health Mates My name is Kirsty. In my life, I’ve suffered from mental health problems, depression and a severe anxiety disorder. I have discovered that walking and talking therapy, can significantly improve mental well -being, diminishing negative thought patterns, and contributing to a stress free state of mind. So I am pleased to offer local monthly mindfulness walks for mentalhealthmates.co.uk The aim is to gather kindred people together, to support one another, and break the stigma wrongly associated with mental health. The emphasis is on having a nice time, making new friends and in turn, helping one another. Being outside allows you to feel part of something positive. We walk and talk without judgement or agenda, and discuss life’s challenges and share our thoughts. You don’t have to share your story; you can just 'be', and simply walk with us. The evidence that supports walking ‘outside’, and its positive impact is endless. Feel good serotonin levels are raised, and we benefit from sunlight, the best source of the happy hormone (vitamin D). Being at one with nature is linked to increased activity in the part of the brain responsible for empathy, emotional stability, happiness and love (urban environments do the same for fear and anxiety). Please email me if you, or anyone you know, would like to join one of these monthly walks. I’m also available for one-to-one walks if you’re not able to make the planned sessions. NOW for a Good Read This month’s books are all about relationships, from first loves and families to fleeting friendships.

Lucky Boy by Shanthi Sekaran

Mexican Solimar risks everything to start a new life in America, but as an illegal immigrant she has few rights. When she’s thrown into a detention centre, her son is placed in foster care. Kavya is an AmericanIndian chef desperate for a child. When she’s given Solimar’s toddler to care for it seems like a dream come true. One boy – two mothers, both of whom will do everything in their power in order to keep him. An emotional rollercoaster of a read, this looks set to become one of this year’s bestsellers.

The Lonely Hearts Hotel by Heather O’Neill

Pierrot and Rose grow up together in a Montreal orphanage. They bond over a shared love of entertaining people, but go their separate ways as teenagers. Reunited years later, they set out to realise their childhood dream of running their own stage show. Their path isn’t an easy one, however. They both have demons to face, and Rose’s wants her dead. A highly entertaining read, with beautiful, lyrical prose and characters you’ll be rooting for from the beginning.

A Big Dose of Lucky (Secrets) by Marthe Jocelyn

When the Canadian orphanage they live in burns down in 1964, seven teenage girls set out to discover the secrets of their pasts. Seven authors have each chosen one girl’s story to write. The result is the Secrets series. In A Big Dose of Lucky, Malou heads to a small town in Ontario, hoping to find her birth parents. Malou is mixed race, shy and desperate to fit in. A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles

The gentleman of the title is Count Alexander Rostov. Following the Russian Revolution, the Count is sentenced to house (or in this case, hotel) arrest, indefinitely. Given work as a waiter in the hotel restaurant, he forges close friendships with some of the other inhabitants. While his view is mainly confined to what he can see out of his tiny window, Rostov is able to observe and ruminate on a tumultuous Russia over the course of four decades. You’ll savour every word.

My Sweet Revenge by Jane Fallon

When Paula finds out her husband is having an affair, she decides to win him back – so that she can be the one who breaks the marriage up. She befriends his mistress, Saskia, and sets out on a mission to lose weight, get fit and become the woman he wants. Paula recruits Saskia’s husband, Josh, to help and together they set out to make the cheaters’ lives a misery. An easy read that’s perfect for lazy sunny afternoons.

See You in the Cosmos by Jack Cheng

11 year old Alex loves everything to do with space. So he builds a rocket and sets off for a rocket festival in Mexico. His plan is to launch his rocket into space, attached to an iPod on which Alex is recording his thoughts and feelings about his family and the people he meets on his journey. While it’s been catalogued as a children’s book, See You in the Cosmos definitely has crossover appeal. Fresh, imaginative and full of energy, this is perfect for fans of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.
